Golden Globe Predictions: The Artist to Win Big

$

0

Ricky Gervais may set off quite a few fireworks as host of the 2012 Golden Globes. But, let’s be real, the true explosions will go on inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 15 when the best in film (and television) are awarded Golden Globe excellence. So… who will win? Movie Fanatic makes our annual predictions that you can use to win that pool. This is the Golden Globes predictions to take to the bank.

Jean Dujardin in The Artist
Best Drama

The Descendants
The Help
Hugo
The Ides of March
Moneyball
War Horse

Winner: Hugo
Why: For two reasons: By process of elimination and Hugo is the year’s best drama (as Movie Fanatic named it the best film in our Top 10 Movies of 2011). The Help, The Ides of March and Moneyball are in the “great to be nominated” mold. The Descendants should be happy just to be recognized by the Foreign Press. Lastly, War Horse’s award chances are slowly fading. So, it too should be “happy to be nominated.”

Best Comedy/Musical

50/50
The Artist
Bridesmaids
Carnage
Midnight in Paris
My Week with Marilyn

Winner: The Artist
Why: First off, The Artist is neither a comedy nor a musical, but because it is a favorite to win all sorts of awards, it will win -- regardless of its category. The winner of this category should be Bridesmaids, but given the parameters mentioned, The Artist is your winner.

Best Animated Film

Arthur Christmas
Cars 2
Rango
Puss in Boots
The Adventures of Tintin

Winner: The Adventures of Tintin
Why: Tintin is an international superstar and this is the awards show where the honors are bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Adventures of Tintin is a Best Picture-worthy film, so this category is a lock.

Best Foreign Language Film

The Flowers of War
In the Land of Blood and Honey
The Kid with a Bike
A Separation
The Skin I Live In

Winner: In the Land of Blood and Honey
Why: One of the toughest categories of the night. Angelina Jolie is beloved by the foreign press and her attention to the Bosnian war gives In the Land of Blood and Honey its leg up. But, A Separation is considered one of the best films of the year, regardless of the geography from which it arose. On the other hand, The Flowers of War is an astounding film and it stars an international movie celebrity in Christian Bale. The Skin I Live In features a famed global director and star in Spain’s Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas. Like we said -- a very tough category. Given the subject matter and its superstar director, give this by a hair to Jolie and In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Angelina Jolie on the In the Land of Blood and Honey Set
Best Actor in a Drama

George Clooney, The Descendants
Brad Pitt, Moneyball
Ryan Gosling, The Ides of March
Michael Fassbender, Shame
Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar

Winner: George Clooney, The Descendants
Why: If for no other reason than Clooney gave the best performance of the year… period.

Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical

Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Brendan Gleeson, The Guard
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 50/50
Ryan Gosling, Crazy, Stupid, Love
Owen Wilson, Midnight in Paris

Winner: Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Why: When Dujardin and Clooney go toe-to-toe at the Oscars, picking the winner will be difficult. But, at the Golden Globes, the winner of Best Actor at Cannes will be taking home the Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical trophy.

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

Kenneth Branagh, My Week with Marilyn
Albert Brooks, Drive
Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Viggo Mortensen, A Dangerous Method

Winner: Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Why: This category comes down to Plummer versus Brooks. Because of his body of work and lack of an awards chest, give the edge to Plummer for a career best performance in Beginners.

Best Actress in a Drama

Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Tilda Swinton, We Need to Talk About Kevin

Winner: Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Why: It’s Meryl’s year. Davis is a close second, but Streep did Thatcher as no one else could and gave the best overall acting performance -- male or female -- of 2011.

The Iron Lady Star Meryl Streep
Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy

Jodie Foster, Carnage
Charlize Theron, Young Adult
Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids
Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn
Kate Winslet, Carnage

Winner: Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn
Why: An honestly tougher category than would be expected. The musical or comedy element of the Golden Globes makes this difficult to call. Knock the Carnage actresses off the winner’s podium as they cancel each other out. Theron turns in a career best performance in Young Adult, but with no redemption at the end of the film, it will be hard to give her the Golden Globe. Williams is Marilyn Monroe in every way and the best part of the film. Wiig is a revelation in Bridesmaids, and she co-wrote it, but in the end this is Williams’ award for her uncanny performance as an international icon.

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

Shailene Woodley, The Descendants
Octavia Spencer, The Help
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Berenice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain, The Help

Winner: Jessica Chastain, The Help
Why: In the end it really comes down to The Help’s Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer. Give it to Chastain if for no other reason than this year’s Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture nominee had the best year. Beyond The Help, Chastain riveted in Take Shelter, The Debt, Texas Killing Fields, Tree of Life and Coriolanus.

Best Director

Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
George Clooney, The Ides of March
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo

Winner: Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Why: His film wins the award for Best Picture, Musical/Comedy.

Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture

Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, Kaui Hart Hemmings, The Descendants
Steve Zallian, Aaron Sorkin, Stan Chervin, Michael Lewis, Moneyball
George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon, The Ides of March

Winner: Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Why: See Best Director and Best Comedy/Musical.

Best Original Score in a Motion Picture

Ludovic Bource, The Artist
Abel Korzeniowski, W.E.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Howard Shore, Hugo
John Williams, War Horse

Winner: Ludovic Bource, The Artist
Why: The Hollywood Foreign Press will reward one of its own as The Artist racks up the wins.

Best Original Song in a Motion Picture

Hello Hello, Gnomeo & Juliet
The Keeper, Machine Gun Preacher
Lay Your Head Down, Albert Nobbs
The Living Proof, The Help
Masterpiece, W.E.

Winner: Hello Hello, Gnomeo & Juliet
Why: Elton John is God-like to the Foreign Press and his Hello Hello from Gnomeo and Juliet is Beatles-esque and that only helps his chances.

Even though The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is not set to debut in theaters until December 14, director Peter Jackson and his team have done an amazing job rolling out just enough information to keep us teased. There is a trailer and Jackson’s video diaries and now the latest is a photo that appeared in the LA Times of Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.

Martin Freeman in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Bilbo looks quite serious in the above still, sword in hand and ready for some sort of action.

Jackson is returning to Middle Earth after his time helming the Lord of the Rings trilogy that resulted in him winning the Best Director Oscar for Return of the King.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the prequel to those films and follows J.R.R. Tolken’s first Middle Earth tale that surrounds Mr. Baggins and his first quest outside of the Shire.

Mark Wahlberg has done it again, coming in first at the weekend box office with his latest, Contraband. The smuggler’s tale earned $24 million in its first weekend of release. The thriller also stars Kate Beckinsale (to be seen this weekend in Underworld Awakening) and Giovanni Ribisi.

Mark Wahlberg and Lucas Haas in Contraband
Coming in second was the latest Disney classic to get the 3D makeover after The Lion King triumphed in the fall, Beauty and the Beast. The classic film’s re-release earned $18.5 million. Where Lion King 3D scored a first place spot for two straight weeks, Beauty and the Beast had to settle for second place, albeit an impressive take with over $18 million in tickets sold.

Tom Cruise kept chugging along as his Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol came in third, adding another $11.5 million to its total. The second new film of the weekend, the Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah-starring Joyful Noise, came in fourth with a respectable $11.3 million. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, like Ghost Protocol, continues to impress even though it arrived before New Year’s. The latest Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law tandem took in $8.4 million.

Last weekend’s record-breaking film, The Devil Inside, fell to sixth place and banked $7.9 million. Meryl Streep’s The Iron Lady marked its national release, landing in tenth place with $5.3 million.

Golden Globe Awards: Winners Include The Artist, The Descendants

The Golden Globes began with Johnny Depp strolling across the stage to present the intro to Hugo, but soon after, the awards started pouring in and the first went to Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners.
Berenice Bejo and Jean Dujardin in The Artist
The winners of the night were pretty even. The Help, The Artist, The Descendants and Hugo proved that they are early Oscar leaders. When Martin Scorsese took home the Best Director award, Hugo’s chances for Oscar nominations shot through the roof. Octavia Spencer won for Best Supporting Actress for The Help and aided that film’s opportunities for Oscar gold.

But, The Artist’s awards for Best Score, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Picture kept that film in the driver’s seat to be the early Oscar favorite. George Clooney also continued to prove he is the man to beat for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars and with his film’s win of Best Picture, the Oscar race for Best Picture is only getting hotter.

More on what the Golden Globes winners mean to the Oscar race in the coming days.

One of the night’s highlights has to be the awarding of the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Morgan Freeman. He received the golden trophy from Sidney Poitier and Helen Mirren. His speech was sincere, powerful and reminds us why he is a national treasure.

Oscar Watch: How the Golden Globes Affect Nominations

$

The Golden Globes handed out its trophies last night and now the question has arisen: What does it mean to the potential Oscar nominees? The nominees for the 2012 Academy Awards will be announced January 24. Which films that took home Golden Globes can expect to see their odds increased by their victory at the annual Hollywood Foreign Press Association gala?

George Clooney in The Descendants
First and foremost, The Descendants got a huge bump last night with its victory as Best Motion Picture, Drama. We all knew that George Clooney was the front-runner for Best Actor, but by beating out Hugo, The Help, The Ides of March, Moneyball and War Horse, it inched closer to front-runner status for Best Picture at the Oscars.

But, and this is a huge but, by definition its chances to win are muddled by the fact that the front-runner currently is The Artist. That film won Best Comedy/Musical at last night’s fete and The Descendants' victory in the Drama category does nothing to squelch that.

The Golden Globes always throw a wrench in the prediction process by separating its films into Musical/Comedy and Drama. As such, the list of the best pictures of the year reaches 12 films. One thing is for sure, year after year, and that is that the winners for Best Comedy/Musical and Best Drama will see themselves nominated for Best Picture when those nominations are announced. Movie Fanatic does not think that The Descendants' victory at the Globes does anything to hamper The Artist’s moniker as the favorite.

What the Globes did accomplish is give us a clear picture of who the favorites are in the acting categories, specifically Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Meryl Streep (what are her Top 10 movies?) won for The Iron Lady and Octavia Spencer took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy for The Help and therefore, those two are your Monday morning front-runners. Although Michelle Williams won for Best Comedy or Musical Actress for My Week with Marilyn, she hardly puts a kink in the armor that is Streep’s march to a third Oscar.

Octavia Spencer in The Help
Now, with Best Actor, we think Clooney is still a lock to take home the Oscar. But, The Artist’s Jean Dujardin is without a doubt still in the running. He won for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, and will likely have to settle for second place come Oscar time.

One person who saw their Oscar chances suddenly jump is Madonna. By winning the Best Song for her Masterpiece from W.E., she has surely inched her way into the Best Song category for Oscar and may even increase her chances for beating any one of the animated films that usually win for Best Song at the Academy Awards.

The same can be said for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin. The Best Animated Film winner at last night’s Golden Globes can now be officially ordained the front-runner to win the category at the Oscars.

The victory of Martin Scorsese, who won for Best Director for Hugo, actually muddles things when it comes to the Best Director race for the Oscars. He certainly deserves the nomination, and we think a win, but where that puts Spielberg for War Horse (or Tintin), Alexander Payne (The Descendants), Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) and George Clooney (The Ides of March) is anyone's guess. In the weeks after the nominations are announced, we suspect a front-runner will emerge, but for now, the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards is up for grabs.

Brolin portrays Jones’ character as a younger man when Smith’s character goes back in time as part of the plot for the third flick in director Barry Sonnenfeld’s MIB trilogy.

Morgan Freeman Reflects on Career, Winning Cecil B. DeMille Award

Moments after accepting his lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes -- the Cecil B. DeMille Award -- Morgan Freeman stepped backstage and spoke with the press about the honor. He was his usual affable self, but at the same time, was incredibly reflective and it was easy to tell that he was immensely moved by the honor, particularly receiving it from longtime idol Sidney Poitier and his Red co-star Helen Mirren.

Morgan Freeman at the Golden Globes
“Sidney Poitier represents my guiding beacon light,” Freeman said of what the trailblazer means to him. “When his career cranked up I was a teenager and felt certain seeing him that there would be room for me. I have always said to him, and the world at large, that most of us need something to guide ourselves -- something to hang our hopes and dreams on and Sidney has been my guiding star. I always tell him that. I always make him understand that. I am so honored that he thinks of me as a friend.”

One of the most memorable parts of the Golden Globes broadcast was when Mirren took the microphone to honor Freeman and gave him a good ribbing about only appearing with her onscreen once in his esteemed career. As for what was going through Freeman’s head, he simply said, “I too was so chagrined that I only got to work with her once. I’ve been a big fan of hers since the time she was doing Prime Suspect on English television. I’ve given anything to have a shot at her more than once. She’s an extraordinary actress… extraordinary. I’m working on getting something together to work with her again.”

Freeman waxed poetic about working on stage all those years before getting his big Hollywood break and what he meant in his acceptance speech about not feeling like he has ever truly worked a day in his life when he adores his profession so much.

“No, I’ve never felt like I was working. Rehearsing… kind of,” Freeman said and laughed. “I remember doing a little play in New York when I was doing what we call dungeon theater. That was where you find a basement somewhere, or somebody’s living room, and put on somebody’s play. I remember making $5 per performance and we were going to do three performances and going to rehearsals in a snow storm. That was work.”

When asked about a moment in his career that stuck out, Freeman didn’t hesitate. “In 1986 I won an audition for a movie called Street Smart. I played a pimp, movie didn’t do all that well, but I got a nomination for it,” he said and laughed. “I have all my life wanted to be in the movies. When my career started to move along, it started on stage. I was 20-something years on stage, most on the New York stage. Every time I did a play, my friends would say, ‘This is the one that is going to take you to the coast.’ But it wasn’t until 1987 when Street Smart came out that I got to the coast. That would have been the catalyst for me. That’s the one big boost.”

Octavia Spencer spoke of the role film has in reminding Americans of their history when she accepted her Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for The Help. Freeman shared her sentiment and clearly felt that in some small way, his illustrious career may have influenced some as well.

“When I was growing up, and I think it’s still true, one of the more effective avenues for learning American history was movies. I was always a big reader as a kid, but movies are so impacting,” Freeman said. “I would like to think that because of the trajectory of my career that I might have had a little input in some of America’s history and some of the changes that have taken place in our industry.”

The Three Stooges: New Pic of Fab Three

The Farrelly brothers, a comedy power duo, are celebrating a comedy trio in their latest picture, The Three Stooges. 20th Century Fox has released a new still from the film that features Chris Diamantopoulos, Will Sasso and Sean Hayes as Larry, Curly and Moe!

The Three Stooges Pic
The Three Stooges film, as imagined by the brothers Farrelly, follows what happens when the trio of funnymen is dropped off at an orphanage as babies. The entire film is broken into three shorts, much as the original trio’s films were, and follows them as they take their trademark working class humor and push it on high society.

Joining Diamantopoulos, Sasso and Hayes in The Three Stooges are Jane Lynch, Stephen Collins, Jennifer Hudson, Sofia Vergara and Larry David (who we think could have been a Stooge back in the day). Look for the film when it debuts April 13.

The Devil Inside Exclusive Interviews: Fernanda Andrade and Film's Creators Reveal Evil Within

When The Devil Inside arrived, it shocked by landing in the first place position at the weekend’s box office, setting a record in the process. No one was more surprised than William Brent Bell (director, co-writer and editor) and Matthew Peterman (producer and co-writer). The creative duo, along with the film’s star, Fernanda Andrade, phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview about their sudden success and the origins of the horror hit.

Fernanda Andrade in The Devil Inside
"It’s pretty amazing that so many people want to talk about the movie and are passionate about it in different ways. I don’t know if it’s something we expected, but it’s certainly cool to be able to be part of the zeitgeist and become water cooler conversation, that kind of thing,” Bell said.

“It’s sparking a discussion, a debate and people are talking about the movie. That is the coolest thing,” Peterman added.

Andrade cannot believe this journey she’s been on since the film shot in Romania. The cast and crew didn’t even know if The Devil Inside would ever be seen. “It’s been amazing. It’s been incredible. I think we could only have dreamed of it that it would be bought,” Andrade said. “But, that it made it into theaters is a huge victory for us, let alone what it did last weekend in theaters. So, we are all over the moon.”

The Devil Inside is a found-footage, faux-documentary film with the feel of another horror hit, Paranormal Activity. It proved a challenge for the actress in that it was unlike anything she has ever experienced as a performer. "It was really different in the sense that the camera was always following you -- there was no time to stop and reset. It was a continuous form of it,” Andrade said.

“In that way, it was really a gift for all the actors involved because we got to constantly live and breathe this story. We never knew where the camera was going to land. I mean, we did a little, but it wasn’t in the usual way that we were used to working.”

Andrade was taken by the film’s exploration of exorcism and how Bell and Peterman took a different take on the genre than the actress had ever seen onscreen.

“Brent gave us books and I did as much research as I could -- considering I literally flew out to film it a week after I got the part,” she said and laughed. “One book specifically really resonated with me, Interview with an Exorcist. It gave me wonderful insight into the whole concept of demons, angels, the divine and man -- all that entire thing -- how the system works, the machinery of exorcism. It was something I had never read in such an accessible form. It was usually in such a religious or academic form, but it was never as practical as it came across in that book, from the people that do these exorcisms. It was really enlightening. It forced me to look at it from an entirely different angle.”

Filmmakers Bell and Peterman had always seen their film being shot in a found-footage, faux-documentary manner. When working with a tight budget, that mode of filmmaking proved a perfect fit.

“Hollywood was becoming more difficult to get movies made. The writer’s guild strike happened, and it was around the time the economy tanked. A friend of ours said, 'I love this project, why don’t we make it off the grid, outside of the studio system?' He raised $800,000, which is not a lot of money to make a film,” Bell said. “So, we decided that we would make it as a documentary-style film.”

By making it in this style, they found they further brought out the heart of their characters. “We further fell in love with the characters in the story that we could never have imagined doing it the traditional way,” Bell said.

When it came to casting, Bell and Peterman thought it necessary to have unknowns portray the characters -- not only because of the budget, but because of the ability to take an audience on the journey that would feel more real.

“With the level of authenticity we wanted to achieve, we wanted people who were watching the movie, even for a second, to believe that what they were seeing might actually be real,” Peterman said. “In order to achieve that, we couldn’t have recognizable faces. It’s funny, when the movie started going, Paranormal Activity hadn’t come out. It arrived about a week before we left to go shoot this. We, at first, wondered what it would do to our film. But, we put our heads down and kept going. Then… Paranormal blew up. It was funny -- agencies started calling us wanting to pitch their more recognizable actors in the movie [laughs]. They knew we were leaving to shoot the movie. Because Paranormal had done so well, it was a hot topic. In a very opposite Hollywood scenario, we were turning down people with cache in favor of people that no one had ever heard of. People were even offering to do the movie for free. It would have made it completely wrong.”

When it came to their lead, the moment they met Andrade, they had their Isabella. “She has a very natural look about her. She is very capable and relatable. We met her and she is so inquisitive, and that is what we want from Isabella,” Peterman said. “She’s supposed to want to find answers and have that kind of enthusiasm about the mystery. She’s perfect.”

When asked about her director, Andrade’s thoughts led us to believe The Devil Inside set was a love fest. “It was a dream to work with Brent and Matthew. He had such a specific idea, yet allowed so much freedom and trusted us with these characters,” Andrade said. “At the same time he was able to get exactly what he needed.”

Andrade realized that The Devil Inside was striking a chord when the trailer debuted (above) that showed, in grainy black and white, the reaction of the audience as they jumped out of their seats during a showing. “When you read something, you have an idea of what it’s going to be,” Andrade said. “I was surprised with everything when it came to this movie. All of the elements that I really fell for when I read the script were still very present in the movie. That’s what makes it really special."

William Bell Directing The Devil Inside
Now that they have a number one movie under their belt, of course everyone wants to know what’s next for Peterman and Bell.

“There’s a couple new projects that have been announced -- one is at Warner Bros and another one that will probably be the one we do immediately,” Bell said. Mirroring the mystery of their first film, the subject of their next flick is under wraps. “We can’t talk about the subject matter. But, I can tell you that it is going to be shot in France. It’s a modern-day exploration of a traditional horror mythology that we all know and love, but done in a way that’s never been done before.”

A new poster has arrived for one of 2012’s most anticipated films, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Sure, we’re excited for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, but who wouldn’t be enthralled by the genre-mashing picture that combines horror and history that is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Poster
In the new one sheet, we see our Vampire Slayer in Chief. It is clearly the Lincoln Memorial, with a twist, as our 16th president has an axe in hand, ready to kill off those nasty vampires.

The film is based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote the screenplay. It stars Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jimmi Simpson, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell and Anthony Mackie (who told us about the film in our exclusive interview).

The Timur Bekmambetov-directed thriller lands in theaters June 22.

While backstage talking to the press at the Golden Globe Awards after his win for Luther, Idris Elba confirmed that he will indeed be back for Thor 2. Elba played Heimdall in the first Thor and admitted that his role is needed in the film’s sequel.

Idris Elba in Thor
Thor 2 for sure,” Elba said. Rumors have been swirling that the actor was going to be a part of The Avengers. But, he quickly put those theories to rest. “The Avengers, I’m not sure about, but Thor 2, we’re going at it again.”

Elba’s confirmation of being in the sequel comes days after Jaimie Alexander admitted that she too will be back as Sif when Thor 2 hits theaters November 15, 2013.

The Artist continued its run for Oscar gold by picking up 12 nominations for the annual best in cinema awards by BAFTA. The British Academy Film Awards will bestow its annual honors February 12. Close behind The Artist’s 12 nods are the 11 nominations for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in what should be a close race between the French-made The Artist and the U.K.-developed Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Joining The Artist and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in the Best Film field are The Descendants (recent Golden Globe winner for Best Drama), Drive and The Help.
