Hitchcock: Sacha Gervasi Dishes Iconic Director

Sacha Gervasi, like everyone in the cinematic world, is heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock. Now, since he directed Hitchcock, Gervasi tells us in our exclusive interview, he is as mystified by the man as ever. “He’s so enigmatic and yet, he’s still mysterious,” Gervasi said.

Anthony Hopkins is Hitchcock
“We still don’t really know about Alfred Hitchcock. We have a sense, but there are so many different sides to him that you get a sense that he’s a study in contrasts. I think the audience is well aware of his obsessions and there was certainly something dark and mysterious lurking there. That mystery is still there. People exist in the popular imagination because they’re iconic. His work is iconic and you still can’t work him out.”

As seen in the Hitchcock trailer, the story follows the director’s making of his classic and most popular film, Psycho. Hitch, as people called him, had just come off his greatest success with the thriller North by Northwest. Making Psycho his next film was a highly controversial decision and he banked his future on it by mortgaging his house to finance the film when no one else would.

We state in our Hitchcock review that the film is really a love story at its heart about a husband and wife who have found, after decades together, they simply cannot live without the other. It is discovered in the film that Alma was, in fact, his greatest muse.

“We made a bold choice. We wanted to show a relationship story while making Psycho. That’s the untold story. He’s a genius and all the things we know to be true about Hitchcock had all been covered in documentaries and books,” Gervasi said.

“What we don’t know is that his greatest collaborator was his wife Alma. To me, it was about telling a story I didn’t know myself and making a movie that I would pay to see. That relationship was really key because with every great artist, there’s often someone lurking in the shadows who helps them out. She was a brilliant artist in her own right. Hitch wouldn’t have been Hitch without her.”

Sacha Gervasi Anthony Hopkins Hitchcock
One cannot talk about Hitchcock without highlighting the performances of its leads, Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. “It was astounding to be directing those two,” Gervasi admitted.

The first time feature director allowed himself one second of awe, before diving into the work.

“I did have a moment in rehearsal where I went, ‘Oh, my God. It’s Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren looking to me.’ It was fantastic. It was surreal. I’ve grown up watching them on stage and screen and then to see them work with me… was fantastic.”

Even though this is a film about two longtime loves collaborating on a movie about a serial killer who was trying to literally become his mother, it was impossible to ignore the genius of the man who wielded a camera like no other.

“When I took this on, I was focused on the relationships. But, clearly since one of the people in the relationship was Alfred Hitchcock, there was going to be so many things that you would pick up. Anyone involved in the movie in any capacity has been influenced inadvertently or directly by him,” Gervasi said.

The filmmaker even sprinkled Hitchcock-specific shots throughout the film that chronicled the making of Psycho.

“I felt we wanted to publicly pay tribute to him in our own specific way. We put eight Hitchcock references in the movie that were things that Hitchcock fans will know. The obvious one was the opening shot when you come down in the rain over the umbrellas. There were loving tributes to him throughout.”

If it seems that Gervasi had the time of his life on the set of Hitchcock, that would be a safe assumption. "It was a joyous experience. You’re getting paid to make stuff up,” he said and laughed.

The key was having an immensely talented cast and crew around him that made the job easier. “All my first choices I got in every role, and similarly with the crew. It was the best of the best. When you have people of that caliber around you, you are able to rely on their experience -- it frees you up. We were able to focus on creating this era for people when you’re taking the audience back in time and it’s really entertaining -- and entertaining for us too.”

As anyone who appreciates Hitchcock’s work is most likely someone who appreciates the history of Hollywood in general, building sets that were painstaking replicas of a Golden Age of cinema was a moment to marvel for the cast and crew.

Helen Mirren Scarlett Johansson Hitchcock
“With meticulous detail, we reconstructed the sets. We constructed what it was like at Paramount at that time and we were lucky to be able to shoot on the actual locations,” Gervasi said. “It was a rare glimpse into the world that is so familiar to us through books, magazines and old movies. We were able to recreate it. It was a thrill to step on the set and do that. It was a rare treat.”

The Hobbit Review: An Unexpected Gem

Sure, Guillermo del Toro would have been a fair choice to replace Peter Jackson in the telling of the beginnings of the J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of the Rings world with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. But, since Jackson decided he'd undertake the challenge after much thought, fans of the series and film fanatics alike should exalt.

Martin Freeman is Bilbo in The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey
Introduced in the firstThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey clip, our story follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins that he hinted at in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The wizard, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, was clearly deeply enamored with the Baggins family, as seen in that first film. We learn the origins of that admiration in the first of the new Middle Earth trilogy.

We meet Bilbo as a young man, impeccably played by Martin Freeman. He is living a simple life, and one he adores in the Shire. When Gandalf appears and attempts to take him on an adventure, the resistance is strong, especially when dwarf after dwarf appears at his door and begins to decimate his pantry of wine, lager and food. Gandalf does nothing except let them ransack Bilbo's house while hoping that their troubles will influence his new Hobbit friend. It seems that Smaug the Golden, a fierce dragon, has taken over the dwarfs' mountain home and is unrelenting in his effort to keep them away from their birthright land.

Even though he hears their tragic story, Bilbo is not fazed. Clearly there would be no adventure if he didn't change his mind, and it is glorious how Jackson plays that deeply emotional decision out.

Those expecting a repeat of the weight of The Lord of the Rings story will be deeply disappointed. Tolkien's The Hobbit is meant as a children's tale and significantly more playful... yet don't get us wrong, there still is adrenaline-pumping action to spare in Jackson's latest epic. Audiences get a glimpse into characters from the first trilogy in The Hobbit, but you won't find Movie Fanatic spilling those secrets. Judging by the many stills and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey trailer, we clearly know that Cate Blanchett has returned -- as has Hugo Weaving. So, yes, there are elves. But, how they weave into the story is not what one would expect... at least in this first chapter!

Andy Serkis as Gollum in The Hobbit
The sequence where we re-meet Gollum (Andy Serkis) is honestly the most treasured of the film. The stop-motion is top notch and his appearance is as it should be: Still evil-looking, but clearly 60 years younger. His interactions with Bilbo, without giving away anything, are short... but astounding.

Jackson shot The Hobbit with a 48 frames-per-second rate and there has been much discussion about the effectiveness or lack of effectiveness of that endeavor. We saw the film in 3D and in 48 fps and can say that it does take some adjustment. It will not, or should not, make you sick as some have reported. But what it does do is bring Middle Earth to life as never seen before. The feel of the vast landscape reminds us of witnessing a nature show on a hi-def television. Now, some film purists may scoff at that idea. It does work, but it comes down to a matter of taste. The film is available in 24 fps and in 2D -- it simply is up to the viewer how to take in Jackson's latest masterpiece.

The Hobbit does feel a little long -- especially considering this is the first part of a trilogy that is based on a single book -- versus The Lord of the Rings' three-part novel. Knowing the story (this writer adores the novel The Hobbit even more than The Lord of the Rings), there is still much to tell -- definitely two more movies' worth. However, this first film still clocks in on the longer side.

As a film, it is epic. The vast landscape, the tale of right standing up against wrong and the action sequences all recall the magic of the first trilogy. It must be stated in our The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review, that this is a vastly different story than Lord of the Rings, and therefore audiences should not enter the theater expecting a new tale featuring familiar characters in the same emotional peaks and valleys as before.

The movie stands on its own and is powerful within its own right.

One of the greatest characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's "legendarium" is Gollum. The "small, slimy creature" as he is described by Tolkien, has provided some of the most entertaining moments in film over the last decade.

Now, Gollum is back in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In honor of the films release tonight at Midnight, we've decided to go back through some of our favorite Gollum quotes through the Lord of the Rings franchise. Check them out below, and tell us some of your favorite in the comments section!

Top 10 Franchise Movies of 2012: Superheroes or Aliens Tops?

$

As franchises become more of the norm in Hollywood, 2012 proved to be a blockbuster year in terms of box office and quality for movie series. It seems like every other week a new sequel or series made its debut, most notably with The Twilight Saga closing with Breaking Dawn Part 2, and The Dark Knight Rises ending Christopher Nolan’s chapter of the Batman story. As we continue our look back at the best of the year, after yesterday's Top 10 Horror Movies of 2012, today we present the Top 10 Franchise Movies of 2012.

10. The Expendables 2
Sylvester Stallone did what franchises do best with each successive installment, increase the firepower, literally and figuratively with The Expendables 2. He expanded parts for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger and added action icons Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme to the mix. The fact that the second film was better than the first didn't hurt prospects for this franchise to continue.

Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren in The Expendables 2
9. Breaking Dawn Part 2
The braintrust behind the close of The Twilight Saga scored points for sending its franchise out on a high note. As stated in our Breaking Dawn Part 2 review, it is by far the best of the series. That doesn't necessarily make a great movie series, but it does have the most passionate fan base in the movie business right now. And the fact that there is even discussion that the film series could continue should creator Stephenie Meyer want to... this is a franchise that in many ways could just be beginning to blossom.

8. Prometheus
Although leading up to the release of Prometheus filmmaker Ridley Scott swore that his latest work was not in the Alien universe, upon its release, audiences learned otherwise. Therefore, in terms of the Alien franchise, Scott has done the series a decent service by taking us back to the beginning to learn what led to the world we know that is ruled by Ripley in subsequent installments. Many felt it disappointed, but when expectations are so high for a beloved franchise, it is impossible to please everyone. Prometheus gets better with repeated viewings and shows why Scott is already planning another in the series.

7. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
Those Central Park Zoo zanies went at it again in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and scored on so many levels. The gang famously escaped their zoo in the first Madagascar and got comfortable in Africa in the second film, but it was in the third film that the series took on a more adventurous tone. They introduced a villain (who could easily be on our Top 10 Villains of 2012 list) with Frances McDormand's Captain Chantel DuBois, an animal control worker hot on the trail of our heroes. And believe it or not... they have the best chance of getting home in this latest installment. Think there will be a Madagascar 4? Bet on it. And we want more Madagascar 3 Afro Circus!

6. The Bourne Legacy
Continuing the Bourne series seemed like a risky idea, especially when star Matt Damon announced he would not return. But, filmmakers persevered and scored when they cast Jeremy Renner in the role of Aaron Cross, proving that Jason Bourne was merely one of a slew of chemically altered soldiers. Add Rachel Weisz as a whip-smart scientist who may or may not be a love interest for Cross, and filmmaker Tony Gilroy hit pay dirt with The Bourne Legacy. Look for this franchise to continue, and most likely see the return of Damon with Renner in the next installment.

Rachel Weisz Jeremy Renner The Bourne Legacy
5. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Returning to Middle Earth had to be a worry for director Peter Jackson. With his last installment of The Lord of the Rings series, he earned Oscar gold as Best Director and Best Picture. It's hard to compete with yourself! Yet, as we state in our The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review, Jackson manages to make a familiar world seem strangely new. Old characters return and audiences are treated to the story of Bilbo Baggins (Frodo even makes an appearance!) and how he met Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and their effort to help a team of dwarves retake their mountain home. The second and third installments arrive in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

4. The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan said goodbye to the franchise he started with Batman Begins and sent the Caped Crusader off into the sunset (or is it Paris?) with a final foray in The Dark Knight Rises that is equal parts character study and traditional good-versus-evil fight, while possessing a twist at the end that fans of the series did not see coming. We'll miss you, Mr. Nolan... and you too, Christian Bale.

3. The Hunger Games
The only film on this list that is truly beginning a franchise, The Hunger Games landed in March and exploded onto the pop culture consciousness. Suzanne Collins' book came to life with impeccable detail by screenwriter and director Gary Ross. Jennifer Lawrence could not have been more perfect for the role of Katniss and through her, audiences that did not read the books, learned firsthand why fans of the series are so passionate about this futuristic world. We had to know a phenomenon was starting as soon as that first The Hunger Games trailer hit!

2. Skyfall
James Bond came back with a vengeance, as we stated in our Skyfall review. The flick was the best in decades and that largely had to do with star Daniel Craig feeling comfortable in his own tuxedo, Judi Dench's commanding presence and director Sam Mendes fulfilling a lifelong dream to direct Bond. It all added up to a 23rd edition of James Bond that has become the highest grossing in the entire series.

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in The Avengers

1. The Avengers
The Avengers had several things going for it. First and foremost, producers did well in choosing Joss Whedon to direct. Who else could have managed all those characters in one film? Also, it effortlessly bridged the slew of films that had come before it, such as Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor. It was not so much of a sequel as a true definition of a franchise movie. All of Marvel's major players were present and the entire thing added up to not only the best franchise film of 2012, but one of the best of the year... period.

Honorable mentions:Step Up Revolution, Ice Age: Continental Drift, Men in Black 3, Resident Evil: Retribution, Taken 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, Dredd 3D

The Hobbit: Martin Freeman on Being Bilbo

$

Although Martin Freeman did not grow up a “Tolkien head,” he did read the first book in J.R.R. Tolkien's series to ready for the role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy and was clearly an appreciator of the majesty of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Hobbit Martin Freeman
The Lord of the Rings movies were fantastic. My experience of Middle Earth was by the films which I think are still great pieces of work,” Freeman said.

For him, it was all about getting to be in a Peter Jackson saga. “From my point of view of turning up and being involved in this world, it was a pleasure to be with Pete. It was a pleasure to be with a crew that committed, to get to know the actors who I knew a little bit from home, who subsequently became friends.”

As Jackson told us in our The Hobbit interview, there was never anyone he wanted more for the role of Bilbo than Freeman. Yet, when he first witnessed himself as Bilbo, complete with the extended ears and furry feet, the actor admitted that it was an ever-evolving process. The character goes through so much -- Bilbo can look much different with each shooting day.

“It was sort of gradual because, you know, Bilbo went through a few phases. There were a couple of noses for Bilbo. There was an almost snub nose or just a Cyrano De Bergerac-shaped nose and it was decided my nose was weird enough,” Freeman said and laughed.

“The wigs slightly changed and the color changed and so it went from a more sort of a middle-aged rocker to being what Bilbo looks like now which is... a middle aged rocker [laughs]. It wasn’t just like one minute you are you and then the next minute you look like your character. It’s an incremental process.”

When it comes to favorite moments in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Freeman doesn’t hesitate. It is a scene with Ian McKellen as Gandalf where Bilbo learns his fate is perilous if he goes on this journey to rid the dwarves' home of the dragon Smaug and return it to its rightful inhabitants.

“I think that scene is a pivotal thing for Bilbo, and for the audience, to realize that he still chooses to go on that journey having had that very honest appraisal by the man who is going to take him,” Freeman said. Gandalf tells him he might not survive the journey, and even if he does return to the Shire... he may not be the same. “That is a very scary prospect for most people -- and certainly most Hobbits. But he still chooses to go. I think that’s quite touching.”

When it comes to a story written decades ago, Freeman has a definite opinion now that the non-“Tolkien head” has experienced Middle Earth, on why the story has resonated for decades. “It seems like the classic tale of a small guy who ends up being a hero against his will. And I think that what is always said is true -- heroism is when deeds of bravery, or whatever, are done when you’re scared. If you’re not scared then you’re not being brave. You know, then you’re just being normal,” Freeman said.

Bilbo The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey
"But if you are scared and you do something anyway, that’s real bravery. I think that’s the case here and it’s hard because when I read it, I read it more looking at Bilbo. I can’t read it as a civilian. But certainly, for that main character that’s a big thing for me. He’s literally a small guy thrust into a huge world who manages to do the right thing most of the time, which I think it’s not a lesson, it’s not a lecture to us, but it’s got very interesting things to be drawn from that as a reader, and hopefully as a viewer.”

As discussed in our The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review, Bilbo has not only taken a physical journey across new lands, but also an internal one as well. Freeman too has been on an adventure, one that we might add is still continuing with the second two Hobbit films being completed in New Zealand. But he cannot yet distill what the experience has meant to him.

“I’m not quite sure yet what I’ve learned about myself. I don’t think that’s all fallen into place," Freeman said. "I learned that I can be away from home that long. You can survive that.”

Top 10 Movie Performances of 2012: Who Gave Their Best?

This has been a banner year for terrific performances turned in by some of the greatest performers working today. From Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln, Denzel Washington's troubled pilot safely landing a crashing airliner in Flight and Jessica Chastain chasing down Osama bin Laden, it has never been harder to not only narrow down the list of acting performances to 10, but to even put them in order!

As Movie Fanatic continues our best of 2012 series -- don't miss our Top 10 Horror Movies of 2012 and Top 10 Movie Franchises of 2012 -- we turn our spotlight on the performances themselves.

10. Denzel Washington in Flight
No one but Washington could have made a character that is completely wasted when he flies a plane while still having us pulling for him when investigators try to determine whether he is the reason the plane crashed. We know as an audience that without Washington piloting that plane, everyone would have died. Instead, his brave maneuvers saved over 100 people.

Flight Star Denzel Washington

Even though what he did was a felony, through Washington's powerful performance, we see him as the everyman and wish nothing but good things for him. Washington's recent salute with the Golden Globe nominations proves we are not alone in sharing our awe in Washington's Flight.

9. Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe
McConaughey shocked the world with his take on a corrupt Texas cop and we get a side of the popular actor that is so horrible, you may need a shower after witnessing his work in Killer Joe. The actor had quite a year in 2012 with turns in Magic Mike, The Paperboy and Bernie, but as we say in our Killer Joe review, the man is astounding playing evil.

8. Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone
There is such a vast character arc required of Cotillard in Rust and Bone that only an actress of her caliber and sensitivity could have pulled it off. She goes from a triumphant killer whale trainer at a Sea World-type facility to a woman who has lost her legs and in many ways, her will to live.

When she meets a street fighter whose life is also not going so well, Cotillard takes the character that is right in her wheelhouse and creates her most breathtakingly real work to date. Some have even said she's the front-runner for Best Actress at the Oscars. We think she's right there, but it's still too close of a race to call.

7. John Hawkes in The Sessions
Hawkes notoriously loses himself in his roles. But The Sessionsrequired a Herculean effort for the Oscar nominee to become a man stuck in an iron lung who decides it's time to lose his virginity. The way Hawkes not only physically contorts himself, but also brings a personality to his character is electric. Although he cannot move, his persona is huge. Hawkes is a marvel in that he can only use his face to convey emotion, when normally actors have their entire body as their toolbox.

6. Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty
As teased in this Zero Dark Thirty clip, Chastain commands every scene she's in in the film and it's easy to see why Kathryn Bigelow cast her as the CIA agent who spearheaded the decade-long effort to capture and kill Osama bin Laden. She is equally steely as she is sensitive and it is her heartbeat that drives the manhunt and the film itself. The actress had a stellar 2011 and she appears to only be getting better with each passing year.

Zero Dark Thirty Star Jessica Chastain

5. Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained

Foxx is Django in every sense of the word in Quentin Tarantino's latest. Django Unchained gets its title from the fact that Christoph Waltz's character has bought the slave and given him his freedom while the two work as bounty hunters across the American west. Django is driven by the desire to be reunited with his slave wife and in the hands of Foxx, the role is equal parts vengeance, personal discovery and all powerful.

It reminds us why Foxx already has a Best Actor trophy on his shelf!

4. Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables
Hathaway is a lock to take home the Best Supporting Actress trophy and as Movie Fanatic sees it, the award will be earned for pulling a Jennifer Hudson-type of move. No one in the world could have sung I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserableswith the power she did, much as Hudson earned her Supporting Actress Academy Award for her belting out I Am Telling You in Dreamgirls. No one else in the category stands a chance. At our Les Mis screening, there was not a dry eye in the house when she finished the song that catapulted Susan Boyle to fame.

3. Quvenzhane Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild
Although only eight-years-old when Wallis filmed Beasts of the Southern Wild, she was acting like a pro with decades of experience. She owned the movie and is largely why the flick has become a phenomenon. The emotional range this talented little girl exhibits in the dramatic film is nothing short of a miracle. To think she never acted a moment in her life before filmmakers found her in Louisiana is nothing short of fate rearing its head and showing that everything happens for a reason.

Wallis is a find that we expect to continue to see great things from in the future. As you can see in our Quvenzhane Wallis exclusive interview, she is as shy in person as she is powerful onscreen!

2. Naomi Watts in The Impossible
There is a scene in The Impossible, after the tsunami has struck Naomi Watts' Thailand vacation paradise with her family where she is clinging to a palm tree and convulsing from weeping so hard. If she is nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress, it is the scene Movie Fanatic hopes they show when the actresses all get their clip. It is a snapshot of the astounding work the Australian actress turns in for what could have easily been a performance that bordered on exploitation of a tragedy.

With Watts, her work on the film in fact carries it and it is through her eyes that the audience can most identify with the horror going on while thousands are affected by mass destruction and death.

1. Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln
Since we first saw photos of Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, he didn't have to utter a word to shoot to the top of performances of the year. But after witnessing the miracle that is his performance in Lincoln, it only further enhances that view. Is there anything that Lewis cannot do? It's beginning to look that way as the challenge that any actor would see tackling the greatest U.S. president of all-time, would make them run the other way. In Lewis' hands, the Great Emancipator comes to life in ways we could never have imagined. It is a study in pure excellence.

Lincoln Daniel Day Lewis
Honorable mentions: Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Smashed, Seann William Scott in Goon, Seth MacFarlane in Ted, Helen Mirren in Hitchcock, Joaquin Phoenix in The Master, Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street, Richard Gere in Arbitrage, James Spader in Lincoln, Ezra Miller in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Anthony Hopkins in Hitchcock, Gina Carano in Haywire, Michael Pena in End of Watch, Jack Black in Bernie, Christopher Walken in The Late Quartet, Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games, Robert De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook.

Weekend Movie Preview: December 14, 2012

There is only one film opening nationally this week, so our latest weekend movie preview is naturally all about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey: The first book that introduced the world to Middle Earth was J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson returns to the franchise that won him a Best Picture and Best Director Oscar and turns Tolkien's origins story into a new trilogy.

The first to arrive is An Unexpected Journey and it finds us meeting our hero Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he is recruited by Gandalf (Ian McKellen) for an adventure where they seek to battle an evil dragon who has taken over the homeland of the world's dwarves.

As we state in our The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review, the film is a bit long, but worth it overall and is a quite satisfying return to Middle Earth.

Although there is only one film landing in theaters on December 14, merely a few days away on December 19 we get the hilarious and heartfelt The Guilt Trip with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand as well as the early award season leader, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. Oh, and there's another Pixar classic given the 3D update... Monster's Inc!

And then days after that, a cavalcade of movie awesomeness lands with The Impossible, Jack Reacher, This Is 40 and the finally premiering On the Road.

Then, Hollywood's Christmas presents abound with December 25 releases Django Unchained, Les Miserables and Parental Guidance.

The Hobbit Breaks Records: Weekend Box Office Report

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey broke records, but did not hit the mark that box office watchers expected it to. It stormed its way into theaters for its premiere weekend and banked $84 million. How does a film earn that much and is still considered a weaker opening than expected? The first chapter of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy easily broke the previous holder of the highest grossing December weekend record -- I am Legend. Back in 2007, that Will Smith starring movie earned $77 million in its opening weekend.

Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit
The issue is that pundits thought The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would topple $100 million in its first weekend. After the anticipation that had built up over the years since Return of the King ruled the world, surely that marker could have been attainable. And one could argue that less people saw the film than the numbers suggest due to the increased ticket prices for IMAX and 3D.

Family film Rise of the Guardians managed to land in second place with $7.4 in its fourth week of release, probably due to the lack of a true family film out there. The announcement of the Golden Globe nominations and how Lincoln grabbed seven probably helped its weekend box office, as it landed in third adding another $7.2 million to its $107.9 million total.

Fourth place featured last week's number one, Skyfall. The latest edition of the 007 saga earned $7 million, bringing its total to an astonishing $272.4 million. Closing out the top five is the slowly-building success of Life of Pi. Ang Lee's 3D epic, perhaps also buoyed by Golden Globe nods, banked $5.4 million in its fourth week of release.

Box office Top 10:

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, $84.8 million
2. Rise of the Guardians, $7.4 million
3. Lincoln, $7.2 million
4. Skyfall, $7 million
5. Life of Pi, $5.4 million
6. Breaking Dawn Part 2, $5.1 million
7. Wreck-It Ralph, $3.3 million
8. Playing for Keeps, $3.2 million
9. Red Dawn, $2.4 million
10. Silver Linings Playbook, $2.1 million
