Iron Man 3 to Revert to Original Themes

$

Robert Downey Jr. doesn't want to place any extra pressure on Iron Man 3, but, well...

It might be the greatest superhero movie of all-time.

Robert Downey is Iron Man

"I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that's ever been made," the actor said in a recent interview.

Implying that the sequel had a few problems, the star elaborated on what it would take to pull off such a feat, referencing the original blockbuster:

"We have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart."

Iron Man 3 will hit theaters on May 3, 2013.

The Divide Movie Review: Divided We Fall

$
0
0

The Divide begins with a sensational shot. Nuclear bombs are falling on New York City, but we see them in the reflection of an eye captured with an extreme close-up. Then, it kicks into gear as the individual who is gazing at the horror joins an army of apartment residents in an effort to get out of the building.

The Cast of The Divide
As panic permeates, we follow a small group of residents as they try to exit, only to hit a roadblock that is a sea of people. Turning, they see a door to the basement closing and manage to get inside before it is slammed shut. The power goes in and out. Horrible sounds come from above and then there’s the unmistakable noise of the building collapsing. What to do now?

The crux of The Divide is how this small band of survivors will get by while either waiting for help or the months it will take to have the air clear outside. Just when the audience believes it knows what the film is about, soldiers bust in, guns blazing. The terror of the nuclear attack is then topped by a scamper for survival. The eerily dressed men retreat and weld the door shut.

Survivors include Michael Biehn (visit our exclusive video interview), Milo Ventimiglia, Lauren German, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance and Michael Eklund. Biehn establishes himself as the leader as he is the super of the building and has supplies at the ready to aid in survival.

But The Divide is not a film about the apocalypse and its aftermath. The film is truly a study in human behavior as seen when we as a species are confronted by the worst possible situations. After witnessing the film, one could easily get into a discussion as to how we would react. That is the biggest plus to the movie. It does make you think. The Divide is also incredibly ugly. Perhaps I’m an optimist, but to think that we as humans would land at our lowest common denominator after a few weeks of desperate desolation is hard to stomach. In fact, it may be all too real and that is why it so disturbs. In The Divide, that is the premise and to watch these characters slowly turn on one another is compelling, albeit appalling -- and we mean that in a good way cinematically.

There are issues with The Divide, not the least of which is it goes on for too long. Once the ending appears in sight, you may also question the bit of information that leads one of our survivors to make a move that could have been executed much earlier in the film. Then again, we wouldn’t have a film.

Director Xavier Gens (Hitman) has crafted a dark and methodical race-against-time film. For those who can appreciate this sort of dreary, animalistic portrayal of the human condition, it is solid. But for audiences that don’t want trouble sleeping for days on end after witnessing The Divide, this might not be the film for you.

The photos are continuing to roll out of Entertainment Weekly’s 2012 preview. Magic Mike, based on the true story of Channing Tatum’s stripper past, is up next. The two stills feature Tatum and co-star Alex Pettyfer in their “Chippendales” bow ties.

Alex Pettyfer and Channing Tatum in Magic Mike
Magic Mike is from helmer Steven Soderbergh who is directing out of the box of late. Arriving January 20 is his first action film Haywire (check out Haywire's first five minutes). After that film -- that also stars Tatum -- he has the stripper comedy that also stars Matthew McConaughey and Matt Bomer.

One last pic for you, this one is of the man who inspired the entire Magic Mike story, Mr. Tatum himself.

Star Wars fans, brace yourself… five new posters from the upcoming 3D re-release of Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace have arrived courtesy of Lucasfilm. On February 10, George Lucas gives us the first of his prequels, with Jar Jar Binks in three dimensions! What is noticeable from the posters below, in fact, is the serious absence of Jar Jar and the pumped up presence of Darth Maul. Rightfully so, honestly, as the Jar Jar character still drives Star Wars purists crazy and Maul was one of the brightest spots from The Phantom Menace.

Woman in Black: Clip Shows Daniel Radcliffe's Horror

Daniel Radcliffe has said of The Woman in Black that if he wasn’t starring in it, it would be too scary for him to see. Evidence of its scary quotient is seen in the new clip released by CBS films.

It shows Daniel Radcliffe’s Arthur Kipps, working away at his recently deceased client’s house. He gets a little heavy-eyed and begins to take a nap. Whatever is haunting this house decides to pay him a visit. Watch with warning… it is spooky!

The Woman in Black concerns Kipps as he sorts out his client’s affairs after her death. Soon after arriving, he discovers some serious disturbances in the aura of the home. When he sees the titular woman, things really get scary.

Contraband Movie Review: Mark Wahlberg Swings Into Action

$

0

In Contraband, Mark Wahlberg carries the nickname Houdini. In what could have been a standard “one last job” action movie, Wahlberg’s latest moves like a speedboat and carries twists and turns that tribute the Icelandic film that it is based, Reykjavik-Rotterdam. Contraband is directed by Baltasar Kormakur, the man who starred in the original. As such, he inherently knows what buttons to push for the audience to send us into a thrilling frenzy.

Contraband Star Mark Wahlberg
Wahlberg is Chris Farraday, no relation to Lost’s Daniel with a slightly different last name spelling. But what the characters share is blindingly upfront. Each possesses the ability to look at a landscape and efficiently reach a conclusion that is the path that must be followed. Contraband's Farraday’s happily married with two boys, retired from a life as one of the world’s best smugglers. When his wife’s (Kate Beckinsale) brother is essentially held under ransom, Wahlberg must cut to the chase and amass the massive amount of money needed to free family, and that is through moving Contraband.

The “one last job” method of storytelling has been utilized hundreds, if not thousands of times throughout movie history. How Kormakur manages to avoid stereotypes and bring surprises at every turn is twofold: His cast delivers in their roles and the film’s twists arrive covertly… much like Wahlberg, who disappears into his character.

Some may recall The Italian Job from Wahlberg’s performance. I can see it, but where Wahlberg sets his performance in Contraband apart is a fierceness coupled with command of character that has been building for two decades from the actor (check out our Top 10 Mark Wahlberg movies). He manages to show layers to his Chris Farraday that is equally family man worried about his kin’s safety, world class smuggler moving in a world he rules and cunning adversary to anyone who crosses his path.

Beckinsale, soon to be seen in Underworld Awakening, plays the concerned wife thrown into chaos by extenuating circumstances well. We wish there was more to her screen time. But this movie is not about Kate Farraday. She is merely a spoke in the wheel of suspense that in Contraband is cruising at top speed.

What else amazes is the use of New Orleans as a character. Katrina is never spoken of or shown in any way, yet filmmakers have captured a city that has been knocked down and is still fighting its way back. Much as Chris Farraday wants to continue his legit existence, when a tidal wave in the form of Giovanni Ribisi’s baddie Tim Briggs hits his family hard on a multitude of levels, his fight is our fight. And in the hands of Wahlberg, we are down for the battle.

The actual star of Contraband is Ben Foster. His Sebastian Abney is a complex fellow. Foster peels off the onion layers of his character’s existence in such a manner that there is no way to predict which side of the coin he will land on by film’s end. He steals every scene he’s in, whether opposite Wahlberg, Beckinsale or Ribisi -- all capable of acting fireworks -- and serves as the icing on the cake that is Contraband.

Beetlejuice Sequel Gains Momentum, Tim Burton Attached

Back in November, Movie Fanatic confirmed that Warner Bros. was securing Michael Keaton’s participation to reprise his role in the sequel to Beetlejuice. Now, the director of that film, Tim Burton, has admitted that he will go forward with the project as well.

Beetlejuice on a grave
"Yes,” Burton told MTV when asked about the possibility of helming Beetlejuice 2. “I love that character and Michael is so great in it. I always think about how great and fun that character was, so I just said to Seth [Grahame-Smith], 'If you have some idea about it, go for it, and then I'll look at it freshly... In the past, I tried some things, but that was way back when. He seemed really excited about it."

We will keep you posted on this as we cannot think of another movie as worthy for a sequel.

Joyful Noise Movie Review: Saved by Song

$
0
0

Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton play dueling divas in Joyful Noise. When it comes to their singing and the music message of the film, it soars. How could it not with its premise of a Georgia church choir on their mission to win a national championship.

Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise
Parton plays a woman of privilege who is, it seems, funding her local church single handedly. Her husband (Kris Kristofferson) is the choir leader as the film begins with a rousing number of Not Enough (Love in the World) in the Joyful Noise church choir competition.

Things rapidly change. The establishment’s pastor (Courtney B. Vance) decides to hand over the choir’s reins to Latifah’s Vi. Parton’s G.G. goes along, but with a raised eyebrow. At around the same time, Parton’s long lost grandson Randy (Jeremy Jordan) arrives -- kicked out from his mother’s home in New York City. Who should catch his eye? It’s Vi’s daughter Olivia (Keke Palmer).

Joyful Noise feels a bit like Glee with its characters breaking into song on occasion. Mostly, it works. One particular sequence with Parton, unfortunately, it does not. But the star of this film is its music. It is about as toe-tapping as movie music can get and uplifting to say the least. The gospel renditions of some popular songs including Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror and a mash-up of Sly and the Family Stone, Usher and Stevie Wonder brought several people in my screening to their feet.

The interpersonal stories in Joyful Noise are what fall slightly flat. Parton’s character isn’t fully flushed out. There is a sub plot involving Latifah and her husband that is muddled, yet the love story between the teenagers is quite compelling.

Joyful Noise knows its audience. Those wishing to witness an inspirational tale about overcoming the obstacles while keeping ones faith in God firmly in place, this is your film. People who appreciate a musical movie whose soundtrack pulsates with powerful singing and songs will also not be disappointed.

But the film is a bit like Glee in other ways as well. Of late, Glee has gone down like cotton candy, delicious at first and easily forgettable later. Joyful Noise is tastier than Glee, but its story is as likely to fade quickly. Yet, we have to be honest; this writer ran out after the screening and bought the soundtrack. Hearing the soaring voices of Joyful Noise is alone worth the price of admission.

New Dark Shadows Pic: Depp & Pfeiffer Stare

Thus far, any photos we’ve seen from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows has featured Johnny Depp in the background. A new still from the film has arrived and it has Depp and Michelle Pfeifer front and center, and the Pirates of the Caribbean star no longer seems to be channeling Michael Jackson!

Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in Dark Shadows
Dark Shadows follows Depp’s Barnabas Collins and his family of vampires as they live in a world that doesn’t seem quite a solid fit for them.

The film arrives May 11 and is based on the wildly popular TV series of the same name. It features a stellar cast that also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Christopher Lee, Jonny Lee Miller and Chloe Moretz.

Two more The Dark Knight Rises photos have arrived from its spotlight preview in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. We particularly enjoy the first photo of Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne with his iconic Batsuit waiting behind him.

News has also come out of The Dark Knight Rises camp as we now know when a new trailer will debut. According to sources inside Warner Bros., we can look for the next trailer from Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie in May. There was some talk that it might appear with Wrath of the Titans when it bows March 30, but don't believe the hype. Count on the film to give us our next video view in May.

Oh yes, now to that last new The Dark Knight Rises photo. It features Bale as Batman looking off to the sky... perhaps at the Bat Signal?

Tangled Ever After Clip: The Pursuit

A new clip for Tangled Ever After has arrived, merely a week after Movie Fanatic premiered the clip The Rings! The Pursuit is the clip’s title and aptly so as it follows two of our favorite Tangled characters chasing after Rapunzel and Flynn’s wedding rings as the ceremony happens inside the church.

Tangled Ever After is playing before the Beauty and the Beast return to screens in 3D, in theaters today. The short brings back the film's original stars Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, and is beyond charming.

It lasts barely 15 minutes, but the new short captures the spirit of the hit film and gives us a taste of what a sequel to Tangled may look like.

Casa de mi Padre Trailer: Will Ferrell Still Funny in Spanish

Will Ferrell is doing his first all Spanish language film and from the looks of the first trailer (below), he is as funny in another language as he is in his native tongue. Casa de mi Padre is the story of Ferrell’s son of a rancher who becomes a vigilante when his father’s farm is threatened.

The above is the first full-length trailer for Ferrell’s latest film after a mini-teaser of Casa de mi Padre premiered previously.

As can be seen in the full-length trailer, the film is off-the-hook silly, and we wouldn’t expect anything less from a solid Ferrell comedy.

The photo below has surfaced in Empire magazine and shows Daniel Craig about to take a dip in a very nice pool. Could it be the first photo from Skyfall? You bet.

Daniel Craig in Skyfall
The still is an interesting choice for a first photo from the 23rd James Bond film. Craig is not in action, in fact he is doing the opposite… completely relaxing. But one thing it clearly does is show that Craig, whom many have called the sexiest James Bond, has still got the hotness factor sky high.

Skyfall is set to be released November 9 and features an Oscar winner for a director (Sam Mendes) and an all-star cast including Judi Dench reprising her role as M, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw.

Beauty and the Beast 3D Movie Review: Worth the Upgrade?

$
0
0

Beauty and the Beast first charmed audiences in 1991 as part of a Disney animation renaissance that began with The Little Mermaid. It became a blockbuster. The film featured songs by the famed musical duo of lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken which became instant classics and won Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Song. Now Beauty and the Beast has gotten a Lion King-type 3D makeover and the question has to be raised: Does it work?

Paige O'Hara and Robby Benson in Beauty and the Beast 3D
The answer is an unequivocal yes. Nobody does the color palette as Disney does and that is never more evident than when a film is seen in 3D. In the 3D re-release, scenes pop with a vibrancy that is still as powerful as when the film debuted over 20 years ago.

Even if one is not a fan of 3D, much less 3D conversions, what is worth every cent is witnessing Beauty and the Beast once again on the big screen.

One of Disney’s most popular films is also one of its most resonant in message as well. Witnessing the majesty of the budding love affair between Belle (Paige O’Hara) and the Beast (Robby Benson) is pure bliss and it contains a priceless message for us all, particularly the youngest members of the audience. The beauty-is-within message comes through in the story from its beginnings.

For those who need a refresher course, the Beast wasn’t always beastly. He was a vain prince who refused to give shelter from, what he perceived to be, a hideous old woman. She then left him with a curse that he would turn into the Beast and stay that way until he found someone who would love him for who he was -- fangs, claws and all. There is also a catch, she left him with a single rose that would slowly fade and eventually die when he turned twenty-one. As the story begins, it is merely weeks until that fateful date with destiny.

Meanwhile, back in a nearby village, Belle is not obsessed with finding a husband, as many of her contemporaries are. She would rather help her inventor father with his work and delve into her latest book. The Beast and Belle are brought together when her father wanders into his castle and is taken prisoner. She offers to take his place and the Beast agrees.

From the opening number of Belle to Be Our Guest, the soundtrack has proven timeless. Witnessing it in restored digital glory anew is astounding. The song Human Again has been dropped from this new version, yet the film doesn’t suffer for it at all. In fact, the film feels tighter in 2012 than it did in 1991… if that’s possible!

Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. It’s easy to see why and that fact is only amplified by the adding of a third dimension. It is not only the colors that pop off the screen, but the landscape of the Beauty and the Beast world comes alive with the added dimension. We should not be surprised, given Disney’s history of magic, but in fact we were blown away and pleasantly so by Beauty and the Beast on the big screen. It is a reminder why Disney animation set the standard for excellence and continues to do so to this day.

Weekend Movie Preview: January 13, 2012

It may be cold outside for much of the country, but things are heating up at the movies. Mark Wahlberg returns to action in Contraband, Disney gives Beauty and the Beast a 3D upgrade, The Divide explores survival after a nuclear attack and Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton find lots of Joyful Noise.

Contraband: Wahlberg is a family man, married to Kate Beckinsale, and he is pulled back into his old gig as a smuggler when his brother-in-law winds up on the bad side of a drug dealer. The film moves at a feverish pace and Wahlberg is terrific. Giovanni Ribisi is the main baddie and delivers in droves. Check out our Contraband review for more details.

The Divide: What happens when a group of survivors hunker down in a Manhattan apartment building basement after nuclear bombs have fallen from the skies is the gist of The Divide. Michael Biehn excels in his role as the building super, but the film doesn’t quite pull all the punches it needs to. Fans of dark movies that explore the human condition will adore the film, as we state in our The Divide review.

Joyful Noise: Parton and Latifah join forces as members of a Georgia church choir that is stacked with talent and on its way to the Joyful Noise choir competition championships… if only they could get along. The music in the film is astounding, but the plot is muddled. As discussed in our Joyful Noise review, the soundtrack is explosive with gospel songs and pop songs done with a gospel arrangement and that's the main reason to check out this film.

Beauty and the Beast 3D: Belle and the Beast are back and in three dimensions. Disney re-releases the classic 1991 animated film in 3D and it is a welcome return. After watching this film for the first time in 20 years, it is easy to see why it was the first animated feature to earn a Best Picture nomination. Be sure to read our Beauty and the Beast 3D review for more on this brilliant film.
