MARGARET & ANDREW in The Proposal

To say Andrew wasn’t fond of Margaret at first would be an understatement. In The Proposal, a pushy and manipulative boss, Margaret (Sandra Bullock), forces her young assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her in order to keep her visa status in the US and avoid being deported back to Canada. As part of the deal, Andrew demands her to promise him a promotion. However, a skeptical INS agent thinks they’re committing a fraud and vows to test the couple in a few weeks. ABBY & MIKE in The Ugly Truth

As Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler) improves the ratings of their show, Abby offers him a deal: he will help her with her relationship issues and if he fails, he has to leave the show. As the two spend more time with each other, both on the job and in the dating world, their relationship improves and they go from hating each other to something more.

ANDIE & BEN How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

His plan: to make women fall in love with him.Their paths cross and as they try to set out their goals, one of them eventually wins. Take a look at some How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days quotes

Moonrise Kingdom Featurette: Bill Murray Takes Us Around the Set

Bill Murray might be a little drunk in this featurette. All the better, I say. The ever-hilarious Murray, donning some especially wild hair, expounds on his love of Sailor Jerry and gives viewers a behind-the-scenes-tour of the upcoming Wes Anderson film, Moonrise Kingdom.

Moonrise Kingdom, opening May 25, is about a pair of young lovers who flee their small town, and the subsequent search to retrieve them. The film stars Murray along with Bruce Willis (The Expendables 2), Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman.

Anderson and Murray are frequent collaborators, having worked together on such films as RushmoreThe Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Royal Tenenbaums (read some Royal Tenenbaums quotes). From the looks of the featurette, filming with Anderson got Murray in a rather silly mood--something that bodes well for fans of the duo.

Bill Murray can also be seen playing FDR in the upcoming film Hyde Park on Hudson. Check out the Hyde Park on Hudson trailer for a first look.

Men in Black 3: Tommy Lee Jones Talks Tough

Tommy Lee Jones is without a doubt one of the more esteemed actors of our time. But, the Oscar winner also knows how to play his persona for laughs as he does in the Men in Black films. Jones is back as Agent K in Men in Black 3 and spoke with Movie Fanatic about re-teaming with Will Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld as well as giving us some insight into his role in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming epic Lincoln.

Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black 3
For Jones, making Men in Black 3 was a chance to have a film capture a year that saw a great life event for him -- 1969. “It's the year I graduated from college! That was interesting. And it was a different era. For most of 1969, I was in Cambridge, Massachusetts,” Jones said. “The only way to describe it is: The best of times, and the worst of times.”

Working with Smith is something that Jones was game for a third time, even if his role was slightly diminished with the time travel aspect that had Josh Brolin playing the younger Agent K. “Every scene, every day, every minute is fun with Will,” Jones said, smiling. “I mean, he's a very good actor -- a fine actor -- and we developed a rapport right away and became friends.”

And it was a little odd for the Oscar winner to have to share a role with someone else in the same movie. “Yeah, it's weird. I've never done that. It's never happened to me before,” Jones added.

Working on a special effects film again with Men in Black 3 was a joy for the Harvard trained actor, something that always challenges the acting muscles. “On the set, you see a lot of really interesting special effects, make-up and creatures, that are really fun to look at and interact with -- or not interact with, whatever they motivate. It's a really beautiful box of toys,” Jones said. “I appreciate work of the highest quality when it comes to movie-making.”

Jones also returned to the franchise for a third go-around because he’s keenly aware of how the movie industry must cull younger viewers all the time and get them invested in a form of entertainment that they will revisit as they grow older. “I'm interested in how younger people approach this movie because that's our audience. We play to and play for the younger imaginations, the fresher imaginations in the audience,” Jones said. But, he cautions that it doesn’t always have to be targeted at a young audience, merely fans that are new to the cinema. “That doesn't necessarily mean the people who have lived the shortest amount of time. Some people maintain a fresh imagination well into their 20s [laughs] and others never lose it.”

It is clear that Jones has an affinity for Sonnenfeld and their work together on the Men in Black series. In fact, he finds him quite funny. “Barry is silly as a goose for starters,” Jones said and laughed.

“Also, he knows how cameras work. He knows a lot more about cameras than he'll let on. He has a great deal of control on a movie set and that's something that he tries to hide or gloss over. He would like you to think that he's a great big, silly baby, but he's not fooling me. I know that he can shoot.”

The man is no stranger to directing, having taken the director’s chair once for The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Having had so many stellar helmers in his career, choosing ones who influence him was rather difficult as he didn’t want to alienate any of the artists he’s worked with prior.

“I like the way Oliver Stone works. I like the way Barry works. I like the way Clint Eastwood works, but I've just now named three directors and I've left out 40 or 45, but I don't mean to slide anyone,” Jones said. “The real answer is I take inspiration from every one of them -- inspiration from what they do well and from the mistakes they make that I'm determined not to repeat.”

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black III
Movie Fanatic is beyond thrilled to see his work in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. The actor portrays Thaddeus Stevens, and relished the opportunity to inhabit an important man whom many Americans are not aware of. “Not a lot of people know who Thaddeus Stevens was or what he did or what he wanted to do. To represent him as a character in a movie you need to read some books and study history and draw some conclusions from that,” Jones said. “Inspiration you might say or resources for the actor's imagination.”

In the end, Jones feels he is far from done -- there is still much for the Men in Black 3 star to accomplish. “I want to direct a bunch of movies and act in a bunch of movies. Write some,” Jones said. “I haven't accomplished everything I want.”

The Great Gatsby Trailer: Leo Lives it Up

The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s 3D take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby has landed. Before you bemoan a movie that doesn’t need 3D, let Movie Fanatic tell you: We were treated to a 3D sizzle reel recently in Las Vegas at CinemaCon and it was breathtaking. The Australian filmmaker has used the film form to dazzle with visual marvels that work more like an interactive painting than a cinematic experience.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character with Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher supporting him. The flick opens nationwide on December 25.

Fun fact: If you watch enough Prometheus trailers and TV spots, you'll start to hear that screamy music even when you're not watching. With that in mind, view these two new Prometheus TV spots at your own risk.

Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, and Charlize Theron as crew members on the Prometheus, a spaceship searching for the origins of mankind. And as the TV spot says, "What they find could be its end."

The film opens June 8, at which point you'll be able to do an all day "Ther-athon", and catch Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman, which opens June 1.

In the meantime, download this Prometheus wallpaper to remind yourself to search for the origins of that rust stain on your shower wall. What you find could be the end of the rust stain! ...Which would be a good thing, right?

A Confederacy of Dunces Movie May Finally Happen: Zach Galifianakis to Star

A Confederacy of Dunces is one of the most cursed movie productions in history. An adaptation of the book, written by John Kennedy Toole, was first attempted by Harold Ramis, who got his directing start with Caddyshack (view Caddyshack quotes), with John Belushi to star.

John Candy and Chris Farley were also once slated to play the lead in a screen version of the picaresque novel. Of course, all of these corpulent comedy icons died tragically young. In fact, the book was only published eleven years after Toole himself committed suicide.

Enter Zach Galifianakis.

Zach Galifianakis Picture

Superstitious fans of Galifiankis may worry about the star's fate. But those of us who are less likely to believe in curses will be happy to see the film finally reach its realization (knock on wood), this time by Paramount Pictures.

A Confederacy of Dunces tells the tale of Ignatius J. Reilly, an over-sized, delusional, modern-day Don Quixote, as he traverses New Orleans' French Quarter searching for a job.

Despite his small stature, Galifiankis' ability to switch from soft-spoken weirdo to loud obnoxious jerk, may just make him perfect for the role (check out these Hangover quotes for examples of both). The last attempt to make the film got so far that it even received a release date. The project, which would have starred Will Ferrell, was ultimately scrapped for reasons unnamed.

Interestingly enough, Ferrell and Galifianakis will star together this summer in The Campaign. Watch The Campaign trailer here.

The first TV Spot for Total Recall has been released! Check it out below.

For someone who's trying to kill someone, Kate Beckinsale sure does do a lot of talking. Total Recall, a remake of the 1990 film that more closely resembles the original short story, We Can Remember it For You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick, stars Collin Farrell, Jessica Biel, and Beckinsale (Underworld: Awakening).

The film follows Doug Quaid, originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Expendables 2), in a dystopian future, as he discovers he's a spy whose memory has been erased.

Matt LeBlanc to Star in Indie Comedy Lovesick

Matt LeBlanc has experienced something of a resurgence of late, due to his Golden Globe-winning performance as, well, himself, on the Showtime series Episodes. He is now set to star in his first feature film since 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, called Lovesick.

Matt LeBlanc Picture

Lovesick follows LeBlanc as Charlie Darby, who falls clinically insane every time he experiences love. The film will be written by King of the Hill writer Dean Young and directed by first-timer Luke Matheny.

LeBlanc hasn't been quite as successful on the big screen as his Friends costars. Jennifer Aniston, perhaps the most successful of the bunch, starred earlier this year in Wanderlust (browse through some Wanderlust quotes). David Schwimmer, meanwhile, will reprise his role as Melman in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

No word yet on a shooting start date or a release date. Look for more Lovesick news to come.

The Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson may jump aboard another wildly successful teen book series adaptation. Rumors are swirling that Pattinson is being pegged for the role of Finnick Odair in the second Hunger Games film, Catching Fire. Check out the Catching Fire cover for the book.

Robert Pattinson at the Breaking Dawn Premiere

While the end of Twilight, and his role in the upcoming David Cronenberg film Cosmopolis have led to speculation that Pattinson may be trying to distance himself from his teen idol image (watch the Cosmopolis trailer), he may be swayed by the fact that director Francis Lawrence, whom Pattinson worked with on Water For Elephants, will be directing Chasing Fire.

With shooting beginning in a few months, they'd better snag up Pattinson fast. Catching Fire has a release date of November 22, 2013.

Speaking of release dates, the Hunger Games DVD release date has been announced, and pre-orders begin this Friday!

Two On The Road Clips: Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst

A lot of talk has been flying at Cannes surrounding the film adaptation of the classic American beat novel On the Road, by Jack Kerouac. Kristen Stewart's performance is being raved about, and her nude scene isn't being ignored either. Take a look at two clips from On the Road, the first featuring Stewart (sorry, it's not the nude scene...I know how you think!), and the second featuring Kirsten Dunst as Camille.

On the Road stars Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty as they take a free-spirited journey across the United States. The book, a semi-autobiography, is often considered to represent the voice of the Beat Generation.

The film has been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but so far no American release date has been announced.

Stewart can also be seen this summer in Snow White and the Huntsman, opening June 1. Check out this Snow White and the Huntsman TV spot for more.

Katy Perry's new documentary concert film, Katy Perry: Part of Me will combine concert footage, backstage footage, and biographical footage into one 3D experience. But from the looks of the latest video that dropped, it may largely consist of Perry trying on silly outfits.

Funny that on the words "Katy gets to be herself," up come the peacock feathers on her costume. Spoiler alert: Katy Perry was born a peacock!

The film will reportedly also tackle Perry's divorce with Russell Brand, who can be seen in the upcoming film Rock of Ages, and other personal problems that Perry has faced throughout her life.

G.I. Joe Retaliation Release Date Postponed: G.I. NOOOO!

Yesterday, fans thought they'd only have to wait about another month for the June 29 G.I. Joe: Retaliation. But today, Paramount Pictures has announced its plan to convert the film into 3D. The plan means that the release date will be pushed back to March 29, 2013.

Here's Dwayne Johnson's reaction to the news:

Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe Retaliation

The film, starring Johnson, Bruce Willis, and Channing Tatum (watch his Magic Mike trailer), is a sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The postponement was made largely because international moviegoers have responded very well to 3D releases.

So despite the G.I. Joe: Retaliation posters and trailers that have been released in the last few weeks, do not go to the theater expecting to see the film on June 29. Mark your calenders for March 29, 2013.

Just hope they don't invent 4D films between now and then. That could push the release date all the way into 2014.

Moonrise Kingdom Movie Review: Wes Anderson's Awesomeness

$
0
0

Moonrise Kingdom may be the perfect movie. It is astoundingly well written acted, directed, scored and possesses a charm that is unshakable. The film immediately impresses with its feel. It takes place on a New England island with a unique, even for Anderson, group of characters. The cast is astounding and features Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray (both Anderson staples).

Bruce Willis and Edward Norton in Moonrise Kingdom
The first thing that grabs you is the set design. Anderson has painstakingly crafted a world that is firmly set in the early 1960’s, yet doesn’t feel the need to populate that world with pop songs of the era to reinforce that fact. That is because his Moonrise Kingdom universe so impeccably possesses a textured tone that is not only uniquely Anderson’s, but also is firmly planted in the era it possesses. Instead of relying on a crutch of the time period's pop hits, the film is scored with classical music introduced first in the film’s true opening scene.

We meet the Bishop family -- a seemingly happy clan, led by two lawyers (Murray and McDormand). They have three young boys and a precocious teen, Suzy, played by Kara Hayward. Meanwhile, audiences are introduced to the Khaki-adorned scout troupe led by Scout Master Ward (Norton). These boys live in perfectly lined up tents and follow their leader with extreme efficiency. Only thing is, when they awake on this the opening morning of the film, one of their own has gone missing.

Sam (Jared Gilman) has left the scouts with nothing but a note that comically feels like a letter of resignation. Immediately it sets off an island-wide search for the missing boy that ensnares the island’s lone police officer Captain Sharp (Willis, next seen in Looper).

As Anderson begins to paint his tapestry of a story, we have been introduced to all the main characters, but his Sam is (as he is on film) noticeably missing. When we finally meet the young lad, he is precocious and prickly. He is an orphan and has decided to take his fate into his own hands… but why? It seems Sam and Suzy have become pen pals and developed a bit of an innocent romance. Audiences are finally introduced to Sam as he meets up with the recent runaway Suzy. With Sam’s stellar scout skills, their survival in the woods is never in question. We delight in their relationship which is as childlike as it is powerful.

Yes, backstories abound, but you must see the film to completely enjoy their resonance as Moonrise Kingdom is packed with the typically Andersonian panache. What marvels us is how the filmmaker has composed a world that never gives us any indication of what is going on outside the island and we don’t care. Every nuance and seemingly superfluous moment onscreen is one to treasure.

The marvel above all others that fill the screen over its running time is how the writer-director employed two performers with little previous screen experience to carry his film. This entire instant classic is carried by an ensemble of pros whose work we expect of the highest order. Yet, its two young stars perform their roles with a presence that one expects of actors three times their age.

Without any reservations, Moonrise Kingdom is thus far the absolute best film of 2012. It should not be missed on the big screen to allow the viewer to fully delve into the world of a film master at the height of his game.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has a new red band trailer! But don't worry, you don't see Honest Abe's Lincoln log. You won't have to watch the 16th president "free his South." No, it's red band mostly because of the violence. Check it out.

The film stars Benjamin Walker as Lincoln, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Mary Todd Lincoln, and Dominic Cooper as Henry Sturges, Lincoln' vampire-hunting mentor.

If the plot of the film--one of America's greatest presidents hunting down vampires--seems a bit odd, it's because Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is based on the mash-up novel (a novel combining a pre-existing text with a popular genre such as vampires) of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote the script. Check out our interview with Seth Grahame-Smith for more.

Top 10 Movie Trilogies: Terrific Third Films

$
0
0

Men in Black 3 goes back in time when it rockets into theaters at midnight. The Barry Sonnenfeld directed flick is a fantastic third film in the trilogy (check out our review later today). Countless film series have attempted to close out their trilogies with a piece of work that inspires and enthralls, yet few succeed. So... who rocks it? Movie Fanatic proudly presents our Top 10 Movie Trilogies: Top Third Films. Which third film in a trilogy managed to prove that three times is indeed a cinematic charm?

10. Back to the Future 3
Legions adore the first film. A surprising number appreciate the second. But for us, the culmination of the trilogy that is Back to the Future is handled impeccably in Back to the Future 3. Among our qualifications of a solid third film in a trilogy is the work’s ability to stand alone as a solid story. Marty McFly, as embodied by Michael J. Fox and Doc (Christopher Lloyd) have an unspoken bond by film three. The result is a western meets sci-fi triumph that allowed both stars to soar and bring the franchise to a solid conclusion.

Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future 3
9. Paranormal Activity 3
Oren Peli’s third go-around at his found footage of things that go bump in the night takes us back to the beginning. It is a solid plot move for a series that seems to have gone through its story arc effectively in the first two films. Not only by heading back to the 1980’s and giving the audience the refreshing feel of the early days of home video -- and thus the "found" footage aspect of Paranormal Activity 3 -- can the series' filmmakers draft new scary stories, but also take an invested fan group to the origins of a tale they have treasured.

8. The Bourne Ultimatum
As Eastwood achieved in the Dollars trilogy, Matt Damon mirrors in his sizzling performance as Jason Bourne over Paul Greengrass’ trilogy. As his Bourne learns more and more about who he truly is, the power of Damon’s acting chops is put on full display. The third flick stands with the first two in this earth-shaking action series, but pushes the envelope by coming to a conclusion that is both satisfying and salacious in its ability to have us wanting more.

7. Ocean's Thirteen
Just as Barry Sonnenfeld achieves with Men in Black 3, the third Ocean's movie is leagues better than Steven Soderbergh's second, Ocean's 12. The action is crisper and does what a sequel should do, instead of merely feeling like a third addition. Ocean’s Thirteen recalls the original in so many ways, something audiences want in a series, but also stretches its legs to encompass new ground. In fact, as any film series that employs suspense should do, it enhances everything to a higher level of awesomeness in the third effort.

The Cast of Ocean's 13
6. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Sergio Leone’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly sometimes is forgotten as it is a third part of the filmmaker’s western trilogy. The story is part of his Dollars franchise that began with A Fistful of Dollars and continued with A Few Dollars More. Clint Eastwood essentially made his name in these films and his characterization in Leone’s third film in particular, is riveting and revolutionary.

5. Men in Black 3
Sonnenfeld directs his third Men in Black film with MIB3 and in the process completely atones for Men in Black 2. That film was cherished by fans, but also placed by many under the category of, “That’s your sequel?” As Men in Black 3 premieres, it will give fans of Sonnenfeld’s series a completely unique take on the franchise by going back in time. Josh Brolin is Tommy Lee Jones through his portrayal of a young Agent K. The plot sizzles. History buffs will appreciate the references to 1969 and the earth-shattering year that was. And did we mention Will Smith returns to the cinema for the first time in four years? It is truly out of this world.

4. Return of the Jedi
Although not the best of the first (real) George Lucas trilogy, Return of the Jedi is a terrific stand alone film. Even without seeing Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, audiences could not only follow Return of the Jedi, but also cull the emotional power from the series that has galvanized generations. We can forgive the Ewoks (I know some of you adore them!) and the singing at the end. That is because within the scope of the Star Wars world, Return of the Jedi gives Lucas’ characters a compelling closing story arc and emotionally satisfying means to an ends.

3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Although the second of the Steven Spielberg Indiana Jones trilogy (yes, we’re forgetting the fourth film even exists) was the weaker of the first two, the filmmaker did what so many have done before and crafted a third film that is a complete triumph. The casting of Sean Connery as Indiana Jones’ father is a stroke of genius. The story of the search for the Holy Grail also possesses the power of the great epics in Hollywood history. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade also achieves a rarity in film: It is a piece of work that can be viewed a hundred times and never looses its resonance.

2. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Oscar thought Peter Jackson’s final of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic adventure was the best as the film won a million Academy Awards including Best Picture. What was being built during The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers comes to a satisfying and triumphant conclusion that does what so many third in a series tries to do: Has an ending that makes audiences simultaneously smile and wish for more. The “more” in this case will be coming at you this Christmas as Jackson returns to Middle Earth for the Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit.

On the Edge
1. Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3 not only was a brilliant piece of work and the best of the Pixar series, it was quite possibly the best film of 2010. Neither of the first two films possessed the emotional power of Toy Story 3 that resonated with both young and old(er). When filmmakers seek to embark on their own trilogies, they need to look no further than the Toy Story franchise to see how you build to not only a satisfying close, but a third film that brings all that emotional power culled over two films and wraps it up on a bow that brings tears, cheers and has the lasting power that allows audiences to never forget the experience of seeing it.
