Roland Emmerich is said to be in talks to direct a film loosely based on the classic video game Asteroids. Atari has wanted to get its film version of the game made for quite some time and Universal currently owns the rights to it.
Vulture is reporting that Emmerich has been offered the job to direct the film with a script by Matt Lopez (Bedtime Stories, The Sorcerer's Apprentice).

It sounds like the film will be based very loosely on the video game and according to Vulture will be more about Aliens winning the war with humans after the destruction of earth.
Not much information yet, just a whole lot of hearsay, but we'll keep you posted as this start to develop even more.
