Winning the box office title from the reigning champ The Hunger Games was quite a feat for Think Like a Man. The film, based on the book by Steve Harvey, is filled with heart and hilarity, and that balance is what sent audiences to the theaters to see it in droves. The film also gave us some great quotes, led by the always funny Kevin Hart as Cedric.

DVD Previews: Mark Wahlberg Moves Contraband

0
0

The week in home video is highlighted by finding Mark Wahlberg back in action in Contraband, while The Innkeepers battle back ghosts, Camelot gets a birthday Blu-Ray release, Halle Berry hits the water and an urban drama astounds.

Contraband: In Contraband, Wahlberg plays one of the best smugglers that has ever worked. He is living the retired crook life now, with his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and kids in the suburbs. When his brother-in-law loses money for a whacked-out drug dealer (Giovanni Ribisi), Wahlberg must swing back into action to save his family.

The Innkeepers: A little seen, but well reviewed horror film that takes the haunted house premise and turns it on its head. Cleverly crafted, the movie rivets with subtle surprises. This is the type of film that can be celebrated on home video. Put it on your “don’t-miss” list.

Camelot: In honor of the forty-fifth anniversary of the big screen debut of the classic musical Camelot, Warner Bros. has released the film for the first time on Blu-Ray. You think you know the Arthurian legend… think again.

Enjoy a clip from the film entitled: The Lusty Month of May.

Dark Tide: Halle Berry had one thing going for her with Dark Tide, she met her fiance Olivier Martinez during the shoot. That is about the only other reason to witness this film that tries what Contraband achieves.

Pariah: A star is born with the performance of Adepero Oduye as a sexually confused girl growing up in a community that doesn’t necessarily embrace homosexuality. It is a stirring portrait of one family and the ebbs and flows of life.

11:11:11: The horror film from the director of Saw II, III and IV had a timely debut in cinemas on the titular date and rightfully so as the thrills from the flick arise from the mysterious number. After the death of his wife and child, famed American author Joseph Crone travels to Barcelona to meet his estranged brother and his dying father. Things start getting a little weird and every time Joseph has one of these experiences, the number 11 is nearby.

The Hobbit: Peter Jackson Shows Us 10 Minutes!

Movie Fanatic was just treated to the type of moment that made us, well… fanatical about movies. We’re in Las Vegas at the annual CinemaCon and it is hard to say what the highlight of the Warner Bros. presentation was, what with The Dark Knight Rises, Campaign and Rock of Ages getting their spotlight. But, there was a chill-inducing moment. Honestly, ten minutes worth as we witnessed 600 seconds of Peter Jackson’s work in progress that is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Martin Freeman in The Hobbit
Jackson addressed the crowd and spoke of why he filmed his return to Middle Earth in the revolutionary 48-frames-per-second mode. He promised images that were as crisp and vibrant as have ever been seen. And in 3D, all the more so on the mind-blowing scale.

Then, the clip started. Emotions swelled, that is for sure as the first images follow a camera traversing the snowy mountain tops of Middle Earth and immediately the difference in the picture was evident. The new shooting style may have been a highlight for this Movie Fanatic, but bliss would have arose solely from the pure joy of witnessing 10 minutes of our most anticipated film of 2012.

The Hobbit footage gave us full scenes with Sir Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett as well as a fantastic moment between Bilbo Baggins and the being that would become Gollum. Also on hand were scenes with Orlando Bloom’s Legolas and Elijah Wood’s Frodo. To say we were in Hobbit heaven is too tame of a description. It was rapturous.

Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer: Roll Call

The latest trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman says so much without saying anything at all. Audiences are introduced to Snow White (Kristen Stewart), the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), the dwarfs, Prince William (aka Charming, played by Sam Claflin) and the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron).

We adore the simplicity of this spot. To “introduce” characters that many know from the legendary fairy tale may seem a waste of ad time. But, since this is a version of the fable not before seen, it’s kind of nice to witness director Rupert Sanders’ vision for his take on iconic characters.

This is not your grandmother’s Snow White and you will surely see that when the film premieres June 1.

Jerry Bruckheimer Exclusive Interview: Living Lone Ranger

Jerry Bruckheimer may never have worked as hard before starting a production as he has for The Lone Ranger. After getting green lit, then put on hold… and then green lit again, we are thrilled to be talking with the screen legend at CinemaCon in Las Vegas about his upcoming film that brings the famous TV show to 21st century audiences.

Jerry Bruckheimer Pic
The Pirates of the Caribbean series producer (and dozens of other blockbusters) and this reporter share a bit of being born in Detroit bonding as he tells me exclusively that that was one of the things that most inspired him about The Lone Ranger as a boy -- the story rose out of Motown.

“It started in Detroit in 1933, that’s a great beginning,” Bruckheimer said and smiled. He then gets serious and talks about the themes that made the figure a stalwart in American culture. “It’s all about justice and we all love to have justice in our world around us.”

As we reported, the production welcomed the Navajo Nation to the New Mexico set. They were not the only tribe to visit. It was considered extremely important by Depp that his characterization of Tonto be as much of a tribute and less about a characterture. Bruckheimer believes that only enhances the tale he’s currently filming with Gore Verbinski directing.

"We’ve been working with the Navajos and the Comanches and a few others,” he proudly stated. “We want to make sure we get it right and make it as authentic as we can in the movie.”

Casting rumors for the project surrounding the mystery of who would be The Lone Ranger after Depp signed on to portray his steady sidekick Tonto. Upon meeting Hammer, Bruckheimer was sold. “Armie’s such a gentleman,” he said. “He’s so fun to be with.”

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in The Lone Ranger
The uber-producer reported that his co-stars are gelling famously. “Johnny’s such a generous actor,” he added. They’re getting along great. And they are so fantastic together.”

The Dark Knight Rises: What We Saw

0
0

The beyond excitement that was generated after witnessing 10 minutes of The Hobbit footage during yesterday’s Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon was equaled when Christopher Nolan took the stage to introduce a sizzle reel from his The Dark Knight Rises. There was a virtual Bane’s army full of new visuals in it and we proudly bring you a rundown of what we saw.

Christian Bale and Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises
“What defines cinema and gets people out of the home to watch it, is spectacle. What we wanted to do with this story was finish it in the biggest way possible. These are characters we know and care about and we hope this will be a thrilling and satisfying conclusion," Nolan said before dimming the lights and taking our breath away.

The footage starts with Bane getting freed from his airplane lockdown in the most devious of ways. It is spectacular. What struck us next was our first look at Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne. He looks a bit haggard. Is he injured? Is he getting old? (The story takes place eight years after The Dark Knight.) Michael Caine’s Alfred assures our off-his-game hero that he will be back. “Don’t worry, Master Wayne. It takes a little time to get back in the swing of things,” Alfred says.

Then we meet Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle. She is in a maid uniform and appears to be “working” at Wayne Manor. But, is she? She walks away from the building and tears off her white maid uniform neck frills to reveal a black dress.

Thus far, there is not a lot of character interaction in terms of dialogue. But, what Nolan has provided us is even better. He lets our imaginations soar with the images while his film’s sizzling score builds and builds as the video continues.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his first appearance in the footage and his Gotham beat cop appears to be seriously integral to the plot. He is deeply involved in fighting the oncoming onslaught of Bane.

That was the other thing that struck Movie Fanatic from the footage. It seems that Bane has inspired, perhaps launched, an all-out revolution on the streets of Gotham. As we’ve seen in The Dark Knight Rises trailer, he all but destroys a football stadium… and that is just the beginning, Batman fans!

And lastly, we must say that all the prior talk about not being able to understand Tom Hardy as Bane was proven to be nonsense. His characterization is flawless as the evildoer, and more importantly, in the evil department… he is rivaling a certain actor who went on to win an Oscar for playing The Joker.

Oh, and we would be remiss not to mention one of Batman's new toys that is utterly brilliant. We got our first look at The Bat, the flying wonder machine that plays an integral part of the plot.

In the end, Nolan's sizzle reel was in fact more of a heat-seeking missile of awesomeness. When the film's next trailer premieres before The Avengers, prepare to be swept away!

We’ve got our first-look photo at the boy stranded in a boat with a tiger story that is Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. The Yann Martel bestseller has enthralled millions, but seems a difficult leap to the big screen because of its wildly original set pieces. In the hands of Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Sense and Sensibility), we believe Martel’s vision will be brought to life with magic and more.

The Five-Year Engagement: Jason Segel & Emily Blunt on Finding the Funny

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt bring the romantic hijinks to life in The Five-Year Engagement. The pair is talking to Movie Fanatic about the new romantic (and raunchy) comedy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall co-writers Nicholas Stoller and Segel.

Emily Blunt and Jason Segel Star in The Five Year Engagement
In the Judd Apatow-produced film, the pair plays an engaged couple who find life's speed bumps keep getting in the way of their nuptials. Just as they believe they are set on a date, Blunt’s character is accepted to grad school halfway across the country in Michigan from their San Francisco home. Segel and Blunt talk about the actor's penchant for culling laughs from nudity and the chemistry between the two that Segel knew would be there as he wrote the part specifically for the English actress.

Movie Fanatic: Emily, how did you manage to portray your Violet as someone we’re pulling for, even though her success brings Jason’s character sacrifice with little professional reward?

Emily Blunt: I have to credit Jason and Nick, because I think it’s a very fine line to tread. You want to understand everyone's predicament. You can see that Violet isn't fulfilled at the very beginning of the movie, and then she finds her place in the world when she moves to Michigan and she has this fantastic job. Yet, she can see that it's making her other half suffer, and even though she wants to embolden him and help him and be there for him, he shouldn't martyr himself either. It becomes quite complex as to how she feels in the moment. I think that is a credit to Nick and Jason -- how they wrote that. You don't necessarily side with anyone. You understand people's position. I think it's no bad thing that Violet's a tenacious girl. I think it's no bad thing that Violet is following her dreams. I don't think she's heartlessly doing so. I think she definitely gets swept up in it for sure, and she's hoping that Tom will be able to survive in this environment as he's promised her he would be able to, so it's complex.

Jason Segel: The only reason you question if it's heartless or if it’s selfish is because it’s a woman.

Emily Blunt: Yeah.

Jason Segel: Honest to God. That same plot, if it’s the man that's moving, everyone would be like, "Well, of course. It's his job. You've got to go support him." I try to write every part as though I'm going to play it, including the female parts. I don’t think of how would a girl speak or talk. People are all the same. I really do think that. People are all the same. It's going to be a female by the fact that she is biologically a female.

Movie Fanatic: Is it difficult, Jason, now that you’ve written and filmed two romantic comedies that are anything but traditional, to create something so original in a sea of repeated storylines?

Jason Segel: Yeah, it was a challenge to write, and was certainly a challenge to edit, because there are no big plot movements. There's no car accident. there's no big earthquake where someone dies or something. There's also no big contrivance, like "I'm a scientist and she hates science." It's a very earnest exploration about how a relationship is fluid, and when you choose a partner and you say, "I want to marry you," you're not saying it for this moment, you're saying it for your whole life and what's going to be ever-shifting power dynamics. It really is an honest exploration of relationships, and yeah, it was tricky to write, but the best ones are that. Annie Hall is that, and When Harry Met Sally is that.

Emily Blunt: I do think with a much simpler premise as well, there's just so much more room to play amongst that. As actors, there's a lot you can do to really make these relationships complex and interesting, messy, flawed and loving. It’s a movie with great heart. The situations these two are put in are ludicrous and outrageous and obviously heightened for the spectacle of the movie, but yet you invest in them as a couple in a very real way.

G.I. Joe Retaliation Exclusive Interview: Filmmakers & The Rock Rivet

0
0

As soon as Movie Fanatic landed in Las Vegas, we were swept over to the Rave Cinemas for a sizzle real and preview of the G.I. Joe Retaliation trailer that we premiered earlier this week. The footage was impressive as producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, Red) and director John Chu have outdone themselves with taking a lauded franchise in an entirely different direction. The casting coup was nabbing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock to lead the Joes on their next mission. As Chu called Johnson “franchise Viagra” after his work on Journey 2 and Fast Five, the helmer is hoping for the same influx of energy for his G.I. Joe.

Dwayne Johnson is Roadblock in GI Joe Retaliation
We caught up exclusively with di Bonaventura, Chu and Johnson here and got inside the recharge in the lifeblood of a franchise born decades ago that salutes our country’s soldiers and their sacrifice. Director Chu, after helming Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never, was brought to the attention of producer Di Bonaventura by Paramount and was thrilled to meet with the helmer. “What he did with that Bieber movie, which could have been anything, which I thought turned into a really good movie. It was really shocking,” di Bonaventura said.

They also had a director in Chu who had been all about G.I. Joe since a child. “Paramount said that this guy knows the franchise inside and out.”

Johnson said his director’s desire to bring the best Joe possible was palpable. “We have a hell of a director who is so passionate about the title, the franchise, the comics, the cartoons… everything,” the actor added.

Di Bonaventura too shared a joy for everything Joe, as his father represented the real life heroes. “My dad was a G.I. He was a paratrooper in World War II and I grew up with that,” he said and smiled. “I’ve had the opportunity to make movies with the military -- this is not a military movie -- but it has the connotation because of it. What that stands for is an unbelievable faith in decency and willingness to sacrifice and a desire to protect the innocent, they are really great values."

The producer had managed to put two action heroes – Johnson and Willis -- in the same movie -- something no one has ever been able to do before. “It was fun. It just happened. I wish we could say we were so smart that we organized it. We didn’t,” di Bonaventura said.

“As began to cast the movie, you have this character named Roadblock. You go, “Who could play Roadblock?” It’s kind of like, “Duh.” Fortunately Dwayne was available. I had worked with Bruce on Red so I just called him up. We’re interested in your playing a guy named Joe Colton, who’s the original G.I. Joe. He said, “I played with G.I. Joes!” He immediately got it. For him, it was an opportunity to relive his own childhood.”

Joining Willis in that virtual sandbox was Chu. The gig not only is a huge jump career-wise for the director, but also in some ways a means to meet a destiny forged in childhood. “The personality of all the Joes, is always been a part of my personality. Snake Eyes was one part. I would draw him on my books at school all the time. Roadblock with his rhyming and his cooking -- they all had human characteristics that I adored. The bad guys were always kick ass too. We tried to bring all of those aspects to the movie.”

Not one to let all the testosterone get all the spotlight, it is clear Chu is taken with the talents of Adrianne Palecki in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. “I loved her work on Friday Night Lights. She’s stunning. I didn’t know how she would be with the guns when she first met with us. She came in and grabbed the guns like she was born with them in her hands,” Chu said. “She holds her own with Bruce!”

Bruce Willis and Adrianne Palicki in GI Joe Retaliation
Despite the explosive brawn of the film, Johnson wants fans of G.I. Joe to know everything that was done with G.I. Joe: Retaliation was done with love.

“We pay true homage and respect to the mythology of G.I. Joe. We went to great lengths to make sure that they were happy. From the military fatigues to the design the costumes and making sure we pay honor to it,” Johnson said. “When you have that foundation of paying homage to the mythology, then you can branch off and grow from that. The foundation has to be solid.”

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Hires Screenwriters, Sets Release Date

Although a first draft of the script for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was written by James Vanderbilt, Sony has hired Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) to rewrite it. The studio has also said that the film will go into production in 2013 for a release date of May 2, 2014. Our first Marc Webb-directed foray into the webbed wonder's world, The Amazing Spider-Man, arrives July 3.

The Amazing Spider-Man Logo
"We grew up as huge Spider-Man fans," Kurtzman and Orci said in a statement. "To us, the opportunity to work on this film is akin to being handed the Holy Grail. We love the direction Sony and the filmmakers are taking the Peter Parker/Spider-Man mythology and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this legendary franchise."

Safe Movie Review: Jason Statham Sizzles

0
0

Safe is truly for Jason Statham fans. Those who appreciate the action star’s work will relish the candied violence throughout the film’s 95 minutes.

Jason Stathm and Catherine Chan in Safe
Statham stars as Luke Wright, a former cop who went underground after ratting out some detectives. We meet him fighting in a cage match in New Jersey and it is established his life is not where he would have liked it to be. He is happily married, and that is all.

Meanwhile, director Boaz Yakin introduces us to Catherine Chan’s Mei. She is a genius with numbers, a talent that gets her sent from her small village to a prestigious Beijing school. Before she can ever get there, she’s kidnapped by the Chinese mafia and put to work memorizing their books so there is no paper trail.

Mei and Wright’s fate are set to meet when she makes a trip with her “adoptive father” Mafioso to New York. She sees a chance to escape… and does. Only, she is followed by not only the Chinese organized crime syndicate, but also the Russia Mafia who want what’s inside her head. Oh yeah, and the NYPD wouldn’t mind speaking with her either.

When the baddies make their move on Mei in a crowded Manhattan subway, Statham happens to be on the scene and swings into action and saves the day… for now.

Yakin knows his element when it comes to the story and its star. There is no reason to sugar coat this actioner from what it is and all it tries to be. At times the dialogue is a little painful, but with the heart that is exhibited through the paternal relationship Statham strikes with Chan, we forgive it.

The director also knows how to step aside and let Statham do his thing. One particular stunt produced a roar from our screening crowd as it was something we’d never seen before. And it wasn’t!

For fans of the UK actor, Safe could easily be a five-out-of-five film. For the rest of the movie-going world, the film is much less than perfection. But for good popcorn fun, with the budding action superstar wielding his talents with priceless effort, it adds up to a pretty good time.

Skyfall Trailer Shown at CinemaCon: What Happened?

0
0

We’ve been treated all week here in Las Vegas at CinemaCon with looks at The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises and more. Today’s thrill factor went through the roof as Movie Fanatic witnessed the world premiere of the trailer for Skyfall. We have no idea when it will be available for us to bring it to you (we’re thinking it will first appear before Men in Black 3 in May), but it is our duty to tell you what we saw.

Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall
The trailer begins with Daniel Craig looking his badass Bond-est best. He is being interrogated utilizing some sort of word association game while Ralph Fiennes looks on behind a one-way mirror.

The questioner says, “Country.” Bond responds, “England.” That is followed by the word “gun” being uttered. Bond’s response? “Shot.” The next word is “agent.” Craig responds in deliberate monotone, “provocateur.” The session continues with “murder” to which our super agent responds, “employment.” Then… the word Skyfall is uttered. Bond quickly gets up, shouts “done” and leaves the room.

And we’re off…

Action permeates Bond films and Skyfall appears to be no different. Excitement permeated with the images of Bond running, standing over a bevy of caskets adorned with the Union Jack, a mysterious shot of a silhouette (we think it’s Javier Bardem’s villain), helicopters flying over London, night shots of Shanghai, explosions, music swelling…and then a close-up on Craig.

“Someone is coming to kill us. We’re going to kill them first.”

What struck us the most about the over two-minute teaser was how crisp the cinematography appeared. Director Sam Mendes is new to the action genre, but his adoration for everything Bond growing up in the U.K. is present on every frame.

Wreck-It Ralph Exclusive Interview: John C. Reilly Gets Animated

0

Wreck-It Ralph himself, John C. Reilly, is visiting with Movie Fanatic in Las Vegas for CinemaCon exclusively to talk about his new Disney animated film. The story follows Wreck-It Ralph, an 8-bit video game villain, who after three decades terrorizing the game’s hero wants something more. Reilly can relate.

Wreck-It Ralph Poster
“It’s funny. I’m getting up there in age. I’m not a kid anymore, what struck me is this search for meaning in your life. After doing a job, I often reflect. I’ve made 60 movies now. This thing that happens to my character in the movie is deep,” Reilly said. “He’s a video game character, a bad guy. He’s an outcast, He starts to fell like, ‘Is this all there is to life? Can I win a prize one time?’ He sets off on this journey where he tries to find himself and become a more heroic version of himself. He’s shocked.”

The actor found inspiration for the character’s journey from the most unlikely of sources. “Joe Girardi, the manager of the Yankees once said, ‘There’s two kinds of people in the world -- those who have been humbled and those who are about to be humbled.’ Ralph is both of those by the end of the movie,” Reilly said.

He didn’t find too much of a difference making an animated film versus the live action variety. Most live action films require ADR where the actor returns to record lines not picked up on set.

“Acting is this process of stepping across into the looking glass and imagining yourself as another character. I’ve done a lot of this in a way when I do ADR for films,” Reilly said. “You’re projecting everything you would normally use your whole body for through your voice. Using it on Wreck-It Ralph has been a really fun, creative and collaborative process.”
