So far, most of what we've seen from The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones has been the various characters staring severely into the middle-foreground. If you've enjoyed that trend, then his new still of Jamie Campbell Bower will not disappoint.

Jamie Campbell Bower The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Bower stars as Jace, a half-angel half-human called a Shadowhunter. When a woman named Jocelyn is kidnapped, her daughter Clary, played by Lily Collins, solicits the help of the Shadowhunters to find her.

Lena Headey, Aiden Turner (The Hobbit), Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jared Harris, Kevin Durand, and Jemima West also star.

Harald Zwart directs the film, which is based on the first book in the popular young adult novel series. Check out some more The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones stills.

Beautiful Creatures: Jeremy Irons Talks Spellbinding Career

Jeremy Irons had a ball playing the the caster Macon in Beautiful Creatures, who is charged with protecting his niece Lena (Alice Englert). Lena is approaching her sixteenth birthday and in their witchy world, that means she will be "claimed" by either the dark or light side of the magical world. "I thought there was a certain wit and panache about him and a certain enigma, which was interesting," Irons said.

Jeremy Irons Stars in Beautiful Creatures

Based on the blockbuster selling books by Cami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Beautiful Creatures follows Lena as she moves back to her family's home town. She meets a book crazy teen named Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich) and sparks fly. The only thing is, Macon believes, her relationship with this "boy" could deeply threaten her world.

Irons' role as Macon is just the latest in a long line of outstanding work. He won an Oscar for Best Actor for his turn in Reversal of Fortune and has appeared in dozens of other films that have cemented his status as one of the best working today. When he took the part of Macon, director Richard LaGravenese actually didn't want him turning to the bestselling books for inspiration.

"I was encouraged not to read the books," Irons said. Which was fine, the actor came onto the movie late in the process and it was all he could do to wrap his head around the character on the page of his director's script.

"So I sort of did as I was told really. I wore mostly what I was given to wear. And spoke as I was asked to speak and tried to create what was necessary. I had to say to Richard, tell me about him. What does he need to be for the story? How does he need to be? And I'm trying to create the character that way. It's not the way I normally do it, but there was just no time."

One of his favorite scenes to film is a pivotal scene in a church where he and Emma Thompson go toe-to-toe. "I had a bit of fun with it. I broke the set up," Irons said and laughed. Thompson's character is wearing the most ridiculous hat in the scene and the actors scores huge laughs from the audience when he disses her hat. But, on this particular day, Thompson was not in the shot and Irons got to make fun of another of Thompson's garments.

"She was standing beside the camera after doing her lines… and I had that line about her hat. I just put that in… but she changed out of her high heels and was wearing fluffy slippers. But, I threw in a line --because she didn’t have on that hat anymore -- to about her slippers! The nice thing about working with someone like Emma is you get back what you give."

With Irons' legendary status in the film world, it could be a daunting task for a young actor to appear opposite him. Particularly if that actor has to challenge him onscreen -- which both Ehrenreich and Anglert have to do repeatedly in the Beautiful Creatures trailer. The veteran knows exactly how to put his young co-stars at ease.

“I play the fool,” Irons said and smiled. After decades of working the craft, he keenly knows how it feels to perform. In fact, he is still just as unsure about his performance as the neophyte actor he was decades ago.

Beautiful Creatures Star Jeremy Irons

“We're all feeling insecure. We're all feeling we don't know how to do it. It's struggling to find the truth of the moment -- the truth of the character that tried to make a scene work. And so you work with each other completely as equals and I think actors very soon feel that, even young actors," Irons admitted.

"They see that you're a technician. You're an actor. You're a craftsman, and you might be older, you might be a little bit more experienced, but that doesn't always help."

Speaking of years of work, we wondered what movies in his esteemed career resonated most with him. "I’m very happy with about 80-percent of what I’ve been a part of. The other 20-percent I won’t mention because I’d like them to disappear," Irons said and laughed. "At the time, I must have done them for a reason!"

When it comes to films he wishes more people had seen, he takes no time in answering. "House of the Spirits, now, there’s a film which maybe didn’t get seen as widely as it should have. I saw it again and started watching it and I was immediately drawn into it. It’s wonderful little movie," Irons said.

"And it was made so long ago, that now I can see it very clearly. As an actor, it gave me a chance to play a man through the age of 80 -- that is wonderful to play an arc of a life. It’s great to see how you change."

Sam Mendes to Direct the Next Bond Film?

After the wild success of Skyfall, Sam Mendes is a hot commodity, especially when it comes to the James Bond franchise.

So when Mendes said that he wasn't sure if he would return to direct the next Bond, it caused a bit of worry amongst fans and studio heads alike. Mendes was initially reluctant to commit because writer John Logan was considering writing a two-part film that would need to be shot simultaneously, which would take four years to complete.

Now, it looks as though that plan has been scrapped, causing Mendes to rethink his position. Sources told Daily Mail that the director is "75%" committed to returning.

Skyfall has made $1.1 billion worldwide. Read through some Skyfall quotes to relive the film.

Weekend Movie Preview: February 15, 2013

The weekend movie preview offers something for all audiences whether it romance (Safe Haven), fantasy (Beautiful Creatures), action (A Good Day to Die Hard) and even something for the kids (Escape from Planet Earth).

So what should you see this weekend? Let's look a little closer...

A Good Day to Die Hard: Bruce Willis is back as John McClane, a role he originated 25 years ago. This time out Willis heads to Moscow to save his son (Jai Courtney) who he believes is in great danger. We have loved McClane for years and it is in some ways because he always seems to be a fish out of water. What better way to put that big fish in an enormous pond than to send him to Russia? As we state in our A Good Day to Die Hard review, John Moore has directed some of the best action sequences we've seen in some time and Willis is as charming as ever as the iconic character.

Beautiful Creatures: The wildly successful YA series hits the big screen. Authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl have established a universe unlike any other when it comes to the world of witches. Lena is about to turn 16 and that is a benchmark in the Caster (witch) world. She will either be claimed by good or evil. Things get complicated when she meets a handsome teen named Ethan who rocks her world. The cast is stellar including Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum and Emma Thompson. But, as we explore further in our Beautiful Creatures review, the film wouldn't work without the electric chemistry of its star-crossed lovers, Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich.

Safe Haven: Nicholas Sparks is at it again. After his The Lucky One debuted last year at Valentine's Day, he releases Safe Haven this year on the day of love. For those looking for a good old-fashioned Hollywood romance, look no further. Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel are terrific together and Sparks even adds a thriller element to his story that is new for the blockbuster author. For more on the film, check out our Safe Haven review.

Escape from Planet Earth: William Shatner does evil quite well in this new animated film that turns the alien invasion film on its head. The film is told from the point of view of the aliens where the people of Earth are the villains, specifically Shatner. The voice cast is beyond amazing with Sofia Vergara, Rob Corddry, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and George Lopez leading the way. Kids will simply adore this film and it is likely to be one of those that will be played on repeat on the DVD player for years to come. Our Escape from Planet Earth review finds it a little tedious at points for adults... but the joy on their children's faces will be worth it.

Best of Warner Bros. Musicals DVD Review: 20 Musical Titans!

The famous studio Warner Bros. is celebrating its 90th anniversary in the most spectacular fashion as it packages some of its best work in package collections. Fresh off the Best of Warner Bros. Best Pictures Collection, Movie Fanatic received a set with 20 of the studio's most iconic song and dance works.

Warner Bros. Best of Musicals

After scouring the 20 films, the question emerges for any musical movie fanatic: Could you ever want anything more? From The Wizard of Oz through Hairspray, the series is vast, varied and iconic.

The thing that most strikes Movie Fanatic is that there are numerous musicals here that not only define the genre, but have been given credit with pushing the envelope and bringing the movie musical to new heights.

Some set the standard, such as An American in Paris... one of Movie Fanatic's Top 100 of All-Time. Others served as virtual revolutions in the musical world. The Jazz Singer was the first talking motion picture and ushered in the cinematic era we still enjoy. Then there are films such as Viva Las Vegas where popular culture and the musical genre merged to create lightning in a bottle by bringing Elvis Presley to the big screen.

The most extraordinary thing about all these fine films are the actual musical numbers, some still stand as the best of the medium. Check out the video below of Gene Kelly belting out Singin' in the Rain and one can almost close our eyes and still see Kelly's magic moves because they have permeated our popular conscience.

And who could forget Liza Minnelli with her role of a lifetime delivering the iconic Come to the Cabaret from Cabaret!

Then there is the culture-defining excellence of Show Boat, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder in his iconic role, Julie Andrews' most challenging part in Victor/Victoria and the musical about a man-eating plant that still resonates today, Little Shop of Horrors.

Even more legendary films in the set include Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, 42nd Street, Yankee Doodle Dandy, A Star is Born, The Music Man and Camelot.

The question with this set is not whether to purchase... it is how soon?!

We're halfway through the first round of the Tournament of Movie Fanatic Franchise Bracket in order to determine the best movie franchise ever! The polls are still open for our previous matchups, Harry Potter vs. Star Trek, Batman vs. Superman, Star Wars vs. Scream, and Toy Story vs. Back to the Future.

Today, we turn our attention to the 3-seed Ghostbusters franchise vs. the 7-seed Bourne franchise. Vote for your favorite below, then scroll down to read about each franchise. Check out the full bracket at the bottom of the page, and come back every day for new matchups until a champion is crowned!

And theWinneris?

The Tournament of Movie Fanatic Franchises Bracket continues with a supernatural comedy series going head-to-head with an action series. Which franchise do you think is best: Ghostbusters or Bourne? Vote for which you think should move on to round 2! View Poll »

Ghostbusters Franchise:

Do two films a franchise make? In the case of Ghostbusters, we think so. Not only are the supernatural comedies some of the most culturally ingrained films of the last 30 years, they have also spawned a long-running animated TV show, a line of toys and merchandise that was incredibly ubiquitous in the 80's and 90's (I remember using grape-flavored Slimer toothpaste), and two catchphrases ("Who you gonna call? Ghost Busters!" and "I ain't 'fraid of no ghosts") that are still in the zeitgeist today!

The films followed parapsychologists Peter Vankman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, played by three of the best comedic minds of the 80's and beyond, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis, as they establish a paranormal exterminator service called Ghostbusters.

The film established a string of three successful comedic efforts by a then-young director Ivan Reitman, helping to launch his accomplished Hollywood career. And there maybe be a long-rumored Ghostbusters 3 on the way! Check out some Ghostbusters franchise quotes for more.

The Bourne Franchise:

Jason Bourne first burst into public consciousness on the pages of Robert Ludlum. But it was when Matt Damon inhabited the role in the first big screen film, The Bourne Identity, that the film became a standard for filming smart action thrillers.

The franchise has since spawned three other films and showed the power of its strength by even becoming a blockbuster without Damon. When Jeremy Renner stepped into the franchise with The Bourne Legacy, it was clear that audiences had a movie saga they adored.

The Bourne Identity would be followed by 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy and Damon’s final (is it?) chapter in The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007. Where the franchise goes from here is anyone’s guess. But if Movie Fanatic was to bet, Damon and Renner will join forces in a fifth film that will only further explode the Bourne franchise and set it up to go much further in the future. Head to our Bourne quotes page for more!

Beautiful Creatures: Richard LaGravenese on Crafting Magical Tale

$

0

Writer-director Richard LaGravenese has adapted books for the big screen before, including giving us those sweepingly romantic P.S. I Love You quotes and the gorgeous The Horse Whisperer. But there was something special about Beautiful Creatures and he couldn't wait to get to work.

Richard LaGravenese

"I loved the idea surrounding this Romeo and Juliet story, about a girl… or anyone, that at 16 when you don’t know who you are and your identity is not formed yet, you’re filled with all these feelings and passions and uncontrollable urges," LaGravenese said in our exclusive interview.

"In the book she’s heading towards this 'Claiming' where she will be claimed for good or evil. We all go through that where you reach a point in your life where you have to say to our parents, 'This is who I am. I’m not you. I’m not carrying your baggage anymore.' It's where we stop the inheritance of what came before us. Yet, how much of that is part of us anyway? The thing where how much is free will and how much is destiny. I love that idea."

That theme struck close to home for the helmer. "There was something universal about that wrapped in this story. Also, this boy Ethan was very much like me. I was born and raised in Brooklyn and my only goal was to get to New York City," LaGravenese said.

What he identified most with Ethan was much more cerebral -- their shared passion for the written page.

"I remember that summer of eating any Kurt Vonnegut books that I could get my hands on. When you’re at that age and you read something and you’re like, 'Where have you been?' you’re searching for reflections of the goals and the dreams that you have. I wanted to capture that in Beautiful Creatures."

What also is appealing is the thing that has turned young adult books into a full-on frenzy: Using the supernatural as a vehicle for telling a basically human story... shown here in a Beautiful Creatures clip.

"You get to fulfill the fantasy of having supernatural powers. I was a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and Joss Whedon started this great thing of using the supernatural medium as a metaphor of telling a story about human life. It’s not on the nose. It’s a great vehicle to entertain as you’re exploring these issues," LaGravenese said.

What he learned, as beautifully teased in this Beautiful Creatures trailer, is these stories are about the strength of being human. "We don’t have supernatural superpowers and realizing that you have the strength without the supernatural, is much more powerful."

Lena and Ethan Beautiful Creatures

But LaGravenese stresses that not every book belongs on the big screen. Some are better just left alone. "There are a lot of things I haven’t adapted, and they’re beautiful books that I love. I just don’t want to touch them. I don’t want them to be in another medium," he added.

"Sometimes great books should stay great books. But, when I read a book and get excited about it being a movie, then the fun of the translation becomes the process of doing that. As I’m reading a book, if I’m getting ideas of my own that I can put in there, it needs a translation."

When he took on the challenge of mounting a film based on a book beloved by millions, he left all expectations behind when he arrived on the set. "I didn’t read blogs, didn’t know what fans were saying," LaGravenese said. The book's authors, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl were immensely encouraging of his vision. "They were so supporting and never gave me a hint of doubt."

Whether the film works or not lies heavily on the shoulders of the film's leads, Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert. We wondered when did the director first see the spark that is electric?

"In rehearsal… and then I showed them a scene from My Girl Friday because we were working on the scene in the road in the rain, and they both got so excited by it, I thought, 'I’m in good hands.' I cast them separately without putting them together and yet they shared the same collective intelligence."

Earlier this year, we reported that Louis C.K. had joined the already star-studded cast of David O. Russell's newest, still-untitled project. Also joining on are Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale (is he the best Batman?), Amy Adams, and Silver Linings Playbook star Bradley Cooper.

Now, Russell will be reuniting with his other star from Silver Linings, Jennifer Lawrence!

Jennifer Lawrence Picture

Lawrence has received a Best Actress Oscar Nomination for her Silver Linings role. The film has garnered seven nominations in total, including Best Picture and Best Director. Read through some Silver Linings Playbook quotes to find out why.

The reunion of the three big players from that film, plus the addition of several other stars, should make for a pretty good result.

The new film is based on a real-life undercover sting operation in the 1980s that uncovered Congressional corruption. Production is expected to begin this month.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Remake Could Star Channing Tatum

It's been two years since David Fincher's last movie, an American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was released. Since then, Fincher has executive produced--and directed two episodes of--the Netflix series House of Cards.

Now, Fincher is looking towards his next project, a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. With the director's first-choice star Brad Pitt passing on the project, Fincher is looking at a number of actors to take the role. High on that list is Channing Tatum (Magic Mike).

Channing Tatum Photograph

Pitt has been a favorite collaborator of Fincher's in the past, starring in Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. With 20,00 Leagues "basically greenlit," however, Pitt apparently couldn't make the film fit within his schedule. In fact, all of Fincher's preferred actors are apparently unavailable.

The director is now weighing whether to postpone production until next year, or proceed with different actors, possibly including Tatum.

The 1954 movie, based on the book by Jules Verne, starred Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorre.

Top Gun: Tom Skerritt Reflects on Blockbuster

As Top Gun arrives on 3D Blu-Ray (and 2D), one of the film's stars phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to reflect on what made the Tom Cruise movie such a blockbuster. The film produced more than just Top Gun quotes, it made Cruise a superstar and he became a Hollywood icon in the process.

Tom Cruise Tom Skerritt Top Gun

When a film like Skerritt's arrives in a new format, here in 3D and on Blu-Ray -- check out its Top Gun 3D trailer -- it gives the actors involved in the filmmaking a chance to reflect. Skerritt admitted that he is still being saluted by fans for his work on the film.

"I am 27 years away from the high of making it. But, I’m still experiencing audience rewards," Skerritt said. Top Gun shows no signs of fading from our collective memory as it still strikes a chord with first-time viewers who become instant fans.

"Generations have gone and seen that film multiple times. It’s one of those films that always is embraced by younger generations in a way that I have not experienced in any other film."

It is often said that those involved in filming a movie have no idea how it will fare with audiences, much less how the film will even turn out. Having worked on many classics himself, including Alien, Skerritt said Top Gun was different.

"I’ve been in some other films prior to that where I could tell. But, in the middle of filming Top Gun, I knew that this was going to be something special," he admitted. "I thought it had a chance of being a classic, but I also felt that way about MASH, Turning Point and Alien. But this one, when I read it, and I knew Tony Scott was going to be directing it, that I wanted to do that film. Fortunately I was able to do it and the rest was history."

Top Gun is heralded as one of the first of the Bruckheimer hits. But, the film was made when he was partners with the late, great producer Don Simpson. "He was the one I talked to in the first place about Top Gun," Skerritt said of Simpson. As Simpson would soon pass away, the actor was witness to the birth of a blockbuster maker in Bruckheimer.

Tom Skerritt Tom Cruise Top Gun

"Once you meet the producers, they rarely come on the set. Bruckheimer was there more than Don Simpson. But Jerry, at that time, was fairly quiet and stayed in the background. Don did the talking! Once he was gone, Jerry surfaced as being very much a real power between the two of them. Jerry grew to the occasion."

The other "birthing" that happened when Top Gun arrived on screens was that it made a superstar out of Cruise. "He had some really intense focus," Skerritt recalled. "He has a great deal of integrity."

Looking back on his varied career, Skerritt said he is proud of what he has done, even if sometimes he felt there were roles he had to take. "You have a family, and you have to make a living, so you make some bad movies too. You get one of those and you wonder, 'What am I doing here?'" Skerritt said. Clearly, Top Gun is not one of them and more indicative of the great, still resonant work Skerritt has given us over the decades.

"I’m unusually fortunate, get a variety of films and have frankly a preference about what I do because I never wanted to be categorized."

Safe Haven: Lasse Hallstrom on Balancing Romance & Thrills

$

Safe Haven director Lasse Hallstrom knows a thing or two about crafting timeless romances. The Swedish helmer was the man behind Chocolat and The Cider House Rules, with the latter earning him an Oscar nomination.

Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel Safe Haven

As we state in our Safe Haven review, Hallstrom had the challenge of bringing Nicholas Sparks' latest page-to-screen effort alive with its new element for a Sparks story. He had to balance a thriller, all while still giving the romance aspect of the story all the beats it needed to be effective.

"It’s a balance act when you are balancing two genres like that," Hallstrom said in our exclusive interview. "Giving these two stories their due, we really didn’t figure that out until the editing process."

As teased in the Safe Haven trailer, the film stars Julianne Hough as a woman escaping a violent past who finds herself in a sleepy seaside North Carolina town. There she meets widowed shopkeeper Josh Duhamel, and the two fall for each other, all while this menacing force is seeking Hough's character out to destroy her.

"We had material in both worlds that we were juggling around. It’s hard to get a strong sense on the page in the script for how it works because it’s about the timing and the screen time you give the different things," Hallstrom admitted. "You have to ask, 'How long does this particular scene hold up for?' It was an editorial weighing of the material."

No romance film, much less a Sparks (he of those stellar The Notebook quotes) flick, will work unless there is chemistry between the two leads. The moment that Duhamel catches Hough's eye in the film, there is an instant buzz. It is not something Hallstrom noticed until a week into filming... and then it hit him like a ton of bricks.

Lasse Hallstrom Safe Haven

"I hadn’t gotten that strong sense yet as filming began. Josh didn’t come up for a couple days after Julianne had been there. So, I was working with her on her own and she really surprised me with her range and a depth. I enjoyed working with both of them. There was a loose improvisational there, and we had a healthy disrespect for the written material," Hallstrom said and laughed.

"It is a challenge to tell a story about a romance in small and subtle increments. It’s hard to capture how people fall in love. It’s not easy. It’s tricky. You want to be real with it and not sentimental. But, you’re straddling a line."

Saving Lincoln: Salvador Litvak Talks Passion Project

There is quite the unique story about our most popular president that has yet to be told. As Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln makes its Academy Awards run, filmmaker Salvador Litvak is releasing Saving Lincoln. All this Lincoln mania of late has found a special story in Litvak's film that shows a side of the man who saved the union, as teased in our Saving Lincoln exclusive clip.

Lea Coco Saving Lincoln.

When Abraham Lincoln became president, he brought his Illinois-based best friend with him to Washington. Ward Hill Lamb would serve as the bodyguard for probably the most divisive president the nation had seen, up until that point.

“We had been trying to make a Lincoln movie for a long time,” Litvak said in our exclusive interview.

He and his writing partner wife, Nina Davidovich, were both Lincoln fanatics. For Davidovich, it began when she was six years old and she found a book at home of Lincoln’s jokes. She was struck that this serious guy had his own joke book.

Litvak identified with Lincoln on many levels as well. “I was too tall -- as I kid I stuck out. I was an outsider. And then there’s this guy who, when you look at Abraham Lincoln he doesn’t look like a president, and yet he presided over this nation’s greatest crisis,” he said.

“By the virtue of his determination to save it, he did. He did it at a time when it was not a given that democracy was viable. And it looks like it was going to fall apart. Lincoln knew that if the American experiment fell apart, the idea of a people’s government would fall apart.”

When they first sat down to write their Lincoln tale twelve years ago, there hadn’t been a Lincoln movie for decades and it seemed obvious that this was a great story. “We loved him, and so we wondered who does Lincoln love? That’s where we discovered Ward Hill Lamb. He loved Mary (Lincoln) and Lamb. He was the only buddy he brought from Illinois,” Litvak said.

Their idea was to take their Lincoln movie to the studios. “After two years of work, our agent set a date to take us to the studios on a Friday. That Wednesday, Steven Spielberg announced he was making a Lincoln movie,” Litvak admitted.

“He had Tom Hanks to play Lincoln, a book by Doris Kearns Goodwin that was unpublished at that moment. Everyone’s going to get an Oscar! At that moment, it’s not that no one would buy our story, no one would read it. That was painful for us. But, I don’t give up on things.”

They figured Spielberg would make his movie and a few years would go by and they could then make theirs. “But… he was not making his Lincoln movie,” he said and laughed. “For five years it was Tom Hanks, and for another five years it was Liam Neeson. They weren’t making it. We had a Lincoln project ready to go.”

So, they decided to make their Lincoln movie independently. “Everyone thought we were insane. You can’t make that kind of movie independently,” Litvak said. “I thought there was a way. We green lit ourselves.”

They knew that this Lamb guy and his connection with Lincoln popped off the pages of Saving Lincoln. “It’s fascinating and a forgotten guy. He was closer to Lincoln than anybody. Mary became incapacitated with grief, migraines, and Lincoln spent more time with Lamb than with Mary,” Litvak said.

Tom Amandes Saving Lincoln

Litvak had the story, but how to make a movie with practically nothing?

“Doing so much research, I spent a lot of time in the online division of the Library of Congress, particularly photographs of this era. I would look at these pictures to get an idea of the landscape that this movie would take place,” he said.

The director would shoot his actors, and digitally insert the background from the Library of Congress. It was a movie created with a distinctive filmmaking process -- an inherently clever way of capturing a historical epic feel, with an independent movie budget.

“Even though the lenses were primitive, they were very dense and have a distinctive look to them. And the Library of Congress had digitized them and they looked amazing. And it’s available to anyone in the public. You can just download them. I thought, ‘We could make the movie out of this.’”

James Bond Movies:

James Bond first landed in 1953 on the pages of the Ian Fleming book Casino Royale. Fleming’s novels would shape the character onscreen for years after his passing, and set the standard for the franchise that is still honored today with Daniel Craig in the role.

The first Bond film, Dr. No, arrived in 1962 with Scottish actor Sean Connery in the lead. Americans began their obsession with 007 when President John F. Kennedy was asked what movie he was looking forward to most. When he said, “Dr. No,” a phenomenon was born.

Fifty years and 23 films later, the British superspy has enthralled billions of fans and raked in billions of dollars. No franchise in the history of film has had that kind of run, much less that kind of success. And with Skyfall being the most successful of the Bond franchise, this adventure shows no signs of slowing. Read some Bond quotes for more.

Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy:

This is perhaps the least "franchisey" franchise in our bracket, but we think it absolutely deserves to be here. The loosely-connected "thematic franchise"includes the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the upcoming movie The World's End.

While the films feature different characters and plotlines, they all reuse the same key players, and all feature the same biting wit and ominous supernatural elements. Also referred to as the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, the series uses a new flavor of Cornetto ice cream in each film, to signify the different storylines.

Pegg and Wright have brilliantly merged elements of nerd culture, sci-fi, horror, and comedy in a way that has scarcely been seen before. The franchise stands out from other supernatural, horror, or sci-fi comedies like Zombieland, Men In Black, and even the Ghostbusters franchise, because of the uniquely crisp and modern visual style, the bizarre secondary characters, and the unparalleled humor that comes from placing a completely relatable protagonist in a completely outlandish situation.
