Four new films arrive this weekend and they could not be more different. Pixar brings out the annual warmer month animated classic with Brave, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley are Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Woody Allen returns to Europe after last summer’s hit Midnight in Paris with To Rome with Love and our sixteenth president unleashes his inner vampire slayer in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: Benjamin Walker is the titular leader who saved the Union as shown first in Seth Grahame-Smith’s book and now Timur Bekmambetov’s latest undead-centered film. After Day Walker and Night Walker, the director has found his next vampire film in the most unlikely of places. Brave: Pixar releases their latest film and makes history in the process by having their first female lead. Merida is a Scottish princess living in the medieval Highlands. She is supposed to marry and carry on her parents’ (the king and queen) legacy as heir to the throne. Only thing is she doesn’t want her fate… or does she? The film takes an unexpected, very Disney-like turn… as explained in our Brave review.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World: A romantic comedy that is set to the backdrop of the impending extinction of the human race seems like the most unlikely of storylines to find film success. To Rome with Love: Allen has been filming in Europe quite a lot of late. From Match Point to Midnight in Paris, the legendary filmmaker has found increasing success with each stop along his European tour. His latest lands his superstar ensemble cast (Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg) in Rome. Those hoping for a repeat of the magic that was Allen’s last film will be disappointed. But, as pointed out in our To Rome with Love review, the iconic storyteller still has a lot of magic in his bag of cinematic tricks.
