Dredd reboots the British comic book character instead of remaking the 1995 film Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone (The Expendables 2). This time, Karl Urban stars as the title law enforcer in a post-apocalyptic Mega-City as he teams up with a trainee to fight a gang selling a dangerous reality-altering drug.

Urban is best known for his role as Dr. Leonard McCoy in 2009's Star Trek, and will return for the upcoming Star Trek 2 film. Lena Headey, Domhnall Gleason, and Olivia Thirlby, known for her supporting role in Juno, also star (visit our Juno quotes page).

English director Pete Travis directs the film, with a script by Alex Garland. Dredd opens September 21.

Prometheus and Madagascar 3: Box Office Odd Couples

Prometheus made $3.6 million dollars in last night's midnight screenings alone, and early numbers suggest that the film is on its way to $20-25 million Friday along with...wait for it...Madagascar 3!

It's really no surprise that either is doing well. Prometheus, starring Charlize Theron, is one of the most anticipated films of the summer, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted continues an extremely successful animated franchise that has made a total of over $1 billion. One offers a movie night for adults, the other, for families.

Michael Fassbender is David in PrometheusBen Stiller is Alex and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

Still, it's fun to see the two disparate films neck-and-neck in the Friday numbers. It got us thinking about some other films that, in a perfect world, would have competed in the box office. Who do you think would have won out in the following battles?

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space OdysseyAlvin and the Chipmunks in Chipwrecked

2001: A Space Odyssey vs. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked: While Space Odyssey is one of the best films ever made; a veritable sci-fi magnum opus from revered director Stanley Kubrick, Chipwrecked has singing rodents in sweaters. Advantage: Chipwrecked.

Gone with the Wind PhotoHannah Montana

Gone With the Wind vs. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour: You may not know this, but, adjusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind is the highest grossing domestic film of all time. But, to be fair, it was released in 1939. And in 1939 you didn't go to the movies, you went to the movie. And the movie was Gone With the Wind. That's cheating. Hannah Montana's Concert film was just for 13-year-old girls and it still made over $65 million. Advantage: Hannah Montana.

Meryl Streep in The Bridges of Madison CountyBilly Madison Photo

Bridges of Madison County vs. Billy Madison: Both of these films were actually released in 1995, and were just a few months shy of actually competing in the box office. Usually advantage would go to the film with the most state capitals in its title, but alas: they're both tied at one. Bridges stars Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, but Billy Madison quotes include lines about peeing your pants and feeding donkeys beer, so... Advantage: Billy Madison.

It may be a slightly unfortunate title.

"Disney's Frozen"

"Yeah, I know he is."

But Frozen, the new animated film based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale The Snow Queen, has received a release date of November 11, 2013. The film stars Kristen Bell as Anna, a young woman on the adventure of a lifetime, and Idina Menzel as the Snow Queen.

Kristen Bell Photograph

Menzel is a Tony Award-winning actress who has as also lent her talents to such films as 2007's Enchanted (check out our Enchanted quotes page). Bell is set to appear later this year in the Dax Shepard comedy Hit and Run (have a look at the Hit and Run trailer).

The animated film takes place in a kingdom that has been cast in an eternal winter. Bell's Anna embarks on a journey with a mountain man named Kristoff, in order to seek the Snow Queen and put an end to the spell. The part of Kristoff has yet to be cast.

While Frozen awaits production, Disney's newest fairy tale, Brave will hit theaters June 22.

Prometheus Quotes: Big Things Have Small Beginnings

With Prometheus receiving both immense praise and confused reservations this weekend, the internet is abuzz with posts attempting to solve some of the film's more perplexing unexplained plot points and lines of dialogue. With that, what better time to highlight some of the best quotes from the film?

The dialogue in Prometheus ranged from slick action lines, to subtle clues, to not-so-subtle expository outbursts, and even downright ridiculous conversations. Here are some of our favorite Prometheus quotes (most of which include the amazing Michael Fassbender as David), what are yours? Let us know in the comments!

No one can say new Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence isn't aiming high.

Numerous sources report that Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered a pivotal role in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel: if he accepts, the man who just finished a run as Willy Loman on Broadway will come on board this blockbuster franchise as Plutarch Heavensbee.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Premiere Photo

Heavensbee takes over as Gamesmaker for Seneca Crane in the follow-up, which is scheduled for a November 2013 release. He's a politically savvy character who will have a lot to do with Katniss' fortune going forward.

As we await word on Hoffman's status, meanwhile, the debate among fans rages on: Who should play Finnick Odair in Catching Fire?

DreamWorks Animation has begun to announce the cast for its upcoming 3D computer-animated feature, Mr. Peabody & Sherman. The film, based on the 1960's cartoon segment on The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, features a talking time-traveling dog and his boy companion as they travel through history.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

The film will star Modern Family's Ty Burrell as Mr. Peabody, a role that was previously filled by Robert Downy Jr. Playing the boy Sherman will be Max Charles, who will also appear as young Peter Parker in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man.

Stephen Colbert, Allison Janey, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter, and Stephen Toblowsky have all signed on to join the cast. There is no word yet on who they will play. Kemper, best known for her role as Erin on The Office, also starred in last year's hit comedy Bridesmaids (check out some Bridesmaids quotes).

Mr. Peabody & Sherman is directed by Rob Minkoff, and is scheduled for release on November 8, 2013.

That's My Boy Interview: Adam Sandler Gets Naughty

$

Adam Sandler storms back into theaters as you haven’t seen him in years. The leash is gone and he is firing R-rated jokes in That’s My Boy that should thrill his longtime fans. Movie Fanatic caught up with the superstar to talk his latest film, why Andy Samberg was perfect to play his onscreen son and how he found his inner Donny Berger.

Adam Sandler in That's My Boy
In That’s My Boy, Sandler’s character is 15 when he has an affair with his teacher (Avi Amurri Martino, daughter of Susan Sarandon  -- who plays her as a more mature woman later in the movie). He gets rich from capitalizing on his scandalous fame when the story becomes a national obsession. The teacher is sent to prison, but… she’s pregnant. So, Donny is charged with raising the child. When the kid turns 18, he wants nothing to do with his dad and leaves the drunken nest.

Movie Fanatic: Was it fun to let loose, as this is your first R-rated comedy in years?

Adam Sandler: It was fun to speak the way I do in my bathroom. I grew up cursing a lot, it felt good. My parents told me to stop -- they weren’t enjoying my albums. They weren’t enjoying a lot of things that I was doing with my life. And then, my father passed away and he’s not here to yell at me. So my mother, I bullied her and told her I’m going to be doing some more crazy stuff. I just enjoy it.

Movie Fanatic: In the film, it's not just your character who gets seduced by an older woman, it kind of becomes a thing later on... what is it about romancing older women that appeals to you for comedy?

Adam Sandler: I’ve always liked older ladies [laughs]. My mother had B'Nai B'rith in my house. I don’t know… they seem to be nice. They’ve seen it all. They’ve seen every penis size. They’ve seen some giants and they’ve seen some that don’t cause too much pain, and they’re nice about it. They find a way to compliment it no matter what. I’ve always liked older ladies for that reason. Young ones are like, “Whoa, I was expecting more dick there.” The older ones are like, “I can handle it baby.”

Movie Fanatic: Why Andy to play your son?

Adam Sandler: We knew each other the last few years and our names are similar and our looks are somewhat similar. The Judaism is quite similar [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: What was the highlight of working with Andy on That's My Boy?

Adam Sandler: I love the guy. We got tighter and tighter. I kept telling my buddies about Andy. He’s kind of similar to me, a little better… a little smarter. He’s a little better looking. He’s got all good angles. I can fake being good looking if I’m looking dead at you. When I move left or right, it’s like, “What the (expletive) is that?” [Laughs] Andy can turn his head either way and people are like, “Oh, I like him.” He has hard-working comedy chops. He reminds me of the guys I came up with as he knows it’s all about being funny. He gave me good stuff in the movie. We’d finish a take and Andy would say, “What if you say this…” That’s not a common thing in my life where co-stars are looking out for me and try this joke. It was beautiful. I think his future is whatever he wants to do with it. He’s a little more mellow than me. When I was his age, I was a little more obsessed with kicking ass. He’s obsessed with having a good life and I like that.

Movie Fanatic: Andy just left SNL. What was it like for you?

Adam Sandler: You’re scared. It’s a home. You have all your brothers and sisters there and it’s a great time. With 20-plus shows a year you’re guaranteed to definitely get on some of them and get to do your thing. You just get a feel like, “I’ve done what I’ve got to do. I don’t want to repeat myself too much. I’ve got to figure out some other things to do.” So, when that goes away, there’s no life jacket anymore. You’re on your own. I remember watching the show when I left. That was a funny thing. I was like, "Oh (expletive), they can do it without me!" They do that quick. There’s no, “Oh God, I miss that guy." It’s more like, “Thank God that guy’s out of the (expletive) way." So, it hurts when you watch it at the beginning.

Movie Fanatic: Seems like That's My Boy was a difficult shoot [laughs]…

Adam Sandler: We on the Cape (Cod) together at a beach house for five weeks, I mean, come on… it was just fantastic. We got to be funny. We got to curse!

Movie Fanatic: How did you come up with the voice and the mullet?

That's My Boy: Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler: That hairstyle was a last day choice. I know that guy and the hair helped me not look like myself. It was nice to be wigged up. That voice, I grew up with… I’m from New England. I heard that voice on many, many drunk people. I got beat up by that voice a lot. [In character] “Who do you think you are, you (expletive) hot shot.” I knew guys like Donny Burger. I really love playing the guy. My friend Nick Swardson, who’s in the movie, every couple of weeks when I see him, he says, “Boy, I wish you were Donny. I miss that guy.”

Movie Fanatic: Part of the reason your onscreen son leaves you and starts his own life is because your Donny continually embarrasses him. Did your parents embarrass you?

Adam Sandler: My dad used to wear the same pants every day. And my friends would come over like three times a week and see him in those same brown pants. I was always like, “Dad, can you just once put on the blue pants?”

Chris Hemsworth to Star in Adaptation of Real-Life Moby Dick Tale

Chris Hemsworth seems destined to play buff, long-haired, pre-technological heroes. His character of Thor is based on the ancient Norse god of thunder, Snow White and the Huntsman is based on a 19th century Germanic fairy tale, and now Hemsworth will appear in the true story of the Whaleship Essex, a ship that was famously sunk by a sperm whale in 1820.

The events of the Essex served as the inspiration for Herman Mellvile's 1851 novel Moby Dick, though the book on which this film is based, In the Heart of the Sea, was written from the notebook of a cabin boy who survived the ordeal, and published in 2000.

Hemsworth will play the first mate of the Essex, who becomes a hero after the ship is attacked. The adaptation has been in the works almost since the book's publishing over a decade ago, and is now set to be produced by Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland). In the Heart of the Sea is currently being shopped to DreamWorks, among other studios.

Top Gun 2 Moving Forward? Tom Cruise Hopes So

Tom Cruise looks essentially the same as he did in 1986, though you can't say the same for Val Kilmer. Otherwise, there could be a Top Gun sequel set not too far after the events of the first film.

Yes, Cruise recently told MTV that the Top Gun sequel that has been thrown around for a while is finally starting to gain traction, and that he "want(s) to get in those jets" (though he could be talking about starting a professional football career, or maybe joining an off-Broadway production of West Side Story).

This comes after DreamWorks President Adam Goodman reported that Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Tony Scott will all be returning to their roles for Top Gun 2, and that a script is already finished. Check out our Top Gun quotes page to relive the original.

Cruise is set to star in the jukebox musical Rock of Ages on June 15. Bruckheimer, meanwhile, is producing the Armie Hammer/Johnny Depp adaptation of The Lone Ranger slated for release next year.

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows: Maximum Movie Mode Exclusive

We were honored to head out to Warner Home Video in Burbank last week to experience an exclusive look and demo of the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Movie App and Maximum Movie Mode. The feature is part of the June 12 release of the Blu-Ray combo pack that takes audiences behind the scenes of the smash film as no bonus feature ever has in the past.

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows Blu-RayThe App (available for free at iTunes) works brilliantly alongside your Blu-Ray viewing experience on the iPad and Kindle Fire and is able to control the Blu-Ray player! Movie Fanatic had the opportunity to “play” with the marvelous technological advancement to the home video viewing experience. It is especially fascinating with the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows film because of the real history of the time period and the legendary background of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his sleuth sensation. Noted Sherlock Holmes expert Leslie Klinger even consulted on the Movie App contents to give the fullest of movie watching moments an informational background unlike ever seen prior.

All are priceless additions to home video. “This is meant to enhance the user experience,” said Jonathan Gaines, executive director of special features for Warner. He stated that previously when audiences had to watch the extras on the TV screen and return to the film, it was an inefficient process. Now, by utilizing the iPad and Kindle to its fullest as a second screen, the movie watching experience is maximized. “By flipping the paradigm from second screen to first screen really freed us up to harness what the potential and the power of this technology of these devices offer.”

Robert Downey Jr. hosts the Maximum Movie Mode features as he introduces each section of the features on the iPad or Kindle. For example, we marveled as we explored the European map (still below) where the viewer can follow Holmes (Downey Jr.) and Dr. Holmes (Jude Law) as they weave their way across the continent in pursuit of the evil Moriarity (Jared Harris). As the presentation starts, Downey stated, “Maximum Movie Mode, this better be good or I could have stayed at home.”

A Game of Shadows Screen Shot

Gaines was thrilled with the star of the film serving as the feature’s narrator and guide. "When Robert agreed to do it, it was a great opportunity for us to get inside the mind of Sherlock Holmes,” Gaines said. “That’s how we approached the Maximum Movie Mode of this film.”

Normally the Blu-Ray bonus features experiences are a separate venture to be watched after the film is completed... or during. But, watching the film and the extras can take away from the fluidity of the movie watching experience. Not so with Maximum Movie Mode as we were able to interact with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows on the iPad and Kindle while simultaneously watching the film on the big (home) screen.

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows: Maximum Movie Mode Image
“This is a multi-dimensional experience as to what went on in the moviemaking process,” executive director of creative services Donnie Roche said. “For example, now you get a more in-depth look at the set dressing and everything that went into the set. You can do this at your own pace. When you’re done… boom, you’re back to the movie.”

Roache added that with Maximum Movie Mode, film fanatics can delve deeper into stills and the artistic end of the creative process that makes movie magic. “They’re storyboard comparisons, photo galleries for each scene, picture-in-picture,” he said. “This is designed to be a complete, end to end experience.”

That's My Boy Interview: Andy Samberg Breaks Out

Andy Samberg is having an emotional month as he announced he is leaving his home for seven seasons, Saturday Night Live, and his work alongside his idol -- Adam Sandler -- in That’s My Boy is premiering. Movie Fanatic caught up with the soon-to-be comic superstar to discuss his thoughts on his new beginning, the brilliance of Sandler and even hear if there will be more coming from his hilarious band Honey Island!

Andy Samberg in That's My Boy
When the script arrived for That’s My Boy, it struck Samberg on two levels. He would get to work with Sandler, the man he saw as a child on TV that made him realize there were others like him who could make a career out of being funny. But also, he had an affinity for the story. “The script came to me and I heard Adam was doing it. I thought, ‘Holy crap, if there’s ever a chance for me to play a part where I’m related to Sandler, this is it. It’s perfect.’ I’m the right age if he had had a son with his teacher at the age of 15,” Samberg said and laughed. “It’s a classic tale.”

When it comes to learning from his idol, now mentor, Samberg could keep us at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills for quite a while. “I can talk about being a fan of Adam’s for the next seven hours,” he said.

“I watched SNL since I was eight and wanted to be on it since I was eight. I remember when he came on the show. There was a lot of stuff he did that was incredible, but the moment I remember he was my guy was the easy-to-do Halloween costumes. I remember thinking, ‘You’re allowed to do this?' Comedians talk about the movie or sketch that they saw that they felt it was made just for you. His entire time on the show was that for me. Then with Happy Gilmore and all the movies after that, I was at that impressionable age. I memorized those movies. I had Billy Madison on audio cassette. I walked around town listening to it on my Walkman. If I couldn’t be in front of a TV, I wanted to be hearing Adam Sandler. I think it’s safe to say that getting to work with him is a dream come true.”

When it comes to the months-long shoot, from the sound of it, Samberg learned more than comedy lessons from Sandler, but life lessons too. “He taught me how to put rubbers on the right way. I had been doing it wrong for years and I never knew why I had so many kids,” Samberg said, laughing.

Then he gets serious and extols the many virtues of the artist formerly known as Cajun Man. “He’s not just an actor, he’s a writer and producer. To watch him have this whole team assembled, he’s so loyal to the same crew with each movie. I got to witness that and how good that is. The same way he was saying how working on SNL is like a family, his Happy Madison production team is the same way. There’s a shorthand that everyone has.”

There were rumors that Samberg was leaving SNL. Most thought it was a done deal. Many wondered why only Kristin Wiig got the big send-off. It was because Samberg hadn’t officially talked to show creator Lorne Michaels.

In the last weeks, the comic had that chat. “It’s emotional and extremely sad for me, but also felt it was the right time. It has nothing to do with anything outside of the show or a project I was moving on to. It was more that I’ve been there seven seasons,” he admitted. For one, his Emmy-winning shorts were draining. “The digital shorts were incredibly demanding to get done so often.”

That's My Boy Stars Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler
Samberg will be seen twice on film in a matter of months with That's My Boy and the Sundance darling, Celeste and Jesse Forever, written by and also starring Rashida Jones. Beyond that, the actor is letting all the changes in his life sink in. "I hope I get to keep doing movies. I'd like to make another Honey Island CD. I'm just trying to be happy," he said. "I'm still processing that I said I was leaving the show!"

The Amazing Spider-Man: New TV Spot and Clip Chronicle Spidey vs. The Lizard

$

If Sony isn't careful, there won't be anything left to show come July 13 when The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters. A new TV spot has been released along with the eleventh (yes, eleventh) clip. Luckily, The Amazing Spider-Man is 16 hours long with eight intermissions and a two-day epilogue, so the 15-or-so minutes of the film we've already seen doesn't amount to much. That's a joke. It's kind of a lot of footage.

But the latest TV spot is actually pretty cool. It focuses on Spider-Man's mission to stop The Lizard, and I'd recommend watching it even if you aren't a "watch all the promos" kinda guy or gal. Take a look at that first, followed by the clip:

Andrew Garfield stars as the titular super spider, with Emma Stone as his love interest Gwen Stacy, and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard. The Amazing Spider-Man is directed by the aptly-named Marc Webb.

Top 10 Adam Sandler Movies: Best Bodacious Buffoonery

$
0
0

Coming up with the Top 10 Movies of Adam Sandler is one difficult task. It’s like Roger Maris and his home run record-breaking moment… perhaps there should be an asterisk attached to Movie Fanatic’s latest Top 10 as a qualifier. Most Sandler movies are honestly not that great as films go, but it is hard to argue with the comic actor’s success. He is the only bankable comedian for international audiences and his box office totals domestically are equally impressive. So, in honor of the fans that have made some of Sandler’s movies blockbusters and his return to the screen with That's My Boy, we present his ten best.

10. The Waterboy
What’s not to love about Sandler’s variation on his Cajun Man SNL persona with the story of a lowly waterboy who finds his inner football star and takes his university’s team to new heights? Sandler’s knack for hiring older actors we love is present with the casting of Henry Winkler while having Kathy Bates play the mother of The Waterboy is pure genius.

Adam Sandler in The Waterboy
9. Spanglish
Sandler got to show his dramatic muscles in this drama-comedy that was, in many ways, a sad story. The actor showed he can be, with the right script and part, a romantic lead. It’s not earth-shattering, but Spanglish is a nice out-of-the-box turn for one of our favorite SNL vets.

8. Mr. Deeds
The comic chemistry between Winona Ryder and Sandler alone would put Mr. Deeds on this list. Based loosely on the 1936 film Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Sandler’s version allowed him to channel his inner New England accent (that has since become a staple). If anyone had ever said that Sandler would step into Gary Cooper’s shoes, you’d say they were insane. But, that is exactly what the actor did by updating Cooper’s 1930s hit.

7. Big Daddy
The seeds for That’s My Boy had to be laid in Big Daddy. The premise of a man-child becoming responsible for a young boy, Sandler first explored in 1999 with a whole lot of heart. The film also featured Jon Stewart in what would be one of his last film roles. His acting shortcomings are our benefit as now we have The Daily Show!

6. 50 First Dates
Drew Barrymore teamed with Sandler again after first appearing together in The Wedding Singer. In 50 First Dates, he straddled the line between his version of romance and slapstick comedy effectively. His chemistry with Barrymore is spot-on and we cannot wait for the two to reunite in the future. Sandler showed his sensitive side in the Hawaiian-set film and proved he can not only be an immature hero, but also possess the solid stature of an adult with a whole lot of heart.

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in 50 First Dates
5. Just Go With It
Sandler again headed to Hawaii for Just Go With It and had his most recent hit. This time out, he introduced the world to model turned actress Brooklyn Decker (now seen in Battleship) and brought Jennifer Aniston into his madcap world of Happy Madison productions. The premise is pure Sandler and unlike many of his films that have tried a similar formula, this time out, the execution worked.

4. Billy Madison
Sandler’s first film is still one of his best. His man-child screen persona was only beginning to take shape and what a vehicle for him to introduce that to the world! By portraying a man who discovers he needs to go back to grade school and complete all the grades up to high school graduation, the situational comedy potential was through the roof. The film also showed that the star will use old comedy friends in supporting roles heading into the future. He would single-handedly give careers to many, including Billy Madison co-star Norm MacDonald.

3. That’s My Boy
The SNL veteran’s latest is among his greatest. His first R-rated film in years allows Sandler to push the comic envelope on many levels. We don’t want to give away too much (our review premieres June 15), but the funny in this film reminds Movie Fanatic of Sandler’s stand-up and less of his forays into family films (Click anyone?).

2. The Wedding Singer
We can never sing the praises of The Wedding Singer too much. The film not only captured the heart of the 1980s, but captured audiences’ collective hearts in a surprisingly effective love story from the man most known for bodacious buffoonery. Again, his pairing with Barrymore is pure gold. They need to do another!

1. Happy Gilmore
The game of golf has always been ripe for comedy, i.e. Caddyshack, yet Happy Gilmore was pure Sandler and could never be confused for coming from any other source. His hockey player who finds the answer to his money needs by entering a golf tourney, set the standard for his fans as to what to expect from the SNL grad heading forward. Happy Gilmore quotes are still among the most popular in the comic’s history, none more popular than: “The price is wrong, Bob!”

The new TV spot for Ted is a bit NSFW, though only in the audio. And heck, it's a TV spot, so it can't be too inappropriate, right?

Ted marks Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's first foray into feature film making. MacFarlane directed, produced and co-wrote the film, in addition to lending his voice to the bear.

Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), and Giovanni Ribisi costar. Wahlberg, who got his acting start in drama, has recently become a pretty reliable comedic voice, appearing in numerous comedies including 2010's The Other Guys. Check out some The Other Guys quotes here.

Ted premieres June 29. For another look, here's the Ted red band trailer.
