David Yates had said that after directing the last four Harry Potter films -- including the astounding Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, he would step back and make a movie that was a little smaller in scope. Guess he changed his mind. Yates announced that he was ready to tackle another British pop culture icon and bring Dr. Who to the big screen.

Matt Smith is Dr. Who
Matt Smith currently portrays the lead in Dr. Who in the wildly popular BBC series, but chances are slim that he would inhabit the role on the big screen.

According to Yates, his film will be a whole new Who. “[The show] needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena," Yates told Variety. "We're going to spend two to three years to get it right."

So, guess that means we’ll have to wait awhile for a big screen Dr. Who. The show is one of the longest running in TV history. Audiences first caught a glimpse of the sci-fi hero in 1963 and Smith is the eleventh performer to play the Time Lord.
