James Cameron Announces Avatar Sequel Will Be First of Three

When James Cameron speaks, the film world listens. So, when he announced today that his Avatar sequel that he is currently filming will actually be the first of three sequels, we at Movie Fanatic thought we felt the Earth shake down the street from us at the 20th Century Fox lot.

Initially, Cameron was making two sequels to Avatar. But, once he got into the process of making the movie, the idea hit him and his team for a third movie.

The three Avatar sequels will be filmed one right after the other, so we know what Cameron will be doing for the next several years! Look for the first sequel to arrive in December 2016 and each following a year to the month after.

Cameron has contracted screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Shane Salerno (Savages) and Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) to hunker down and pen the three scripts for the trifecta of Avatar sequels.

Cameron, in a statement released by Fox, maintains he is continuing the mission he began with the first Avatar.

“Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen,” he said.

“And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh -- all writers I've long admired - to join me in completing the films' screenplays."
