Roland Emmerich is said to be in talks to direct a film loosely based on the classic video game Asteroids.  Atari has wanted to get its film version of the game made for quite some time and Universal currently owns the rights to it.

Vulture is reporting that Emmerich has been offered the job to direct the film with a script by Matt Lopez (Bedtime Stories, The Sorcerer's Apprentice).

Director Roland Emmerich

It sounds like the film will be based very loosely on the video game and according to Vulture will be more about Aliens winning the war with humans after the destruction of earth.

Not much information yet, just a whole lot of hearsay, but we'll keep you posted as this start to develop even more.

The film centers on two best friends who share everything together from college to the time when they both got married.  Years later, their kids are away at college and start a relationship -- their parents have no idea.   Their friendship is tested when the daughter of Vaughn's character gets pregnant.

Interesting premise.  This could be a really hilarious film -- and with these two actors, it's bound to be a huge hit!

Bateman is currently starring in two films this summer, Horrible Bosses which comes out on July 8 and The Change-Up, hitting theaters on August 5.

Fright Night is being remade! This time starring Colin Farrell as the frightening vampire.

A remake of the 1985 film, Fright Night follows Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) who believes his neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell) is a vampire.  He also believes Jerry is responsible for a string of deaths hitting the neighborhood.  No one believes him, so he asks a TV host to help take down Jerry and prove he is right.

The trailer actually looks pretty creepy.  Check it out!

Lucky Trailer: Colin Hanks Wins Lottery, Marries Crush, Kills Women

What a strange looking, but completely interesting comedy.  It's a serial killer - comedy?  You don't usually see those two things go together, but if this film is any indication, it just might work.

Colin Hanks, like his father Tom, usually plays the good guy, so it's great to see him in a completely different role.

This is not a serious murder-drama, but a fun, hesity looking film that happens to be about a millionaire serial killer.

How creepy is it that this guy married a woman and then proceeds to kill other women who look like her.

It's so twisted, you can't help but laugh -- even though you know you shouldn't.

Can you say American Psycho?  Lucky is set to hit theaters on July 15, 2011.

It also stars Ari Graynor, Ann-Margret, Jeffrey Tambor and Elizabeth Uhl.

Check out the trailer below to see what I mean:

MGM Returns to Animated Features with Punk Farms

MGM is still coming back from declaring bankruptcy a couple years ago and Variety is reporting that the studio is hoping to get back into animation with an adapation of Jarrett Krosoczka's children's book Punk Farm.

The studio hasn't done animated since the sleeper hit All Dogs Go to Heaven back in 1989 -- a film that is still beloved today.

Punk Farm Children's Book

Punk Farm follows five barnyard animals who form an underground rock band. After Farmer Joe heads to bed, Cow, Goat, Pig, Sheep, and Chicken transform themselves into a rock band called Punk Farm.  Animals line up around the entire barn to buy tickets and enjoy a show that includes the hit "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."

David Silverman (The Simpson Movie writer) will direct the film and Jim Hecht (Ice Age: The Meltdown) has written the script.

It will be interesting to see how MGM does with an animated feature after so many years.

Columbia Pictures To Make Movie Based on Risk Board Game?

Board game movies are all the rage.  We're still waiting to hear more about Peter Berg's adaptation of Battleship that's set to hit theaters in 2012 and now we're hearing about a new film about a board game popping up.

Columbia Pictures has bought the rights to turn the Hasbro game Risk into a feature film.

Risk Board Game

Apparently John Hlavin (Underworld: New Dawn) will pen the script for the big screen adaptation.  It will be interesting to see what kind of story comes out of the strategy game - it's so open ended.

According to Risky Biz, the story will take place in modern day and will be set all around the world -- similar to the game, which places armies all around the world to invade other players territories.  The ultimate goal is to control the whole world.

More to come...

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer Movie Review: Great For Both Kids and Adults

$

0

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is based off the children's series by Megan McDonald and they are extremely popular among young girls.  Now Judy Moody is on screen in real-sized technicolor and she is winning over hearts everywhere.

If you aren't familiar with the book series, it's probably because you don't have a young girl in your house.  But you're not alone.  I hadn't read any of the books before seeing this film and it doesn't matter.  It's fun, vibrant, energetic, and full of life.

Australian newcomer Jordana Beatty plays the spunky, fun-loving Judy Moody with great spirit and amazing energy.  Sometimes a little too much energy!  Doesn't she ever get tired?

Jordana Beatty is Judy Moody

The books mainly take place during school, but this feature film finds Judy out of the classroom and trying to have the best summer ever.

She soon learns that it might be a lot harder than she had originally planned.  Her two best friends are heading off to fun summer adventures of their own, leaving her behind.  To make matters worse, her parents are going to Los Angeles for the summer and leaving her and her brother Stink at home with their Aunt Opal, whom they've never met.  Things are really low for Judy.

It takes a while for Judy to realize that fun is what you make of it.  She is so consumed with having what she thinks is a fun summer that she forgets to enjoy the moment.  She had a tightrope walking contest, gets a puke snow cone in the face, and searches for big foot.  Sounds pretty interesting.

Heather Graham as Aunt Opal in Judy Moody

Heather Graham gets in touch with her younger side again, playing the vivacious and artistic Aunt Opal with as much charisma and energy as all the young kids around her.  She is a great match for her younger co-star Jordana and the two have an amazing chemistry on screen.

Preston Bailey plays Judy's younger brother Stink who is focused on finding Big Foot - he has been spotted, so he must exist.  He plays the annoying younger brother with amazing comic timing. Bailey is a great young actor and is hilarious in the film.  He delivers his lines with such a funny sarcasm, you can't help but laugh at what he's saying.  He's the life of the part when Judy is sulking about her latest adventures gone array.

Jaleel White (Family Matters) also makes an appearance in the film as the lovable Mr. Todd.  He's the teacher every kid would ever dream of having in fifth grade.  He does a great job connecting with the kids and plays a pretty integral part in their summer fun.

Jaleel White Plays Mr. Todd in Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer

This isn't just a kids film, adults will enjoy the fun of it as well.  Everyone can relate to their summer vacation, desperately trying to find things to do.  Adults will love the fun-loving spirit of the film, but still be able to relate to the nostalgic nature of a great summer vacation.

Planet of the Apes Rules Box Office for Second Straight Week

There may have been four new films for all kinds of audiences this weekend, but none could hold back the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The Apes reboot spent its second weekend in a row at the top of the box office charts.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Pic

While Rise of the Planet of the Apes earned $27.5 million in its second week of release, the box office runner-up also did quite well for itself. The Help, the first of the weekend’s new movies, landed in second place with an impressive $25.5 million. Add in the film’s showings before the weekend (it opened Wednesday, August 10) and the film based on the book by Kathryn Stockett earned a total of $35.4 million since its debut.

Final Destination 5 rode a wave of 3D ticket sales and came in third with $18.4 million. Just to compare, the fourth film in the franchise, also in 3D, took in $27.4 million when it opened in 2009.

The Smurfs continued its surprising run landing in fourth, while the only other new movie to be released this weekend to land in the top five was the Jesse Eisenberg starring 30 Minutes or Less.

Landing nowhere on the top 10 was the widely anticipated Glee trip to the big screen: Glee: The 3D Concert Movie. Sadly for Gleeks everywhere, it only made $5.7 million despite having the benefit of higher ticket prices from its 3D format.

Box office top 10:

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, $27.5 million
2. The Help, $25.5 million
3. Final Destination 5, $18.4 million
4. The Smurfs, $13.5 million
5. 30 Minutes or Less, $13 million
6. Cowboys and Aliens, $7.6 million
7. Captain America, $7.1 million
8. Crazy, Stupid, Love, $6.9 million
9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, $6.86 million
10. The Change-Up, $6.2 million

Mike Myers Close to Deal for Austin Powers 4: Yeah Baby!

$

Is Mike Myers ready to don the Austin Powers glasses and bad teeth again? Yeah baby, according to sources close to the franchise.

Mike Myers is Austin Powers

Myers has not played Austin Powers since the film’s last foray in 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember. The comedy franchise has banked over $676 million at the global box office since Myers first asked “Do I make you horny, baby?” in 1997.

The deal is far from done, and there is no script, director or producer in place. But given Myers' box office track record of the last decade and the need for the actor to score another hit, consider this a rumor that should ring true.

Myers was last seen in a tiny role in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, and of course he has starred in the Shrek series in animated form. His last several solo starring vehicles flopped including 2008’s The Love Guru -- which took in only $40.8 million internationally.

If the Austin Powers deal gets done, look for Myers to not only star, but also produce and write the screenplay about the character that was a hybrid of roles his late father adored -- James Bond and Inspector Clouseau.

Lone Ranger Production Shut Down by Disney

Johnny Depp had the role he had dreamed of playing go up in smoke as Disney has announced it has shut down production of The Lone Ranger.

Johnny Depp at Pirates Premiere

Depp denied a film is a headline hardly seen. But that is exactly what has happened as news has broke that Disney has closed the doors on the filming of the Lone Ranger property.

The Lone Ranger was set to be a big budget update of the legendary pop culture stalwart starring The Social Network star Armie Hammer as the Ranger and Depp as his trusty sidekick Tonto.

No reason has been given as of yet from the studio as to why The Lone Ranger will not be allowed to extol his Old West justice onscreen with Depp and Hammer. Frequent Depp collaborator, director Gore Verbinski, was set to direct the picture after the duo scored a hit with the animated hit Rango earlier this year.

Could this be part of a continuing feud between Verbinski and Disney? The director famously clashed with Disney brass over the filming of the third Pirates of the Caribbean films (he directed the first three of those Depp starring smashes).

The Lone Ranger is not a dead project -- far from it, in fact. In the end, Movie Fanatic believes this is a budgetary bump in the road. Verbinski sought a $250 million budget while the studio sought one closer to the $200 million mark.

Like the classic 1949 TV series The Lone Ranger used to say: Stay tuned.

World War Z Plot Could Upset Fans

Page-to-screen adaptations are difficult. Even when they are done well, there will still be millions of book fans not pleased with what was left out or changed from their favorite novel. Such could be the case with the Brad Pitt starring World War Z.

Brad Pitt on World War Z Set

As Movie Fanatic reported last week, World War Z has a release date. That surely must have thrilled fans of the book by Max Brooks, but this week’s news, may not be in the good news department.

The novel is set in the time after a full fledged world takeover by zombies as a U.N. official (Pitt) crosses the globe gathering first-hand accounts of how the undead overtook mankind.

Now the film version’s synopsis has been released and you will note a different take on the zombie apocalypse storyline. The movie will be about a U.N. worker who races against time traveling the world in an effort to stop an attack of zombies that could destroy humanity once and for all.

Notice the big change? “An effort to stop an attack of zombies” are the operative words. In the novel, Pitt’s character goes on his global trek after zombies have taken over. His journey was never about stopping the epidemic, it was chronicling it. Looks like in the film, Pitt will be on a mission to prevent it from happening in the first place.

So, what do the fans think? Let us know!

These clips do nothing in terms of giving away plot; only feed the fire of the fans who can’t seem to get enough Dark Knight news.

Colin Farrell Shows His Fangs in Fright Night: The Movie Fanatic Interview

$

Colin Farrell truly sank his teeth into his latest role. Considering Farrell is playing the vampire Jerry in the remake of Fright Night, that is a good thing on so many levels.

Colin Farrell in Fright Night

The Irish actor recently sat down to discuss bringing a 1980s favorite back to life in the new millennia and how, in so many ways, Jerry’s Las Vegas suburban vampire was unlike any role he has ever tackled.

Fresh from his scene-stealing role in Horrible Bosses, Farrell is having quite a summer. He kills it in Fright Night as he did going head-to-head in the comedy department with Jason Sudeikis in Bosses.

Movie Fanatic: Were movie vampires something you were a fan of coming up?

Colin Farrell: The first Fright Night, I loved it. The Lost Boys, Near Dark, Interview with a Vampire and the many incarnations of Dracula like Coppola’s Dracula with Gary Oldman -- they were all in my collective imagination and informed, in some way, what I did with Jerry. There were so many vampire films I saw as a kid.

Movie Fanatic: How did wearing fake teeth, black contacts and prosthetics affect your performance? Did it help or hinder?

Colin Farrell: It really helped my performance [laughs]. It really did help. I’m a sucker for all things practical, I really am. It’s very powerful when you put something over your face and you just have your eyes to work with. There was some CGI done on Fright Night, but any time the practical make-up was on, it really does help me. It’s kind of like mask work as well. It kind of liberates you, in a really scary way as well. I’m doing a film now (the Total Recall remake) and there’s a lot of green screen in it, but the green screen is 40 yards away in the background to create this world of incredible grandiosity and detail. But, the world I’m in, 40 yards in front of it, is a practical set that’s been built by amazing craftsmen. It’s not like I’m working with a tennis ball as Jar Jar Binks or anything [laughs].

Colin Farrell Stars in Fright Night

Movie Fanatic: What a summer you’re having with Horrible Bosses and now Fright Night. How was it for you as a performer going from one to the other?

Colin Farrell: They were so extremely different from who I am. It was fun. Both were flick-a-switch characters. It was like there were these shadows created and it was step into the shadow and out of it and go home. I didn’t end up bringing the work home because there wasn’t as much emotional resonance. The parts that are much more dramatic are the parts that tend to echo into the evening and night and into your sleep. Horrible Bosses was only a five-day shoot. I wanted to mix it up. So it was time to go have a laugh with both these films..

Movie Fanatic: Was it difficult to find the character of Jerry for you in relation to other parts you have played?

Fright Night picture

Colin Farrell: Yeah, I was trying to imagine a world where you are completely severed from your basic human virtues and characteristics like fear, remorse, compassion, hope, love. All those ideas were things that Jerry understood objectively, having been a human once. Being an observer of human behavior over a matter of centuries, it really was committing to the idea that this was a vampire who had no human feelings at all. If anything, he had disdain for human beings. Inevitably, that brings him down. In some ways it was liberating to play.

Opening February 3, 2012, The Woman in Black is the first film audiences will see of Radcliffe's since the doors of Hogwarts burned down in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 -- although he has been on Broadway scoring major critical acclaim for his role in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
