It's quite frightful out there this Super Bowl weekend as the cineplex is filled with three new movies meant to cause a bit of shock and awe. To offset the fear factor exhibited by The Woman in Black, Chronicle and The Innkeepers, Universal is releasing the heartwarming true story Big Miracle. Which will you see this weekend?
The Woman in Black: Daniel Radcliffe busts out of the Harry Potter mode in this horror movie based on the stage play. Radcliffe is a young English lawyer who goes to the estate of a client of his who has passed away. He is there to get her affairs in order, only he discovers there is something seriously supernaturally wrong with the house. Although he is alone in the house, we all know Radcliffe is hardly by himself. Ciaran Hinds co-stars and brings the creepy to a whole new level.
Big Miracle: Ted Danson, Dermot Mulroney, Kristen Bell, Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski star in the “you won’t believe it’s a true story” film Big Miracle. The tale follows three whales that got stuck beneath the ice near Barrow, Alaska. The film is simultaneously a race-against-time thriller, family movie, romance and touching comedy that takes audiences back to a time where the whole world united to save three rather large creatures. Check out our Big Miracle review for more.
Chronicle: One of the most original films Movie Fanatic has seen in some time, Chronicle chills us to the bone. Filmmaker Josh Trank has taken the found footage sub-genre of movies and given it new life. Three Seattle teens awake to discover they have superpowers. In a terrific stroke of innovation, Trank (who also wrote the film) has the kids enjoy their new-found power by pranking people and generally having fun. It’s all a game until one of the three takes a seriously dark turn. My Chronicle review delves deeper into why this is a film that will be remembered for some time.
The Innkeepers: Ti West wrote and directed this weekend’s second haunted house movie. The Innkeepers follows Sara Paxton and Pat Healy. They play the establishment's weekend workers in the final days of the hotel’s existence before it closes for good. Determined to prove that the Inn is haunted, the duo document everything in hopes to make it big in the paranormal world. What they find will change them forever.
