Joaquin Phoenix's character in the new film The Master feels the same way about his past violence as I do about the short-lived ABC sitcom Work It: "I don't remember an episode."
The trailer for The Master, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, has been released.
The Master marks Anderson's first film since the 2008 Best Picture-nominated film, There Will Be Blood (browse some There Will Be Blood quotes here). It also marks a return of sorts for Phoenix, who, apart from the odd publicity stunt that was the mockumentary I'm Still Here, has not been in any recent movies since 2008's Two Lovers. It looks as though Phoenix's role as a crazy version of himself may have prepared him for this role in The Master.
One wouldn't know it from the trailer, but the film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman (Moneyball) as the leader of a religious organization that springs up after World War II. Though the plot is reminiscent of the birth of Scientology, any connection to L. Ron Hubbard has been denied. Phoenix plays Hoffman's protege in the film, which will be released on October 12.
