0
0

Chronicle is unlike any film you have seen before. We saw the flick last night and although we cannot say too much, this is a movie that we will look back on years later and talk about the birth of a powerful filmmaker in Josh Trank. The film has released its third TV teaser trailer and it captures the joy of teens that discover they have superpowers. Now, knowing teens, don’t you think the following is what they would do with new powers, instead of saving the universe? Us too!

Chronicle arrives February 3.

Exclusive: John Rosengrant Talks Real Steel, Special Effects Oscar Nod

0
0

It’s not every day that one gets to speak to a filmmaker on the day he or she discovers they have received their first Oscar nomination, as Movie Fanatic has done today with Visual Effects nominee John Rosengrant. He earned his nod for his work on Real Steel, now out on DVD and Blu-Ray. The story of boxing robots and the young boy and his father who shock the world struck a chord in Rosengrant. To him, his real charge was about creating that connection between animatronic robot and child that charges the film with a surprisingly powerful emotional connection.

Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo in Real Steel
He got his start in special effects being mentored by the legendary Stan Winston. After two decades with the master, he has established himself as the go-to for effects and has repeatedly worked with James Cameron on such films as Avatar, Titanic and Terminator 2. Rosengrant is also credited with bringing the unreal into the real on Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2 as well as the upcoming The Hunger Games.

Rosengrant phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to talk about his Oscar nomination day, working on Real Steel and the influence that Cameron and Winston had over his creative power that has given him such a stellar career.

Movie Fanatic: First of all, congratulations on the nomination!

John Rosengrant: It’s a good way to start the day [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: How did you hear? Were you awake?

John Rosengrant: I got up at my usual time, 5:30 or so, and went over to the computer to see if we got lucky. I had my phone by me and one of my co-nominees, Dan Taylor, sent me a text that said, “Congrats.” It was very cool.

Movie Fanatic: This is your first. Can you put the feeling into words yet?

John Rosengrant: To actually get the nomination, it is really special. It is such an honor. It’s the pinnacle of awards for the movie industry. To have this opportunity is extremely amazing.

Movie Fanatic: It’s for an astounding film in Real Steel. What was your most unique challenge that the film had for you that has resulted in your Oscar nod?

John Rosengrant: First of all, it was a really fun filmmaking experience. And, they’re not always that way [laughs]. This, going in, was very organized from the top down. The producers, like Josh McLaglen -- who I worked with on Titanic and Avatar -- and (Real Steel director) Shawn Levy… all a very tight-knit team. We had a blueprint going in and we stuck to it. There are so many visual effects films where the script isn’t even finished. Not this one. I think it paid off in huge dividends. Everyone knew their role, how they were going to contribute and how important everyone’s contribution was to the film. It was one of those perfect storms where everything went right.

Movie Fanatic: What set the Real Steel experience apart from the rest of your esteemed career?

John Rosengrant: The most important things we were doing was working on connecting the robots with Dakota Goyo (who plays Max), because this is a father and son, and a robot and a boy story. By having our animatronic robot there performing with Max, it paid off.

Movie Fanatic: You’ve worked with a varied list of directors and I’m curious what the norm is for special effects. Do you get a strict vision from them, or is it something where they let you create and work with you along the way?

John Rosengrant: It’s a different experience every time, unless you’re going back in with someone who you have worked with before. Sometimes it’s trying to help educate. Sometimes, that can be tough. We have to let them know what we can bring to something. Shawn Levy and Steven Spielberg on Real Steel were advocates of having practical things on the set for the actors to play off of.

Movie Fanatic: How did you find yourself in this end of the business?

John Rosengrant: When I was five years old I saw Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein on TV and not long after that The Bride of Frankenstein. I was hooked. I wanted to make monsters and creatures. I saw The Wizard of Oz, and it was just captivating to me. I knew at that moment that this was what I wanted to do. My parents were supportive, but didn’t know how to help. My teachers were going, “Oh my God, what is this kid doing?” [Laughs] But, it was just persistence and a little luck that landed me out here in California. I met Stan Winston, who I worked with for 25 years, [that] was very pivotal.

Dakota Goyo in Real Steel
Movie Fanatic: Whether it’s Stan or something else, what's a moment in your career that personally stands out for you?

John Rosengrant: I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of films that have these seminal moments. Working for Stan provided me those opportunities. He was my mentor. Most importantly, he was a great man and a friend. He treated all of us like family. It was a great environment. It was very creative and he fostered that kind of team spirit. He always pushed for innovation which has become ingrained in me. I would say he was pivotal, but working on all the Jim Cameron films that I have, being around a director like him, is quite amazing. He’s someone that is very driven and talented on so many levels. That’s continually an inspiration to work with him. I even worked with Steven Spielberg! I feel very fortunate.

Don't miss Real Steel, out now on Blu-Ray and DVD!

The Grey Red Band Trailer: When Wolves Attack!

The Grey is landing in theaters January 27 and Open Road Films has released the movie’s first red band trailer. We’ve already seen in previous The Grey trailers how Liam Neeson and his band of oilmen crash land in the Alaskan wilderness. Their joy over surviving the crash is tempered when they learn they are in the middle of a pack of wolves, eager to make them lunch.

DVD Previews: 50/50, Paranormal Activity 3 and Real Steel Score

The week in home video is heating up, even if it’s freezing outside for much of the country. Real Steel, one of the surprise smashes of 2011, arrives on Blu-Ray and DVD as does the instant horror legend Paranormal Activity 3, the true-to-life 50/50, The Whistleblower, Restless and a foreign treat in Punished.

Paranormal Activity 3: The third installment of the Paranormal Activity series goes back to the beginning to discover how a pair of sisters become targeted for a life of horror. Katie and Kristie, as we well know from Paranormal Activity and its sequel, have a small little issue with a certain supernatural power that seems to live for ruining their lives. In Paranormal Activity 3, audiences are taken back to when the two were children in the 1980s and how a little game of Bloody Mary may have unleashed hell.

Paranormal Activity 3 Blu-Ray
The extra that stands out in particular is the Lost Tapes segment. Think the film itself is scary? Try sitting through Lost Tapes without leaping out of your chair. The Blu-Ray contains two versions, the theatrical and an unrated version… if you can handle it!

Real Steel: Hugh Jackman stars with a scene stealer in Dakota Goyo in a heartwarming tale of father and son bonding over a boxing robot. Yes, you read that right. The astonishing film is powerful in every way, not the least of which is the Oscar-nominated special effects (don’t miss our exclusive interview with effects master John Rosengrant). In a world where boxing was deemed too dangerous for humans, robots have taken over and Jackman’s former boxer believes he has a winner in a ‘bot that his estranged son discovered. The two will bond over boxing and life on the road.

Real Steel Blu-Ray
Extras on the Real Steel Blu-Ray include a feature on how champ Sugar Ray Leonard helped choreograph the fighting sequences, plus deleted and extended scenes, bloopers and two features that show how the magic of Real Steel was achieved: Building the Bots and The Making of Metal Valley.

50/50: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star in the movie based on the true story of the film’s screenwriter, Will Reiser. The writer is a longtime friend of Rogen and the film follows closely to what really happened when Rogen found out his friend had cancer and a 50/50 chance of beating it. You will be surprised how funny this film is while delving deeply into a serious subject. Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston co-star in roles that should have been considered for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Oscars. The best extra on the entire disc is the audio commentary of Rogen and Reiser.

50/50 Blu-RayThe Whistleblower: The true story of a Nebraska cop Kathryn Bolkovac -- played by Rachel Weisz -- who heads to Bosnia to help with the U.N. peacekeeping efforts. She encounters a cover-up of a sex scandal and as the title suggests, prepares to tell the world. The film was released limitedly in 2011 and hopefully will find a larger audience on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Whistleblower Blu-Ray
Restless: Mia Wasikowska is the sole reason to see Restless. The actress continues to astound in her work and she manages to make a decent film great, simply with her talent. Wasikowska portrays a terminally ill teenager who finds love in the final days of her life.

Restless Blu-Ray
Punished: Now available on DVD, Digital Download and Movies on Demand, Punished is the story of a real estate tycoon (Anthony Wong) who has his life suddenly turned upside down when his daughter is kidnapped. When Wong turns to his bodyguard to bring his daughter home, his charge heads off to find her and achieve justice. As his bodyguard gets closer to the truth, Wong gets personally involved and decides to extol revenge himself. A powerful, action-packed film that is sure to thrill the home video audience.

Joe Carnahan was sitting with his The A-Team star Liam Neeson over dinner when he mentioned the script for The Grey. Fast forward over a year and the duo are reuniting on the big screen as the thriller is set to hit theaters January 27. Carnahan sat down with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview to chat about the power of Neeson, his challenges on the icy shoot and how the film -- about a group of oilmen who survive an airplane crash only to have to outsmart a pack of grey wolves in the Alaskan wilderness -- gave him a further appreciation for the wild cousins of man’s best friend.

Columbia Pictures has released a new behind-the-scenes feature for Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance that takes fans right back on the road with Nicolas Cage and his dark superhero. The film lands in theaters February 17 and features Cage's bounty hunter for the devil as he might be able to do something nice to ease his conscious that is severely haunted by his day job working for the lead demon of the world.

Ciaran Hinds portrays the devil in Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance (brilliant casting!) and Fergus Riordan is a young boy who Cage must save from the unholy one to keep him from becoming the Antichrist.

After her heralded casting as Gloria Steinem in Lovelace, Demi Moore has opted out of the role. Moore leaves the production as it is currently being filming -- forcing the film’s casting director to move quickly to replace her.

Moore was rushed to the hospital on Monday night for exhaustion and she has entered a facility today to recover and will be out for an undisclosed amount of time.

Movie Fanatic wishes her well in her recovery.

Evangeline Lilly on Her Warrior Elf in The Hobbit

Evangeline Lilly has traded in one remote filming location on Lost for another in The Hobbit. The star, currently seen in Real Steel on DVD and Blu-Ray, has been in New Zealand playing the elf warrior Tuariel in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. “In some ways, it feels really familiar,” she told Entertainment Weekly of the shoot locales. “I’m from Canada, and New Zealand feels like you took all the best bits of Canada and squished them onto a tiny island like Hawaii. I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of the South Island. I seem to be landing really great locations on a lot of my work. I hope that continues, knock on wood.”

Evangeline Lilly in Real Steel
Lilly spills the beans on her character and what to expect from her in The Hobbit. “She is a warrior. She’s actually the head of the Elven guard. She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers,” Lilly said. “And she’s lethal and deadly. You definitely wouldn’t want to be caught in a dark alley next to Tauriel.”

The actress promises that although her character is hardly seen in An Unexpected Journey, in the second film -- There and Back Again -- her role is greatly expanded. “She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved,” Lilly said. “Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding that I had expected it to be. There’s a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it’s a little more pressure.”

One for the Money: Katherine Heigl Talks Being Stephanie Plum

0

When Katherine Heigl decided to tackle the character of Stephanie Plum from the blockbuster series of books by Janet Evanovich, she knew the character had legions of fans and looked forward to portraying someone so revered by so many. “There's something about her that's really endearing. You just really like her. She's a decent person with a big heart, and she's fearless and courageous but perpetually puts herself in situations where she's in over her head. But, she never takes herself very seriously,” Heigl told Movie Fanatic.

One for the Money Star Katherine Heigl
“She also doesn't take other people too seriously. She has this great perspective on life that happens to be really funny and witty and charming as well. I just like everything about Stephanie, and she's that hapless heroine that we don't get a lot of. Normally you get the overly perfect heroines that you can never aspire to be like, but Stephanie's a sort of everyday girl.”

When Heigl, who also serves as the producer of One for the Money, was first approached for the role, she was filming The Ugly Truth. She hadn’t read the books, but as soon as she dove in, she could not put them down. “I became obsessed with them,” Heigl said and laughed.

Knowing the fans loyalty to the series and being one herself, she felt as producer she could guarantee a bit of quality control for the Stephanie Plum nation. “I got really excited about the idea of bringing it to film. I really loved the producer role on this because it was so important to me to keep the film really close to the book, because that's what I fell in love with -- millions of people have fallen in love with them. It was great to get to be in the room and have an opinion”

Another appealing aspect of the One for the Money page to screen effort is that Heigl saw this not solely as a “chick flick,” but as a potential film series that had huge crossover appeal. “What's interesting about the books is that they all have a murder mystery tie-in with the bounty-hunting aspect. It's not all just about romance. It's not all just about comedy,” Heigl said. In this first book, and now film, there is a darker edge that is frankly more of a pure detective type movie than a fish out of water flick. “That gives it a vibe that is not purely chick-flick-ish. I'm really excited about it because I think it does appeal to everyone. It isn't just a girls' movie, and I think we're working hard to advertise it so everyone knows that. It's a good time for everyone, men included.”

In One for the Money, Heigl portrays a woman in Plum who is at her wits end. She is broke, having just lost her job as a lingerie saleswoman. As her car is being repossessed, she keenly is aware she needs a job immediately. She turns to her cousin, who runs a bail bond business, and takes the job as a bounty hunter. Her first job is to bring in the man who wronged her in high school, Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara). Needless to say, if you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work! Along the way she is aided by a fellow bounty hunter Ranger (Daniel Sunjata), who shows her the ropes.

The film’s cast includes an icon in Debbie Reynolds, who plays Plum’s grandmother. To say Heigl soaked up the legend’s experience is a gross understatement. In particular, Reynolds story about working on Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly struck a nerve. “I was complaining one day about the hours, as I normally do, and Gary (Lucchesi), our producer, said, ‘Oh, you ought to hear Debbie's story about her hours on Singing in the Rain.’ It was so horrifying what that woman went through to make that movie,” the former Grey's Anatomy star remembered.

“She was so young at the time. It was her first big break, and she's working with an icon. And they were dancing and singing, and I think she said they were working something like 20 hours a day and she would just get a few hours of sleep on the sofa in her dressing room and then go back to work a few hours later. It was just so much that I couldn't really even believe it. Then she told me how she had to dance with bleeding feet at one point. Gene Kelly, he wanted to stop it. Like, ‘I guess we should stop. Debbie's feet are bleeding all over the scene.’ And she was like, ‘No, no. I'm fine. I'll wrap them up. I'm fine. I can keep going.’ So then I stopped complaining about my hours [laughs].”

One for the Money: Katherine Heigl in Action
Another joy in the One for the Money production was that Heigl’s Plum had to be pretty proficient at shooting weapons, something Heigl has done for years… but never has she had so much fun. “I've been yielding guns in films since I was 15, but they're fake and there's no actual bullet in them,” Heigl said. “It was really intimidating and nerve-wracking the first time they put a loaded gun in your hand. Plus, they'd just given you a 20-minute spiel about the dangers of this gun, so you're freaking out.”

Producers took her to a shooting range and gave her a real gun and a light bulb went off and now Heigl is dragging her husband, musician Josh Kelly, to go shooting to share in her joy of weaponry. “I really enjoyed it because it was super satisfying and cathartic on some level. And then I turned around and Jason O'Mara was shooting a gun that had fire shooting out of it. I wanted that one! I started wanting to go to the gun range regularly. Now I shoot clay pigeons with Josh. I really like to shoot things… I know, it's funny.”

Will Hangover 3 Start Shooting This Summer?

0

The Hangover was one of those cultural explosions that caused the entertainment Richter scale to go off the charts. The second film, not quite as much -- yet it made over a hundred million dollars more than the first! Our first Hangover banked $467 million, while the second earned $581 million. When Movie Fanatic caught up with the film series’ director Todd Phillips in May, he said, “We always envisioned it as a trilogy. The third would be very much a finale and an ending.”

The Boys are Back!
Looks like the third movie is going forward and The Hollywood Reporter is saying that stars Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper are negotiating to return for a cool $15 million each. With a film series that makes more money as it goes along, consider this deal done.

Warner Bros. is hoping to conclude all business sides of The Hangover 3 journey and start filming the flick sometime this summer. The movie will be set in Los Angeles and all involved are eyeing a May 2013 release.

Which Film Should Win the Academy Award for Best Picture?

0
0

The 84th annual Academy Award nominations were released January 24 and the Academy chose nine films to compete for Best Picture. They could have gone with 10, and thus we have some Oscar snubs and surprises.

Those that made the cut for Best Picture run the gamut and despite what many pundits believe - that The Artist is a lock to win - Movie Fanatic believes that we have a true horse race this year!

Asa Butterfield in Hugo
Martin Scorsese’s Hugo has the most nominations in 2012 with 11, including one for the director. Usually, Oscars go to the film in a majority of categories when a movie gets as many nods as Hugo did. Yet, there is The Artist factor.

It has been topping critics’ lists across the country and won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, albeit for Musical/Comedy not Drama. The winner for Best Picture Drama at the Golden Globes was The Descendants. Star George Clooney is considered a favorite to win his category, and his weight could carry that film to the golden statue.

Then, there is the fact that the Academy likes to award films that further social discussion. The Help sits firmly in that sentiment’s wheelhouse. But, it should be satisfied with the acting honors it will achieve… and that’s another poll -- stay tuned!

We want to know, who do you want to win the Oscar for Best Picture?

Man on a Ledge Exclusive: Jamie Bell on the Thriller, Making Tintin

0
0

Jamie Bell steals scenes left and right in Man on a Ledge. The actor, who got his start in Billy Elliot and riveted us in The Adventures of Tintin, sits down for an exclusive chat with Movie Fanatic to talk about all of the above.

Jamie Bell in Man on a Ledge
In the thriller Man on a Ledge, Bell portrays the brother of Sam Worthington. His character is integral in the plot to prove Worthington's innocence while simultaneously getting revenge on the man who did him wrong (Ed Harris). Bell tells us exclusively about the process of making Man on a Ledge and his challenge while filming the stop-motion The Adventures of Tintin.

Movie Fanatic: You, as we all know, shot to fame as a kid in Billy Elliot. How did you find your way into show business at such an early age?

Jamie Bell: I started dancing when I was six. There never was an objective behind it at all. I had hoped that it would move me out of my hometown. I might be able to get down to London, a bigger city. But then, I made my first film, it was by chance that it even came about. That was another decision that was driven by something else. I didn’t necessarily want to be an actor. I wanted to be in movies. I just gradually fell in love with it, really. I really liked being somebody else. Ever since then, it’s been the same thing including a love for the craft and enjoying what I’m doing. I love the travel and playing parts that expose me to different periods and collaborating. It’s one of the more collaborative industries, it requires that of you. I like all those people, all working towards the same goal.

Movie Fanatic: Do you think you’re still learning about the craft as you go along?

Jamie Bell: I think so. I don’t think you can ever be fully versed in this craft -- especially when you work with so many different people. You learn from their ways of doing things. Each new person you work with presents an opportunity to learn something.

Movie Fanatic: Man on a Ledge, when you first read the script, what struck you the most?

Jamie Bell: The layering of the storylines. The way the story unfolds, the way it surprised me. I feel like it lives up to the promise of the genre -- also, the fun-ness of my character. I got to do most of the fun stuff in the movie [laughs]. Just to be a part of a big movie, that is always good.

Movie Fanatic: It could easily be Sam Worthington’s movie, but at the end of the day, it is really an ensemble piece with Elizabeth Banks, Ed Harris, Ed Burns and Anthony Mackie…

Jamie Bell: Yes, totally! Everyone is playing their part to fulfill the greater good of the whole movie, which fills in all the blanks and creates the big picture. To be part of a collection of all those talented people, it’s really great.

Movie Fanatic: One of those is Ed Harris, such a powerful actor. What did you take away from the Ed Harris experience?

Jamie Bell: His understanding of character. He can take something that seems somewhat generic, and inhabit it behaviorally unlike anyone else. His approach was to completely embody something. He plays a great bad guy. He’s so calm and collected. He is still his character between takes. He understands the language of his craft. That’s what actors aspire to do.

Movie Fanatic: This movie is a suspense thriller, but would you agree that at its heart it is a film about redemption?

Jamie Bell: It’s about the proving of innocence and fighting for something you believe in, while upholding the truth. But, yeah, it’s also a ride. It’s a quick pace movie.

Movie Fanatic: How was it working with Steven Spielberg on The Adventures of Tintin?

Jamie Bell: When you’re an actor, you want to set your bar really high and try to work with those people who do that too. Steven is clearly one of those people. He is a master of visual storytelling. Working with Steven, it was a great lesson in how to stay young in this industry. I think he made that movie like it was his first. He has such a passion for movies. You can’t exhaust him. He’s spontaneous as a filmmaker. He loves performers. And he’s a regular guy at heart. He’s also a collaborator who isn’t afraid to say, “I need help with this.” I found that really refreshing. His collaboration with Peter Jackson was monumental -- two very successful directors who came together. Making Tintin, it was Steven’s first foray into a different world and medium. To see him harness that was so inspiring.

The Adventures of Tintin Photo
Movie Fanatic: Was the stop-motion filming an added challenge in The Adventures of Tintin, or is it that, at the end of the day, you are just playing a part?

Jamie Bell: With motion capture, there is no environment. You have to become your environment. At its core, it’s still performance in the same way you would in a live-action movie.

John Carter TV Spot: Taylor Kitsch Leaps Off the Screen

Sam Worthington is back in Wrath of the Titans and as we see in not one, but two new TV trailers below, he has his hands full. The sequel to Clash of the Titans lands in theaters March 30 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D and also stars a couple of UK heavyweights in Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

Warner Bros. has also released an official synopsis for the mythology driven epic and Movie Fanatic has it for you:

A decade after his historic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington), the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson), is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.
