There is only one film opening nationally this week, so our latest weekend movie preview is naturally all about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey: The first book that introduced the world to Middle Earth was J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson returns to the franchise that won him a Best Picture and Best Director Oscar and turns Tolkien's origins story into a new trilogy.
The first to arrive is An Unexpected Journey and it finds us meeting our hero Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he is recruited by Gandalf (Ian McKellen) for an adventure where they seek to battle an evil dragon who has taken over the homeland of the world's dwarves.
As we state in our The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review, the film is a bit long, but worth it overall and is a quite satisfying return to Middle Earth.
Although there is only one film landing in theaters on December 14, merely a few days away on December 19 we get the hilarious and heartfelt The Guilt Trip with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand as well as the early award season leader, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. Oh, and there's another Pixar classic given the 3D update... Monster's Inc!
And then days after that, a cavalcade of movie awesomeness lands with The Impossible, Jack Reacher, This Is 40 and the finally premiering On the Road.
Then, Hollywood's Christmas presents abound with December 25 releases Django Unchained, Les Miserables and Parental Guidance.
