Red Lights Gets a Poster and a Trailer: Robert De Niro's Mind Games

0

We've all thought that Robert De Niro legitimately has psychic powers. He's so contemplative and intimidating. There's something awesome going on in there. Red Lights shows us just what it might look like if psychic De Niro turned evil. Check out the poster and the trailer.

Red Lights Poster

The film stars Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy as a psychologist and assistant whose paranormal investigations lead them to a renowned psychic, played by De Niro.

Murphy, who played Scarecrow in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, does not seem to be returning for The Dark Knight Rises, despite rumors to the contrary. Weaver made an interesting cameo earlier this year in Joss Whedon's Cabin in The Woods (check out some Cabin in the Woods quotes), and plans to appear in the 2016 Avatar sequel that is currently in pre-production (Browse our Avatar quotes page).

Red Lights premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and will hit theaters July 13.

Skyfall Cometh: Who is the Best Bond?

With the arrival of the first trailer for Skyfall (below), Daniel Craig has more than let us know he is in the upper echelons of actors who have that license to kill. Each person who has played James Bond has brought something different to the role. Sean Connery set the standard, George Lazenby had a great one and gone role, Roger Moore brought it into the kitschy 1970’s, Timothy Dalton had a Shakespearean quality to his super spy, while Pierce Brosnan gave the role a whole lot of flash and style. Then, there is Craig, who has in many ways brought us back to the beginning by channeling Connery’s brutish and sexy hero, while still having the style of Brosnan and the acting chops of Dalton and Brosnan.

In our latest Movie Fanatic Round Table, some of Hollywood’s best minds let us know who they thought was the best Bond… now’s your turn.

Crooked Arrows Exclusive Interview: Brandon Routh Rivets

We caught up with the last man audiences have seen playing Superman, Brandon Routh, to talk about his latest film -- the inspiring Crooked Arrows. Routh portrays Joe Logan, a part Native American who runs his people’s casino. Joe has lost his way and even though he has great financial success, his soul is empty. When developers want to expand his casino, the only way the tribe will let him is if he takes over their community lacrosse team as coach. There is a great deal of pride when it comes to having Native Americans take back the game they invented thousands of years ago. Joe’s a former star player and hasn’t picked up a stick in years. What happens over the course of the film between Joe and his players and his community at large is magical.

Routh talks in our exclusive video interview about why the Crooked Arrows part was perfect for him, what it meant to him to be Superman as well as what it was like for this hero to play villain on TV’s Chuck.

Adam Sandler to Replace Mark Wahlberg in Three Mississippi

Adam Sandler is in talks to star alongside Will Ferrell in the upcoming comedy Three Mississippi. Sandler will take the role originally given to Mark Wahlberg, after Wahlberg had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Funnyman Adam Sandlerc

Three Mississippi is about two rival families who compete in an annual Thanksgiving football game. The film would have seen a reunion of Ferrell and Wahlberg's hilarious repartee from the 2010 action comedy The Other Guys (check out some The Other Guys quotes), but depending on which Sandler shows up--the relentlessly kooky Sandler or the understated Sandler capable of bouts of hilarious rage--the film likely won't suffer much from the loss.

Ferrell has been the subject of plenty of exciting news lately, as Anchorman 2 has been announced and is currently in pre-production. Sandler meanwhile is set to star alongside Andy Samberg in the comedy That's My Boy, opening June 15. Three That's My Boy previews clips were just released yesterday.

Three Mississippi is expected to shoot this fall. There is no release date yet.

The new trailer for The Bourne Legacy has hit the net. Jeremy Renner stars in the fourth installment of the Bourne series, with Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton (Moonrise Kingdom) joining on. Take a look:

Renner is making a big splash this summer, starring in two major blockbusters. He played Hawkeye in the smash hit The Avengers, which broke box office records earlier this month, and now he takes over for Matt Damon in the Bourne series.

Damon's character of Jason Bourne will not appear in this film, which picks up after the events of the first three films, though he has not ruled out involvement in future Bourne projects. The film is based on the book by the same name, which is part of a series of nine total novels (with a tenth being published soon).

The Bourne Legacy opens August 3, and has made our list of the Top 10 Summer Movies.

Sitting down with Piranha 3DD director John Gulager for our exclusive video interview and immediately it’s hard not to notice he brought a little friend. Yes, that’s a real prop from his film sitting in his lap, blood-laden lips and all! Gulager saw many challenges in taking over the Piranha franchise in its follow-up to the 2010 smash. The film that opens on VOD and in theaters June 1 stars David Koechner and Danielle Panabaker as a pair of owners of a water park that’s about to get very wet and definitely dangerously wild. Piranha 3DD also features David Hasselhoff as himself and Gulager dishes how that priceless cameo came about.

Titanic is coming to your homes in 3D Blu-ray! The James Cameron film that was re-released in theaters in 3D earlier this year, will be coming to 2D and 3D Blu-ray DVD September 14.

Cameron has recently announced that he wants to focus solely on the Avatar franchise for the foreseeable future (check out some Avatar quotes here), so this may be the only thing to come from the blockbuster director for the next few years. The 4-disc Blu-ray 3D DVD combo pack will feature over 2 1/2 hours of new special feature content, including behind-the-scenes featurettes and deleted scenes.

Titanic Blu-Ray Cover

Titanic originally hit theaters in 1997, and helped to make Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet household names. DiCaprio has since become one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, and will star as Jay Gatsby in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Watch the first Great Gatsby trailer for a look.

Frankenweenie Poster Debuts: Stop-Motion 'Re-Animation'

Tim Burton got his start in stop-motion animation with the animated short Vincent, and has made it an integral part of his illustrious directing career with such gems as The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Corpse Bride. Now the director brings fans a stop-motion full-length version of the short film that helped to launch his career, Frankenweenie.

Check out the poster for the upcoming film:

Frankenweenie Poster

Frankenweenie stars past Burton collaborators Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara form Beetlejuice (here are some Beetlejuice quotes), in addition to youngster Charlie Tahan. Martins Landau and Short also star.

The film follows a young boy who brings his dog back to life through the power of science. But when the zombie dog gets loose, he begins to wreak havoc on the town. Frankenweenie is inspired by the Mary Shelley classic Frankenstein, but it is certainly not the only film to parody the ancient Golem story. The hilarious Mel Brooks film Young Frankenstein did it brilliantly in 1974. Check out some Young Frankenstein quotes for more.

We spoke a bit about the film with the director in our recent Tim Burton interview for his latest film Dark Shadows. Check out some Dark Shadows quotes, and look for Frankenweenie on the big screen in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D October 5.

The Expendables 2 TV Spot: Shoot Something!

0
0

The best line in the newest TV spot for The Expendables 2 is "shoot something!" It really gets to the heart of the film's ethos. If its myriad action superstars aren't blowing something up, why are they there?

The spot is full of explosions and winky action lines like "You're terminated!" I half expect someone to call Jason Stathom "cranky" or hand Chuck Norris a couple Texas Rangers tickets.

In addition the action stars that are returning from the first film, newcomer Liam Hemsworth of The Hunger Games (check out some The Hunger Games quotes) joins the cast as Bill "The Kid" Timmons. Other new additions include Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme (who plays a villain named Jean Vilain...I can't get over that).

The Expendables 2 opens August 17. For a longer look at the film, take a look at the full Expendables 2 trailer.

Snow White and the Huntsman Exclusive: Sam Claflin Chats Becoming Prince Charming

0

Sam Claflin called us from London for an exclusive chat to talk about the eagerly anticipated Snow White and the Huntsman. The film lands in theaters with Kristen Stewart as the legendary fairy tale character, The Avengers’ Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman and Charlize Theron's Evil Queen. Claflin portrays the iconic Prince Charming and found the entire experience filming Snow White with director Rupert Sanders a dream come true.

Sam Claflin in Snow White and the Huntsman
The moment Claflin first met Sanders and saw his vision strewn throughout the director’s office with storyboards and artwork, Claflin knew he had to come aboard the Snow White ship. “He was so passionate about this idea that allowed his massive imagination to run wild,” Claflin said. “Rupert is truly a genius.”

The words on the pages of the script by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini also clinched it for the UK actor. “I love how in the script we’re reinvented and rediscovered this classic tale that we all know and loved and turned it on its head and retelling it with gothic effect,” Claflin said.

The filming of Snow White and the Huntsman was trying. It was action heavy and allowed the actor to further his experience with stunt sequence work that he first tried on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. “It was very hard work and physically demanding. Even the part of Snow White, she is a very physical and strong character. At the end of the day of filming, we were all tired,” he said and laughed. “But, the thing is when you’re so passionate about a project like this, we all went home really wanting to get back to work the next day. It was really fun. It never felt like it was work at all. It was a triumph on Rupert’s part.”

Sanders' film is hardly your grandmother’s Snow White tale and that is evident from the first Snow White and the Huntsman trailer where audiences see Stewart’s character all dolled up in armor, ready for battle. “Kristen Stewart… she really brought it. She has done everything in her power to make this the best it can be. People might have their reservations, but she’s going to prove to people how amazing she is,” Claflin said. He reported being inspired by how the Twilight actress handled herself, given the expectations thrown on her by audiences used to seeing her as Bella. “There’s such pressure on her shoulders. Trust me, she will impress everybody. Without her, this film would not nearly be the great movie it is now.”

One thing remains the same with the fairy tale and that is the romance surrounding Claflin’s Prince Charming and the heroine of the title. Even though it is a role of a lifetime, the actor almost said no because early drafts of the script reminded him too much of another character he played recently. “I did have my reservations about filling Prince Charming’s shoes. I thought it initially was a lot like the character Philip I played in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. He was the guy who got the girl and straight-laced,” Claflin said. After working closely with Sanders, the Prince Charming you see on screen is quite different from that first draft.

“Rupert and I devised this character that has so much bite, it’s edgier than the classic Prince Charming. He doesn’t mind rolling around and getting his hands dirty. It was a great opportunity for me.”

Working on Snow White and the Huntsman gave Claflin an education he never would have received anywhere else.

Sam Clafin in Snow White and the Huntsman
“I’m proud now to step away from this and say that I did that. I needed to do this in order to grow -- having this opportunity to be surrounded by these incredible actors like Kristen, Charlize [Theron] and Chris [Hemsworth]. I grew up watching some of these people on television and in films. I’m proud of what we’ve all achieved. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy it as much as we did making it. I’m excited to see what other people think of it.”

Claflin is dying to tell us about his favorite scene, but unfortunately, his description would be a spoiler! “I know it’s very cliché, but every scene I was involved with was just fantastic to be a part of. There wasn’t a dull moment on set. My first day of filming was my opening scene in the film. It’s this big action epic scene with fights and stuntmen everywhere -- that was just a dream come true,” he said. “I’ve grown up as a kid loving knights and horses and castles and all that stuff. To be on the set, with this Elizabethan backdrop, it was a schoolboy’s dream come true.”

As the film is set to premiere at midnight across the world, how is Claflin feeling? "It’s a mix of nerves and excitement. It’s exciting for everyone to see it, but I’m nervous for the feedback. Will people like it? Will they like the surprises and the unexpectedness of the film? My adrenaline is definitely visible. I’m never going to stop sweating ever again,” he said, laughing.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Makes $100 Million Worldwide

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a modest little dramedy about a group of English pensioners who move to a hotel in India, opened the same weekend as The Avengers. That's already top-5 grossing film all-time The Avengers. You know, biggest opening weekend in history The Avengers? That's some stiff competition.

But The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has just surpassed the $100 Million mark for worldwide box-office gross. Starring Judi Dench (Skyfall) and Bill Nighy, and produced by Fox's indie wing, Fox Searchlight, Marigold's character-driven drama seems to be resonating with audiences all around the world.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Poster

Check out our exclusive interview with John Madden, the director of Marigold, for some insights into the making of the film. If you haven't seen it yet, The Best Exotic Marigold opened wide on May 25, meaning it should be in theaters near you right now.

Piranha 3DD Movie Review: Campy Chaos

0
0

Piranha 3DD lets its audience know what it is up to within the film’s first five minutes. Gary Busey and his onscreen backwoods buddy are wading into the lake water… in search of what? Honestly, we’re not told. But, given the title of this film, you can guess what happens next. They’re baaaaack...

Matt Bush in Piranha 3DD
David Koechner and Danielle Panabaker are a stepfather and daughter who do not get along, but have to because when Panabaker’s mother died, she left the family water park to both of them. Koechner’s Chet has hired “water certified” strippers to serve as lifeguards and has turned the facility into an adult-centric playground. He’s not a monster -- there’s still a child friendly area for the families. But, what he is... is a capitalist who is seeking to turn a profit, regardless of the price. As soon as we meet the new lifeguard staff, the audience also knows what it’s in for with Piranha 3DD.

I guess what is trying to be said here is no one goes to see the sequel to 2010’s smash hit Piranha expecting terse suspense that you don’t see a mile away. It’s also to be expected that the exploitative nature of the film is what is wanted from a fan of the series that began with the original in 1978. But let’s be real, this is a film that pushes its sex appeal with thunderous aplomb along with the craziness of seriously sick killer fish. In that way, 3DD succeeds.

Probably the most cringe-worthy moment in the film (which works for the humor it was intended for) is the cameo by David Hasselhoff. The former Baywatch star embraces his inner lifeguard when he is hired to be the celebrity life saver for the water park’s opening. It’s hard to believe this alcoholic would film a scene where he is playing himself utterly sloshed singing to the accompaniment of a Casio keyboard that he's playing to two female admirers in a cheap hotel. When Hasselhoff swings into action when the inevitable happens -- the piranhas' attack during the opening -- it is one of the most hilarious moments of the film.

What else will fans appreciate? Well, the 3D is as equally exploitative as the movie itself. Everything comes at the audience, and again, if that is something that is enjoyed by the viewer, then director John Gulager has created an operatic opus of carnage and camp.

Check out the new Premium Rush trailer below:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a bike messenger in NYC who picks up an envelope only to discover that a dirty cop (Michael Shannon) is desperate to get his hands on it. Gordon-Levitt is having quite a busy year, as he will also star in Looper, Lincoln, and The Dark Knight Rises.

Premium Rush is surprisingly not the only bike-messenger movie this year. Breaking Dawn Part 2 star Taylor Lautner stars as a bike messenger-turned parkour enthusiast in the film Tracers, which was shopped at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Act of Valor Exclusive Clip: Blu-Ray Deleted Scene

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Movie Fanatic are partnering to bring you an exclusive clip from the upcoming Blu-Ray release of Act of Valor. The film was a number one movie upon its release and arrives home with deleted scenes never before seen… and we bring you one of them exclusively. The clip is right up our alley, given our adoration of all things movie quotes. The Navy SEALs at the heart of our story are sitting around playing cards and chatting about their favorite movie lines, including ones from Rocky and The Unforgiven!

When Act of Valor arrives on June 5 on Blu-Ray and DVD, a portion of the proceeds from film sales will benefit Operation Homefront, a national non-profit that provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our military. Given the fact that the film features real Navy SEALs in action in a fictional story that rivets, we cannot think of a better group to benefit from the success of this film.

The film's story follows our heroes as they circumvent the globe trying to stop an international terrorist. Besides the real heroes, the film also stars Roselyn Sanchez, Alex Veadov, Nester Serrano and Jason Cottle.

You’ll never see action scenes as real as in Act of Valor. Our review of the entire Blu-Ray lands June 5 along with our exclusive video interview with co-director Scott Waugh.

High School Movie Review: Sizzling Stoner Comedy

0
0

Joining the ranks of one of the great joys that is the high school-set movie, High School is one fantastic ride. Matt Bush portrays a valedictorian on the cusp of graduation. One fateful afternoon, he goes against all his better judgment and joins an old friend for a little marijuana inhalation. What he doesn’t know is that the school’s tyrannical Dean (Michael Chiklis) is about to enact a mandatory drug test for the entire school body. Anyone who fails will be immediately expelled. Bush’s Henry panics. Then, his buddy Travis (Sean Marquette) hatches the perfect plan: Get the entire school high and then the test will be rendered void.

Matt Bush and Sean Marquette in High School
That is where the most astounding aspect of this film makes its debut in the form of Adrien Brody’s drug dealer named Psycho Ed. The Oscar winner for The Pianist has gone off the rails in the most brilliant of ways in High School which should go down as one of the actor’s most astounding performances. When he’s in a scene, there is nothing else the audience can look at -- but, more on him in a moment.

Writer-director Marc Stalberg has weaved a yarn that is equal parts hysterical, heady and seriously laced with hijinx -- pun intended. When Travis and Henry steal a priceless amount of a marijuana product from Psycho Ed, they make an enormous batch of weed-laden brownies and slyly switch them with the brownies earmarked for a school bake sale. Watching the entire school unravel, including teachers and Colin Hanks’ barmy Assistant Dean, is one long laugh-out-loud moment.

High School is in many ways a modern study of our society morays and expectations for our youth. Henry embodies the good kid with dreams that are sky high and how our society can have them dashed for one small mistake. The film is also a triumph of the spirit in that it shows that with fortitude to make what’s wrong right… a brave soul can emerge. As embodied by Bush, High School’s hero is an everyman that reminds us ironically of his co-star’s father… Tom Hanks.

But, there are two true stars of this sizzling stoner comedy: Chiklis and Brody. The former got his start in comedy, so to see Chiklis meld into the school administrator from hell is an utter blast. And the former blows out of the water any preconceived notions audiences may have of an Oscar winner. Brody is a revelation. For his performance alone, High School is worth attending. As a whole, the film should take pride in successfully joining the upper legion of high school-set movies that have become perfect pop culture moments in time.

Madea's Witness Protection: New Trailer Released

The new trailer for Madea's Witness Protection has been released. The film stars Tyler Perry in his seventh Madea role, and adds Eugene Levy and Denise Richards to the mix.

Levy stars as George Needleman, a CEO who unwittingly took part in a mafia-backed Ponzi scheme, and now must enter into witness protection with his family. Of course, the house they're chosen to move into is Madea's. Levy is a seasoned comic actor, known in recent years for his role as Jim's Dad in the American Pie movies (check out some American Pie quotes).

Tom Arnold makes an appearance as well, as Needleman's unapologetic colleague. Arnold can also be seen later this year in Hit and Run (watch the Hit and Run trailer here).

Madea's Witnes Protection opens June 29. The film is written, directed, and produced by Perry.

Lawrence is best known for playing Katniss in The Hunger Games (check out some The Hunger Games quotes), though she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 2010's Winter's Bone.

House at the End of the Street also stars Max Thieriot. Look for the film in theaters beginning September 21, and check out this House at the End of the Street still for another look.

Weekend Movie Preview: June 1, 2012

0
0

Welcome to June, and the first weekend of the month finds a classic fairy tale as you’ve never seen with Snow White and the Huntsman, the return of those killer fish in Piranha 3DD and a film that may be smaller in scope, but still packs a punch: the stoner comedy High School.

Snow White and the Huntsman: This Snow White tale is a triumph. Kristen Stewart dazzles, Chris Hemsworth is even more heroic than usual and Charlize Theron deserves an Oscar nomination for her searing turn as the Evil Queen. The Rupert Sanders-directed film is visually marvelous and possesses action scenes that we will be talking about for months to come. Check out my Snow White and the Huntsman review for more.

Piranha 3DD: Time to get back into the water. Why you ask, given that there are piranhas there? Because, it’s a campy and chaotic film and fans would not have it any other way. The film is completely exploitative, but would you expect anything less from the sequel to 2010’s Piranha? As I state in my Piranha 3DD review, you know what you’re getting when you witness this flick.

High School: A welcome surprise in the summer season of blockbusters is this small comedy about a high school valedictorian who gets high for the first time on the eve of the school's first mandatory drug test. When he gets the entire school high through brownies at a bake sale, hilarity ensues, but so much more. As mentioned in my High School review, this film is right up there with some of Hollywood’s great high school-set films.
