The horror film that everyone is talking about arrives April 13, The Cabin in the Woods. The film stars Chris Hemsworth and has been causing quite a buzz since it debuted at South by Southwest earlier this month. A group of friends head up to a… well, cabin in the woods and all hell breaks loose. But, this is not your usual haunted house story. There is something far more sinister at work here. Lionsgate has given us a clip from the film featuring the gang beginning a little game of Truth or Dare.

With only days until its March 30 release, Warner Bros. has released its final trailer for Wrath of the Titans. Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes also return as Zeus and Hades, respectively.

Men in Black 3: Hear Pitbull's Theme Song

Sony Pictures has released the theme song to Men in Black 3 and you can hear it below. Mr. Worldwide, aka Pitbull, samples the 1950’s hit Love is Strange, and the result is simply awesome. Of course, I am a huge fan of the Miami rapper, so I may be biased. Will Smith scored the highest of theme songs with the first film’s song of the same name. But, we think that Pitbull scores all his own in a uniquely sounding track called Back in Time. Of course the track should not be confused with Back to the Future’s theme by Huey Lewis of the same name!

Men in Black 3 arrives May 25 in IMAX 3D, regular 3D and 2D.

Dark Shadows: Second TV Spot of the Day!

It’s a Dark Shadows kind of day here at Movie Fanatic. We’ve gotten our hands on the second TV spot to debut in 24 hours from the Tim Burton film. It’s got a different feel than the first TV spot that debuted this morning and the background song is from the present. Where we had Bang a Gong accompanying the first spot, this time out we have one of our favorite songs of the moment: The Black Keys’ Howlin’ for You. Sure, it may be confusing how a song from 2012 would provide the musical accompaniment to a mid-1970s set film, but it works!

Goon Exclusive: Seann William Scott & Jay Baruchel Bring Hockey Back

There are only a handful of really good hockey movies from the last several decades, which is why Goon starring Jay Baruchel and Seann William Scott (soon to be seen in American Reunion) is such a treat. Sure, we had 2004’s Miracle, but when it comes to stories about the game and the guys who play it… the canvas is pretty bare. The standard for all hockey films was set by 1977’s Slap Shot starring Paul Newman. What Baruchel (who co-wrote the script for Goon) has achieved with his film is a work that is equally part tribute to the sport he loves, heartfelt love story and triumph of the individual who triumphs despite all the odds stacked against him. The duo recently sat down for an exclusive video interview to chat all things Goon.

Look for the film on March 30 in theaters everywhere featuring an astounding supporting performance by Liev Schreiber.

Anchorman 2 Confirmed: Ron Burgundy Lives Again

We’ve stayed classy all this time awaiting word that Ron Burgundy will return in an Anchorman 2. As Burgundy’s alter ego, Will Ferrell, appeared on Conan, word arose that Paramount has given the go-ahead to a sequel for Anchorman. When we spoke to Ferrell in 2011, he said, “The script’s good. We’re good. I’m not sure it can happen.”

Anchorman 2!
Not only is Ferrell back, but also two of the instant classic’s cast - Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. There’s no news as to whether Christina Applegate or David Koechner or Fred Willard will return, but Movie Fanatic believes two of the three will return. Applegate may be too busy with her hit show Up All Night to be able to get away.

Original film director Adam McKay is also back, which is astounding considering an anti-prophetic 2010 tweet. “So bummed. Paramount basically passed on Anchorman 2. Even after we cut our budget down. We tried.”

Guess everyone’s push for a sequel was not in vain!

Check out the video of Ferrell as Burgundy on Conan O’Brien:

Top 10 Hockey Movies: Goon Gets us Going

$

It is honestly rare that a hockey film shoots and scores. Goon, starring Seann William Scott as a bruiser with a true heart of gold, lands in theaters and reminds us that there are hockey gods and they occasionally -- over the century since film was first screened -- bless us with gold in the celluloid format. Movie Fanatic presents the Top 10 Hockey Movies of All-Time.

10. Youngblood
Sure, not the best movie movie out there, but as far as the limited subgenre of film that is the hockey film, the Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze movie compels in its picture that it paints about life in minor league hockey.

Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze in Youngblood
9. The Sweater
The astoundingly heartfelt story of a French Canadian boy who is on the receiving end of a hockey sweater from his favorite team’s rival is an animated short (it’s only 10 minutes). The film captures what it’s like to adore a local hockey team (here, the Montreal Canadians) and be given a gift of a jersey of a rival team (of all things… the Toronto Maple Leafs).

8. The Cutting Edge
Technically not a hockey film, The Cutting Edge is a figure skating movie. Yet, the hockey player at the center of it, as played by D.B. Sweeney, is a classic Hollywood hockey hothead.

7. The Mighty Ducks
Look, Emilio Estevez has financed his entire post-Mighty Ducks career, including amazing pieces of work Bobby, The Way and The War at Home, with profits from this series. The fact that it’s a children’s movie about a hockey team of misfits who triumph is beside the point. The Mighty Ducks is a film that celebrates the art and passion of hockey and inspires our younger generations to carry on the sport’s legacy.

6. The Rocket
One of the best hockey films is from Quebec and celebrates the life and times of the pinnacle of Canadian hockey heroes: Maurice Richard. He is the man at the center of this hockey hotbed of cinematic joy. The man managed to clash with the NHL as much as opposing players and all the while, inspired a Quiet Revolution in Quebec.

5. Mystery, Alaska
The passion of people who cherish the sport of hockey is what sets Mystery, Alaska apart. It is a game frequented by people who have a slightly different view on life than most. To say it’s an acquired taste is too tame of a description of the sport’s appeal. Yet, in Mystery, Alaska -- the movie manages to make a fan out of every soul witnessing the film.

Russell Crowe in Mystery Alaska
4. Idol in the Crowds
John Wayne didn’t just tame the West -- the Oscar-winning legend wielded a hockey stick with the best of them on screen. Idol in the Crowds arrived in 1937 and brought an ever-growing sport to more masses than it had ever dreamed of. Wayne’s Johnny Hansen, some could say, made the mold of what a Hollywood hockey player should embody.

3. Goon
We cannot say enough about the surprising film that is Goon. It’s a hockey movie, through and through. But, it is so much more. One part a celebration of a sport revered by so many, another aspect finds a love story between two souls destined to join their lives together. And a third ingredient makes this film one of the greatest hockey movies ever made: It doesn’t shy away from the game’s vivacious appetite for violence.

2. Miracle
There had to be so much pressure when a ragtag group of actors and filmmakers gathered to capture on film what was essentially a lightning shot of happenstance. Then again, those were the same expectations lofted towards a group of American hockey players seeking to win the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics. What audiences got was an impeccable vision of what that moment in sports history, not solely hockey history, meant to this nation, the world and the socio-political environment.

1. Slap Shot
Slap Shot stars Paul Newman as a lifer hockey player living day to day. The 1977 hockey movie mainstay continued the cinematic effort to bring the sport to the masses in the form of a comedy. Any movie with the Hanson brothers that celebrates those who live for putting a puck in the back of a net has to be the best of its ilk… ever.

Considering that The Hunger Games is an international phenomenon at the box office, it’s probably a good time to release the trailer for Jennifer Lawrence’s next film. Relativity Media has unveiled the trailer for the actress’ thriller The House at the End of the Street and it’s a doozy. The film bows September 21 and the studio has also released the official film synopsis and we have it below the trailer.

Synopsis: Seeking a fresh start, newly divorced Sarah (Oscar-nominee Elisabeth Shue; Leaving Las Vegas, Piranha 3D) and her daughter Elissa (Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence; X-Men: First Class, Winter’s Bone) find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret. Years earlier, in the house next door, a daughter killed her parents in their beds, and disappeared -- leaving only a brother, Ryan (Max Thieriot, My Soul to Take), as the sole survivor. Against Sarah's wishes, Elissa begins a relationship with the reclusive Ryan -- and the closer they get, the deeper they're all pulled into a mystery more dangerous than they ever imagined.

According to actress Naomie Harris, her Skyfall character is anything but a Bond girl. “She’s a field agent,” Harris said. “She’s very capable as Bond’s equal.” Movie Fanatic has a new video featurette introducing audiences to Harris and her character from the twenty-third James Bond film.

Skyfall brings Daniel Craig back as Bond and has cast one heck of a villain in the Oscar winner for No Country for Old Man’s Javier Bardem. Dame Judi Dench is back as M and Ralph Fiennes has joined the cast as someone we believe is being groomed to replace her.

Look for the film in theaters November 9.

They are siblings and never knew it. They meet at his memorial service and each seems to bring a different take on the new bond that will develop over the film. Mirror Mirror Movie Review: Tarsem Singh's Snow White

$

0

The Snow White express has started. In a move reminiscent of when Armageddon and Deep Impact both arrived in theaters within months of each other, Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman land in movie houses in much the same manner. Yet, to compare the two is hardly fair. The only thing congruent in both is the lead character whose skin is white as snow. Mirror Mirror is a family film and as such it truly will hit a nerve with those audiences in the best of ways.

Lily Collins Stars in Mirror Mirror
After a series of R-rated films such as The Cell and The Immortals, director Tarsem Singh was ready to tackle a family flick. He has found a perfect muse in Snow White (Lily Collins), the Seven Dwarfs and that deliciously devilish Evil Queen (Julia Roberts). The auteur’s vivacious visual style he’s shown on previous works is effervescent on Mirror Mirror.

In this live action version of the classic Snow White story, our heroine has been locked in her castle since her father disappeared in battle -- prior to that he had married a shrew, well, at least according to Snow. With the King out of the picture, the Evil Queen has been left to rule at will which usually involves suffering common folk and a legion of royal workers who are terrified at her every whim.

Knowing that Snow White is the rightful heir to the throne is why Roberts keeps Collins well out of sight. Things change drastically when a prince arrives who has millions and is in need of help from a pillaging band of dwarfs. He can save the kingdom from the queen’s reckless spending, simply by marring her. Only thing… he has eyes for Snow when she appears during a royal party in his honor. When it comes to the story itself, we leave you with this: You think you know the Snow White fairy tale? In the hands of Singh, audiences will realize that this historic story has permeated their subconscious. The helmer has things happen on screen armed with the knowledge that he has an audience’s history with the story already in his pocket. He can start an adventure in the third act, literally after the opening credits.

After Singh’s turn bringing Snow White to life, Movie Fanatic cannot wait to see what the movie magician comes up with next.

Twins Sequel Triplets Snags Eddie Murphy

Looks like Anchorman 2 isn’t the only film sequel to be announced this week, although the arrival of a Twins sequel -- called Triplets -- may not have the same resonance. Universal Pictures has announced that both Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger will return, and original director Ivan Reitman is set to come back as the film’s producer. The third part of the Triplets trifecta will be Eddie Murphy. On paper, this could be quite hilarious, especially if it maintains the heart and humor of the 1988 original.

Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins
Schwarzenegger is back on film with a vengeance since leaving the Governor’s office. Look for him in August in The Expendables 2, later on in The Last Stand and he is currently filming another film with Sly Stallone, The Tomb.

Goon Movie Review: Hockey Hilarity with a Huge Heart

$
0
0

Goon is a triumph on a multitude of levels. The Jay Baruchel, co-writer and star, love letter to hockey’s enforcers is hilarious, heartfelt and shows why the game is so adored by so many millions. The film stars Seann William Scott (soon to be seen in April 6’s American Reunion) as a bar bouncer, whose family lets their disappointment with his professional prospects be known at every turn. Fate intervenes when at a hockey game with his best pal (Baruchel) -- a player climbs into the stands to fight a patron. Scott’s Doug steps in and beats the player to a pulp. The local team’s coach sees something and gives the guy a chance to replicate what he did in the stands on the ice. The only problem: He's not such a great skater. Thus we have our first moments of hilarity!

Goon Star Seann William Scott
The film is based on the true story chronicled in the book Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into a Minor Hockey League. Doug Smith’s true story is slightly fictionalized in the movie, but its DNA is the same.

Scott is a revelation and this is his film to shine. The actor shows depth of character that has never been so illustrated in his prior work. He is as touch as nails. Yet, he is the type of guy who rushes to help an elderly woman cross the street, hold open doors for women and treats each human being with pounds of respect. But on the ice, he is as brutal as they come. It is a career making performance from an actor who was previously best known for being the source of laughs as Stifler in the American Pie movies.

The story is set that he and the league’s best enforcer of all time, played with panache by Liev Schreiber, are on a collision course. Schreiber’s Ross Rhea is out serving a suspension for a brutal hit on a groomed-to-be NHL star learning the ropes in the minors. That hit did two things, sent Rhea out of the game for weeks in what is likely his final season -- and also made the hockey phenom he knocked out tentative where he used to be tenacious. While Rhea sits out, Doug’s star explodes. He is called “The Next Ross Rhea” and Schreiber’s character is none too happy, thus feeding the fire of their eventual passing of the torch showdown.

Video has been removed.

Further evidence of the softy at heart nature of Doug is shown in the budding romance with a hockey fan named Eva (Alison Pill). Their courtship feels like something out of a classic 1950’s movie, rather than a film about one of hockey’s most brutal players. This is also where Scott’s star shines even brighter. You wonder how a woman could fall for such a, what seems on the surface, simpleton. Yet in the hands of Scott, not only is the romance believable, the audience is pulling for this couple to make it work.

With Goon, Baruchel has penned the best all-out hockey movie since Slap Shot (What are the top 10 hockey movies?). It is as funny as that film that starred Paul Newman, but exceeds it in many ways with its effective use of sensitivity of the human spirit.

The Avengers: Another International Trailer, New Scenes

The latest international trailer for The Avengers has some familiar scenes, yet it is the new scenes with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) that are the selling point here. Sure, we get the Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark speech about, "We have a Hulk" again. But, it’s so brilliant, it is a delight to witness it again. The Marvel superhero gathering also teases a bit more of what S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters looks like where Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is assembling his team of awesomeness.
