The Three Stooges Trailer: Suffer from Stoogation?

$

The latest trailer for The Three Stooges takes a wildly original approach to promoting a movie. The sixty-second spot acts as if it is a TV commercial for a prescription drug. Here they’re hawking Stoogesta, a pill that is used to treat the “three in six billion” who suffer from being a stooge.

From the minds of the Farrelly brothers comes this reboot of the comic trio. The filmmakers bring our Stooges into the 21st century in three vignettes, with one even putting Larry, Curly and Moe on a reality show. Look for the comedy in theaters April 13.

Mirror Mirror has been released and the battle of the Snow White movies has begun. On June 1, we get Snow White and the Huntsman, which carries on the Hollywood legacy of films with the same subject matter coming out like they do in Noah's Ark -- two by two -- as Julia Roberts told us in our interview (Remember Armageddon and Deep Impact?). The two are clearly very different incarnations of the classic fairy tale with Mirror Mirror aiming itself squarely at families and Huntsman garnering the action movie crowd. Yet the comparisons abound.

Can anything stop the box office march of The Hunger Games? Two new wide releases hope so with Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror making the effort as they premiere. A few other films also land in limited release, highlighted by the astounding hockey comedy Goon.

Wrath of the Titans: Although widely panned, Clash of the Titans arrived in 2010 and banked a half a billion dollars. Two years later, we get the sequel and it finds Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Sam Worthington reprising their roles. In the film it’s been ten years since Prometheus’ (Worthington) great defeat of the Kraken and the world once again has a massive threat. The story is much more tightly told, the action sequence actually pop in 3D and as we say in our Wrath of the Titans review, this film kind of rocks!

Mirror Mirror: Director Tarsem Singh brings his marvelous vision (Immortals, The Cell) to the live action world of Snow White. By casting Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins as the fairy tale maiden and Armie Hammer as Prince Charming, he scores right out of the gate. The film is definitely for families and Snow White aficionados and even closes with a massive Bollywood musical number. It fairs pretty well in taking a ten-page story and giving it 90 minutes of cinematic life, as we state in our Mirror Mirror review.

Limited release:

Goon: Seann William Scott gives the performance of his life as a bar bouncer who is given a shot at being a minor league hockey enforcer. The man on the ice who is charged with protecting all the other players is someone made with brutish force. Yet in the hands of Scott, the character also has a heart that will melt the Canadian snow that seems to be everywhere in this heartwarming comedy. Check out our Goon review for more.

Bully: A documentary that is a must-see for everyone. Bullying is a national epidemic and through this film, filmmakers hope to spread the word about the problem in an effort to stave off any more student on student violence that has resulted in numerous suicides.

Intruders: Clive Owen and his daughter are having haunting visions. Are they true? Are these two making it up? Check out the Intruders trailer and see what you think!

Fans of The Hunger Games continue to feed the frenzy as the film scored its second straight victory at the weekend box office. The Suzanne Collins page to screen effort added another $61.1 million in its second week of release. The flick broke all kinds of records last week with its $155 million debut. Even with three new films opening this weekend -- Wrath of the Titans, Mirror Mirror and Goon -- the story of Katniss and her adventures made almost twice as much as its nearest competitor.

Jennifer Lawrence: The Hunger Games
The sequel to 2010’s Clash of the Titans, Wrath of the Titans, and to settle for a second place finish with a respectable $34.2 million. Julia Roberts’ turn as the Evil Queen to Lily Collins’ Snow White scored third place for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror with a $19 million take.

The last film that wasn’t The Hunger Games to top the box office, 21 Jump Street, continued its solid performance with a fourth place finish, scoring $15 million. The Lorax also kept up solid numbers with its fifth place finish, adding another $8 million to its haul.

Total Recall Trailer: Colin Farrell Finds the Truth

Colin Farrell steps into the shoes, sort of, of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the update of Total Recall. The film is a little different, so technically not a remake, yet much of the story definitely… recalls… the early 1990’s film. The first trailer has arrived and we have say it really captures the spirit of the short story that the film is based on, We Can Remember it For You Wholesale.

The film lands in theaters August 3 and Farrell is joined the cast by Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho and Bill Nighy.

Jason Biggs & Alyson Hannigan Talk American Reunion Revelry

We first saw Jason Biggs’ Jim and Alyson Hannigan’s Michelle find each other in 1999’s American Pie. In American Reunion, the couple are married with a baby as they head back to their hometown for their high school reunion. Movie Fanatic caught up with the two stars recently to talk about the Pie legacy and what it was like to get the entire gang back together for what is a reunion on many levels.

Alyson Hannigan and Jason Biggs in American Reunion
Biggs for one believes that although in the American Reunion trailer it may seem otherwise, he believes Jim has grown up. “Jim and Michelle are married now, and they’ve got a kid and he means well. In his mind, he has grown up,” Biggs said.

“But, the problem is that he finds himself, much like in the first film and all of the American Pie films, in a situation where he’s, once again, sexually frustrated. When Jim is sexually frustrated, he ends up making some poor decisions. When he makes some poor decisions, we make a film. The truth is there are still sexual problems that arise for guys."

Hannigan was compelled to return to the franchise when she read a certain scene in the script that involves her character trying to spice up her sex life by playing the dominatrix. “She is feeling responsible for letting the spark fade a little, in their sexual life,” the actress said. “She’s been so focused on being a mom, so she sees this weekend as a way to reinvigorate their lives and remind themselves of where they started.”

“She made me her bitch,” Biggs added and laughed.

The actor also was drawn to the scene when he first read the script and felt it was the perfect melding of what the Weitz brothers established in the original film coupled with what new directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas) brought.

“The dominatrix scene was in the earlier draft and I was like, ‘Great! I think that will be really funny, but what’s the next step? There’s more to do here.’ When I read the script, I was like, ‘Did these guys write the first American Pie?’ I felt that they had done such justice to Adam Herz’s original screenplay and the character that he had originally created, and I think it comes across on screen. I feel like this movie is more like the first one than any of the other ones.”

Biggs clearly cherished how Hurwitz and Schlossberg's fandom for American Pie is felt on every frame of American Reunion. He also found that what was on the page would accurately reflect how these characters would be 13 years after the original debuted. “Now that you have these characters who are in their 30s, it’s tougher to credibly find these situations where you can push these boundaries and put them in these ridiculous scenarios that are believable, aren’t gratuitous, aren’t awkward and aren’t illegal, in some way. They’re older,” Biggs said. “Some of the things they did in the previous films would be not acceptable for a 30-year-old. So, they had to update it, if you will. That’s why the penis scene works, organically. Organ being the appropriate root word there.”

The scene he’s referring to is in some ways, a continuation of the famous pie-loving scene from the first film. In American Reunion, Biggs' Jim awakes in his childhood kitchen, naked from the waist down after a night of revelry with his high school buds. As Michelle and a friend walk into the kitchen and Jim awakes, he frantically avoids showing off the full Monty… and fails.

“The pie got to see it, so it was about time that we all get to see it,” Hannigan said and laughed. And we do see it… all of it.

“The penis has been a major player in the American Pie franchise. It has been its own character,” Biggs said.

“It’s the Rosebud,” Hannigan added, referring to the iconic item in Citizen Kane.

Biggs wasn’t shy about showing off his nether regions -- in fact, he felt it was appropriate given how sequels must push the envelope of their originals.

Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan in American Reunion
“I said to the directors, ‘What’s going to be the pie scene this time, guys?’ Some earlier drafts felt like it was missing that, so I gave them carte blanche. I was like, ‘I will literally do anything, as long as it makes sense, in the context of the film and for the character and as long as I think it’s funny,’” Biggs said. “Jon wrote me one day and said, ‘Would you be willing to show your penis?’ I said, ‘Yes, absolutely!’ I laughed out loud when they pitched me the idea. I was like, ‘That sounds great!’”

“That was my first day of shooting, by the way,” Hannigan recalled.

“Welcome back to the franchise, Alyson,” Biggs added. “Here’s my penis!”

Weta Digital Exclusive Interview: From Tintin to The Hobbit

Movie Fanatic was granted an exclusive interview with Matthias Menz of the famed New Zealand-based special effects company Weta Digital. The group came to wide fame with their astounding work on the Lord of the Rings movies and Avatar. They are a favorite of Peter Jackson, so it wasn’t surprising that they were enlisted to manage the special effects on The Adventures of Tintin (now out on home video) and of course, his upcoming Hobbit twin films: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

Steven Spielberg Directs The Adventures of Tintin
Menz answers our questions about the making of Tintin and working with stellar directors such as Jackson and Steven Spielberg.

Movie Fanatic: Were there any challenges that you faced that may have surprised you during the making of Tintin? How did you come together to overcome it?

Matthias Menz: For a multitude of reasons we were facing the completion of a large chunk of the film in a very limited time frame. Now we at Weta Digital are quality driven and we knew we wouldn't let go until it looks great, but time wise it looked like the impossible. It was quite amazing to see the whole team all pull on one string to get it done and not having to give up quality -- kudos to them. In fact we not only finished in time but ahead of schedule for nearly all of it. So we even had a chance to go back and refine some earlier work.

Movie Fanatic: You've worked with so many directors of such brilliance, what was it like to work with both Peter Jackson (Tintin producer) and Steven Spielberg (Tintin director)?

Matthias Menz: It’s been great. Working with Peter is always inspiring. Both have been wonderful to work for. We were working with Steven on a daily basis and he is amazing, such a gentleman, very open for ideas. He gets the best out of everyone. I had read about his enthusiasm, but witnessing it every day first hand has been uplifting. His passion for filmmaking is infectious.

Movie Fanatic: How does the process begin? When tackling something as big as Tintin with all of its vastness, is it difficult to figure out where to start?

Matthias Menz: Yes and no. It all starts with the script and its breakdown, and we had Herge's comics of course. So the world had been well illustrated. Weta has fairly well established workflows it has developed over the years, and it’s constantly evolving of course, never standing still. So in a broader sense we know how a film the scale of Tintin goes through our pipeline and all the different departments. But no film is alike so obviously it can be difficult if you are trying to do something that hasn't been done before and we hit this magical moment basically for every film we work on -- if only to do better than what we've done before. But this is clearly where our team approach at Weta comes in. There is so much talent and passion, Tintin has used and evolved out of the technology Weta developed for Avatar. It’s been refined and new technologies have been added for the special needs of this particular film. For example, we had to extend our lighting toolsets especially for all the indoor scenes in Tintin. For Avatar we substantially improved our outdoor lighting setup because much of that film takes place outside. Tintin demanded that level of innovation for our interior lighting setup. We also worked on the realism of shadows and light, this clearly adds to the visual richness of this world. We wanted to honor Herge's world and spirit but it also had to work as a film in three dimensions.

Movie Fanatic: What was the most enjoyable aspect for you in making Tintin?

Matthias Menz: Besides working for Steven, it was clearly the lighting design for our sequences. It is magical to be so close to the final look of a picture. In preparation for Tintin we looked into principles of classic cinematography, studied the work of the old grand painters like Rembrandt and Caravaggio, looked into the work of Januz Kaminski (Spielberg’s long term Director of Photography) and tried to honor classical cinematography as best we could for the lighting aspect of Tintin. Might sound strange, but I really enjoyed being critiqued by Steven or watching him comment on the work of others -- just to hear and learn what he's looking for and the reasons behind it. It’s like learning from the best; these were wonderful moments, trying to tune in with Steven's taste and expectations.

The Adventures of Tintin: New Still
Movie Fanatic: We have heard there is talk of a sequel... will you be back and do you already have ideas of what you would like it to look like?

Matthias Menz: I’m hoping to be back and looking forward to exploring this world more! The plan was always for Peter Jackson to direct the second film and we don’t know yet what he has in mind for it. We don’t really know anything at this point. It'll most likely continue to look and feel like live action cinematography. It will likely continue to break boundaries of what’s possible in this medium of digital filmmaking from both a storytelling look and technology standpoint.

Movie Fanatic: Congrats on the BAFTA nominations, where do the accolades from your peers lie in your world as far as importance?

Matthias Menz: We are always happy to be recognized for our work, whether that be from our peers or elsewhere. The BAFTAs are indeed a great honor. The Visual Effects Society (VES Awards) also recognizes our peers annually. The best visual effects work of the year comes together to be recognized. Tintin led the pack this year with six nominations.

Movie Fanatic: The Blu-Ray release of a film allows viewers to delve inside the making of a picture, is that a nice perk that has emerged from the home video revolution that more people can now know what it is you all do to make that magic?

Matthias Menz: It’s a wonderful thing! I personally watch every making-of I can get my hands on. It can be both inspiring and educational. The making of Tintin required many skilled and talented people in all the different areas of production. Such a film is not an easy thing to make, it’s carefully crafted and refined, and so it’s great to share our work and passion with everyone.

Gollum from Return of the King
Movie Fanatic: What's next on your plate?

Matthias Menz: Right now we are hard at work on The Hobbit. Looking forward to working on Gollum again!

With all of his fantastic film work, including Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and 28 Days Later, he’s gotten to know quite a few amazing actors over the years.
