Summer blockbuster season is officially upon us, as Star Trek Into Darkness displaces another major action film, Iron Man 3, in this weekend's box office. Trek grossed $70.56 million dollars in the three day period, which combined with its Thursday opening numbers equals a total of $84.1 million.
Iron Man 3 dropped to second place, taking in $35.18 million. The first film of Marvel Phase 2 has earned $337 million domestically, and $1.07 billion worldwide.
The Great Gatsby continues its less-than-stellar showing, taking in $23.4 million and finishing in third place. Baz Luhrmann's F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation has grossed $90.16 million in its first two weeks in theaters.
Rounding out the Top 5 is Pain and Gain and The Croods. The two films earned $3.1 million and $2.7 million, respectively.
