The Words Trailer: Bradley Cooper as a Paperback Pirate

$

0

Bradley Cooper needs to learn that authors struggle with ideas sometimes, and you can't turn to miracle drugs (as he did in Limitless) or theft, as a means to save your writing career. Just drink eight cups of coffee, close the curtains and have at it, Coop.

Cooper stars as his second down-on-his-luck author in as many years in The Words, a new thriller from writer/director Brian Klugman. Watch the first trailer below:

Jeremy Irons and Zoe Saldana (Star Trek 2) also star in the film. Cooper, of course, is most well known as part of the Hangover cast, but as this trailer proves, he can bust out his serious acting chops when needed.

The Words is scheduled for release on September 21.

Battleship Featurette: How the Navy Helped Make the Film

A lot of recent movies are taking on the theme of aliens. There's Men In Black 3, The Watch, the not-quite-Alien-prequel Prometheus, and of course What To Expect When You're Expecting. Those ladies are giving birth to alien babies right? Maybe I misunderstood the trailer.

But Battleship, opening tomorrow, gets the jump on them all. A new featurette, released in advance of the premier, shows how the Navy helped in the film's production.

Soldiers gave the Battleship cast and crew the rundown on how things work on an actual battleship, and to return the favor, director Alex Berg put them in the film. The soldiers claim to have let the film crew in on some secret information, but then, they put it in a video and threw it on the internet, so hopefully it's nothing too classified!

Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, and Rihanna as Soldiers who must battle extraterrestrial forces to save the Earth from ultimate destruction.

Larry David to Star in New Greg Mottola Comedy

I wonder how much of the negotiations for the upcoming untitled Greg Mottola comedy consisted of Larry David staring intensely into Fox Searchlight executives' eyes while clumsy tuba music plays.

Yes, Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David and comedy director Greg Mottola plan to team up for a new film being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, who co-wrote The Dictator together (watch this Dictator helicopter scene for an example of their work).

Larry David Photo

The new film will reportedly be improvised in the same way that Curb is, with the writers outlining the scenes, and the actors filling in the blanks on the fly.

The union of the writers, David, and Mottola may just prove to be absolute comedy gold. Mottola, who took the helm of Adventureland and Paul, is best known for directing Superbad. While this film awaits the green light (and a title), catch up on some hilarious Superbad quotes.

We got word in April that Rosario Dawson and Mickey Rourke will return for the Sin City sequel. Today it's been confirmed that Jessica Alba will also rejoin the cast, and the film will be released on October 4, 2013.

Sin City SequelThough the plot has been kept a secret, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is expected to begin production this summer, with more big casting announcements in the works. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller will both return to co-direct.

It is known, however, that the Sin City sequel will expand on the unique look created in the first film by shooting in 3D.

While fans wait over a year (oh the torture!) for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For to hit theaters, they can catch Mickey Rourke later this year reprising his role as Tool in The Expendables 2 (check out the Expendables 2 trailer).

Katy Perry will be the the subject of the upcoming documentary concert film Katy Perry: Part of Me, and from the looks of the latest poster for the film, Perry's private life will be juxtaposed with her quirky public persona.

Katy Perry: Part of Me Poster 2

The first Katy Perry: Part of Me movie poster showed Perry on stage, posing for unseen fans, and seemed to suggest that the film would mostly focus on performance.

The new poster, however, seems to confirm that in addition to being a concert film, the documentary will tell the story of Perry's life, her rise to stardom, and her divorce with Russell Brand, who can be seen in the upcoming film Rock of Ages.

Look for Katy Perry: Part of Me in 3D beginning July 5.

Frozen Ground tells the real-life story of an Alaskan detective, played by Nicolas Cage, as he searches for a serial killer, played by John Cusack (The Raven), who has stalked Anchorage for over a decade. Eight stills from the film have just been released (click thumbnails to enlarge).

The stills cast the film as an intensely thrilling cat-and-mouse game in the vein of Zodiac or Se7en (visit our Se7en quotes page). Though, you have to wonder if Cusack and Cage flipped a coin to see who would play the killer and who would play the detective (my first instinct would be to reverse the roles).

The film also features 50 Cent (who produced) and Vanessa Hudgens, who plays an escaped would-be victim who helps Cage's character track down the killer. Hudgens is currently shooting Spring Breakers alongside Selena Gomez and James Franco.

Frozen Ground will be released December 1.

Hysteria Movie Review: A Women's Health Haiku

$

Hysteria is as much about the birth of a female self-pleasuring device as it is about the leaps and bounds in women’s healthcare that occurred in the late nineteenth century. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy lead a stellar cast in a period piece film that is also equal parts comedy, history lesson, study in sociological leaps as well as simply a great piece of storytelling.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy in Hysteria
Director Tanya Wexler has weaved a web that feels like the finest of BBC productions, yet is all must-see in the cinema. The reason for that is how the film manages to engage its audience in the plot’s journey. Humor is an enhanced experience with a full theater. Hysteria begins with Dancy’s Dr. Mortimer Granville being tossed out of hospital after hospital for speaking out against what he perceives, and rightfully so, is their out-of-date methods of caring for patients. When Granville meets Dr. Robert Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce) for a job interview, his life will never be the same.

Dalrymple runs a practice that caters exclusively to London’s women. Our young doctor will clearly be in over his head!

In Hysteria, Gyllenhaal portrays Dalrymple’s daughter Charlotte. She is a woman way ahead of her time. Even though she is the child of a doctor who specializes in the advancement of medicine for women, she still thinks her father’s views on the rights of females are grossly outdated. Imagine her feelings towards a young doctor who thinks he has stumbled into the mentorship of a lifetime?

You’re probably wondering where the invention of the vibrator fits into our Hysteria story. After some time at the clinic, ingenuity rears its head and makes history. You’ll have to see it to believe it. But, how it happens allows us to extol the virtues of Rupert Everett and his best role to date. The actor revels in his part as the best-friend/financier to Granville. In a fantastically fun film, Everett is -- believe it or not -- the crème de la crème of a welcome summer cinematic surprise.

What to Expect When You're Expecting Movie Review: Baby, It's Fun

$
0
0

Hollywood is getting better at bringing self-help books to the big screen. What to Expect When You're Expecting isn't quite Think Like a Man, but it feels like an Oscar winner compared to He's Just Not That Into You.

The Cast of What to Expect When You're Expecting
Based on the bible for having a baby by Heidi Murkoff, the film weaves the varying types of pregnancy through its story of five couples who are, you guessed it, expecting.

Cameron Diaz is a TV fitness guru who discovers she's pregnant as she closes out her guest stint on a Dancing with the Stars-type show. Her partner, on and off the dance floor, is Matthew Morrison (Glee). Jennifer Lopez and onscreen hubby Rodrigo Santoro are an artsy couple who have to adopt when they learn they cannot have children. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks and Ben Falcone have been trying for what seems like forever and then one fateful day, the proverbial stork arrives. Then there’s Dennis Quaid (who is Falcone’s father) and his screen wife Brooklyn Decker, whose May-October romance gets a little surprise in the form of a baby. Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford round out the ensemble as a pair of young upstarts that welcome pregnancy by accident.

Why What to Expect works is it takes the book that it is based on and captures its essence and then promptly throws it out the window. In the celluloid arena, story matters. What we have is not only a circle of five stories that surprisingly works, but also a periphery story that may be the best part of the film: The dads' group. You’ve seen their collective coolness, in spite of and because of their adorned-with-fatherhood personas.

Chris Rock anchors the group that also features Reno 911 vet Thomas Lennon. Lopez hears about the group from a fellow Reno 911 star -- Bridesmaids scene stealer Wendi McLendon-Covey -- and promptly sends her freaking out dad-to-be to hang with the boys.

Their simple credo mirrors an iconic film: Rule number one, no talking about what happens with dads' group. As such, their bond is brilliant. They bemoan their situation, but every single one of the young dads emotionally conveys in mere movie minutes their utter adoration for their children. One even talks about loving them so much he is afraid he might eat his baby!

The Men of What to Expect When You're Expecting
The film runs out of steam just as our ladies go into labor. It is an ensemble piece, where very few of the stars actually even share scenes. This is the slight issue we have with the film. Woody Allen is the master of weaving large casts and making it believable that everyone knows each other -- and most importantly -- is an integral facet to their life. But in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the connectedness of our cast is not established until the film’s final moments. It appears to be a storytelling necessity, yet these stories work so well on their own -- they need not unite.

Solid romantic comedies are hard to find. But, what audiences have delivered to them in What to Expect While You’re Expecting is a romantic comedy and so much more. Usually in rom-coms, couples are basking in newfound love. In this film, the affection arrives in the form of unabashed adoration for the little life that these couples are now charged with raising to adulthood.

Blade Runner Sequel to be Penned by Original Writer

First reports of the project suggested it might be a remake or a reboot, but we now have word that the new Blade Runner project will indeed be a sequel. And original screenwriter Hampton Fancher is set to write the script with director Ridley Scott.

Harrison Ford Blade Runner

Often cited as one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, 1982's Blade Runner was originally conceived to launch a series surrounding the Philip K. Dick novel Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep? The other films never came to fruition until now.

No plot, character, or casting developments have been revealed of yet, but Scott has stated that the new film will indeed be a Blade Runner sequel, and not a prequel.

Scott is currently awaiting the release of his highly-anticipated Prometheus, which originated as something of a prequel to Alien (watch a clip introducing Prometheus' David for a preview of the film). Might this Blade Runner sequel eventually diverge into its own film as well?

Disney have hired writer Jesse Wigutow (who is currently penning a reboot of The Crow) to adapt the bestselling children's book Peter and the Starcatchers into a movie.

Peter and the Starcatchers Book Cover

The book, the first of a series, was written by Ridley Pearson and humorist Dave Berry. It tells the back-story of the character Peter Pan. Disney has announced its intentions to develop an entire film series from the books.

The recent smash success of The Hunger Games (check out The Hunger Games logo) has only served to solidify what Harry Potter proved: that children's book series serve as excellent source material for films.

Peter and the Starcatchers has already been adapted into a Tony-nominated Broadway play, so this seems like a sure thing.

New Magic Mike Trailer: Come Down and See The Show

Channing Tatum dancing in a thong? Matthew McConaughey shirtless? Come on, nobody wants to see that. Oh, wait, I'm getting word that lots of people want to see that. For those of you who fall into that category, a new UK trailer for the upcoming film Magic Mike has been released.

Magic Mike follows the life of Tatum's "Magic" Mike Martingano as he teaches a young stripper about the craft while developing a life outside of stripping with his protege's sister. The film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, is partly based on Channing Tatum's own experience as a male stripper.

Magic Mike, opening June 29, also stars Alex Pettyfer, Cody Horn, and Olivia Munn in addition to Tatum and McConaughey (speaking of McConaughey, have a look at some of his most memorable Dazed and Confused quotes from the film that launched his career).

If this trailer wasn't enough for you, the first Magic Mike trailer shows a bit more of Mike's relationship with Paige (played by Horn).

Men in Black 3 Exclusive: Rick Baker Dishes on Makeup Mastery

As audiences, when we view the insanely creative makeup effects in films from Lord of the Rings to Dark Shadows, everyone in that field owes their career to Rick Baker. The Men in Black 3 makeup maestro and seven-time Oscar winner invited Movie Fanatic to his Glendale, California studio for an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit and chat about his illustrious career and his work with director Barry Sonnenfeld on all three Men in Black movies.

Rick Baker and Jermaine Clement on the Men in Black 3 Set
Baker tells us about working on the Cantina scene in Star Wars, how his groundbreaking work on An American Werewolf in London still holds up and how the Men in Black (one of our Top 10 summer movies of all time) series has been a true gift for him as he can pay tribute to the visionary effects artists who inspired him as a child.

Movie Fanatic: The story of Men in Black 3 involves time travel to 1969. The aliens you create for that part of the story look different than previous creations for this franchise. Where did that come from?

Rick Baker: It goes back to the first Men in Black when they said to me that they wanted to see aliens like we’ve never seen before. I said, "That is going to be kind of hard because we’ve seen a lot of aliens." When I did the Cantina scene in Star Wars, it was a lot easier. So I said, “Why don’t we make aliens that look like aliens we’ve seen before, but better?” They went, “No.” And for the second film, they went, “No.” When I saw the script with the time travel element for Men in Black 3... OK, this is the time to do it! I pitched it again: 2012 aliens in Men in Black should look like we’re used to, but 1969 aliens should be retro -- brains and bug eyes, you know -- and guys with space helmets. They thought it was a brilliant idea this time. I got to do aliens that I grew up with, paying homage to the ones that came before me.

Movie Fanatic: What aliens in films inspired you for Men in Black 3?

Men in Black 3 Alien
Rick Baker: You could pretty much name any film that was done and we did something… we ripped off from it [laughs]. It was an homage, done with a lot of love. You know, films like Invasion of the Saucer Men and Colossus of New York, a lot of them were combined versions of aliens. We did a Robot Monster one, a lot of Outer Limits aliens! Any film I saw as a kid, I wanted to do something to.

Movie Fanatic: You’re worked with Barry now for three of these films. What is it about his vision that melds with yours on these fantastical films?

Rick Baker: It’s funny, for the first film, we didn’t know what Men in Black was or what the whole feeling of the film was going to be until we got way into it. He didn’t know me and I didn’t know him. After that film, we had an admiration and trust of each other’s judgment. Barry, at first, I thought was kind of an odd choice for the film. He said in his classic Barry voice, “I’ve never even seen a science fiction movie.” [Laughs]. Oh great. But, this could be a very good thing, something very positive. But Barry, with his background as a director of photography, he sets up shots that are really cool. His thumbprints are all over these movies. He really considers me a collaborator. He really wants that. He makes me look good [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: You get to make an appearance in this movie (photo below… the alien with the brains!), and do you always make yourself a subject of your own work?

Rick Baker in Men in Black 3
Rick Baker: Oh, yeah. I’m almost always a subject of my own work. I usually will do the first version of any character I’ve created on myself. I was Boris before Jermaine was… I do it all the time. Sometimes the director didn’t even know it! In The Grinch, we had 90 people in makeup in Whoville and after it became a well-oiled machine I started getting bored. I’d make myself up and just get into a shot! [Laughs] Ron Howard never knew! I have fun with it. That was on my 60th birthday. It was a good way to spend my birthday. I had those fingertip extensions with the suction cups on, and I realized when I had those on that it would be difficult to go to the bathroom. So, I wasn’t drinking or eating all day. It was an 18-hour day and one of the last shots we did was a long tracking shot. I started to feel like I was going to pass out. I was really light headed. I can’t pass out! First, there are all these guys with heavier things on than me, and second, no one knows I’m in the shot. That would be embarrassing. The room was spinning! But, I kept it together.

Movie Fanatic: As you look back on your career, what are the personal benchmarks for you where you felt you pushed the envelope of your industry?

An American Werewolf in London Mask
Rick Baker: I lived through and helped create the golden age of makeup effects. American Werewolf (photo above from his studio) and The Howling, the transformation was done in a way that hadn’t been done before. That was one of the big ones -- looking back I realized, my crew were kids! The average age of the people on that crew was eighteen. There was no one doing what we did. I just found kids that showed talent and a desire to create and we went to work. It actually holds up now. I actually cringe when I look at it now because we could do it so much better [laughs]. I was pleased with the gorilla suits for Gorillas in the Mist. Harry from Harry and the Hendersons was one of my favorite things that I’ve done. I think he holds up. The movie was a flop. I thought filming it that this was going to be my big film. But, I haven’t met too many people who don’t love that movie.

Haven't seen The Avengers yet? You might legitimately be the only one. Let's all point and laugh at you. Okay, let's not, that's mean.

The Avengers hit the $400 million domestic box office mark yesterday, making it the fastest film to ever hit that number, in just 14 days. The film it beat was The Dark Knight, which reached the mark in 18 days. Perhaps DC Comics can gain back some ground from Marvel once The Dark Knight Rises comes out July 20 (check out these The Dark Knight Rises Bane photos).

The Avengers Banner Ad

Nobody expects The Avengers to slow to a halt any time soon, even with Men in Black 3 coming out next week. So far, Earth's Mightiest Heroes have reached the #9 spot all-time in worldwide box-office sales, and they should continue to climb the charts past at least Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (#8), and possibly Toy Story 3 (#7), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (#6) in the coming weeks.

Celebrate the new record by changing your computer's background to an Avengers wallpaper. Or by seeing the movie for the twelfth time.

What's the bravest thing you've ever done? For me, it's stepping in front of that car to save a kitten. Yes, the car was parked. And yes, the kitten was actually a Hello Kitty backpack. But it was a really cool backpack.

A new clip from the upcoming animated feature Brave highlights Merida's adventurous side.

Brave tells the story of the young Princess Merida, who defies an ancient custom an unleashes chaos on the kingdom. Merida must rely on her bravery and archery skills in order to set things right.

In advance of the June 22 release of Brave, Disney Pixar is teaming up with AMC for a Pixar Summer Movie Weekend, screening the classic animated films Toy Story 3, Up, Ratatouille, and Wall-E. Before each screening, a new Brave featurette will play.

Three new films arrive this weekend and they could not be more different. Will any of them topple The Avengers from its firm box office perch? Time will tell, but the one with the best chance has to be Battleship. Peter Berg’s naval epic takes the board game and brings it to the big screen while Sacha Baron Cohen returns to his comic character roots in The Dictator, and an all-star cast tells us What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Also, in limited release is a delightful film called Hysteria starring Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Dictator: Cohen is back to his Borat greatness in a film that is ripe for our times while simultaneously so outrageously silly that it may even need to be witnessed a second time. The comic is Admiral General Aladeen, a tyrant from a fictional North African country. When he heads to New York to address the U.N., comic mayhem ensues and it is an utter delight, as we state in our The Dictator review.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting: Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Banks lead an all-star cast that brings the famous self-help book to the big screen. It is funny. The film’s romantic. And overall, as we explain further in our What to Expect When You’re Expecting review, it is one welcome surprise delivery.

Battleship: Berg has officially joined the ranks of the Michael Bays of the world with his effort to bring a Hasbro board game to the screen. Unlike Bay, Berg manages to capture uncanny action and pull our heartstrings in a film that is as big explosively as it is emotionally. Check out our Battleship review for more.

Hysteria: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy star in a film that is both romantic comedy and historical chronicle while being a perfect piece of counter-programming to all the blockbuster films at the movie theater these days. Our don’t-miss Hysteria review delves deeper.

Hyde Park on Hudson Trailer: Bill Murray as FDR

Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a thing for cousins. His wife Eleanor was his fifth cousin once removed, and the new film Hyde Park on the Hudson presents the story of his love affair with another distant cousin, Margaret Suckley. Check out the trailer for the new film, which stars Bill Murray as the longest serving president.

The film, opening December 7, takes place during a royal visit from the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. George VI was the subject of 2010's Best Picture, The King's Speech (visit this page for The King's Speech quotes).

From the trailer, the film looks to be a fun and witty drama, and with Murray leading the cast, Hyde Park on the Hudson is sure to deliver.

Murray began his career as a comedic actor on Saturday Night Live and in films such as Ghostbusters and Caddyshack (His Caddyshack quotes are some of the most repeated film lines in history), but in the last decade or so, he has proven to be a thoughtful and engaging dramatic actor.
