Chronicle Exclusive Interview: Cast Chats Redefining Superhero Genre

0
0

Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan have the unique distinction of appearing in a film that pushes the envelope of its genre. Superhero movies are certainly all the rage. In Chronicle, the trio portray teenagers who awake one day to discover they have super human attributes. Director Josh Trank, who also wrote the screenplay, has crafted the most unique of films in that it is the most realistic portrayal of teens suddenly gifted with greatness. Russell, Jordan and DeHaan sat down for an exclusive video interview to take us inside the genre-busting film.

Chronicle opens everywhere February 3. Be sure to check out the latest trailer and stay with Movie Fanatic for our mind-blowing review.

21 Jump Street: An Explosive Poster

The show that made Johnny Depp (will he cameo?) a star in the 1980s is coming to the big screen on March 16. 21 Jump Street stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as Miami police officers who, fresh out of the police academy, find themselves going undercover in a high school. The film has released a new poster and it is dynamite to say the least.

21 Jump Street Poster 2
Tatum and Hill are Schmidt and Jenko, and although they may have been adversaries in high school, their common bond over busting criminals has made them friends today. Fresh on the beat, the two are asked to infiltrate a high school drug ring. In the process, they create hilarity, suspense and wickedly good fun.

Chronicle Movie Review: Brilliant Birth of Superheroes

0
0

When Hollywood recently began delving into second tier superheroes from the comic book world, Movie Fanatic wondered why someone didn’t simply create new ones that were born on screen. No need for a graphic novel or the like, simply give us an origins story that is as explosive as that Dark Knight guy. Chronicle is that film and writer-director Josh Trank should be exalted for his wildly inventive story and explosive new film.

Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell and Dane DeHaan in Chronicle
Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan play Seattle teens that while out one Friday night at a party, make an astounding discovery. They stumble on a deep hole in the ground where deep inside a faint noise is emitted. Being curious kids, they go in it to discover what exactly their find is. They awake the next day, completely unaware what happened after entering the hole.

The power of the story is only enhanced by Trank’s use of the found footage style of storytelling. DeHaan’s Andrew has bought a video camera to Chronicle the abuse he is enduring at home at the hands of his father and documenting his sick mother’s final weeks. As the high school trio discovers they now have superpowers, it is used for a much more joyous task of capturing their supernatural talents. The film nails it in the sense that today's teens would be less likely to sew a Spidey suit and save the world as much as they would use their recently discovered powers for pranks and the like.

Chronicle is the most original of origin stories. It follows the superhero playbook, but adds its own twists around every corner. It is unlike any film you have ever seen and it is still haunting us to this day. The movie illustrates the classic line that with great power comes great responsibility. Andrew is deeply troubled and his being accepted with the popular kids, because of his new bond with Jordan’s Steve and Russell’s Matt, is short lived. When the evil that is jealousy enters the picture, Andrew begins his descent into madness.

Thus is established the classic lexicon of the superhero playbook. The hero, oftentimes, only embraces his role when he has to stop another with equal power from extolling harm. Two of these three characters are on a collision course that will play out with harrowing results across the skyline of Seattle.

What also aids in Chronicle’s originality, when it comes to its place in the superhero movie genre, is its point of view. As the film progresses, Andrew is able to use his powers to have the camera follow him and his friends without needing to actually hold it. At that point the film becomes a found footage film that fully embraces the concept as no other film has in recent memory. The audience, who by this point is more than invested in the film, is treated to a voyeuristic view of a story that teeters on complete chaos.

It is harrowing, haunting and when we look back on Chronicle in the future, it will stand as the birth of a gifted filmmaker in Trank as Jaws was seen as the birth of the great Steven Spielberg.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Charlize Theron Nails It

Fresh off our first look at Sam Claflin as Prince William (and also another pic of Kristen Stewart as Snow White), Universal has released a chilling new still of Charlize Theron and her Evil Queen.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Charlize Theron
Sure, we’re excited to witness Stewart as a Snow White unlike any we’ve ever seen. Chris Hemsworth does not make a bad Huntsman either. But, from the early Snow White and the Huntsman trailer, it appears that this is Theron’s show.

The Oscar-winning actress is devilishly delicious as the Evil Queen and brings the fear factor through the roof.

The film arrives in theaters June 1.

Top 10 Football Movies: Celebrating the Super Bowl

0
0

As the New England Patriots and New York Giants do battle at the Super Bowl February 5, Movie Fanatic has taken the opportunity to look back at Hollywood's history on the gridiron. On this Super Bowl weekend, we proudly present our Top 10 Football Movies. Any one of these 10 films will get your batteries charged and have you shouting, “Are you ready for some football?!”

10. Invincible
Mark Wahlberg (What are his top 10 movies?) soars in his portrayal of real life Vince Papale. He was a thirty-year-old South Philadelphia bartender who bucked the odds and played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976. Invincible shows why we love football movies as it has audiences leaping from their seats and cheering uncontrollably.

Mark Wahlberg in Invincible
9. Knute Rockne, All American
The 1940s classic told the story of another real life footballer and gave us one of film’s and our culture’s greatest lines: "Win one for the Gipper." It also starred a man who would eventually become our president, Ronald Reagan. Knute Rockne was a Notre Dame player and coach who inspired his players to greatness. One of Hollywood’s first football movies is also one of its 10 best.

8. The Blind Side
Sandra Bullock scored an Oscar for Best Actress for The Blind Side, which also was nominated for Best Picture. It is an inspiring story that exemplifies the saying, “It takes a village.” Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a Tennessee woman who took in a homeless teen into her family. The film warms the heart while showing how football can serve as a catalyst to greatness. The Blind Side’s real life subject, Michael Oher, is currently playing for the Baltimore Ravens.

7. The Longest Yard
The 1974 version of The Longest Yard is on our list, not the Adam Sandler “remake!” Burt Reynolds stars as an inmate who is part of a prison football team charged with playing the facility’s guards in a game of pride. The guards will never know what hit them.

6. Friday Night Lights
Before there was the astounding Friday Night Lights TV show, Billy Bob Thornton starred in the 2004 film version. The story follows a Texas high school football team that crafts a football season for the ages. The film excels in its showing of how high school football is godlike in its stature in Texas, particularly in small towns like Odessa where Friday Night Lights takes place. Riveting, raucous and all outstanding, the film is one that will not soon be forgotten by anyone who witnesses its majesty.

Friday Night Lights Cast
5. North Dallas Forty
The Dallas Cowboys ruled the 1970s NFL (to be fair, the Pittsburgh Steelers were right there with them). North Dallas Forty is a fictionalized version of how pro football is done in Dallas, circa mid-70s. Nick Nolte scored in his career-defining role as a wide receiver nearing the end of his playing days that rallies his team to triumph. The film explores the sex, drugs and rock and roll atmosphere of the NFL in that era.

4. Any Given Sunday
Oliver Stone turned his camera on the world of professional football in this 1999 classic. Al Pacino starred as a Miami coach who, when his star quarterback goes down to injury (Dennis Quaid), has to deal with the modern NFL quarterback as embodied by Jamie Foxx. He is brash, talented and self-centered. But it is through him that the team must win. Cameron Diaz stars as the owner and turns in a career best performance. Foxx also excelled as Willie Beamen. Stone’s take on pro football in Any Given Sunday was electric and completely unforgettable.

3. Jerry Maguire
The relationship between wide receiver Rod Tidwell and his agent Jerry Maguire centers this 1996 Cameron Crowe film. Cuba Gooding Jr. won an Oscar for his role as Tidwell and his pro football player may be flashy and believe he’s worth more than he has shown on the football field, but at his core, he is an everyman and that is why audiences so identify with him. He simply wants a new contract to ensure his family’s financial security. When he emerges as Tom Cruise’s newly broken sports agent's only client, the two will form a bond that raises Jerry Maguire beyond a terrific sports film to one of Hollywood’s greatest films.

2. Rudy
Long before he adorned Hobbit feet in Lord of the Rings, Sean Astin scored as Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. He was an Indiana kid with dreams of wearing the golden helmets of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Deemed too small and weak by the coach, and even some in his family, Rudy never gave up until the day arrived when he was given his chance. This is one of those movies that makes grown men cry and rightfully so. It is inspiring and more importantly, Rudy is one of those films that can be watched repeatedly -- further proving its power as not only a great football film, but a fantastic movie… period.

1. Remember the Titans
Another football true story and another top 10 football movie... in fact, it's our number one! Denzel Washington stars as a newly minted coach of a formerly segregated post-Civil Rights school. Will Patton is the team’s former coach and now sits alongside Washington as his assistant. The school is immersed in racism that spills onto the football field. But, if Washington can get his players on the same page, not only will they change racial sentiments at the school, but potentially serve as a mirror to society and how we should all live. Remember the Titans? We could never forget you.

Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans
Honorable Mention: Brian’s Song
Brian’s Song is a TV movie, so it doesn’t make our list, but deserves mention. The movie is a must-see for any sports fan as it inspires in its showcasing of the friendship between two men and the power that that bond brings to all those involved.

Skyfall Set Pictures: James Bond in Action

We’ve got a few photos of Daniel Craig, busy at work filming Skyfall -- the latest James Bond film. As the actor showed us in his last two outings as Bond, the man can run like the wind. Therefore, it's only fitting we begin with a pic of him running his tail off on the London set.

Daniel Craig on the Skyfall Set
Next up, what would James Bond be without the superspy sporting a gun? Craig is wielding his weapon as he filmed an action scene in the English capital. We’ve got a ways to go, but the twenty-third Bond film opens November 9. And don’t miss the official Skyfall still.

The Avengers: Loki Picture and Ad Banners

Hot on the heels of the new The Avengers banner debuted by a European theater chain, Marvel Studios has unleashed their latest banner and a new photo of the film’s villain, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). What we know of the story so far is that the Thor evildoer has landed on Earth and seeks to destroy the planet -- thus, why Samuel L. Jackson has to assemble the world’s greatest superheroes.

Tom Hiddleston Stars in The Avengers
The heroes in the action banner feature Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow and the Hulk. Look for the film to contend for the moniker “movie of the summer” when it debuts May 4.

Weekend Movie Preview: February 3, 2012

0
0

It's quite frightful out there this Super Bowl weekend as the cineplex is filled with three new movies meant to cause a bit of shock and awe. To offset the fear factor exhibited by The Woman in Black, Chronicle and The Innkeepers, Universal is releasing the heartwarming true story Big Miracle. Which will you see this weekend?

The Woman in Black: Daniel Radcliffe busts out of the Harry Potter mode in this horror movie based on the stage play. Radcliffe is a young English lawyer who goes to the estate of a client of his who has passed away. He is there to get her affairs in order, only he discovers there is something seriously supernaturally wrong with the house. Although he is alone in the house, we all know Radcliffe is hardly by himself. Ciaran Hinds co-stars and brings the creepy to a whole new level.

Big Miracle: Ted Danson, Dermot Mulroney, Kristen Bell, Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski star in the “you won’t believe it’s a true story” film Big Miracle. The tale follows three whales that got stuck beneath the ice near Barrow, Alaska. The film is simultaneously a race-against-time thriller, family movie, romance and touching comedy that takes audiences back to a time where the whole world united to save three rather large creatures. Check out our Big Miracle review for more.

Chronicle: One of the most original films Movie Fanatic has seen in some time, Chronicle chills us to the bone. Filmmaker Josh Trank has taken the found footage sub-genre of movies and given it new life. Three Seattle teens awake to discover they have superpowers. In a terrific stroke of innovation, Trank (who also wrote the film) has the kids enjoy their new-found power by pranking people and generally having fun. It’s all a game until one of the three takes a seriously dark turn. My Chronicle review delves deeper into why this is a film that will be remembered for some time.

The Innkeepers: Ti West wrote and directed this weekend’s second haunted house movie. The Innkeepers follows Sara Paxton and Pat Healy. They play the establishment's weekend workers in the final days of the hotel’s existence before it closes for good. Determined to prove that the Inn is haunted, the duo document everything in hopes to make it big in the paranormal world. What they find will change them forever.

The Innkeepers Movie Review: Not Your Usual Haunted House

0
0

Ti West wrote and directed The Innkeepers while filming his last movie, The House of the Devil. Even though he knew he was in a house that served as a film set, West felt haunted. Audiences should thank whatever spooked the filmmaker as The Innkeepers is the rare haunted house movie that doesn’t hit you over the head with its terror. It is slow moving, boiling ever so slowly... until you find yourself screaming.

Sara Paxton and Pat Healy in The Innkeepers
The Yankee Peddler Inn is closing its doors for good after serving a small New England town for centuries. Sara Paxton and Pat Healy are Claire and Luke, the two laborers stuck working the front desk all weekend during the hotel’s final days. Come Sunday, the Inn will shut its doors. Both are heavily into the supernatural and from the opening moments it becomes clear, they believe their Inn is haunted. Before the weekend is up, they hope to document that fact with audio or video… they’ll take what they can get.

Adding fuel to their fire is the longstanding legend that a woman killed herself in one of the hotel rooms after her fiance left her at the altar over 100 years ago. When Claire begins to be convinced she sees the jilted woman’s ghost, The Innkeepers amps up its spookiness in the most subtle of ways.

Meanwhile, a washed-up Hollywood actress (Kelly McGillis) checks in for the weekend for some rest and relaxation. She too is shrouded in mystery and asks to be left alone. But, Claire has to let her know she is a huge fan. Their first meeting begins nicely, and then turns eerie. What does McGillis’ Leanne have to do with this supposedly haunted Inn? She now moonlights as a spiritual guru and can sense when something is spiritually awry.

West masterfully weaves his web of mystery as The Innkeepers is as much a thriller as it is a haunted house story. The director has firm control over this genre and the result of his efforts is a surprisingly effective film that works throughout without a single hiccup of pacing problems or plot lag that some other horror movies can suffer under.

What makes this movie, above all else, is the show put on by Paxton. The actress truly comes into her own in a performance that is concurrently electric and reserved, compelling and compassionate. The audience feels for Paxton’s Claire as this world she lives in begins to have the walls close in on her.

Oscar Watch: Moneyball Deserves Your Consideration

Moneyball landed itself a Best Picture nomination for the Academy Awards and it could not be more deserved. When we caught up with Brad Pitt, the film’s star and producer, in Toronto he told us that his movie works beyond the sports genre because “it’s complicated material. It’s not your conventional story or story line, with conventional character arcs.” That’s the beauty of the film. We believe that is central to why it is nominated for Best Picture.

Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane
If you haven’t seen Moneyball, do so before Oscar night. The story of Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane and how he shook up the over-a-century-old sport transcends sports to the very heart of human nature.

Check out our exclusive video interview with Supporting Actor nominee Jonah Hill on why he felt the film was one of his career best experiences.

Director Bennett Miller (previously nominated for the directing category for Capote) adds his two cents on the subject of Moneyball in another of our Movie Fanatic exclusive video interviews.

Moneyball has made fans out of audiences that would not normally see a sports movie. Between the stellar performances, expert direction and the screenplay writing collective led by Aaron Sorkin, the film is not only one of the best films of 2011, but one of the best sports films of all time. That is because it is so much more than a film about athletes.

Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt welcomed the opportunity to flex his muscles, both on screen and on the field. He has a moment in the film that caused many in our screening to leap out of their seat and that magic moment clearly resonated with the actor in his exclusive video chat with Movie Fanatic.

Of the nine films vying for Best Picture, Moneyball may not have the best odds to win. But then again, neither did the Oakland A's! It is an important film and a must-see for any Oscar fan, whatever genre of movie is your favorite.

The Woman in Black Movie Review: Radcliffe Rocks the Haunted House

0
0

Daniel Radcliffe has made the most curious, and brilliant, choice for his first role after a decade playing Harry Potter. The Woman in Black is a horror film, and that genre is not the usual move for an actor to tackle after a career-defining run. But, that is why it is so smart of Radcliffe. It sets him way apart from the Boy Who Lived. In The Woman in Black, he has chosen a wickedly smart, and downright scary, experience at the cinema.

The Woman in Black Stars Daniel Radcliffe
The gothic tale takes place in the early 1900s and finds Radcliffe’s Arthur Kipps recovering from a devastating life turn. His attorney is nursing a broken heart from when his wife died giving birth to their son. Now four, the boy is the only light in Kipps' life and even with him in it, he sees more sadness than smiles.

After his law firm gives him an ultimatum to return to work, he takes the assignment of getting a client’s papers in order at her remote mansion after she has passed. Once he gets there, the entire village is less than thrilled with his arrival. Why? Therein lays the heart of The Woman in Black story: What happened at that house that has the entire town frightened?

The young lawyer heads out to the haunted-looking house day after day in search of a will and anything that will give clues to the deceased’s final wishes. Kipps soon feels he is not alone and the house’s history appears to not be finished with anyone who walks the building’s halls.

Kipps becomes friends with Mr. Daily (Ciaran Hinds), the richest man in town and one who does not believe in any type of superstitious nonsense. Mr. Daily and his onscreen wife, Mrs. Daily, are the most effectively used parts of the film. Recent recipient of an Oscar nomination for Albert Nobbs, Janet McTeer is Mrs. Daily. She and Hinds have a volley in the film that is precious and also heartbreaking. They lost their son many years ago and the two are still in mourning, especially Mrs. Daily.

After the Dailys' reveal, the audience begins to put the pieces together. This village has a nasty habit of losing children to outlandish deaths. They blame The Woman in Black, a ghost-like woman who appears right before a child perishes. Guess what? Kipps has seen the titular woman on more than one occasion.

Radcliffe is solid as Kipps. Some have argued that he is too young to portray a widowed father of a four-year-old. But, what you have to realize is that people of that time married young. His performance is a great step forward for the actor seeking to move out of the shadow of J.K. Rowling’s world. Through him, the audience experiences the horror that is emanating from the screen. He’s in practically every scene and completely owns the film.

The Woman in Black runs into problems in the final moments of the last act. Its conclusion is less than satisfactory. Mired in the necessity of resolution, screenwriter Jane Goldman seems to have had to rush to her ending. The novel that the film is based on does not suffer that same fate and although it is difficult to bring a book to screen -- especially one that is so in the head of its main character -- we do salute the effort. The film is riveting enough, but not as gripping as it could have been.

Marvel’s greatest superheroes get their game on in The Avengers Super Bowl trailer. Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye are all well represented in the film’s latest teaser.

John Carter Trailer: Heading to Mars

John Carter used the biggest TV moment of the year to air its next trailer. The Super Bowl commercial is one of the most heralded advertising spots in media, and we’ve got the "extended" John Carter Super Bowl trailer.

Taylor Kitsch stars as John Carter, a Civil War vet who awakes on the desolate landscape of Mars and is swept into a war between two Mars cultures. Stay with Movie Fanatic as we fly to Arizona in two weeks to talk to the cast of the film and bring you some fantastic special features.

Taylor Kitsch is our Super Bowl MVP

0

Eli Manning of the New York Giants may have been the MVP of the game, but in our minds the Super Bowl MVP was Taylor Kitsch. He not only had one trailer premiere during the big game, but two! His most impressive was the teaser for John Carter, but let’s not forget the powerful work he did in the Battleship trailer as well.

Taylor Kitsch Picture
The former Friday Night Lights star is making quite a name for himself in Hollywood. He beat out a bevy of actors to nail the lead in John Carter, from the adaptation of the hero story penned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs.

And as we saw in the Super Bowl trailer for Battleship, Kitsch anchors an all-star cast that includes Liam Neeson and Rihanna in that film’s big game teaser.

Overall, the New York Giants may have won the forty-sixth playing of the Super Bowl, but the winner off the field was Kitsch who killed it in the arena of why many people watch the game: For those super soon-to-be greatly dissected game-time commercials.

Check out Taylor in the new John Carter trailer:

Don’t miss Taylor in the latest Battleship teaser:

The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer: One Superb Spidey

0
0

With its midnight debut, sarcastic humor and stellar pacing is the news that comes out of The Amazing Spider-Man second trailer premiere. In the hands of Andrew Garfield, Spider-Man circa 2012 is one who has a knack for the silly. Movie Fanatic was treated to a The Amazing Spider-Man event February 6 and after witnessing the film’s latest trailer, coupled with the extended footage we saw, one major notion rises to the top. That is: Director Mark Webb has done fans of the series a great justice with the reboot of the franchise.

Given the footage we’ve seen, and the trailer above, the director has crafted a Spider-Man world that is unrivaled. Our first glimpses of The Lizard (Rhys Ifans) and his alter ego Dr. Curt Connors are briefly in the trailer. Yet, we have to tell our readers that the sizzle reel that we witnessed contains an extended sequence with Ifans that has us fawning over the prospect of an origins story with what could be the series’ best villain.

The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3.
