Olympus Has Fallen: Director Antoine Fuqua Talks Trailer Debut

Movie Fanatic was summoned to a Hollywood editing studio for a visit with director Antoine Fuqua as he put the finishing touches on his recently premiered Olympus Has Fallen trailer.

Gerard Butler Olympus Has Fallen

The director, whose last film gave us such stellar Training Day quotes, talked to us about the movie that follows Gerard Butler as a Secret Service Agent trying to save the President (Aaron Eckhart) from North Korean terrorists who have taken over the White House. Moments after he was done with the teaser, he showed it to Movie Fanatic and then… we asked his first impressions.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” Fuqua said.

Given the fact that this entire production was put together at warp speed, the helmer seems pretty pleased with what he sees… as do we. “I literally prepped this movie in six weeks. But the thing about it is that I hired great people -- smart technical people to help me. We built the White House ourselves in an empty freeway lot [in Louisiana]. Because of the technology today, we built Washington! I’m really proud of it and what we pulled off. And... I’m still working on it.”

Olympus Has Fallen lands in theaters quite soon and Fuqua admitted to being up to his ears in work to this day. “We are literally approving 200 shots a day and the movie has to be in theaters on March 22nd. I’ve never ever made a movie in this short of time. It does put a certain pressure on you,” he admitted. “You are going to see some scenes for yourself.”

Then, the helmer showed off a scene that takes place near the beginning of the film where Butler’s character is chaperoning the President and First Lady’s son in a caravan with the First Family leaving Camp David. Suddenly, the blinding snow causes a horrible accident. Butler swings into action to save the First Lady, and as shown in the newly released teaser… he does not succeed.

Butler, fresh off of Chasing Mavericks, envelops a character that is so distraught over the loss that he leaves the Presidential detail and joins the Treasury Department (that puts him geographically near the White House when the titular attack occurs).

Olympus Has Fallen Photo

Fuqua was taken by conversations he had with real Secret Service Agents and how they would react to tragedy. “One thing I learned from these guys and you know this as well because you know history: The Secret Service job is either 100-percent success or 100-percent failure. There is no in between for them," Fuqua said.

"Kennedy dies, it’s a failure. First Lady dies, it’s a failure. Your job is to protect the President. Even when Reagan got shot, that’s a failure. The fact he was even hit with a bullet and could have died, it was a failure. Their job is so extreme. For a guy like Banning (Butler), who’s always there to protect and put his life on the line for what he believes in, to remove himself because he felt he failed is quite real."

The director took inspiration from those charged with protecting President Kennedy. "There were a lot of guys who were involved in the Kennedy assassination, as far as Secret Service guys, who went through serious depression and alcoholism," he said.

"A lot of these guys go through so much emotionally when it happens because their job is prevention. It shouldn’t happen. Just like 9/11 shouldn’t have happened. One mistake… one time, these things can happen.”

Fuqua believes he’s achieved a classic hero’s journey with Olympus Has Fallen, perhaps a polar opposite journey of his main character in his last directorial effort, Training Day.“It’s like going into the belly of the beast, which is the White House," Fuqua said. Butler's character wants back in, but doesn't feel he deserves it. "It shows that if you ask for something, you might get it. Not exactly the way you want it, but it’s coming right at you."

The villains in this film are the North Koreans and Fuqua found that given their place in the world currently, and how films have overdone other geopolitical foes, it was a perfect fit.

“The Middle East has been done and done. You know that story. We’ve dealt with that. It seems to me, and we talk about this a lot, North Korea is the black spot on the globe. There is the least known about the country. They don’t let anybody in. They don’t let cameras in," Fuqua said.

"There was a great special on CNN that Lisa Ling narrated where they snuck cameras in and they showed public executions, people starving on the street. It’s a dangerous place. It’s so close to South Korea, it’s right at the border. Part of the thing we deal with in our movie is the Seventh Fleet, which is there to keep the peace and make sure North Korea stays in place.”

Aaron Eckhart Olympus Has Fallen

What also feels so real is in the footage we saw, the attackers come at the White House posing as tourists, something that sadly, could really happen.

“You see them getting off the bus. It’s set up, and that’s what I enjoyed about it. Anyone can come to this country and that is the beauty of it. It’s also scary, we all see people walking down Pennsylvania Avenue all the time. I’m sure they run these scenarios. For a movie, it’s great to explore. The attack happens [in the movie] on July 5. It’s the classic tale of hitting them while they sleep,” Fuqua said.

The director is still keenly aware that a film is meant to enlighten and entertain. “It’s a balance because it is supposed to be fun and it is a take over the White House movie but I wanted to make it feel authentic. I wanted you to believe this could happen, and I want you to think about that.”

When the song first hit the web, fans went crazy for Adele's Skyfall theme. Then, we hit the theaters and got to see the very cool opening credit sequence. Now, we can relive the song once more.

Adele will perform Skyfall, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, at the award ceremony!

Adele Golden Globes

The British singer recently became Golden Globe winner for the song, and is a favorite to take the Oscar as well. There is no word yet whether the other Best Original Song nominees will perform as well, though host Seth MacFarlane is also nominated, and a duet between him and Ted for the song"Everybody Needs a Best Friend" does seem like a good idea.

Parker: Jason Statham on Tackling Literary Action Hero

Jason Statham is back kicking butt, as seen in the Parker trailer. This time out, the U.K. born action hero is in Parker, based on a blockbuster book series. The character of Parker, a crook with a conscience, stems from the pages of author Donald E. Westlake and his twenty-something novels about the man of action. The veteran action star hooked up with an Oscar-nominated director for Parker known more for character stories than thrillers, Taylor Hackford.

Parker Jason Statham

Movie Fanatic caught up with Statham as he dished working with his surprising co-star Jennifer Lopez, what Hackford brought to the action genre and even gives us an update on those The Expendables 3 rumors.

Movie Fanatic: One of the most thrilling action sequences in Parker is when your crew turns on you and there’s five of you in the van that you eventually jump out the window at 60 miles an hour…

Jason Statham: It was very claustrophobic! There’s not a lot of places to put a camera. Again, we’re dealing with, “How can we make this believable?” We grab the gun. It’s not like this guy’s going to shoot his friend’s ear off. So, you have to grab the gun and pull it, which makes him pull the trigger. You have to get the details right. While I’m doing that, somebody else is trying to turn a gun on me… you have to play this whole thing through. Then obviously, I have to jump out a window [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: One of those guys in the car is Michael Chiklis. How does he fare compared to other movie foes you’ve had?

Jason Statham: He’s a really experienced actor. Michael Chiklis has been in The Shield. No one knows how to rough someone up better than him. So we know what’s coming. You get to relax more when you’re in the company of experienced people.

Movie Fanatic: What’s it like working with a director in Taylor Hackford who hasn’t done action before?

Jason Statham: He’s so driven by everything being authentic and believable. He gave me a chance to do something that I don’t normally do. I get to play a more realistic chap that isn’t the guy that can take on ten guys. He was instrumental in pushing this guy to barely make it through these action sequences and just survive enough to be able to get to the next part. I have to take my hat off to Taylor. The execution of the physical stuff is something I know very much about, so rest assured, I can say, “Look, this is going to be easy if we do it this way.” It’s a great collaboration.

Jason Statham in Parker

Movie Fanatic: How was trying to nail a Texas accent?

Jason Statham: You know what? When he’s doing the Texan accent, he’s playing a guy from Texas because he’s posing in disguise in order to get some information. I think it’s just one of the characteristics of Parker which is he’s cunning. He’s very pragmatic and he’ll do what it takes to get what he needs.

Movie Fanatic: Did you have any accent coaching?

Jason Statham: Taylor was my accent coach. So, if it’s bad, you can tell him [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: How much did you look back at Westlake’s books for reference, given that he’s got such a passionate following?

Jason Statham: I just stuck to the script because at the end of the day, Taylor has an interpretation to make. He will guide us through the story. We just have to go with the vision of the director. When Jennifer (Lopez) comes in, she’s got things she wants to say and things about the character that she wants to bring or take away. Everyone has their fingers into the pie.

Movie Fanatic: Speaking of Jennifer, your pairings are greatly expanding of late. Recently, you did Killer Elite with Robert De Niro, and now you’re with Jennifer Lopez. How was J. Lo?

Jason Statham: We’d go and light the house on fire. It was just fun from the get go. When I meet somebody, it doesn’t matter who they are. I don’t have any preconceived ideas about who they are. I don’t listen to all the crap that comes with it. She was as sweet as they could ever be. She’s just a bundle of fun. We had great chemistry. We had a great time doing the job. The relationship between Parker and the character that Jennifer played was good because it was trying to be sexual. It wasn’t. Never could it get there. There was a lot of tension there. It was nice to play with that because she’s so playful anyway.

Jennifer Lopez and Jason Statham in Parker

Movie Fanatic: And Nick Nolte played a surrogate father to you…

Jason Statham: He’s a legend! Nolte is the man. When you get to work with Nolte on the day, it’s a good day.

Movie Fanatic: What did you like about playing Parker, as opposed to other action heroes you’ve played before?

Jason Statham: Well, I like crime thrillers. I like heist movies. I like action movies that set all those elements into one and a chance to do something that comes from a great stable of writing. Donald Westlake has written countless books about this chap, over 20. Sixty books in total he wrote in his career so this guy knows how to write. And so, I’m getting to do an action movie with all the greatness of a storyteller like Donald Westlake.

Movie Fanatic: Has Sylvester Stallone talked to you at all about Expendables 3 and the casting?

Jason Statham: He hasn’t said anything but I hear rumors. I should never go with rumors because they’re often not correct, but I hear Jackie Chan might be coming to the party and that would make me very happy because I do like Jackie Chan.

Movie Fanatic: Any other action stars you’d like to see joining The Expendables franchise?

Jason Statham: I like Jackie because I’ve been a fan of Jackie’s forever. He’s broken every bone in his body for his commitment and dedication to doing his own stunts. So he’s the real deal. He is the real deal. He’s my favorite. I like Clint Eastwood as well. Steven Seagal would be great. I would put him in there.

Guardians of the Galaxy Pursuing Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler

Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely a lesser-known Marvel property, but they are going hard after some well-known cast.

Early this month, we reported that John Krasinski, Zachary Levi, Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), and even Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper) were on a shortlist to play Star Lord, the half-man half-alien main protagonist of the film. Now, Latino Reviewis reporting that Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler are both being chased.

  • Jim Carrey Image
  • Funnyman Adam Sandler

Marvel has apparently inquired about the availability of both actors, which doesn't necessarily mean much. There is no word on which characters they would play, or if they're perhaps both being sought for the same character.

Carrey is taking his a leap into Superhero Comedy as Colonel Stars and Stripes in Kick-Ass 2, which comes out this summer. Sandler, however, would be new to the hero realm.

James Gunn (Movie 43) is slated to direct, which gives the distinct impression that Guardians will have a comedic bend. No casting decisions have yet been made, with production slated to begin this summer, and a realase date set for August 1, 2014.

Homemade Iron Man Laser Gauntlets For Sale: Pop Balloons Like Iron Man

If you're a giant Comic Book Movie nerd, a skilled engineer, and have ungodly amounts of free time, raise your homemade Iron Man Laser Gauntlet.

Weird, looks like there's only one guy. This guy. He threw a Youtube video up of his super nerdsome (That's nerdy + awesome. Don't steal that, Zooey Deschanel) functional Iron Man Laser Gauntlet. Check out the video below:

Granted, by "functional," he seems to mean that it can pop balloons, but don't take that as a slight. Once I tried to make a lighter out of a different lighter and some spray paint, and even that didn't end very well (helpful home-improvement tip: don't light the lighter while spraying it with spray paint).

The device is available for custom order, though don't ask him for any plans or schematics, because he's not giving them up. If you can get to it in time you could wear your Laser Gauntlet to the opening of Iron Man 3 on May 3. And read through some Iron Man quotes to get some ideas for cool things to say while you're wearing it.

Movie Fanatic's Top 100 Films of All Time: 20-11

$

We're one week away from releasing our list of the Top 10 films of all time. This week, we count down from #20 to #11, with some absolutely fantastic films, both classic and modern. This is where it really gets tough, as there are so many deserving movies. But we had to narrow it down, and narrow we did.

Read back through the full list with #100-91, #90-81, #80-71, #70-61, #60-51, #50-41, #40-31, and #30-21, then scroll down to see which films start off our Top 20.

Top 100 Films of All Time

20. Rear Window
One of Alfred Hitchcock’s absolute best and the reason is the suspense is so thick in the Jimmy Stewart-starring classic, you could cut it with a knife used for murder. The man who became known as the “Master of Suspense” solidified that title with this story of a man (Stewart) stuck in a wheelchair recovering from an injury. He becomes obsessed with the goings-on of his neighbors. When he witnesses what he thinks is a crime, he starts to become part of the mystery. Inhabiting the “Hitchcock” blonde role in this thriller was the outstanding Grace Kelly. Even the Rear Window quotes give us the chills.

19. There Will Be Blood
I maintain that this is the best movie I’ve ever seen first-run, in theaters (for a frame of reference, I was born in the 80s and started seeing movies in theaters in the 90s). Paul Thomas Anderson’s dark, beautiful, pathos-filled tale of a greedy oil man is perfect in almost all its elements. Daniel Day-Lewis leads an extraordinary cast of actors with his mind-blowing performance as Daniel Plainview. Combine that with Anderson’s impeccable script (“I drink your milkshake,” anyone?), stunning cinematography from Robert Elswit, and a perfectly complimentary soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood, and There Will Be Blood captures a well-deserved spot in the Top 20 Films of All Time. Head to our There Will Be Blood quotes page for more.

18. Being John Malkovich
Spike Jonze announced himself as a filmmaker with huge promise with this wildly original adventure of a kind not seen before onscreen. John Cusack and Cameron Diaz played a loveless married couple who end up on the adventure of a lifetime heading, literally, into the world of John Malkovich. The actor was such a good sport and played a wild-eyed version of himself. And Catherine Keener killed it as Maxine, the object of affection of both Cusack and Diaz. No one will ever make a movie like Being John Malkovich...period. Check out our section on Being John Malkovich quotes and try not to think about them the rest of the day!

17. Gone with the Wind
When adjusted for inflation, Gone with the Wind is the highest-grossing film of all time. It’s also extremely long, with a 3 hour and 44 minute run time. But each minute is well worth it, with outstanding performances from Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. The American classic is set in the 19th Century Reconstruction-era South, with a script by Sidney Howard and direction by Victor Fleming.Gone With the Wind won 10 Academy Awards, setting a record that lasted until Ben Hur beat it in 1960. Check out some Gone with the Wind quotes for more.

16. Dr. Strangelove
When Dr. Strangelove arrived in 1964, its humorous look at the out-of-control arms race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. was right from the headlines. Russian leaders had said at the U.N. recently, “We will bury you.” And a presidential candidate that year, Barry Goldwater, was advocating the use of nukes to put Russia in its place. Toss in a career-best performance by comic acting mastermind Peter Sellers, and an instant classic was born. Then there’s the direction of Stanley Kubrick, who announced to the world that his films would change the way we look at movies and ourselves. Few films of that era produced as many great lines as is found in the Dr. Strangelove quotes.

15. Diner
One of the best coming-of-age films of all time, Diner tells the story of a group of friends in Baltimore during the last week of 1959, as they struggle with transitioning into adulthood. Barry Levinson wrote and directed the poignant and hilarious film, which stars Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, and Paul Riser. If you like Swingers, Reservoir Dogs, I Love You Man, and even Seinfeld, you have Diner at least partly to thank. Read through some hilarious Diner quotes to see why it deserves to be here.

14. Pulp Fiction
Quentin Tarantino had become a cult favorite with his script for Tony Scott’s True Romance and then for his first feature that he wrote and directed, Reservoir Dogs. When Pulp Fiction first premiered at the normally stuffy Cannes Film Festival and shocked the world with its Best Picture (Palm D’Or) win, an entire world raised its collective eyebrow. Then, audiences saw it and a phenomenon was born. To this day, Pulp Fiction quotes dominate conversation between movie fanatics, and every film since that the auteur made, and will make into the future, will always be compared to Pulp Fiction.

13. Full Metal Jacket
Stanley Kubrick’s classic war film is famously split into what feels like two separate movies: basic training, and active duty in Vietnam. Vincent D’Onofrio stars as the disturbed Private Pyle, who struggles with the rigor of basic training. Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, and R. Lee Erney round out an excellent cast, as FMJ recreates some of the witty “absurdity of war” commentary Kubrick achieved with Dr. Strangelove (mentioned above), while achieving a brand of gritty realism that had become a must for most modern war films. Head to our Full Metal Jacket quotes page for more.

12. Citizen Kane
Considered by many (including AFI) to be the best film of all-time, Movie Fanatic agrees it is one of the titans of cinema, but just out of our top 10. Orson Welles’s 1941 iconic movie showed Hollywood what a triple threat could do if allowed to accomplish his or her dreams. Prior to that film, few were given the opportunity to write, direct and star in a motion picture. Welles also made history by winning the Oscar Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. The movie would lose the Oscar to How Green Was My Valley, which is still considered one of the biggest upsets of all time. Check out the Citizen Kane quotes and you decide if the film is based on the life of the patriarch of the Pulitzer family...

11. Manhattan
While not necessarily his funniest film, Manhattan is certainly Woody Allen’s prettiest and most personal. A true love letter to New York City, Allen’s black-and-white masterpiece follows the life of a hapless writer, dealing with the aftermath of a divorce and a newfound relationship with an under-aged girl, played by Mariel Hemmingway. All of Allen’s acerbic wit is present, but Manhattan exudes far more vulnerability and charming despair than most of his other work. Check out our Manhattan quotes page for some of Allen’s gems.

The Justice League Superheroes: Who Will Be Included?

DC and Warner Bros' superhero team movie, The Justice League, is still a ways away. There is still no director, and no official cast.

But today, Latino Reviewis reporting that the five core members of The Justice League have been chosen! LR has been a fairly good source for this type of news, but until it's official I would take it with at least one grain of salt.

The Justice League

So who will be included in The Justice League movie? According to LR:Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and The Flash!

There has been a lot of speculation over whether Man of Steel will serve as the launching-pad for the new DC universe, with Henry Cavill's involvement in The Justice League still not confirmed. Then of course, there's the batter of who will play Batman? Joseph Gordon-Levitt was rumored to be considered for Batman last year, though that idea was met with a fair amount of backlash from fans.

Ryan Reynolds portrayed Green Lantern in the 2011 film, though nobody would be surprised if that role was recast. The biggest question mark then, is who will play Wonder Woman.

The article also claims that a few cameos will be included. Possibilities for those characters include Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Hawkman. Let us know what you think of the news, and who you'd love to see cast in the comments section below!

Movie 43: Peter Farrelly Talks Pushing Comedy Envelope

$

0

Peter Farrelly has been behind, with his brother Bobby, some of the most popular comedy films of all time. Try thinking of some of his best without uttering Dumb and Dumber quotes or There's Something About Mary quotes!

Peter Farrelly Hugh Jackman Movie 43

Now, he's back with Movie 43 that is sure to inspire quite a few more oft-quoted lines. Farrelly spoke with Movie Fanatic exclusively to talk about his new comedy and the influential film classic that inspired it, Kentucky Fried Movie. "[Movie 43 producer] Charlie Wessler, he’s been talking for years about doing a Kentucky Fried Movie and an Amazon Women (of the Moon) type movie," Farrelly said.

There is a clear difference in those films that compiled comic shorts and the stories teased in the Movie 43 trailer. "Where those movies were written by the Zuckers [David and Jerry] and [Jim] Abrahams, while John Landis directed, this has all different writers, all different directors," Farrelly said.

Wesller scoured the internet looking to find the funniest work being created today. "We got thousands of submissions and then we cut it down to 16 or 17 and made them with all different directors and a slew of different stars," Farrelly added.

"And because in the last decade, the world’s attention span has shrunk so drastically, you can’t do a movie like Kentucky Fried Movie that goes from short to short to short, because an hour and five minutes in -- people will be looking at their watches saying, 'Do I want to see another short?'"

Farrelly and Wessler avoided that problem by making the comic shorts interwoven. "We have a wrap around and we cut back between the mini-movies that holds it together and keeps you wondering what’s going to happen by the end of this thing," Farrelly said. "I can’t tell you more than that, but the thing is it’s a little bonus that keeps you interested."

Although making Movie 43 was truly a collaborative process, Farrelly cautioned that it was also quite freeing for all the filmmakers involved.

"It was a little different collaboration-wise because it wasn’t me sitting with them and saying, 'What about this?' First of all, we picked great scripts. And then we hired directors that most of them were up and coming and really admired. We told them, 'Go make this.' And we didn’t say a word. They made it, cut it and gave it to us and then we put it all together," he said. "It was really fun and easy."

Richard Gere Movie 43

Also freeing was the ability for Farrelly and his team to continually work on the film over almost four years. Given the star power in the film -- everyone from Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Richard Gere, Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts and Gerard Butler -- getting everyone's schedules straight would have been impossible.

"We have so many stars in this. We couldn’t shoot it like a normal movie over 10 or 12 weeks because they’re all not going to be available," Farrelly said.

"When Charlie would call someone like a Richard Gere, and say, 'Hey Richard, want to do this ballsy movie? It’s really insane!' He’d say, 'I’m busy for a year.' And Charlie would say, 'We could make it work.' We shot for three or four days, shut down for four months and shot another three or four days… we did that over and over for almost four years."

Given his passion for the project that kept him filming for years, one can imagine the thrill Farrelly has now that the film is arriving January 25. "I’m very happy with it," he said.

Yet, he cautions that reviews are likely to run the gamut as they do for most envelope-pushing movies.

"It’s going to get about a six on the Rotten Tomatoes meter, just so you know," Farrelly said and laughed. "It’s so unusual and groundbreaking. Critics are not going to get it. But, the thing plays like a rock concert. It’s played better than any movie I’ve ever made. People are going to flip for this thing. It’s outrageous and fun."

Stephen Merchant and Halle Berry Movie 43

Having Movie 43 released into the world also in a way, finds Farrelly coming back to what inspired him to make movies in the first place as a youngster growing up in New England.

"The biggest influence we had movie-wise was the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams, because until we saw Kentucky Fried Movie and we’re back in Rhode Island thinking, 'Holy (expletive), I had no idea you could do this.' That looked like fun. Then, Airplane comes out and it’s so hilarious and you see these guys being interviewed on Letterman and they just seemed so normal," Farrelly said.

"That’s the first moment I realized that we could do that. I remember thinking in my head, 'Maybe we can do that.' It seemed like a long shot, but it seemed possible. If there were no Zuckers, I would never have made it out of Rhode Island."

Huge news for Star Wars fans! J.J. Abrams will be directing the Star Wars Episode VII!

J.J. Abrams

After claiming that he'd rather be an audience member than involved in the process of making the film, the Star Trek Into Darkness director apparently changed his mind. Though there is no official word yet, The Wrap is reporting that Abrams will indeed direct the first Disney Star Wars film.

Abrams is now in charge of the two biggest sci-fi franchises ever, which I think makes him the king of the universe. He apparently beat out Argo director Ben Affleck, who was another top contender for the gig.

Inherent Vice Casting News: Joaquin Phoenix looks to Rejoin Paul Thomas Anderson

After last year's The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson is working on an adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel Inherent Vice. Now, Joaquin Phoenix, who played the disturbed wanderer Freddie Quell in The Master, is in talks to star in the new film.

Joaquin Phoenix Picture

Inherent Vice follows pothead Private Investigator Doc Sportello in the late 1960's. When Sportello's ex-girlfriend approaches him about an apparent plot to kidnap a rich Los Angeles developer, it can only lead to trouble.

The book is describes as a psychedelic noir. Anderson has yet to really tackle a genre film, but after mastering (no pun intended) off-beat character-driven dramedy (Punch Drunk Love, Boogie Nights) and brooding drama (There Will Be Blood, which was named #19 on our list of the best films of all time), there's no reason for him not to try his hand at "psychedelic noir."

There's no word on a production or release schedule as of yet. Stay tuned for more details as they're announced.

Parker Exclusive: Taylor Hackford Talks Swinging Into Action

Taylor Hackford may have seemed like an interesting choice to helm the new Jason Statham action film, with all its attitude fully present in the Parker poster. But, when we caught up with the legendary director (Ray, The Devil's Advocate) for an exclusive interview, he told us his passion for the project stemmed from the 24 books that author Donald Westlake wrote that centered on this criminal character with a firm set of standards. Now, it all makes sense.

Jason Statham Taylor Hackford Parker

"Westlake defines Parker very well. He doesn’t say anything. He keeps to his own counsel. But, he’s constantly aware. He’s constantly analyzing. He waits until the moment that is right and he springs. And when he springs, sometimes you don’t know why. It may take you two scenes to realize why he did that," Hackford said.

"That’s a huge challenge to a filmmaker, but it’s also a great lot of fun. You’re not going to do it in dialogue. He’s not going to tell you what he’s thinking. If you can do that as a director, then you have something."

That's why the helmer believes there could have been no better choice to play the titular character than Statham. "When he acts, it’s always with purpose. It’s never mindless. You might not see it when it’s happening, but later you realize why he made those choices," he said. "Over the course of time, that’s interesting filmmaking."

For someone who has truly never made an action movie before, having someone possessing Statham's professionalism was priceless.

"Jason was an Olympic diver (which the actor told us about in our Jason Statham interview). He is a perfectionist because all divers are. He is in for the count. You don’t have to beat actors like him with a stick and say, 'Don’t use a stuntman.' He’s always up for it," Hackford said. "I knew that going in. I’ve met him before, he’s a real bloke. When you work with him in those instances, he’s a maniac. He wants to get everything right. That’s a gift to a director."

Hackford also wants Movie Fanatic to know that although he has never truly tackled an action film, he cherishes them. "This is me. I’m a fan of genre films. When you see it and it works, it’s such a great satisfaction," he admitted.

We then asked Hackford what it was about the character of Parker that has resonated with fans over 24 books... unheard of in popular culture.

Nick Nolte Taylor Hackford Parker

"He has got a certain integrity. He’s no Robin Hood, he really isn’t. People say he’s got a code of ethics. Nah. What he is, is a professional. He’s a criminal. He wants to steal as much money as humanly possible. And he has not one iota of remorse about it. You accept the character. The difference is that he has a set of rules. They’re pragmatic rules. I don’t want to go to jail,” he said and laughed.

“As he goes about it, he has this way that he works. Is he violent? He can be incredibly violent. But is he a psychopathic person who likes to hurt people? No. He goes in and tells people what he expects. He says, 'Do this, and you’ll be fine. Don’t do this, and there’ll be repercussions.' He’s straight about it. When you see that as an audience you think, 'At least this is a guy who lays it out there.'"

The story, so effectively teased in the Parker trailer, shows what happens when the man who is normally a lone wolf, works with a crew. He lets them know about his rules and when things fall apart, the action in the film truly gets going.

"When they don’t follow the rules, he will go to the ends of the earth to put things right," Hackford said.

Even when he's been beaten to within inches of his life, the character will get back up and dive into the belly of the beast to make things right. "Probably the smartest thing for him to do would be to walk away and live to fight another day. Does he do that? No. In its own way, he has an integrity. In today’s world where there isn’t a lot of integrity, everyone’s ready to compromise, Parker won’t go there. You may abhor what he does, but you admire him."

For the role of Leslie, the director called an old friend whom some may think is a unique choice, Jennifer Lopez. "People expect Jennifer in a romantic comedy. I know her. We almost did another project together that didn’t work, so I called her to do this film. I wasn’t offering the big Hollywood dream part. I’m offering her Parker starring Jason Statham,” Hackford said and laughed.

Parker Jennifer Lopez Jason Statham

"She knows she’s not going to be the star. Plus, this is a messy character. This is a woman pushing 40 who is a failure. All of her dreams have been dashed. Her prince charming turned out to be a toad. He went bankrupt and left her with the debts. She has to move in with her mother!"

Hackford let his friend know that this character mirrored the strength that the superstar has exhibited in real life. "Jennifer listened to me and I told her this is a character just like you. I don’t care how much you’ve gotten down, you never gave up. Leslie never gives up," he said.

"Jennifer's had some emotional wear on those tires. She’s not that young girl that’s just starting out. When you can take that and translate that to your acting, it’s impressive. Plus, she’s great with Jason. He just lights up when he’s with her."
