Will Dark Shadows be able to knock The Avengers from atop the box office charts? That is the big question this weekend in Hollywood as the Tim Burton and Johnny Depp film lands on screens across the land. We’re thinking the Marvel Studios superheroes will still triumph, but Dark Shadows will make a good run at it. A few smaller films also open this weekend and we’ve got your inside look at what’s new at the multiplex this Mother’s Day weekend.
Dark Shadows: Depp and Burton team up for their eighth film together. This time out they are bringing the cult TV show they both adored as kids to the big screen. Depp is a vampire, yes, but he is a family man above all else. After being buried alive for two centuries, he emerges in 1972 and seeks to restore his family name to greatness. As we stated in our Dark Shadows review, Burton has cast brilliantly with Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonny Lee Miller and Eva Green stealing scenes from Depp left and right.
God Bless America: Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed this social commentary that is viciously funny. Joel Murray and Tara Lynne Barr star as a couple of disillusioned folks who take changing America quite seriously. Seems when someone is doing something that is not quite right, they get a bullet to the head. Goldthwait has crafted a gem, as we write in our God Bless America review.
Girl in Progress: Eva Mendes stars as a single mother trying her best to raise her thirteen-year-old daughter (Cierra Ramirez). Mendes is meant to be the star of the film, but it is the young actress who steals the show. A perfect film for Mother’s Day as it chronicles the complicated, yet impeccably rewarding, relationship that is mothers and daughters. Check out our Girl in Progress review for more.
