Will The Hunger Games make it four weeks in a row topping the box office or will one of the three new movies arriving this weekend knock it off? There’s a horror movie that may be the best in some time, The Three Stooges get updated and Guy Pearce establishes himself as an action star to be reckoned with in Lockout.
The Cabin in the Woods: Joss Whedon and Dan Gordon have combined forces to create a masterwork. The horror film that is so much more stars Chris Hemsworth as the leader of a group of friends who head out for a weekend at the titular cabin. To say things are not what they seem is not only an understatement, but makes the cinematic complexity of this film too simplified. Be sure to check out our raving The Cabin in the Woods review.
The Three Stooges: The idea of having a new set of Stooges for a whole new generation may be bothersome to many fans of the comic trio. Yet with the Farrelly brothers handling the directing and three actors led by Sean Hayes who utterly nail the larger-than-life characters that they were -- and as we say in our The Three Stooges review -- fans may be surprised.
Lockout: Pearce and Maggie Grace star in a futuristic thriller that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are laughs aplenty, but through and through, this film is a chance for Pearce to shine. He commands the audience’s attention in every frame of the movie. Toss in the fact that it is from the mind of Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element) and what is produced is a popcorn movie to usher in the popcorn movie season that is summer.
