The Avengers Photo: A Hulk Rises

A fantastic new photo of the Hulk has landed from The Avengers and after witnessing the Marvel-ous new movie, believe it or not, the big guy steals the show. This is the Hulk we’ve been waiting for, people! Movie Fanatic met with the cast of The Avengers yesterday -- stay tuned for more -- but the one thing that seems to have caught our ear more than any bit of information: Robert Downey Jr. asserts that Joss Whedon was set to film one more final scene last night. “We're actually not done shooting,” Downey said. “We're shooting another scene tonight. I'm not kidding."

Mark Ruffalo Stars as The Hulk in The Avengers
We wonder if he’s serious, after all… we’ve spoken to him four times in the past and it’s hard to tell when he’s being a jokester and when he means business. After making the statement, the Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo, added, “No… he’s serious.”

Stay tuned!

Lockout Movie Review: The Guy Pearce Show

0
0

First and foremost, Lockout could have been the most average of films, but with the stellar turn by its star Guy Pearce, it is a great joy.

Guy Pearce Stars in Lockout
In the film that takes place 70 years in the future, Pearce plays Snow, a former CIA agent who is -- rightly or wrongly -- charged with crimes against the state. He is ordered to serve a sentence on the new orbiting-the-Earth prison in space. Meanwhile, Maggie Grace matches Pearce’s performance note for note as the daughter of the president who finds herself at the prison on an informational mission. When a riot breaks out, she’s caught in the middle and the only person who can save her is Snow.

We were reminded of films such as Die Hard and its ilk in that Snow has quips that recall John McClane. Pearce delivers them with such flamboyance that we think we’ve found our new action star. Hollywood has been searching for its next action star as Bruce Willis gets a little long in the tooth and might we suggest Pearce be considered for the position. He is bulked up and explodes off the screen in every frame. His comic timing, coupled with his innate ability to carry out action scenes, had us begging for more when the credits rolled.

Not missing a beat either is the former Lost star. Grace’s president’s daughter is hardly a wallflower. Once Pearce and Grace get together, the sparks fly. It’s not that they don’t like each other, but more the fact that if they had not been thrown in the same powder keg of a situation, we doubt they would even share a glance.

Lockout is from the mind of Luc Besson (The Fifth Element). The producer also co-wrote the film and his handprints are all over it. There’s a pacing that is pure Besson, and Pearce fits it like a glove. Co-directors James Mather and Stephen St. Leger know Besson’s work so well that they too meld into his world perfectly and capture the pace and panache of the visionary’s method and style.

The film has serious holes, sure, but as is the case with most purely popcorn flicks, we can forgive it. Upon hindsight, there are aspects of the story we wish had been better laid out and the ending, although spectacular, does not quite work for us. That being said, the power of witnessing Pearce do his thing, exploring Besson’s world as imagined by Mather, and St. Leger and it all adds up to one of the great joyrides of the year… so far.

Channing Tatum told us in our Haywire interview about how Magic Mike came to be. The story of his humble male stripper beginnings caught the ear of director Steven Soderbergh. He encouraged Tatum to put pen to paper and the next thing you know, Warner Bros. is releasing two new stills from the drama-comedy that hits theaters June 29. "I'm like, 'Yeah, Steven Soderbergh, I'll go write that,'" Tatum recalled when the esteemed helmer told him to write his stripper story.

The first photo from the Soderbergh-directed flick features Tatum while he is joined by co-star Matthew McConaughey in the second.

Weekend Movie Preview: April 13, 2012

Will The Hunger Games make it four weeks in a row topping the box office or will one of the three new movies arriving this weekend knock it off? There’s a horror movie that may be the best in some time, The Three Stooges get updated and Guy Pearce establishes himself as an action star to be reckoned with in Lockout.

The Cabin in the Woods: Joss Whedon and Dan Gordon have combined forces to create a masterwork. The horror film that is so much more stars Chris Hemsworth as the leader of a group of friends who head out for a weekend at the titular cabin. To say things are not what they seem is not only an understatement, but makes the cinematic complexity of this film too simplified. Be sure to check out our raving The Cabin in the Woods review.

The Three Stooges: The idea of having a new set of Stooges for a whole new generation may be bothersome to many fans of the comic trio. Yet with the Farrelly brothers handling the directing and three actors led by Sean Hayes who utterly nail the larger-than-life characters that they were -- and as we say in our The Three Stooges review -- fans may be surprised.

Lockout: Pearce and Maggie Grace star in a futuristic thriller that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are laughs aplenty, but through and through, this film is a chance for Pearce to shine. He commands the audience’s attention in every frame of the movie. Toss in the fact that it is from the mind of Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element) and what is produced is a popcorn movie to usher in the popcorn movie season that is summer. Don't miss our Lockout review for more.

Peter Farrelly and his brother Bobby have built quite a career out of making us laugh. Peter took a moment recently for an exclusive video interview to talk about the brothers’ latest film foray, The Three Stooges. After years in the business making films such as There’s Something About Mary, Me, Myself and Irene and Hall Pass, the filmmakers were set to shine their light on their childhood heroes: The Stooges. Peter lets us in on what it took to get Larry David to don a nun’s outfit, what it was about his three leads that made them Larry, Curly and Moe for 2012 and the secret to the fraternal filmmaking pair that has kept them so relevant for so long.

The Hunger Games Wins Fourth Straight Box Office

The Hunger Games made it an even month of being on top at the nation’s weekend box office. The Jennifer Lawrence-starring film banked another $21.5 million, easily topping the second place finisher, The Three Stooges. The Farrelly brothers' film debuted with a respectable $17.1 million.

Hunger Games: Jennifer Lawrence
The Suzanne Collins page-to-screen effort now stands at $337.1 million and achieved a four-peat, the first time a film has done that since James Cameron and Avatar ruled the movie-going public.

The Joss Whedon-penned The Cabin in the Woods, despite critical praise, had to settle for third place with its $14.9 million bow. Speaking of Cameron, his Titanic 3D took the fourth place spot, adding another $11.6 million to its return-to-the-big-screen bank.

Fifth place belonged to the horny guys and girls from American Pie, who saw their American Reunion bank another $10.6 million in its second week of release.

Box Office Top 10:

1. The Hunger Games, $21.5 million

Iron Man 3 Starts Filming in Five Weeks

0
0

Robert Downey Jr. and his alter ego Iron Man will only have a few weeks to bask in the glow of The Avengers' premiere May 4 before heading into production on Iron Man 3. Marvel studio head Kevin Feige has announced that the third film in the Iron Man series will begin shooting in five weeks and the production has struck a deal with China to film part of the flick in that country, a move that will also allow the film to be released in the country that is notoriously difficult for Hollywood studios to show their wares.

He's Iron Man
DMG Entertainment, a Chinese company, has agreed to co-produce the film which means several things. First, it gives the production more money to send the production value through the roof. It also means that Iron Man 3 (with Ben Kingsley as its villain?) can guarantee its spot amongst the 25 Hollywood movies that the government of that country allows to be shown in its country. Marvel has scored with the deal by breaking into a country with a huge audience, but little access for big budget American pictures.

What this also means is that it is very likely that Iron Man 3 will be a 3D movie. Since The Avengers is, that might seem like a given. Yet, it was not a sure thing until this deal with DMG Entertainment was struck. Chinese audiences adore the 3D format. Because of that fact, consider Iron Man 3 in 3D an absolute certainty.

The Lucky One is Nicholas Sparks: An Author Interview

0
0

Writer Nicholas Sparks had to leave his native North Carolina to tell the page-to-screen story for The Lucky One. Given the storyline, moving the romantic action to Louisiana was a sacrifice the bestselling author was more than willing to make.

Nicholas Sparks Pic
“For me it was fine. In the end you really want to make the best film that you can, and in the reality of the filmmaking world you have things like budgets. If you film here you can do other things that you might think are beneficial to the story. It’s the same kind of life though. Really that was the spirit and intent of the story, and I thought that was captured,” Sparks told Movie Fanatic.

“That’s one of the things that I think make these stories work very well, is that they can be anywhere. It could be in North Carolina, but it could be in Northern California, it could be in Iowa. This really could've happened anywhere so to speak, and that's what you're trying to do, is to create a world where everyone can feel as if it could’ve happened to them.”

Screenwriter Will Fetters went on and on in our interview (premiering later this week) about the blessing of collaborating with Sparks coupled with the brilliance of working with an author of Sparks' talents. The author found a brotherhood of brilliance with Fetters.

“There's an awareness of the differences between a novel and a script. A novel might be a hundred thousand words; a screenplay is twenty thousand words. Eighty percent is gone off the map. That’s the first thing you have to realize. Whenever I work on a film I have three rules, only three. I tell them to every screenwriter. I say, ‘Let's retain the spirit and the intent of the overall story.’ If you look at The Lucky One, what was the intent? It's a journey. It's a healing journey for both of them that they undertake. This is what it’s really about. What's the spirit of the story? It should feel real. These should be characters that you feel like you can know. They should have honesty and integrity,” Sparks said.

“You did that in the story and in the character, so you say, ‘Spirit in the intent of the story, spirit in the intent of the character, and then make the best film that you possibly can.' Screenwriters love to hear this. They're like, ‘Oh that's great, so I can perhaps combine this character. I can take A Walk to Remember, which he did, which was a novel based in 1954, and I can make it contemporary.’ Why? Because it hits rule number three: the best film that we possibly can, so it will be more relatable to the kids these days.”

Proof of the partnering that makes everything better is lines such as “Finding your picture is like finding an angel."

“I didn't write that line,” Sparks admitted and laughed. “But you know when it works. That is not from the book. That was the brilliant screenwriter. You know when things work. Sometimes it takes a while to get there. Often when I'm writing a passage it's more about the exact mood that I'm trying to create. You'll put something down and you'll say, ‘That's not exactly right,’ so there's a lot of tweaking. Sometimes you're not even sure what kind of mood you're trying to make. It's like, what did that mean? Was there a sense of melancholy? What was the desperation? There was a search for meaning in the way he said it in this particular line. It might take you a little bit -- ‘Gosh, was it melancholy or desperation? No, no, no, it’s a search for meaning,’ and then you try to find the exact right words to use. Then you rely on the director and the actor to pull it off. So to me it's always more about the meaning than the specific word.”

The man who featured Ryan Gosling in his career-making role in The Notebook was keenly aware of what has transpired onscreen with The Lucky One and Zac Efron. It is a role-meets-actor match made in heaven. “I had no image in mind as I wrote the novel. You really wanted to have someone though that felt very real to me, that felt very honest. That's the most important criteria. I live in Eastern North Carolina, so we're literally surrounded by bases. I've got Camp Lejeune, which is the East Coast version of Camp Pendleton and it's thirty minutes to the south. I've got Cherry Point, which is the East Coast version of El Toro, it's fifteen minutes to the east. I have Fort Bragg, which is home of the 82nd Airborne, the biggest base in the world. That's about an hour to the west. Then I've got the 4th Fighter Wing. I am surrounded. Everyone talks about base closes. I'm like, ‘When?’ They haven't closed the base in North Carolina ever. They've only expanded them. It is ubiquitous to that area. These people are my neighbors in my town. They go to the church. They go to the school I founded, so you see them. I used to coach at the local public high school. I coached track and field. Five of my former athletes are in the military, and then they come back. They're kids. These kids are twenty. They're twenty-one. They're eighteen. Zac was twenty-four, so to me Zac looked exactly like these kids. So there was a tremendous amount of believability to who he actually was,” Sparks said.

Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling in The Lucky One
“That’s what they look like. They look like young men. They don't look thirty-eight or thirty-nine. It's not that kind of war these days. These are kids who join right out of high school. That's the simple fact. Most of them are nineteen, so you wanted someone believable about that. The great thing about working with Zac was he brought so much passion and enthusiasm to making his character as believable as possible. Part of that is because a lot of Zac's friends are in the military. The ones he went to high school with, they're in the military too. He's like, ‘They're all my age essentially.’ Yet he was not in the military, and the work he put in it was not easy. He was getting up at three. He grew up in this role. He's a young man in this role. I couldn't have been happier. To me he looks exactly like this, and his performance was incredible.”

Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows has gotten its rating from the MPAA and the film starring Johnny Depp has landed a PG-13. Meanwhile, five new photos of Depp as Barnabas Collins have arrived in Movie Fanatic’s inbox. The film takes place in the 1970s and from the looks of things, art directors have scored. One of the following photos features Depp talking to Chloe Moretz’s Carolyn Stoddard in her room that is covered in posters of rock stars from the era. You’ll also note the photo below of Depp alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, who plays Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. To say we’re excited for the film’s May 11 debut is a gross understatement.

Star Trek 2: Zachary Quinto Set Photo!

Since initial photos arrived from Star Trek 2, the J.J. Abrams set has been pretty quiet as the director closed off his set. That all changed today as we got our hands on a photo of Spock himself, Zachary Quinto, in action doing some sort of high wire act.

Zachary Quinto on the Set of Star Trek 2
What we know about this photo is that it sounds like quite an action-packed, thrilling scene. Spock is being lowered into a volcano -- thus the Iron Man-looking fire suit. Notice the box he’s holding bears a unique logo: The Starfleet Emblem.

A source on the set that released the photo describes it as such:

“Zachary Quinto, as Spock, filming an action scene for the Untitled Star Trek 2 Sequel. After first rehearsing the scene with a Spock stunt double actor, Quinto was then rigged to a wire in front of a large green screen and lifted to a height of 10 stories high then dropped at a high rate of speed as if he was falling. In the scene Spock is wearing a 'Volcano Suit' and carrying an unknown piece of equipment with the Starfleet Emblem," the source said. "A volcano is somehow involved in this scene. The crew had a real fire burning off camera to catch the fire reflections on [Spock]'s 'Volcano Suit.'"

Star Trek 2 hits theaters May 17, 2013 and brings back the entire cast from the first film including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Peter Weller and John Cho. Joining the franchise is new baddie Benedict Cumberbatch.

In our ongoing effort to bring you something The Avengers every day until the film’s May 4 premiere, today we present a fantastic and riveting clip. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has got Loki (Tom Hiddleston) all locked up, exactly where he wants him. The spot features two actors going at it in what could be classified as an acting master class. Funny thing, given that this is a Marvel superhero movie!

The latest clip shows how impeccable Kenneth Branagh was with his casting of Loki in Thor. The British actor is astounding in the role and you do not want to miss our exclusive interview with him premiering May 30.

Can you guess who in The Avengers looks at Loki with his horned helmet and calls him “Reindeer Games?” It shouldn’t be too hard, given the fact that this character is the group’s resident jokester.

Disney has released its first teaser poster for their upcoming animated flick that celebrates those vintage 8-bit video games, Wreck-It Ralph. The film features the vocal talents of Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch (don’t miss our exclusive video interview with her) and John C. Reilly as the title character.

Wreck-It Ralph Poster

Look for some smart humor when the film lands November 2 as it tackles the universe of classic arcade games and goes inside their world to explore the emotion and day-to-day lives of our favorite games from back in the day.

The guy in the poster above is Wreck-It Ralph. He is a video game villain who feels he is completely misunderstood. Ralph busts out of his game and leaps into other games to prove that he can be more hero than recipient for the hero’s punches.

The Three Stooges are back and judging by its second place finish behind the monolith that is The Hunger Games, audiences were thrilled. Larry, Curly and Moe are brought into the 21st century by filmmakers the Farrelly brothers and as they did back in the day, the comic trio gives us plenty of hysterical and quotable lines.

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol: Jeremy Renner on Surviving

0
0

To mark the arrival of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol on Blu-Ray and DVD, Movie Fanatic brings you a conversation with one of the film’s stars. Jeremy Renner was new to the Tom Cruise franchise, and seamlessly fit into the action, thrills and spills. After all the incredible stunts featured in the fourth Mission Impossible film, Renner for one was thrilled to still be well… amongst the living. “It's good to be alive,” Renner said. “There are some amazing set pieces, my friend.”

Jeremy Renner, Tom Cruise and Paula Patton in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol
That is saying something as the action sequences, particularly atop the tallest building in the world, are breathtaking. “The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. It's twice the size of the Empire State building in New York. We were on the top of it and it is so high that when you look down it is like the view from a plane. It's intense,” Renner recalled. “All the stunts are practical and that made that a lot of fun. There's a lot of challenges to overcome, but luckily we had a man like Tom to lead the way.”

Cruise, as he often does, insisted on doing his own stunts -- therefore audiences get that incredible sequence in Dubai. Although he appears quite serious during those scenes, Renner tells us that Cruise was having the time of his life. “He was smiling ear to ear between takes,” the actor said.

Meanwhile, inside the room from which Cruise was propelling to and from, Renner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton were content to admire the view. “We just had to sit inside and sip on some tea,” Renner said and laughed. Cruise’s co-stars knew that the franchise’s star was more than equipped for the dangerous stunt. “He has a lot of mountain climbing experience and one of the stunt guys behind him was one of the top mountain climbers, so being on a wire, he was as comfortable as hanging on a rock. That's strange enough in itself. But hanging off a building like that? Maybe it's not new to him. Maybe it is, but he certainly was enjoying himself [laughs].”

Renner portrays Will Brandt, the chief analyst for the secretary (Tom Wilkinson) who is the head of the IMF. After a bombing of the Kremlin, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his team are accused of plotting the explosion and the gang most go off the grid. “We become rogue agents essentially and hence 'ghost protocol.' We are thrust together to overcome great obstacles and within that dynamic of the four agents you realize that not everybody is who they say they are or who they appear to be,” Renner said. “It's a spy franchise and you never know with spies -- if they are good, bad or where their allegiances lie. That's the case in this movie.”

Renner is having quite a run, one that began with his Oscar-nominated turn in The Hurt Locker. He soon will be seen as Hawkeye in The Avengers May 4 and taking over the Bourne franchise from Matt Damon in Bourne Legacy, due in August. “It's amazing. There have been a lot of wonderful opportunities I have seemingly stumbled across with Mission being the first big monster out of the gate. I enjoyed the heck out of that and ever since then it has been more action movies after that. Who knows what the future holds?” Renner said. “The Hurt Locker definitely changed everything for me. I'm getting opportunities now that are just amazing -- roles that I could only dream about and big, huge films like Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”

The Lone Ranger Photos: Johnny Depp Embraces Navajo Nation

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer are busy in New Mexico filming their Disney film The Lone Ranger. With Hammer as the title character and Depp as his faithful sidekick Tonto, they had us at go. Toss in Depp’s determination to bring dignity to the Native American character that he felt was lost in the original, and we believe they are on to something truly special. The actor has said he hopes to “take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans, not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout the history of cinema, and turn it on its head.”

Johnny Depp Meets Navajo Leaders
Taking that sentiment to the next level, we have some photos of a recent meeting between Depp, Hammer and members of the Navajo nation who have given full blessing of the production to film on their land. Look for magic when the film premieres May 31, 2013.
