The Golden Globes began with Johnny Depp strolling across the stage to present the intro to Hugo, but soon after, the awards started pouring in and the first went to Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners.
The winners of the night were pretty even. The Help, The Artist, The Descendants and Hugo proved that they are early Oscar leaders. When Martin Scorsese took home the Best Director award, Hugo’s chances for Oscar nominations shot through the roof. Octavia Spencer won for Best Supporting Actress for The Help and aided that film’s opportunities for Oscar gold.
But, The Artist’s awards for Best Score, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Picture kept that film in the driver’s seat to be the early Oscar favorite. George Clooney also continued to prove he is the man to beat for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars and with his film’s win of Best Picture, the Oscar race for Best Picture is only getting hotter.
More on what the Golden Globes winners mean to the Oscar race in the coming days.
One of the night’s highlights has to be the awarding of the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Morgan Freeman. He received the golden trophy from Sidney Poitier and Helen Mirren. His speech was sincere, powerful and reminds us why he is a national treasure.
