As Movie Fanatic sat amongst the throngs of those eagerly anticipating the new trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus at Wonder Con 2012, it occurred to us: Could Scott’s film be the sleeper most-anticipated movie of 2012? Given The Hunger Games, Twilight’s final chapter, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, this year could be epic. After witnessing scenes from the film that marks Scott’s return to space after the early 1980’s Blade Runner and Alien, prepare yourself for the magic that is... Prometheus. Tell us... does this movie not look awesome?

Battlestar Galactica fans, wonder what will be the next big thing we get from show veteran Katee Sackhoff? Be curious no more! We’ve got the first photo of the actress in the upcoming film Riddick. Sure, Vin Diesel returns to the role that made him famous, but our bet is on the fact that many are eager to see Sackhoff fly past her Galactica persona. The film series that truly began with Pitch Black has given Diesel one of his best characters. We’re truly thrilled to witness the next chapter of the space-born reluctant hero.

After Movie Fanatic left Wonder Con and was dazzled by the Prometheus presentation (including the new trailer), we put to use a Weyland Corporation business card we were given and voila! We’ve got a “commercial” for the fictional Prometheus company that arrived courtesy of that biz card that shows Michael Fassbender as you have never seen him before.

The Our Family is Growing commercial takes us to the time of the film, where robots debuting on the market are treated with the same fervor that was just seen with the release of the new iPad. We ran the TED Talk video featuring Guy Pearce’s character talking about the future of robotics, and now we can see the fruit of the company’s labor.

Josh Hutcherson on Peeta and Those Hunger Games

When Josh Hutcherson went in to audition for The Hunger Games, after reading the books, he knew exactly what part he wanted. It’s the one he got: Peeta. “He was the character I connected with by far the most in the book. I felt that I could play him of all the characters for sure,” he said and laughed.

The Hunger Games Star Josh Hutcherson
When he screen tested opposite Jennifer Lawrence, he just felt something click and had high hopes for scoring the part. “I hit it off with Jennifer right away. I had met her a couple of times at some events. We’re both from Kentucky and kind of had that automatic connection. She's such an easy person to get along with. And acting with her was incredibly easy as well. So for me, I felt it right away. We really hit it off.”

Peeta is quiet, yet he is able to turn on the charm when the camera’s on him once he gets to the Capitol, a trait with which the actor could seriously identify. “I am very much like that. I can be a lot more quiet and reserved with my friends and more of a subdued kind of personality. Then when I need to, I can turn it on and kind of be big and entertaining and whatnot. It was a lot like me in a weird way,” Hutcherson said. “As far as which side of him was more fun to play? I like the more quiet kind of version. As an actor, it's more interesting because you have to do more with saying less, which is always a challenge and always fun.”

He does share another trait with Peeta: Hutcherson believes he’d be alright if he had to survive in the wild. “I watch a lot of Man versus Wild so I think that's prepared me highly for this kind of situation. Because I grew up in Kentucky, I was always playing outside. I love hiking and camping and all those kinds of things. So I might do alright in the wilderness,” Hutcherson said.

Could he ever see doing a bold gesture as Peeta does professing his love for Katniss on national TV? “It's pretty bold! It's pretty bold. In the right kind of situation, if there was a situation like that where maybe I could help somebody out or really kind of help take care of somebody I care about, yeah -- I could do that.”

Of all the stellar actors on The Hunger Games set, it was Woody Harrelson (Haymitch) whom Hutcherson most had an affinity for and looked to learn something from. “I had a ton of scenes with him and just watching him, he is epic,” Hutcherson said, smiling. “He’s such an amazing actor. I've grown up loving all of his work and to be in scenes with him and watch him was definitely very big for me.”

When it comes to the future of Peeta and Katniss, the actor is thrilled to come back to the franchise to film the final two books in Suzanne Collins’ book series and further explore where their characters go after The Hunger Games.

“I'm just interested to see where I can take Peeta over the course of the story. He gets brainwashed and loses his mind. I believe it's in the third book, where he kind of starts to hate Katniss and has this thing out for her,” Hutcherson said. “I think that’s an interesting dynamic to play. It's going to be cool to take Peeta, who has been lovey-dovey and in love with Katniss this entire time, and flip it around and see what that's like to play that side of him.”

Even while looking to the future, Hutcherson comes back to the now to stress how eager he is for the first film to be released. “For me, excitement is building. This whole time we put a lot of work into it -- everybody has, and so it's been pretty anticipated for a while. So for it to finally be coming out, it's a relief I think,” Hutcherson said. “To have all this time and people have been wondering what it's like, for us to finally be able to say, ‘This is what it's like and now you get to see it’ is awesome. I am so proud of the film. I loved it thoroughly. And if I like a movie that I am in, that means that other people are going to like it too because I'm very, very hard on myself.”

During The Walking Dead season finale, what was almost as thrilling as that fantastic show’s closing episode, was the new trailer for The Raven. The film features John Cusack as the iconic poet Edgar Allan Poe, who is having a maniac take his writings and bring them horrifyingly to life. When citizens across Baltimore begin being killed in manners described in his prose, Poe becomes involved in the murder investigation in order to give detectives insight into where the killer may strike next.

The film lands in theaters April 27 and also stars Brendan Gleeson, Alice Eve and Luke Evans.

At least something good has come out of that juggernaut that was Batman and Robin. George Clooney starred as the Caped Crusader and Chris O'Donnell was Robin, as many remember, but it was the performance of Arnold Schwarzenegger as the film’s main villain that sticks out. Over at Tosh.0’s blog, he is featuring an insane fictionalized musical number called Batman, You Son of a Bitch. The song is sung by someone sounding a lot like the former California Governor.

The Hunger Games Movie Review: Hungry for More

$

0

Be still our beating hearts, The Hunger Games nation, the odds are ever in your favor with the film from Gary Ross. This is a case where the page-to-screen adaptation of a beloved literary series makes the grade. Sure, a tiny few things are altered, but fans of the story of Katniss Everdeen and the first cinematic chapter of her journey should be ecstatic.

The Hunger Games Star Jennifer Lawrence
First and foremost, Jennifer Lawrence could not have been more perfectly cast as Miss Everdeen. From the film’s opening moments we meet not only the actress as the iconic character, but the setting that this tale entails. She is destitute and is the anchor that barely keeps her family floating above water. The District 12 resident is about to meet her destiny as the Reaping is upon us. What is the Reaping, you ask? Once a year every child from 12 to 18 gathers and submits their name to be considered for the annual Hunger Games.

Years ago, this world was in the midst of a revolt. When the government secured control over the rebellion, the authoritarian leaders -- headquartered in the Capitol -- decided to “teach a lesson” each year on the anniversary of the uprising. They would hold a fight-to-the-death challenge fought by two kids from each District. The entire thing is televised to the world.

As the Reaping is taking place, we meet Katniss and her sister Prim, both eligible for the Games. When Prim’s name is selected in her first year of availability, Katniss volunteers as tribute and we’re off and running. The male selected for the games from her District 12 home is Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). Soon, they are off on a train to the Capitol with Effie (Elizabeth Banks), a government rep whose allegiance lies solely with her government. Then we meet Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), the duo’s mentor and a former winner of the Games himself.

The “honor” of this selection is shown by director Gary Ross as the pair pull into the station at the Capitol. It is a frenzied welcome reminiscent of the hometown visits by American Idol finalists. Peeta seems to relish it, while Katniss is not so sure.

The Hunger Games rivets on so many fronts. It is an origins story, but so much more. Ross has crafted a world of sights and sounds that are unlike audiences have ever seen before. The other crowning achievement of the helmer is his casting. Rarely has a book so effectively been cast for the screen. Hutcherson channels Peeta with an equal amount of panache and youthful awe. Katniss’ District 12 childhood friend Gale (who it appears has feelings for her), as embodied by Liam Hemsworth, is stoic and strong. While the three main stars, particularly Lawrence and Hutcherson, carry the film, the support cast excels.

Banks is a revelation as Effie, and Harrelson is Haymitch in every way possible. Donald Sutherland could not have been a more perfect choice to play President Snow, while Wes Bentley’s Seneca is the Games’ ringmaster and rivets in every scene. And then there’s the casting of rocker Lenny Kravitz as Cinna. The stylist to Katniss plays his part to perfection -- we almost want more from him.

The Hunger Games is a sweeping epic filled with suspense, romance and immense power. It stays with you long after the closing credits. Along with The Grey, Movie Fanatic believes the Suzanne Collins page-to-screen effort is the best film of 2012. We’ve seen the film twice now, and are eager to witness it again and again. That has to be the highest form of praise.

Some have compared the series to the Twilight Saga, but that is a fail on so many levels. For one, the books are much more adaptable to the screen. There’s also the fact that the story’s resonance is more universal, and not simply aimed at teenage girls and their mothers. This is a story for our time -- that appeals to women and men, of all ages.

The Muppets Exclusive: Fozzie and Walter on the Icons' Return

With The Muppets arriving on Blu-Ray and DVD, Movie Fanatic scored an exclusive interview with two of its stars, new Muppet Walter and the veteran Muppet, Fozzie Bear. The film, written by star Jason Segel and Nick Stoller, brought back the iconic characters and also introduced them to a whole new generation. Be sure to check out the film on home video and enjoy our chat with two of the film’s stars!

Kermit, Jason Segel and Amy Adams in The Muppets
Movie Fanatic: Walter, what does it mean to you to be part of the big screen return of The Muppets?

Walter: It means everything to me! If it wasn’t for The Muppets I wouldn’t be here -- or anywhere -- today. And I certainly wouldn’t be part of the whole Muppet family. I can honestly say: Before this movie, it was like I didn’t exist. But hey, look at me now!

Movie Fanatic: Who is your favorite Muppet and why?

Walter: I love all the Muppets. In fact, I worship the ground Miss Piggy walks on. (She likes that… a lot.) But if I have to choose one Muppet as a favorite, it would be Kermit. He can sing, dance, act, play banjo, ride a bike and somehow put up with all the other Muppets! He’s my role model, my hero… my amphibian idol.

Movie Fanatic: Now Fozzie, how was it to get the whole gang back together?

Fozzie: It was great! I didn’t even know we were apart, but when we all got together to make the movie, it was just like old times -- only louder.

Movie Fanatic: And what was the biggest challenge making this film for you, Fozzie?

Fozzie: Same as any movie we make -- the biggest challenge is always making sure you don’t get between Miss Piggy and the camera. Not a good place to be.

Movie Fanatic: Now Walter, you spend most of your time with Jason. You guys seem like real best friends…

Walter: Jason and I are like brothers. Just like in the movie, we went everywhere together and did everything together. (If you watch his other movies, you can sometimes see me in the background waving.) It was so much fun to make The Muppets with him… and to know that the Bret McKenzie song that we sang in the movie Man or Muppet won the Best Song Oscar explodes the cool meter. Would I work with Jason again? Absolutely! Why, have you heard something? I’m available. I can start today!

Movie Fanatic: Now Fozzie said he had to stay out of Miss Piggy’s way when a camera’s around. How’d you find her, Walter?

Walter: Oh, Miss Piggy treats everyone that way. “Hey you!” ”Move it, buster” and “Watch it, weirdo.” These are all terms of endearment from Miss Piggy. I got along great with her, especially when she found out I’d do absolutely anything she needed done -- from getting her dry cleaning to fetching her coffee to cleaning out her pool filter. You may not know this about Miss Piggy, but she really likes to be waited on.

Movie Fanatic: Walter, you sing so well in the film, who are your singing idols?

Walter: Oh, thank you. I never had a lesson. As for my singing idols: well, Kermit, of course. I’m a big fan of Weezer, OK Go and My Morning Jacket… oh yeah, and Beaker. He’s got a limited repertoire, but if you have a song with “meep” in it, Beaker is the man to sing it.

Movie Fanatic: And Fozzie, your comic idols as you’re the resident stand-up artist?

Fozzie, Kermit and Miss Piggy in The Muppets
Fozzie: I admire all the greats -- George Burns, Milton Berle, Gilda Radner, Lily Tomlin, Bob Hope, Jack E. Leonard, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Jack Black and, of course, my all-time comedy idol, Gags Beasley, who still writes most of my jokes.

Movie Fanatic: What’s next for you all, another movie perhaps?

Walter: Kermit has already asked me to stick around… so I guess I’m part of the troupe. And besides, Miss Piggy still has a really, really long “to do” list for me. What’s next? Hmm, let’s see: I have to go fetch her dog Foo-Foo from the groomers and then go online and blog about how wonderful she is. Busy day!

Fozzie: Lunch. I’m starved.

DVD Previews: Dragon Tattoo & The Muppets

There is variety and there is what we have with this week’s Blu-Ray and DVD premieres. There’s the ultra-violent, ultra-awesome The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Jason Segel’s bringing Kermit and the gang back in The Muppets, Jonah Hill’s hilarious The Sitter, the uber-dramatic Carnage with its all-star cast and Gary Oldman riveting in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Rooney Mara sizzles in the title role of David Fincher’s electric version of Stieg Larsson’s bestseller. Daniel Craig co-stars and the tandem of the actor and Mara is astounding. Visually arresting, intensely emotional and powerful beyond belief, fans of the book series will delight in the American film adaptation. The film lands on Blu-Ray and DVD with four hours of bonus footage that takes fans further into the darkness that is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The Muppets: Segel and writing partner Nick Stoller more than succeeded in bringing Jim Henson’s creations into the 21st century with The Muppets. The film is funny, heartwarming and has more sing-a-long songs than any Muppet movie I remember. The extras on the Blu-Ray/DVD Wocka-Wocka Value Pack Movie Fanatic received were mind-blowingly good. Not only did we get the film on DVD and Blu-Ray, but also the stellar soundtrack. Among the standout extras is The Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made, a making-of documentary that Muppet fans will rejoice over and a video of the first table read of the entire cast, including Amy Adams, that push this film from the should have… to must have!

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: Oldman earned an Oscar nomination for his role in the big-screen adaptation of John le Carre’s classic book of the same title. It is one of the most intelligent films of 2011 and requires much of its viewer. Don’t look away for one second or you will be left behind. The film features an all-star cast including Mark Strong, Colin Firth and Toby Jones.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Trailer

The Sitter: Jonah Hill may be earning raves for his dramatic work in Moneyball, but in The Sitter, he reminds us how talented he is at comedy. The classic babysitter comedy gets an R-rated incarnation with The Sitter that finds Hill’s character babysitting neighbor kids so his single mother can go on her first date in years. Hilarity… and madness ensue.

Carnage: Based on the stage play, Carnage features Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz as parents of two children who got in a schoolyard fight. The film very much feels like a stage play in its character-driven mode of plot motion. It falls flat, but we give it an “E” for effort.
