It is difficult to care about ticket sales given the tragedy that occurred in Aurora, Colorado early this morning. But, it is precisely our job to report movie news, and here's a big piece of movie news: Warner Bros. reports that The Dark Knight Rises has earned $27 million in ticket sales from midnight screenings alone.
The number puts TDKR far ahead of The Avengers, which earned $18.4 million at its midnight opening.
The record for midnight take-ins belongs to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2, which grossed a whopping $43.5 million.
Can The Dark Knight Rises surpass the total gross of The Avengers? It's difficult to say, especially given how the Aurora shooting may taint moviegoers' experience over the weekend and beyond.
Selina Kyle, Bruce Wayne, Bane, and The Dark Knight Rises are certainly off to a good start, though.
