Weekend Movie Preview: March 25, 2011

Only two movies hit theaters this weekend, but there are lots of really goo movies in week two or three if you haven't had a chance to catch those yet.

Two new flicks come out this weekend, Sucker Punch and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The two films couldn't be any different and definitely won't be competing for the same audience.

So which one will come out on top?  Sucker Punch has been on a PR kick for weeks now and it seems to be the better-known film. On the other hand, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is a sequel and will attract the book and original movie fans.

Sucker Punch:  This ensemble girl power film follows A young girl who is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility.

Sucker Punch Movie Trailer

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules: Greg Heffley is just entering 7th grade and he must spend time with his older brother, his number one tormentor, as his parents try to get them to bond.  He's also trying to impress his crush Holly Hills.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules Trailer

This weekend is not going to blow any box office numbers and will probably contribute to the continued demise of this year's box office.  It's down 21 percent so far from this time last year.

Sucker Punch will probably win this weekend's box office race, but still won't bring in a ton of dough for the studio.

The girl power action-fantasy film will probably bring in about $25 million and the middle school comedy about a wimpy kid will probably just top $20 million - those are my predictions.

There are a few successful layover movies from last week too.  Limitless did very well and will probably bring in some good numbers this weekend too.  Rango is in its fourth week and will probably still bring in a good number this weekend.  And finally, The Lincoln Lawyer is fantastic and didn't do as well as expected last weekend, look for it to bring a bit more this weekend as well.

Sucker Punch Movie Review: Disjointed Male Fantasy

$
0
0

Sucker Punch appears to be a girl power kickass action packed fantasy film on the surface; underneath it's anything but. The women are marginalized and portrayed as weak, which seems odd considering they are kicking butt - but it's only in their fantasy.  The real girls are weak and don't stand up for themselves.

They are dressed up like little dolls to be fawned over - wearing little clothing and way too much make up.  Their sexuality is even more exaggerated with their names (see below).

Girls of Sucker Punch

The entire thing is disjointed and filmmaker Zack Snyder tries to make a deeply intelligent movie with many different levels - but it just comes across as confused.

The Plot:

A young girl, whom we only know as "Baby Doll" (Emily Browning) is sent to an insane asylum by her evil stepfather after her mother dies and an unfortunate accident occurs for which she is completely blamed. In order to survive the harsh conditions and looming doom, including a lobotomy, she escapes into a fantasy world.  Baby Doll and her friends, Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), and Rocket (Jena Malone), are beautiful dancers in a theater with the institutions psychiatrist (Carla Gugino) as their dance instruction.

Emily Browning as Baby Doll

The movie represents a fantasy world within a fantasy world within a fantasy world. Not only do we go into one fantasy world, but the film is even further complicated by another world - in order to carry out their plans to escape, Baby Doll dances and it creates another world in which the girls are kickass action heros, on missions from some older man (think Charlie's Angels).

Kicking Ass in The Fantasy World

The Good:

As a gamer, you would be in absolute heaven in the world created by Zack Snyder.  He blurs the lack of story with some really cool shots and visual effects.  Snyder seems to hope all the visual distractions will make you forget about the confusing and disjointed plot.  It doesn't work, but the graphics are cool anyway.

Carla Gugino Is The Dance Teacher in The Fantasy

The Bad:

There is a plot very loosely dispersed throughout the movie, but it's so muddled by the other layers Snyder is trying to include that it's too hard to tell what's actually going on.  The girls are on seemingly senseless missions, killing dragons and robot creatures which is mixed in with the interesting storyline of the girls trying to escape the institutionIt would have been better to see more of that storyline throughout the film.

Epic Fantasy World

We needed to see more of Jon Hamm.  The actor was only in the film for a couple of seconds and it was a complete waste. If Snyder wasn't trying to make his film so epic, he would have been able to include more of the good stuff, like why the girls were in the insane asylum in the first place, the implications of a lobotomy, and more Jon Hamm.

Learning How to Survive

The movie could have depicted strong and intelligent women, instead it decides to focus on the sexuality and ruins any chance of being taken seriously.

If you're an avid gamer who likes to look at oversexed women, then you're going to love this one.  Anyone else will find it too long, too disjointed, and uninteresting.

Amy Adams has landed the coveted role of Lois Lane in the new Superman reboot from director Zack Snyder.

Adams will play the journalist and Clark Kent love interest in The Man of Steel, opposite Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner.

Adorable Amy Adams

Snyder released a statement saying, "second only to Superman himself, the question of who will play Lois Lane is arguably what fans have been most curious about.  So we are excited to announce the casting of Amy Adams, one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today. Amy has the talent to capture all of the qualities we love about Lois: smart, tough, funny, warm, ambitious and, of course, beautiful."

Superman: Man of Steel is expected to be released in December 2012.

Monsters Inc. 2 Will Be a Prequel

Pixar announced Tuesday that the new Monster Inc. movie is actually going to be a prequel to the original 2001 story.

In the original film Sully and Mike were a couple of blue collar workers in a factory that gave the world its power source.  The new film will go back to the pair's college days and explore how the big blue beast and eyeball with legs met.

Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of worldwide distribution, told Las Vegas theater owners that the movie would still star John Goodman and Billy Crystal.

Monsters Inc. Poster

“The film is a prequel that tells you a little bit about how [Mike and Sully] first met, attending Monsters University,” said Hollis. “Obviously everybody knows at this point Mike and Sully are amazing friends — the best of friends — but as it turns out, in this story, that wasn’t always the case. From the moment they met at university, they could not stand each other."

Sound interesting and might actually be better than a sequel.

The Monsters Inc. prequel is to hit theaters in late 2012.

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Arden Talks Source Code

Michael Arden is known for his extensive Broadway work, but he is now getting into films and television.  His most recent movie is Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Vera Farmiga.

Reel Movie News caught up with the actor to talk about his most recent work as Derek, a suspected bomber on a Chicago train.

We still don't know who the bomber is -- and Arden isn't giving anything away.

"I don't want to give too much away, but I think Derek has a certain view of the world and he feels like he needs to change it in a way," Arden offers. "It can be conceived as insane, but he sees it as a very simple act of cleansing the world of what he's meant to do"

Hmmm...intriguing.  To see if Arden is the bomber catch Source Code in theaters this Friday, April 1.

Read the rest of the interview below.

Actor Michael Arden

I know every passenger has a story. Talk about your character Derek.

I don’t want to give too much away. But I think Derek has a certain view of the world and he feels like he needs to change it in a way. It can be conceived by many people as insane, but he sees it as a very simple act of cleansing the world of what he’s meant to do. He could be completely certifiable, but I couldn’t think of that. [laughs]

What was your impression of the script?

I thought it was really exciting. I didn’t know what was coming from one page to the next. I found it quite suspenseful. I think what I was most struck by is that it really raises some interesting moral questions in terms of what power government plays and people play in the lives of its subjects and soldiers. It also raises questions of what’s right and what’s wrong in terms of when a soldier signs his life over to a military. Do they also sign all of the rights after they die?

It brings a human element of: when is service enough service? How much-even if it’s being used for good-should you be able to tamper with someone’s mind in this world that the writer created? I think the audience will reevaluate their moral responsibility.

You think about even just using Google and you can enter the wrong thing but it knows what you wanted to look for. These sites begin to know you and make decisions for you. In watching the movie, this was a world in a reality that didn’t seem too far fetched.

How was it shooting scenes on a train?

We shot on a soundstage on this amazing full sized train car that moved on hydraulics surrounded by green screen. What was really funny about it was the rocking motion back and forth, after a few months being on it everyday, when you get off you feel like you’re still moving. It was an exciting process because we were all on this train car for a long period of time. The movie repeats and repeats and repeats and slightly varies, so it was wonderful to really get to know different people on the train. By the end we really felt like a little family on the train. We had jokes and stories.

Was it strange re-shooting the same scenes?

Yeah, it was strange. You had to recreate each moment again and again with slight variations you had to be attuned to. From letting things that happened differently effect you in a different way. A door opened a different time or someone bumped into you, you’re starting your directory from the time before but it moved you to a different direction, it’s a great acting exercise. By the end of the month on that train, it was like doing the same thing over and over, we were all going a little bit crazy by the end. [laughs] The continuity and script supervisor definitely had their work cut out for them. The film only takes place in 8 minutes of time repeating over and over.

How was working with Jake and Michelle?

Wonderful; they’re both such fine, available actors. I worked near Michelle, but we didn’t have any scenes together. She was wonderful to watch. She’s one of those actors who opens themselves up onscreen. Her eyes are like pulling back band aids and letting you see inside of her. It’s beautiful to watch. Seeing how that translated on screen was really incredible. I was really lucky to watch her and learn from her and see how available, uninhibited and open she was in each and every take.

Jake’s such a pro, and so smart. He’s aware of everything throughout the whole script. He’d be like ‘well in the first scene you’re not in it but the guns facing this way in his pocket’. He’s such a smart actor and knows what’s going on in every department and every moment. You can tell he puts so much work and time and effort into thinking about his character and the action of the film. It’s really a testament to his background. He’s made so many great films. He brings all of that to each project. He’s also very giving. I had a great time filming my scenes with him. He’s very helpful and I felt very safe, like I could try anything. It was great experience working with both of them.

Talk about working with director Duncan Jones?

He’s incredible. He has such a vision for tone and feeling and I think people will be surprised and excited by this one as well. He knows what he wants the audience to feel at certain moments, like tension or humor or fear. He’s able to create an environment behind the camera, with his wonderful editor Paul Hirsch, who is a legend, he edited Star Wars. He’s working with the best, and you can see he’s putting together something very specific, like he’s performing surgery the entire time and at the end it’s like you’ve gotten a transplant and you don’t even know it. He’s very attuned to the moment and music. He’s very specific with the score, which was beautiful. He let us play in this playground he set up. It comes off as very alive.

Colter continuously goes back in time to correct something. If you could go back, what would you fix from your life?

Oh goodness. That got really deep. [laughs] I think if I changed anything in my past I wouldn’t be here now. I’m thrilled that I’ve had the experiences I’ve had, it makes me the complex creature I am. I’m really lucky to be where I am now.

What else do you have in the works?

I just finished doing a play on the west end. I’m about to be on this show called Off The Map on ABC, I’m on there for a few episodes until the end of the season. I’ve also been filming a movie called The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which is going to be really great. I also have a new movie called My Eleventh.

Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer says there is a screenplay in the works for a fifth Pirates movie, before Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides even hits theaters.

At the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas, Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall showed footage from the fourth film to theater owners attending the convention.

At a test screening for the film, audiences apparently loved the film and appreciated the fresh plot.

Jack Sparro Talks to Blackbeard

"The audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story," Bruckheimer said in an interview alongside Marshall. "So that will carry over into the next one, too, to give it something fresh and different. As long as the audience embraces this one, we'll certainly try to make another one. It's really up to Johnny. He loves the character."

Geoffrey Rush reprises his role as Barbosss and Penelope Cruz stars in this one as the daughter of Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane.

Bruckheimer also reveals the new film, done in digital 3-D almost didn't happen.

"Rob [Marshall] did an enormous amount of research with the cinematographer, and we finally went to Disney and said, 'Look, we really think we can do this.' And they thought about it for a while, because it increases the costs, but in the end, they agreed with us and said, 'Let's go for it."'

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters May 20, 2011.
