The world is still chatting up whether or not the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel is a good or bad thing. Some are calling it the end of comic book movies as we know it. Others, such as former Bat actors and Joss Whedon, believe it is an incredibly genius stroke of casting.
Now, someone who knows Affleck well is adding his two cents and it is none other than his lifelong buddy Matt Damon. The actor was promoting his movie Elysium in India when a local publication asked him about the hubbub and, some say predictably and others might say correctly, Damon thinks Affleck will be one bombastically good Batman.
“I think it will be great. It will be terrific,” Damon said. “I know there are a lot of people grousing on the internet. I just think it’s kind of funny. You know, he’s not playing King Lear. It’s Batman!”
Damon not only knows Affleck personally, but professionally and believes that he has the talents to make people forget they ever questioned his casting as Batman in Batman vs. Superman.
“[It is] certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw Argo or The Town, and all the work he’s been doing lately -- it’s way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people. Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that.”
Then, there’s that internet rumor that just because Affleck is Batman, that it means the Elysium star will be Robin. Damon seems to laugh at the suggestion. “I am a little older than Ben. I never saw Robin as older than Batman,” Damon added. “But it’s safe to say I won’t be Robin.”
