The sci-fi epic that everyone has waited for has finally arrived this weekend: Prometheus. Ridley Scott’s first foray into the science fiction world since Blade Runner is joined at the movie houses across the country by the return of the Madagascar gang for a third film as well as Robert Pattinson breaking out of the Twilight mold in Bel Ami. The new “It Girl” of independent film also has a new flick out, Lola Versus. There’s something for everyone this second weekend of June.
Prometheus: The “is it a prequel to Alien or not” discussion is over: Scott’s latest film exists in the same world, and gives fans of the sci-fi classic much more to chew on. The cast is superb, especially Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace. It is the sci-fi epic we’ve been waiting for since, well, Blade Runner. Check out our Prometheus review for more.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted: The funny foursome from the Central Park Zoo leave Africa for the greener pastures of the European continent in this third film in the Madagascar series. The franchise adds three new characters, voiced by Martin Short, Bryan Cranston and Jessica Chastain -- all outstanding additions. As we state in our Madagascar 3 review, the stars of this franchise are still truly Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett-Smith, David Schwimmer and Chris Rock.
Bel Ami: Pattinson is unbelievably good in the Parisian period piece that allows the actor to truly show his range. He plays Georges Duroy, the son of a poor farmer who has such disdain for his upbringing, he will do anything to climb out of his social class. And that means using a trio of married women to climb the ladder of importance in 1890s Paris. For more on the film, read our Bel Ami review.
Lola Versus: Greta Gerwig continues her independent-movie-darling streak after Damsels in Distress with this film about a 29-year-old and her tumultuous year before she turns 30. It’s a good enough film, but as explored in our Lola Versus review, Gerwig deserves better.
