Frozen: Watch Let it Go in 25 Languages!

0
0

Music has long been referred to as the universal language that bonds us together. That has never been truer than when it comes to Disney’s Frozen and the track that we think is a lock to win Best Song at the Oscars, Let it Go. Disney has released a video that shows the song in the 25 languages that the movie was translated to and it, like the movie itself, is truly magical.

Frozen has become a global hit (and its soundtrack has topped the charts, even knocking off Beyonce!), and is now the second highest grossing animated film in Disney history… right behind The Lion King.

When we spoke to Idina Menzel, who recorded the song as the character Elsa in the movie, she reported that she knew immediately that this track was something truly special. The fact that it has been so resonant the world over speaks volumes as to the power of the track that belongs right alongside some of the famed studio’s best songs of all time.

And for fans of the film, be sure to mark your calendars as the Frozen DVD release date has been announced!

Better Living Through Chemistry Trailer: Sam Rockwell Rivets Again!

0
0

Better Living Through Chemistry is now much more than the name of the debut album by Fatboy Slim and a popular phrase from the LSD-laced 1960s. It is the moniker of the latest Sam Rockwell (The Way Way Back) movie, and the film’s first trailer has premiered.

Rockwell plays a mild-mannered pharmacist who toils away at a job he enjoys and is married to a woman that he loves (whether she loves him is another question). Basically, he seems content to go about his days until his number is up.

Then, when his delivery guy flakes, he has to deliver the prescriptions on his own and meets Olivia Wilde (Rush). She’s a trophy wife and takes Rockwell under her wing as the two go on a drug and alcohol binge for the ages. And yes, it appears from the above trailer that she convinces Rockwell to kill her husband, you know, through chemistry!

The trailer alone is proof of what a talent Rockwell is, and we cannot wait to see him in this film that lands March 14. He goes from straight-laced to completely unhinged as no one else can in less than two minutes!

Oscar Watch: Who Is the Favorite Now?

0
0

Now that the Oscar nominations have been announced, it may seem clear who the front runners are: With 10 nominations each, Gravity and American Hustle. But, we wouldn’t count out 12 Years a Slave. See, the SAG Awards, the Golden Globes and other guild honors have been bestowed and one would think that there would be an Oscar favorite for Best Picture that has emerged. In fact, it is more confusing than ever.

Oscar Favorites

Our latest Oscar Watch looks at where we stand as the true Academy Awards campaigning has begun. Do we have a favorite? The short answer is... kind of.

American Hustle took top honors at the SAG Awards and since actors are the largest voting block it might be easy to anoint that David O. Russell film as the one to beat. But it is not that simple. The Producers Guild also has had the honor of choosing the last six Best Picture winners for the Academy Awards based on who they anointed at their annual fete. Well, this year was a never-happened-before tie with Gravity and 12 Years a Slave earning top honors for the Producers.

For years, it was always a case that the film that scored the most nominations was your front-runner, but recent history dictates that that is not necessarily true anymore, particularly with the cluttered mess we have this year.

12 Years a Slave scored an important win last Friday at the Critics Choice Movie Awards for Best Picture, but it essentially had to share that honor with the Best Comedy winner, American Hustle. Toss in the fact that Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron won in his category at the Critics Choice Movie Awards and it would appear the race to Oscar gold is as tight as ever. In fact, it may be the closest race in history.

Oscar Watch will make predictions as we get closer to the biggest night in Hollywood in every single one of the categories and will break down each of the major categories as the weeks go on. But, from where we are sitting at this moment in time, so early in the race, if we had to answer the above question when it comes to who is the front-runner, it is truly a three-way tie between 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Gravity.

But, if you put a gun to our head and made us choose... Well, look at this fact. Given that 70 percent of the time, in the last 20 years, the winner of Best Director and Best Picture come from the same movie, we would have to give the edge to Gravity. There is no way that Cuaron does not win his first Oscar for Best Director.

And given the fact that the film is also tied for the most nominations with 10, I’d say -- by the smallest of hairs -- the Cuaron movie is the favorite. For now.

Star Wars Episode VII: Carrie Fisher Reveals Expected Start Date!

We’ve long felt that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would return to a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Episode VII. With her appearance on TV’s number one comedy, The Big Bang Theory, Fisher confirmed as much in an interview with TV Guide when she revealed that the big three were expected on set sometime in “March or April.”

Star Wars Photo

Well, there you have it. That is as much of a confirmation as we’ve gotten that Luke, Leia and Han will be in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII. And as to what Fisher would like for her character, she mentioned her iconic hairstyle from the first film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

“I’d like to wear my old (cinnamon buns) hairstyle again -- but with white hair,” she said. “I think that would be funny.”

Given that Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over the screenwriting duties and Abrams now reporting that the Star Wars Episode VII script is done, we suspect that the first film out of the gate will focus on the original three, with subsequent chapters focusing on their children. I would even go so far as to bet that one (we’re guessing Han), and perhaps all three, will meet their maker, thus giving the seeking justice aspect to their children going after the dark forces who are rearing their ugly heads once again.

Our favorite casting rumor so far… Michael Fassbender as a Dark Sith Lord. How do you like them apples?

Has Katniss Made a Movie Mark Like Luke Skywalker?

We have to admit, the ending of Catching Fire was pretty spectacular. Just as we were ready to close our mouths from that massive jaw drop, the film’s credits rolled. Hot on the heels of the release of the first Mockingjay Part 1 poster, news arrives that that film will be making its presence felt at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and of course, this summer’s Comic-Con.

Katniss in Catching Fire

Now, back to that ending: Lionsgate production president Erik Feig feels that the close of Catching Fire ranks up there with… Star Wars!

"Not since Luke Skywalker shot into the Death Star has one person had that kind of impact in a franchise film,” he said.

“What I really love about how (Jennifer Lawrence) plays that character is that Katniss is larger than life and yet she wears her emotions in a very relatable way. She’s not a superhero by any stretch -- she’s all too human in the face of extreme conditions -- and she faces them with the presence of mind that we all wish we had."

So tell us...

Do you think that the end of Catching Fire ranks up with the end of Star Wars?

Pan: Garrett Hedlund Offered Role of Captain Hook

Captain Hook is one of the great movie villains and we’re going to get to visit him anew as director Joe Wright is tackling the world of Peter Pan for his next film. The film, Pan, will explore the person who refused to grow up’s origins and how he became the iconic figure he has. And as Robert Downey Jr. told us in our Iron Man 3 interview, a hero is only as good as his villain, and there is one of the best in Captain Hook.

Now news has arrived that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has been offered the role of Hook. We think he will make a masterful Captain Hook.

Garrett Hedlund Photo

No word as to casting of the rest of the roles, stay tuned as Pan has us seriously intrigued.

And you want to know how confident Warner Bros. is in the potential for Pan? It has taken the heavily desired release date left when Batman vs. Superman moved its release date from 2015 to 2016!

Maleficent Teaser Teases Grammy Trailer

Music’s biggest night, The Grammys, is not normally known for a night being big with the movies. Although they do award a best soundtrack Grammy, normally studios are holding out the big trailer reveals for the following Sunday and the Super Bowl. But Disney is teasing with the latest video below, a new spot promised for Maleficent to air during the Grammy. Awards.

They’re calling it the Maleficent “Dream” Teaser and one can see why on many levels. Its feel is dreamlike, and seeing Angelina Jolie as the Sleeping Beauty villain is also a dream come true!

Want further proof? Check out the first theatrical Maleficent trailer and admit that she was not born to play the role!

A Million Ways to Die in the West Photo: Charlize Theron Takes Aim

Universal has released the latest A Million Ways to Die in the West photo and it features the big four in the cast: Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris, Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron. We love how Theron is taking aim, ready to fire both her pistols. At what, we wonder?

A Million Ways to Die in the West Charlize Theron

A Million Ways to Die in the West is the MacFarlane follow-up to Ted and as is clearly obvious from the above photo is that he has added western to his usual comedy flair. We can’t think of a “funny” western… since Blazing Saddles. If that’s what MacFarlane is going for, he has a lot to live up to. But, then again, he has a lot riding on A Million Ways to Die in the West anyway. After the success of Ted, so much so that we have a Ted 2 coming, anticipation could not be higher for his next project.

We’ll find out when the film hits theaters May 30… oh, and it also stars Liam Neeson and Sarah Silverman. That’s quite a cast!

The Nut Job Gets a Sequel: Getting Nuttier?

The squirrels and other park creatures in The Nut Job will be back. After the film’s impressive $25 million opening weekend, Open Road has announced that the gang will be back for “one more job.”

The Nut Job Will Arnett

The film, co-produced by Open Road, ToonBox Entertainment and Gulfstream Pictures, caught box office experts off guard when it came in second at the box office, even beating out a legendary character’s return with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Given that we said in our The Nut Job review that the film will have kids going nuts, the younger set ought to be thrilled with this news!

The studio announced that the entire cast will be back, including Will Arnett and Katherine Heigl, for the sequel that will land January 15, 2016.

Might we suggest a title: The Nuttier Job?!

About Last Night Red Band Trailer: Love Hurts!

Screen Gems has released a new Valentine’s Day-themed red band trailer for their upcoming rom-com About Last Night. The film is a re-imagining of the 1980s classic that starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. As shown in the first About Last Night trailer, the film stars the man of the moment, Kevin Hart (Ride Along), along with Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryan, Christopher McDonald and Paula Patton.

The film follows the reality that is modern relationships that commence with a hook-up, and then progress into the sometimes shocking realism that is a modern and mature relationship. Or, as is the case with Hart and Hall’s character, a series of hilarious fights!

Look for About Last Night on… Valentine’s Day!

The X-Men: Days of Future Past Instagram feed has released a lightning fast series of impressive footage from their upcoming film, all teasing what is being called a “full day of X-Men surprises” on January 27.

The footage above looks amazing and it is so worthy of multiple viewings to catch it all as it moves so fast. That first (and only!) X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer was so awesome, we named it one of our Top 10 Movie Trailers of 2013. Judging by the date of January 27, we’re guessing there won’t be a Super Bowl X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer, although one can dream.

X-Men: Days of Future Past lands in theaters May 23 and features the best of the X-Men movies including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman from the past, and Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy from the present!

I, Frankenstein Exclusive: Director Dishes Aaron Eckhart's Monster "Committment"

0
0

Director Stuart Beattie had has hand full when bringing the classic Mary Shelley creature born in Frankenstein to the modern age. We could tell that he was well on his way to achieving that the moment that first I, Frankenstein trailer landed. We talked to him about that and more for an exclusive interview when Beattie phoned us from New York.

Aaron Eckhart I, Frankenstein Star

We wondered what was so special about star Aaron Eckhart that he was the perfect choice to be Frankenstein’s monster and the challenges involved in bringing the classic monster into the 21st century. Beattie also talks about the challenges of simultaneously staying true to the Shelley monster, while still having him break into new territory. And most of all, we asked Beattie why we’re still so fascinated by Frankenstein after two centuries.

Movie Fanatic: What was it about Aaron Eckhart that he was the guy to be Frankenstein’s monster, here known as Adam?

Stuart Beattie: It’s his level of commitment to all the roles that he plays. Think about a bad Aaron Eckhart performance. There isn’t one! I knew that everyone that is coming to see a Frankenstein movie is coming in with their own preconceived notions of what Frankenstein is. So, I knew that whoever was playing that role had a job to get everyone over their own notion of the monster and then, making audiences believe that this is what the character should be. It was double duty. The only way to do that is to commit to the role and if you look at the six months of training he did for the role -- all that, that first day when he walked on set in the hair and the makeup, he was the creature. The whole set went quiet. It was like the birth of Frankenstein. It started day one, and went through the very end. It was one of those amazing performances to be watching it, and for me to be directing it.

I, Frankenstein Aaron Eckhart

Movie Fanatic: The idea of bringing Frankenstein into modern day is a fascinating venture with I, Frankenstein. What were the unique challenges of achieving that while keeping him true to what has come before?

Stuart Beattie: The first part was staying true to the character that Mary Shelley created, keeping as that guy. It’s the classic, “what does the character want and why can’t they have it.” He’s a character who is alone and wants a companion, that’s what he’s after -- keeping that as the major drive, even 200 years later -- that had to keep it current with Shelley. If anything, the years have made him harder and more bitter and more determined to get this. Also, showing that things never change, people still look at him because he’s got scars. It’s a matter of showing that human nature hasn’t changed in all the years in recorded history. We are alone. We search for companionship. Then we pass away and what do we leave behind? All those things are wrapped up in that character, whether it’s 1795 or 2014. We didn’t want him using a cell phone [laughs]. In a very connected world, it’s very hard to do.

Movie Fanatic: Helming this journey had to be a momentous effort. What particular moments do you feel that you learned the most about yourself?

Stuart Beattie: Each day had its own merits. The stick fight scene was a big thing. There was a year and a half of convincing people that it would look really cool. No one believed me, until we got there on the day and everyone went, “Whoa!” Also making the gargoyles look cool was a big deal for me. No one could believe that they would look as awesome as they did. When we got them to fruition, I could not have been prouder. There was a lot of fighting for something that I wanted and one day having the doubters realize you were on to something, that was powerful. There were a lot of new concepts, and I get it, it’s hard to embrace new concepts.

Movie Fanatic: We’ve talked about how you kept Mary Shelley’s story alive, but how do you feel you’ve stretched it and taken it into new places?

Aaron Eckhart I Frankenstein

Stuart Beattie: We show how the monster has really earned his humanity. This is really about how he becomes human and what makes us human. The idea of serving a higher purpose and he does that. That represents the best of the human condition.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think it is about the Frankenstein story that we’re still fascinated with the big guy after centuries?

Stuart Beattie: I think the story of Victor Frankenstein is the ability to cheat death. Because, we’re all looking at that and we all would love to cheat it. In a way, Victor’s obsession is our obsession. That will never go away because it’s part of the human condition. When it comes to the monster’s story, I think it also stays with us because he has that great universally relatable character trait of feeling alone. He always feels that there’s no one out there in the world for him. He’s doomed to be alone for the rest of his life. In this case, it’s literally true. For us, there is no one on Earth who doesn’t know what that feels like. We’ve all had that longing to spend our lives with someone. It’s part of human nature to connect. That’s all the monster wants.

Ant-Man Takes Batman vs. Superman Release Date

Like a supertanker that is been taken out of the ocean, the ripple effects are still being felt when it was announced that the Batman vs. Superman release date was being pushed almost a year. First, Warner Bros. moved up its Joe Wright origins story of Peter Pan, Pan, that rumors have Garrett Hedlund as Hook. Now, Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man has now moved up to the July 17, 2015.

Ant-Man Logo

Fresh off the announcement that Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas have been cast as the various incarnations of Ant-Man, Disney and Marvel had to be drooling at the prospect of moving their introduction to a new Marvel character to movie audiences when the heard another superhero franchise was taking more time.

Even without Batman vs. Superman in summer 2015, we still feel history will say that it was one of the best summer movie seasons of all time!

And by the way, notice that July 17, 2015 will feature two movies directed by a guy named Wright coming out on the same weekend?!

I, Frankenstein Review: Rejuvenation or Retread?

0
0

The idea of bringing Frankenstein’s monster into modern day is in many ways not terribly original.

Inspiration from the Mary Shelley classic story can be seen in movies such as the upcoming RoboCop, and of course its 1980s original. I, Frankenstein seeks to break itself apart from the inspiration pack and truly forge itself as a film that takes the iconic monster and literally puts him in our modern world.

I, Frankensein Aaron Eckhart Poster

Aaron Eckhart is Frankenstein’s monster in the Stuart Beattie written and directed film. We meet him back in the late 1700s after the “mad” scientist with an obsession with finding a way to defeat death itself created him from the parts of corpses.

We all know the story from the pages of Shelley’s book as to what happens next. But, Beattie adds a wrinkle… gargoyles interrupt a plot to capture Eckhart’s monster by demons who seek his secret-to-life rejuvenation as he is burying the good doctor.

This battle of gargoyles versus demons is at the heart of the film, as teased from that first I, Frankenstein trailer.

The story takes place in a nameless European city where we’re shown cars and other modern conveniences, but it feels like something out of the middle ages. Much of the continent’s cities feel gothic, so that is no revelation as far as the production design. But, it just seems like a surprise, given the desire of those involved in I, Frankenstein to make this a tale of what would happen to Frankenstein in 2014. Why not set it in New York?

Bill Nighy is a mysterious executive who oversees a lab where Yvonne Strahovski is a doctor of electrical physiology. She is on the verge of re-creating Frankenstein’s experiment when suddenly the battle between demons and gargoyles produces Frankenstein's monster right in the middle of her world.

What better way to help her experiments progress?!

There’s some subplot about Nighy and his desire to reincarnate thousands of dead souls and make them demons to increase the evildoers' chances of taking over the world. Now, those gargoyles, they are here on Earth to ensure the continuation of the human race and keep evil at bay. So, naturally they’re going to battle. Eckhart’s monster (known as Adam in the movie) will hold the key and Strahovski will play a vital role, albeit unwillingly.

I, Frankenstein Aaron Eckhart Yvonne Strahovski

Even though that seems like quite a lot of plot reveal, there is so much more to the I, Frankenstein story. It’s just that in our I, Frankenstein review, we wanted to establish how convoluted the entire thing is, based on what little we’ve told you. There are thrills and the action sequences are aplenty and feel like they're out of a Highlander movie meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The problem is that it is just too much. Eckhart, we know from back story, cannot be killed. So, where’s the suspense in that?

Movie Fanatic wanted to be blown away by I, Frankenstein. It is just that for a film that sought to put Frankenstein’s monster in a modern world, it sure felt like the same old song.

The LEGO Movie Featurette: Behind the Bricks!

After seeing The LEGO Movie, we can firmly say that it takes tongue-in-cheek to a whole new level of awesome. In fact, Everything Is Awesome in the world of LEGOs, and as shown in a new behind-the-scenes video from Warner Bros. the cast has been impeccably chosen for their ability to embrace the awesomeness of the ridiculous.

Want proof? How about the cast addressing the camera as their characters, talking about the actors who play them? We love Will Arnett talking about being Batman because they couldn’t get Clooney. And how about Chris Pratt dishing how the character of Emmett being played by Pratt must have made the movie very expensive?

Then, there’s the scene where Morgan Freeman reads the phone book. Yeah, that.

The LEGO Movie hits theaters February 7. Put. It. On. Your. Calendars!

Should Josh Holloway Be Aquaman: Vote Now!

0

As we reported earlier this week, the Batman vs. Superman release date has been moved from summer 2015 to summer 2016. The switch was made to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle were properly put together and to ensure director Zack Snyder would have time for a post-production process that could be lengthy to say the least. But, there’s also the thought that given the rumors that Snyder will helm a Justice League movie immediately after he’s done with Batman vs. Superman that could play into the delay.

Josh Holloway Picture

We’ve got several of the pieces in place, including the obvious ones: Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. And then there’s the rumor that Dwayne Johnson will be Green Lantern! So, that Justice League is almost completely populated.

Now there’s one Justice League character that has an actor’s name being swirled around here in Hollywood and we could not be more thrilled at the prospect. Just say it out loud: Josh Holloway as Aquaman!

At the recent Television Critics Association, where Holloway was discussing his CBS hit Intelligence, he said that it was “cool to be considered, and that, like any actor with a pulse and a mortgage,” he would love to do it.

The problem is, as it would be with Stephen Arnell playing Green Arrow in The Justice League movie (with his demanding Arrow schedule), he is attached to a TV show.

"I’m in a series right now,” Holloway said. “I think they usually want to sign you up for several movies and I don’t know if you can do that when you’re committed to a series."

Tell us what you think.

Would Josh Holloway make a good Aquaman in The Justice League?

Weekend Movie Preview: January 24, 2014

0
0

The weekend movie preview only has one new film arriving in theaters this weekend, I, Frankenstein, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bevy of fantastic movies out there to entertain. We look at I, Frankenstein and several of the recent Oscar nominees who are still in theaters, as well as the movie that made a big splash last weekend, Ride Along

I, Frankenstein: Aaron Eckhart is Frankenstein's monster in a movie that shows what his world is like 200 years after Dr. Victor Frankenstein created him. As we stated in our I, Frankenstein review, for a film that is supposed to feel as if it has taken a monster and brought him into the 21st century, it sure feels like a Frankenstein movie of old. Eckhart is terrific, as is Bill Nighy as a villain, but there is little here that is worthy of the update that filmmakers were hoping for.

Already in theaters:

Ride Along: Last week's number one movie broke box office records and rightfully so. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube make a terrific action-comedy tandem and we suspect a sequel is already in the works. Hart is a high school security guard who is seeking the approval of Cube's Atlanta detective to marry his sister. Once Hart gets accepted to the police academy, Cube comes up with a great idea to show Hart he is not worthy of being a cop, much less marrying his sister. Why not go on a Ride Along? Check out our Ride Along review for more.

American Hustle: Leading the pack of recent Oscar nominees that are still in theaters, David O. Russell's epic true tale of political corruption in New Jersey is clearly one of the front-runners to win Best Picture. As reported in our American Hustle review, this is a fine example of ensemble acting from the recently SAG Award-winning cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner.

The Wolf of Wall Street: Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese's fifth film together is their absolute best. Another true story (like American Hustle above) also stars the Oscar-nominated Jonah Hill (joining DiCaprio with acting honors and the movie which scored a Best Picture nod) and rivets every step of the way, even at three hours. Our The Wolf of Wall Street review explores how a film that may seem long, finishes with the audience wanting much more.

12 Years a Slave: Another Best Picture nominee is still in theaters and a must-see if there ever was one. Sure, it's difficult to watch, but it is one that has to be seen. Acting nominations abound for this film, and rightfully so. From top to bottom, this is a tour-de-force that chronicles what happens to a free black man living in New York who is kidnapped and forced into 12 years of slavery. And yes, it too is a true tale. Our 12 Years a Slave review delves deeper.
