MGM has decided to make a reboot of the 1987 sci-fi action film RoboCop instead of buying my spec script about a small-time pond policeman called RowboatCop. And now it has been announced that Samuel L. Jackson will be joining the cast.

Samuel L. Jackson Picture

The new RoboCop will be directed by Brazilian director Jose Padilha, and will star Joel Kinnaman (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as the cyborg law enforcer. Jackson will play a powerful TV mogul named Pat Novak, and Gary Oldman will play RoboCop's creator.

The prolific Jackson is currently in the midst of a 9 picture deal to play Nick Fury in the Marvel comic movies, including Iron Man, Captain America, and The Avengers. He is currently shooting Django Unchained, which will release its first trailer later today!

As of right now, there are not many story details, but like the original, the RoboCop reboot will chronicle a police officer who is rebuilt as a cyborg after almost being killed in the line of duty.

Disney Pixar's newest animated film Brave introduces the Wise Woman in a new video in the style of an infomercial. Have a look:

Disney has been releasing a lot of fun videos in the style of commercials in the weeks leading up to the premier, like thisBrave kilt video. This particular one gives us a look at the Wise Woman, here called a Witch, played by Julie Walters (Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter movies).

Brave also stars Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, and Craig Ferguson, and chronicles the young Princess Merida as she struggles with tradition in a quest to be herself.

Another 3D animated feature from Disney has just released its first trailer. Check out the Wreck-It Ralph trailer for a first look, and catch Brave in theaters June 22.

Django Unchained Trailer is Here: You Had My Curiosity, Now You Have My Attention

The long-awaited Django Unchained trailer has dropped! I won't make you read anything before you watch it. Except for that. Sorry.

Quentin Tarantino's latest revenge flick stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers). From the looks of it, fans can expect a performance from Waltz on par with his stellar work in Tarantino's last film, Inglorious Basterds.

In Django Unchained, Jamie Foxx plays a slave named Django, who is promised freedom if he can lead a bounty hunter to his men, and save his own wife in the process. Foxx, who began his career as a comedian, is certainly capable of handling dramatic roles, as he won the Academy Award for his role as Ray Charles in Ray.

Django Unchained hits theaters December 25. That same day, you can see Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.

Denzel Washington (Safe House) stars in Robert Zemeckis' latest film, Flight, as an airline pilot who successfully lands a crashing airplane. After he becomes an American hero, an investigation into the crash leads to a troubling discovery.

Check out the first trailer below:

Flight also stars Don Cheadle, John Goodman, Melissa Leo, and James Badge Dale, who recently signed on to play the Iron Man 3 villain, Coldblood. Zemeckis, the well-known director behind Back to the Future and Forest Gump (visit our Forest Gump quotes page), hasn't made a live action movie since 2000's Castaway. He has instead directed three uncanny valley-approaching motion-capture animated films: Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol.

Flight will land (I know, I'm probably the 800th person to do that) on November 2.

Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time: My God, It's Full of Stars

$

Prometheus is landing in theaters, supposedly as a prequel to what many call one of the best all-time science fiction movies -- Alien. We were inspired by Ridley Scott's latest film and the legacy his sci-fi films have had over the last three decades to set out and name our Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time.

10. 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece is a film that is not only astounding as a science fiction vehicle, but it triumphs as a fantastic movie, no matter its genre label. There are so many iconic images from 2001: A Space Odyssey… something that you will find in many of our top 10 sci-fi flicks. It also is paid tribute, in a way, in the opening moments of Prometheus. Its beginning mirrors the opening moments of 2001. Makes you think, no?

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. Metropolis
This silent movie classic still holds up so well. The 1927 film from Fritz Lang is often imitated, but never recreated. Like those indelible images we mentioned for 2001, replication is another form of flattery in the sci-fi world and few films have had their feel, premise or scope inspire legions of movies that would follow it like Metropolis.

8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Steven Spielberg may have announced his cinematic presence in 1975 with Jaws, but it was his 1977 sci-fi epic that secured his place as one of movies' maestros. The ensemble story of what an international group of individuals go through as an alien presence is about to pay us a visit is as resonant now as it was decades ago. We can’t decide which storyline of the film is our favorite, they’re all equally outstanding!

7. Back to the Future
A film that can meld science fiction, time travel, comedy, romance and thrills -- all with a soundtrack peppered with Huey Lewis songs -- and we’re in! Back to the Future would arrive in 1985 and spawn two more sequels and make a movie star out of Michael J. Fox. The way director Robert Zemeckis (who was mentored by Steven Spielberg… go figure) crafted his instant classic is still being held as a standard for time travel movies that seek to have a little fun.

6. The Matrix
There is no question when The Matrix arrived in 1999 it rocked our collective worlds. The Wachowski brothers likely will never again live up to the revolution they crafted with the “What is The Matrix?” cultural phenomenon. The story of Neo managed the amazing by melding the classic finding-The-One tale that films have always turned to while simultaneously taking audiences on a sci-fi journey that was unlike anything we had ever seen before.

Keanu Reeves in The Matrix
5. The Thing (1982)
John Carpenter created fear in a sci-fi world that may have been frozen on the outside in form of the vast tundra that our characters inhabited. But inside, Kurt Russell’s character and his cohorts were playing with fire in the form of unidentified creatures threatening to kill all who cross their path. Try watching Carpenter’s masterwork without flinching at least once. Even though it feels like horror, it still gives audiences a sci-fi world that many to this day still aspire to recreate (such as the 2011 remake… er, sorry… prequel).

4. The Terminator
James Cameron’s The Terminator showed that a sci-fi classic could be created with very little. Sure, the film feels low budget and was, but because the story is so stellar and the filmmaking so crisp, when Arnold Schwarzenegger and his killing machine arrive to assassinate Sarah Connor, audiences didn’t take a breath for two hours. Cameron managed to give us a time travel story that kept to the genre’s rules, but still presented it in a way that has never felt so pressingly urgent.

3. Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back
We lump these two together because it’s hard not to think of one without the other. Star Wars introduced us to the Lucas world of wizardry while Empire Strikes Back is largely why the film series is considered so iconic. Collectively, these two movies manage to create a revolution story that combines all the classic elements such as romance and the battle of right over wrong, and presented it in a way that not only appealed to vast generations, but changed our world forever.

2. Blade Runner
When it comes to the final two of our Top 10 Sci-Fi Films of All Time, honestly, one and two could interchange. But, in Movie Fanatic’s world, there can be only one. Blade Runner begins our final two as it achieves the rarity in the history of sci-fi filmmaking: It does not look dated. Ridley Scott painted a future that still feels futuristic. The story, the filmmaking and incredible Harrison Ford performance all add up to nothing short of brilliance.

The Cast of Alien
1. Alien
Alien edges Blade Runner in that it takes the simplest of concepts and manages to blow it up into not only the top sci-fi film of all time, but one of Hollywood’s greatest epics and thrillers. Ridley Scott’s film also gave us one of the first female heroines that transcended gender in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Its tagline may have seemed like overkill at the time, but it's so true in the world of sci-fi and especially with Alien: In space, no one can hear you scream.

Maybe if Peter Parker hadn't cried giant lizard so many times as a child, Captain Stacy would believe him this time.

"My homework transformed into a giant lizard!"

"No mom, I didn't crash the car, a giant lizard stepped on the hood!"

"A giant lizard deleted this week's Smash from the DVR before you watched it!"

So now it's like, oh sure....a giant lizard is terrorizing the city.

The latest clip from The Amazing Spider-Man features Andrew Garfield and Dennis Leary talking about The Lizard, in a classic "ya gotta believe me" scenario. Something tells me Garfield is going to have to take care of this thing on his own. If only he had some kind of bug-like power....

Clips of this summer's big superhero movies have been flooding the internet of late. Emma Stone brought a new Amazing Spider-Man clip with her to The Tonight Show, plus there was The Dark Knight Rises MTV footage from last weekend. The internet can barely deal!

The Amazing Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb, premiers July 3.

The newest video blog for Skyfall talks with Costume Designer Jany Temime about the wardrobe for the latest Bond film.

The featurette has loads of footage of Daniel Craig doing what he does best: looking handsome in suits. Surely fans can expect to see a lot more of that upon Skyfall's release.

The film stars Craig in his third appearance as James Bond, along with Javier Bardem (who, incidentally, is also great at looking handsome in suits) as the villain, and the heretofore unknown Skyfall bond girl Berenice Marlohe. Judi Dench (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will reprise her role as M, and in fact the movie focuses a lot on her character's secret past.

Skyfall opens November 9. It will be Sam Mendes' first foray into the world of Bond.

Prometheus Movie Review: Ridley Scott's Sizzler

$
0
0

Has Ridley Scott crafted a prequel to his Alien with Prometheus? After seeing the film, it appears to be a moot point -- it clearly is. As that film has been called the greatest sci-fi film of all-time, audiences should be prepared. Although Scott’s latest is a visual and thrilling marvel, it never quite reaches the stratosphere of Alien excellence.

Michael Fassbender, Logan Marshall-Green and Noomi Rapace in Prometheus
In the film’s opening moments, Scott gives us a 2001: A Space Odyssey-type beginning to his story that, if nothing else, sets the stage for the questions that are presented throughout the film: Where do we come from? Are we alone in the galaxy? Are the drawings found on cave walls, as seen in the Prometheus trailer, connected?

Noomi Rapace stars as Elizabeth Shaw, the scientist who discovered the drawings. She sees them as an invitation with a map to find the place in the galaxy that she believes is the source of our existence. Shaw is so convincing, the head of Weyland Industries (Guy Pearce’s Peter Weyland) spends two trillion dollars building her the spaceship Prometheus to get there. Fans of the Alien mythology are keenly aware of the “company” that owns the ship we soon see rocketing through space.

Movie Fanatic is not a publication that will offer any spoilers, so our plot description stops here, but what we can tell you is that screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts are keenly aware of writing a project that plays to Scott’s strengths as a filmmaker. There are countless scenes that will have you marveling in disbelief. There is one in particular that is one of the most jaw-dropping cinematic moments we have seen in some time. Yes, the plot has many holes and some of it unfortunately does not add up. Yet, as a whole, it is saying something that Prometheus clocks in at 124 minutes and never feels long. In fact, the film moves along at a light-speed pace.

Scott has not ventured into the sci-fi world since Blade Runner, a couple of years after his masterwork of Alien. With the added filmmaking technology at his fingertips, his return to the genre feels like a conquering hero returning home. Some purists may not appreciate how the science seen onscreen appears leagues beyond what was shown in Alien, given that this supposedly takes place decades prior. But, what’s a filmmaker to do? Make a film that looks archaic?

Michael Fassbender in Prometheus
The cast is stellar, but the standout has to be Michael Fassbender as the droid David. The actor continues his impressive run that has us thinking he is the greatest thespian of his generation. His steely veneer is haunting and further reminds us of Alien by recalling the work of Ian Holm as the droid Ash.

Also, we would call Prometheus more of a science fiction film than a horror flick. Whereas Alien was equally both, there is significantly less of a scare factor in Scott’s latest. But, let’s be clear: It is thrilling and the moments of shock and awe are always around every corner. Is Prometheus worth the wait after all the pre-release buzz that essentially began when Scott announced the film as his next project? Unequivocally, that is an absolute yes.

Prometheus' Ridley Scott Speaks: On Alien & Deep Space Horror

$

0

Ridley Scott, after years of buzz, is ready to have the world see his Prometheus. The titular ship could be a metaphor for the filmmaker’s journey. He took great pains to create it and now the stomach butterflies are turning as it is ready to take off in this "prequel" to his classic Alien.

Ridley Scott on the Set of Prometheus
As Alien was a horror movie that was wrapped in a science fiction blanket (What are the Top 10 Sci-Fi Films of All Time?), when it comes to how Prometheus stacks up, Scott simply feels as a filmmaker you have to keep it general. “The bottom line is just to make a good movie. Just make a (expletive) good movie. It’s got nothing to do with horror or whatever. That’s why there’s only a few really, really great ones. Thereafter, there are only evolutions of copycats,” Scott said.

There are two that still get Scott to this day. “One was called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre by Tobe Hooper. I knew I didn’t really want to go see that movie, just by seeing the (expletive) poster. But, eventually I had to, as research for Alien. The other great one, with a single idea, was the first Exorcist. Possession of the body by a demon was marvelous. Since then, there have been 900,000 clones of those ideas.”

With expectations so high for Prometheus, Scott admitted that he went obsessive over the details. “You think about everything, down to the shoe laces. We even had a big argument about the globular helmets. I was certain that I wanted the fully spherical glass helmet,” Scott said. The filmmaker won the argument over the helmets when he referenced a biography about a technology titan.

“In my research, I read this biography on Steve Jobs’ life and he talks about how he wanted to make his entire office of this glass, which is called Gorilla Glass, and this guy said, ‘We don’t make it anymore.’ So, Steve Jobs actually then re-opened up the factory and started remaking Gorilla Glass. If I’m in 2083 and I’m going into space, why would I design a helmet that has blind spots? What I want is something where I have a 360 view. Glass, by then, will be light and you won’t be able to break it with a bullet.”

Another connection between Alien and Prometheus is the rather replicated brilliance of a droid at the center of the story. The first film had Ash (Ian Holm) and in Scott’s latest, it’s embodied by Michael Fassbender, who is brilliant as David. The director did not see making David too flashy as the concept has been around for centuries. “There’s nothing new about a robot. That idea is 800 years old. So then, embrace what it is. By embracing it, he becomes that much more interesting because he’s just part of the ship. In a sense, he’s not just butler, but he’s housekeeper and maintenance man, who legitimately does not need to sleep,” Scott said.

Having that starting point allowed him to have some fun with the droid and the character ensemble. “From that, then he also becomes extremely useful during the story, as it evolves. There’s a great scene where Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) is actually a bit of a bitch, occasionally, and says, ‘Hey, you, boy!’ to him. I thought that was real cheeky. And then, he says, ‘Why are you wearing one of those suits? You don’t have to breathe.’ It ends up with David saying, ‘Not too close, I hope,’ referring to being told, ‘We’re making you guys just like us.’ You don’t know who’s insulting who there! That’s when those turn-abouts start to occur.”

Ridley Scott Films Prometheus
Although technology has greatly improved for a filmmaker, Scott admits that it doesn’t necessarily mean the process has gotten easier. “It’s easier to carry it out, but it’s still as difficult to write something,” Scott said. “In fact, it’s getting more difficult because there are almost too many movies being made.”

Lola Versus Movie Review: Indie Darling Delivers

$

0

Lola Versus is Greta Gerwig’s movie, through and through. She was a marvel in Damsel in Distress and is quickly becoming the new face of independent film. Gerwig’s Lola seems to have it all. Her graduate studies could not be going better. She’s engaged to the man of her dreams. So, what is she battling that the film is titled Lola Versus? When life changes abruptly -- her fiance panics and breaks up with her -- our titular character feels its her against the world.

Greta Gerwig in Lola Versus
The film follows a year in the life of a 29-year-old woman and the 365 days between being firmly in your twenties and knocking on the door of your thirties. For Lola, it will be the most trying year of her life, but also the one that gives her a firm grasp on knowing herself more keenly than she ever could have previously.

As her former fiance Luke (Joel Kinnaman) wavers on moving forward or getting back together, Lola explores a series of new relationships -- including one with her male friend, Henry (Hamish Linklater) -- that complicates things. You see, Henry is Luke’s best friend. As Gerwig’s character attempts to finish her graduate work and compose her dissertation, she earns money at her parents’ bar/restaurant as a waitress, which allows them to offer parental counsel to their daughter who desperately needs it. It’s fabulous to see Debra Winger again, who plays Lola’s mother, starring with Bill Pullman as her pop.

Lola Versus is a compelling story. Anyone can relate to what she goes through and can find inspiration in how she pulls herself out of her sorrow and finds a path towards her future. Gerwig is a superb actress, one we think audiences will be seeing a lot of heading forward. Some expected her to blow up after starring opposite Russell Brand in Arthur. But after that film failed to find an audience, her string of independent films will have to slowly introduce her to a wider audience. In movies such as Lola Versus and Damsels in Distress, we see a quirky charm that makes us wonder when this indie actress will be huge in the mainstream.

Unfortunately, it probably won’t be with her latest. Perhaps it will come in Woody Allen’s next European adventure, To Rome with Love. We have a huge problem with the third act of Lola Versus and how the film concludes. Not for one minute does Movie Fanatic believe that what happens to Lola would unfold as it does. It is in no way a fairy tale ending, don’t get us wrong. It has more to do with where the blame is placed for what has happened to Lola in the 29th year of her life. Gerwig deserves better.

Mrs. Doubtfire Trailer Re-Cut Shows Us What the Comedy Would Look Like as a Horror

$

If you think about it, it is kind of creepy. Man is court-ordered to stay away from his kids, so he dresses up like an old British lady and sneaks his way back into their house. A hilarious re-cut trailer, brought to our attention by Vulture, shows us just what Mrs. Doubtfire would look like as a horror film.

Robin Williams, an iconic standup and comedic actor, does have some horror experience. Remember One Hour Photo? Or The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan's remake of Insomnia (not quite a horror film, but a psychological thriller).

You don't quite notice the ominous glances and eerie dialogue until you see Mrs. Doubtfire recut as a horror film. What this video also exposes is that we, as humans, are pretty easily manipulated. Throw in a certain style of editing and music, and our dumb monkey brains just go "Ooh! I know what that is! Horror movie! Horror movie!"

What are some other comedy movies whose premises could easily be turned into horror films? Let us know in the comments section below!

Weekend Movie Preview: June 8, 2012

The sci-fi epic that everyone has waited for has finally arrived this weekend: Prometheus. Ridley Scott’s first foray into the science fiction world since Blade Runner is joined at the movie houses across the country by the return of the Madagascar gang for a third film as well as Robert Pattinson breaking out of the Twilight mold in Bel Ami. The new “It Girl” of independent film also has a new flick out, Lola Versus. There’s something for everyone this second weekend of June.

Prometheus: The “is it a prequel to Alien or not” discussion is over: Scott’s latest film exists in the same world, and gives fans of the sci-fi classic much more to chew on. The cast is superb, especially Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace. It is the sci-fi epic we’ve been waiting for since, well, Blade Runner. Check out our Prometheus review for more.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted: The funny foursome from the Central Park Zoo leave Africa for the greener pastures of the European continent in this third film in the Madagascar series. The franchise adds three new characters, voiced by Martin Short, Bryan Cranston and Jessica Chastain -- all outstanding additions. As we state in our Madagascar 3 review, the stars of this franchise are still truly Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett-Smith, David Schwimmer and Chris Rock.

Bel Ami: Pattinson is unbelievably good in the Parisian period piece that allows the actor to truly show his range. He plays Georges Duroy, the son of a poor farmer who has such disdain for his upbringing, he will do anything to climb out of his social class. And that means using a trio of married women to climb the ladder of importance in 1890s Paris. For more on the film, read our Bel Ami review.

Lola Versus: Greta Gerwig continues her independent-movie-darling streak after Damsels in Distress with this film about a 29-year-old and her tumultuous year before she turns 30. It’s a good enough film, but as explored in our Lola Versus review, Gerwig deserves better.

Del Toro is known for his uniquely moody directing style in such films as Hellboy as Pan's Labyrinth (check out some Pan's Labyrinth quotes). He was originally slated to direct the upcoming Hobbit films, which was eventually handed over to Peter Jackson. Del Toro did, however, co-write the script.
