Three new films land in theaters this weekend and one older film that is using The Force via its 3D upgrade. George Lucas has taken the Anakin Skywalker journey to the Dark Side and put it in three dimensions as The Phantom Menace arrives at the movie house with a snazzy new look. Meanwhile, The Vow hopes to woo lovers in a pre-Valentine’s Day mood. Denzel Washington rocks the bad guy in Safe House and Dwayne Johnson heads to The Mysterious Island in Journey 2.
Safe House: Washington rivets as a rogue CIA agent who comes in from the cold one fateful day in Johannesburg, South Africa. Quickly rushed to Ryan Reynolds’ Safe House, it is clear that getting this man to justice in America will be one difficult task as the two escape ambush after attack. Movie Fanatic has high hopes at the box office for this sleek thriller, as we state in our Safe House review.
Journey 2 The Mysterious Island: Josh Hutcherson is back as Sean, reprising his role from Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brendan Fraser is gone and Dwayne Johnson has replaced him as the male lead as Sean heads out on another adventure. This time out they are searching for Jules Verne’s iconic island and enlist the help of helicopter pilot Luis Guzman and his daughter, played by Vanessa Hudgens. Is the film worth the Journey? The Vow: Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams are newlyweds who, when McAdams’ Paige awakes in the hospital after a car accident, deal with her memory loss. Specifically, she cannot remember anything about her entire relationship with Tatum’s Leo. The Vow is a perfect Valentine’s Day movie and is the rare romance that doesn’t fall into the stereotypical traps. Check out our The Vow review for more on this surprising film.
Star Wars Episode One The Phantom Menace: Lucas is planning to release his entire six-part Star Wars series in theaters in 3D. Of course Episode One will be first and The Phantom Menace arrives on screens today with the hopes that fans of the series will return to the theaters to see it once again on the big screen. Considering many believe the film to be the worst of the series, the jury is out as to whether this latest move by Lucas will pay off.
