Harry and Lloyd are back and they are dumber than ever as the latest Dumb and Dumber To TV spot has landed and gives us some new footage (and some new laughs).

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return to the roles that gave us those Dumb and Dumber quotes two decades ago and this time out they’re hitting the road to find Daniels’ daughter that he never knew about.

Carrey may or may not have the hots for her. “That’s insane!” he says in the above teaser. But, is it, Jim?

Dumb and Dumber To also stars Rob Riggle, Kathleen Turner and lands in theaters November 14.

Blade Runner 2: Ridley Scott Talks “Clever” Sequel

When it was announced that a new Blade Runner was in the works, fans were outraged that one of their favorite sci-fi films would be getting a follow-up. Then, it appeared that that Blade Runner reboot would in fact be a sequel. But, how could that be without Harrison Ford or director Ridley Scott?

Harrison Ford in Blade Runner

Good news arrived when Scott said he’d be willing to do a Blade Runner 2 if the script was right and it appears that he likes what he sees. And then there’s the reaction of Ford, who appears to be softening on his distaste of returning to the characters that made him famous, a la coming back to Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII.

So this Blade Runner 2 thing is moving forward without a doubt and Scott is even talking about it a bit in an interview with Yahoo Movies UK.

"It's on the charts. I can't say when that would be yet, because of [Ford's] thing with Star Wars,” Scott said. “It's a sequel. It's what happens next. It's quite surprisingly clever."

Dracula Untold Featurette Explores Origins: Finding the Fangs

What was so compelling to us from the moment we saw that first Dracula Untold trailer is that this is the Prince of Darkness origins story we’ve been waiting for.

Sure, we know all about Dracula and the man he was before, Vlad. But, have we ever really seen, in modern cinema, a visually stunning and dramatic look at “why” the man who appeared to have so much threw it all away to become one who can never die and one who must feast on human blood?

Check out the featurette just released by Universal for Dracula Untold and further get teased for this flick that lands October 10.

Luke Evans stars as Vlad, aka Dracula, and when you see why he makes the choices he makes, you might wonder if you would have done the same thing!

Dracula Untold also stars Dominic Cooper as our bad guy (he did that role well in Need for Speed), Sarah Gadon and Diarmaid Murtagh.

What makes Blackhat so truly special is it marks the return of director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) in the genre where he is most triumphant.

Universal has released a series of stills (in our slideshow below!) as well from the thriller that lands January 16, 2015. And in the meantime, check out Hemsworth’s latest and watch Thor: The Dark World online.

The latest Big Hero 6 trailer has arrived and it gives us so much more than any prior trailer. Disney’s latest is based on a beloved Marvel comic and comes from the makers of Frozen, Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph.

The story follows a young robotics prodigy named Hiro (Scott Adsit) as he sees a threat to his beloved city of San Fransokyo that no one else seems to see.

The teenager will gather his friends and with his keen knowledge of science and robotics, help to form a group of heroes the likes of which we’ve never seen.

And with a little bit of luck (and smarts!), they will save the day.

Big Hero 6 lands in theaters November 7 and also features the voice talents of T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr. and Genesis Rodriguez.

Disney also released three new stills from Big Hero 6 -- check them out in our slideshow below.

19 October Must-See Movies: Oh, The Horror!

$

The calendar is about to read October and for Hollywood studios that means two things.

First, horror is on the brain as Halloween looms around the corner.

Second, Oscar season is in full bloom as some of the biggest contenders for the medium’s highest awards will be landing this month.

It worked well for Gone Girl (October 3) star Ben Affleck when you watch Argo online. That film landed in October a few years back, and it won Best Picture!

There are probably more horror movies set to land this October that we actually want to see than in any October in recent memory. And Hollywood wastes no time in rolling out the first as Annabelle lands to scare us on October 3. The prequel to the movie you can see when you watch The Conjuring online centers on that horrific looking doll who seems to inspire people to do the most devilish of things!

Also, we cannot wait for Brad Pitt to return to World War II for the first time since the film you can check out when you watch Inglorious Basterds online with Fury on October 17.

We have 19 movies that should be on your radar (it’s quite a month!), and we break them down and let you know what all the buzz is about.

So, click through and witness our 19 October must-see movies.

Men, Women & Children
Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) returns and tackles the bestselling book of the same name. Men, Women & Children stars Jennifer Garner, Adam Sandler and a slew of others as it looks at how the internet has changed our lives, and mostly -- our children. Jupiter Ascending Trailer: Channing Tatum & His Ears Save Earth!

$

After a few delays, it’s nice to see a new Jupiter Ascending trailer arrive! The film was supposed to land this summer, and was pushed to February 6, 2015, and from what we can tell from the new footage, the latest from the Wachowskis will more than be worth the wait.

Channing Tatum stars as an alien solider who is sent to Earth to grab Mila Kunis before evil forces get to her first. See, we learn in the above teaser, that Earth was “seeded” hundreds of thousands of years ago and some of those that are responsible for our being are not exactly the nicest aliens in the galaxy.

The key to our future is Kunis’ princess, who doesn’t even know she’s an interstellar royal.

Thus far, any promotional footage for Jupiter Ascending has focused on the action sequences, and what is such a treat about the latest trailer is how the Wachowskis are letting us in on some deeper plot points, namely the universe and its politics. It sure sounds a lot more deep than once thought.

And in hindsight, sounds exactly like the people who gave us Cloud Atlas and The Matrix.

Jimi All Is By My Side Review: Stuck in a Purple Haze

$

We recently presented our 23 best music biopics and reported that there is something uniquely fascinating about the life of a musician that is so conducive to success within the institution that is the biographical motion picture. With the arrival of Jimi: All Is By My Side, the late guitar god Jimi Hendrix gets the spotlight.

Andre Benjamin Jimi All Is By My Side

You will not hear one single hit from the six-string maestro's library, and that is exactly as writer-director John Ridley wants it. And for his film, that is just perfect.

Andre Benjamin is Hendrix and as we first meet him -- teased in the Jimi: All Is By My Side trailer -- he’s a Seattle transplant living in Harlem who is toiling as the guitarist for a so-so band. He meets Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), a British “model” who is best known for being Keith Richards' girlfriend. She convinces Hendrix to go solo and her efforts are rewarded over time with some serious polishing of the artist's image as she felt would hit the right notes. She hooks him up with a former member of The Animals as his manager, moves him to London and as they say, the rest is history.

Yet, Ridley shows us that success did not come immediately for Hendrix in London, as he thought it would and as he was promised. And Jimi: All Is By My Side chronicles those difficult days and nights and is populated with a who’s-who of British rock, including Eric Clapton and The Beatles. It’s quite a production design that Ridley and his team have accomplished, but what’s even more impressive is the performance by Benjamin.

He is Hendrix.

The man is not known for being an actor (other than a few roles in films such as Semi-Pro and Idlewild) and we largely know him as Andre 300 from Outkast.

Benjamin nails Hendrix’s nuances, his movement, his speech patterns and above all else, his persona. There was an effortless air to the rock legend and it is clear that not only has Benjamin done his homework, but he has the talent to execute a performance worthy of someone that looms so largely over popular culture.

Jimi: All Is By My Side Andre Benjamin Imogen Poots

But, our issue with Jimi: All Is By My Side is the film’s pacing is way off. It lumbers and falters on more than one occasion and all the fantastic sets, costumes, acting, and yes, music in the world cannot save that.

There are dramatic pauses that seem to be completely out of left field. If there was ever a story that could live and breathe on its own, it’s Hendrix’s. Yet, the audience never feels it having too much of a pulse, except when Benjamin is Hendrix and he’s playing music.

Poots is one of the best things about the movie as well. Yet, there is not enough of her in the film. She completely drops out of the picture for the middle act and then when she finally returns, it’s unfortunately too late to pick up the power that was its pitch when her character faded into the background.

Our Jimi: All is By My Side review finds that the film is a worthy chronicle of the beginning days of a rock god’s journey into fame’s blinding light. It’s just not the first class ride it deserved.

The Boxtrolls Review: Not Cheesy in the Slightest

$

After the groundbreaking work that LAIKA did with their first feature Coraline and then breaking down more doors with their second, the perfect ParaNorman, expectations are quite high for their third film -- The Boxtrolls.

The Boxtrolls Eggs Photo

There are several things that LAIKA got beyond right at the outset with this tale. As The Boxtrolls trailer illustrates, they centered it in a Dickensian/Victorian-type English setting and then they named the town Cheesebridge where it seems that the dairy product is code and currency.

They then made this a simultaneous Shakespearean fable about the quest for power and how it will eventually destroy you and also a story of how family is just a word and its meaning could be derived from anything that provides love, support and a feeling of unquestionable safety.

Isaac Hempstead Wright (Game of Thrones) voices Eggs and he becomes Eggs when he’s orphaned as a baby. The trolls who live under the Cheesebridge city streets take him in and raise him. They’re called Boxtrolls because they don boxes when they emerge late at night on the streets to take home the things that the citizens of this village toss away.

They are a happy, passive group that embodies the word community on so many levels.

A man named Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) desires to be among Cheesebridge's elite and concocts a plan to put the fear of God into the townsfolk about the evil trolls that live beneath the city. One of the city’s leaders agrees to give him a seat at the “cheese” table if he can annihilate every last troll.

Before long and with many trolls disappearing, Eggs emerges with the hopes of convincing the town of what the trolls really are -- and in the process, he meets an unlikely ally in the daughter of one of the city’s leaders, Winnie (Elle Fanning).

Directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi have painstakingly created a world that feels like a Tale of Two Cities -- above and below Cheesebridge. The LAIKA team has truly outdone themselves with the texture, color, lighting and artistry that encompass every frame of The Boxtrolls.

The Boxtrolls Cast

The film is based on the book Here Be Monsters! by Alan Snow, but it exists in that universe in framework only.

Screenwriters Irena Brignull and Adam Pava present a story that works largely when they are directly inspired by Snow’s book. There's an element of Snatcher’s story that doesn’t work for us that could have easily been worked through in another manner. Yet, The Boxtrolls is a family movie that works for every member of the clan, from five to ninety-five.

The Boxtrolls’ cast is beyond exceptional. Kingsley gives a performance that you will swear is not him. How he found the voice of Snatcher is beyond us, but we are quite thankful he did! Hempstead Wright captures the innocent child meets driven advocate for equality for all arc of his character with pure aplomb. And where to start with Fanning? My goodness, does she nail the Victorian accent while being as feisty as a firecracker.

Our The Boxtrolls review promises an utterly delightful time at the cinemas for anyone who takes in the latest world from LAIKA.

There are messages to treasure, and they’re all delivered without a mallet to the head as other family movies can do. And that is just one of the things that has LAIKA emerging as one of the animation houses that when we see their name, we will be front and center every time they produce something new.

They are just operating at a higher level of awesomeness than most. We cannot wait to see where they go next.

The Equalizer Review: Denzel Washington Lays Down the Law

$

Denzel Washington and the character of Robert McCall are a match made in heaven. The Equalizer is, in fact, who he becomes over the course of Antoine Fuqua’s tense, powerful and thrilling film. It is the audience’s utter joy and a gift to witness Washington take McCall on a journey of self discovery that is richly painted and electrifyingly executed.

The Equalizer Denzel Washington Action Photo

Fuqua’s film is truly an origins story and it only shares the name of our hero and his ability to “Equalize” a situation with the TV show from the '80s. That is really it, and thankfully so.

As we meet Washington, he is a widower working in a Boston Home Depot-type store. McCall does his job and heads home where he lives quietly, and alone. He can’t sleep and finds himself every night with one of the great literary classics ready to read as he heads to his favorite diner.

He meets a Russian teenage girl named Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz), who is clearly a young soul who was caught in the seedy world of sex slavery. McCall wants to help, but does what he can in verbal support.

As teased in The Equalizer trailer, when one of the mobsters puts Teri in the hospital, Washington swings into action on a mission of justice meets vengeance.

What’s so fantastic about The Equalizer is that Washington’s journey from average Joe to man who culls his obvious special ops training to help others, is evenly drawn out over the film. He doesn’t just go in guns a-blazing seeking retribution. Oh no, it simmers like a good sauce until situations occur that get that heat pumping well into the red as it explodes into a menagerie of man on a mission action excellence.

That catalyst, it must be pointed out, is through the performance of Moretz. We see a light in her eyes that McCall sees and when someone so thoughtlessly tries to squelch it, it is easy to see why a quiet man would revert back to being not so quiet in his ways.

Whereas in films such as Taken where Liam Neeson lets you know through that iconic line that he has a special set of skills, Washington and Fuqua show you without verbage. The director films his action sequences with the most expert of panache. It plays out two ways.

Denzel Washington Stars The Equalizer

We see what McCall sees and how each item in a room could be used as a weapon. And then there’s the other way. Fuqua cuts together the scene so that we don’t really know what happened until after it’s over. We can’t decide which is more thrilling. They both work, and they both leave the viewer with jaw dropped and pulse quickened.

That’s also another thing that is something truly special about Washington’s performance. As we feel our heart rate go faster simply watching him, McCall's clearly is growing calmer. And that says something for the actor who has given us so much over his Oscar-winning career. To give such a simultaneously nuanced and explosive performance in the span of one movie is truly a study in being a movie star at the highest levels.

The film could easily become a series for Fuqua and Washington. After the mastery they achieved with Training Day and now The Equalizer, we eagerly await the director and actor to meet again on a Boston landscape.

Our The Equalizer review can proudly state that the film is the first must-see action film of fall and if you appreciate the work of Washington, it is a complete and utter don’t-miss.

Bill & Ted 3: Alex Winter Reveals Timeline

The third Bill & Ted movie has been discussed for some time, including when Keanu Reeves first admitted that it was coming. It appears to be a serious reality with a script completed and ready to shoot.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Keanu Reeves Alex Winter

Alex Winter, the other half of our comedic, dim-witted yet good-natured with a heart of gold duo, talked to Yahoo Movies and gave us an update.

“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really (expletive) funny,” Winter said.

“But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”

We’re seriously intrigued and given so many actors' sudden willingness to revisit their past, a la Harrison Ford and Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII and even Reeves with Speed 3, if the story is right, we always say there’s nothing wrong with that.

Gone Girl: Four TV Trailers Reveal Thriller's Mysteries

For fans of Gillian Flynn’s epic mystery Gone Girl, the fact that the film arrives in merely seven days is just this side of heaven. Fox knows that as well as the studio behind the Ben Affleck-starring film has released not one, but four new TV trailers, and each provides a unique perspective on the mystery that has enthralled millions.

Affleck stars as a man whose wife (Rosamund Pike) disappears and as the days go by, public opinion, and some clues, seem to paint a picture of a not-so-perfect marriage that could lead some to think that Affleck had something to do with her being a Gone Girl. This teaser illustrates that point.

The film explores many other facets of the mystery as well, such as the type of men that Pike seemed to attract as her confidants (like Neil Patrick Harris’ character). Check out this trailer for that element!

What truly compels us about Gone Girl is the fact that a stellar book is brought to the screen in a screenplay penned by the author. Oh yeah, and it’s helmed by one of our favorite directors in David Fincher.

Watch Se7en online to get a feel for what you’re in for when Gone Girl premieres a week from today, October 3.

Annabelle Synopsis:

She terrified you in The Conjuring, but this is where it all began for Annabelle.

Capable of unspeakable evil, the actual doll exists locked up in an occult museum in Connecticut -- visited only by a priest who blesses her twice a month.

New Line Cinema’s supernatural thriller Annabelle begins before the evil was unleashed.

John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia -- a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia’s delight with Annabelle doesn’t last long.

On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle.

Annabelle Wallis (X-Men: First Class) and Ward Horton (The Wolf of Wall Street) star as the Forms. Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard (Cross Creek, Twelve Years a Slave) stars as Evelyn, a neighbor who owns a bookstore and is familiar with the occult. Rounding out the cast are Kerry O’Malley (TV’s Those Who Kill) and Brian Howe (Devil’s Knot) as neighbors Sharon and Pete Higgins; Tony Amendola (TV’s Once Upon A Time) as Father Perez; and Eric Ladin (TV’s Boardwalk Empire,) as Detective Clarkin.

Annabelle reunites the filmmakers behind 2013’s hugely successful supernatural thriller The Conjuring. James Wan, director of the global hit, is producing Annabelle with Peter Safran. John R. Leonetti, who served as cinematographer on The Conjuring, is directing.

Gary Dauberman wrote the script. Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter and Hans Ritter are the executive producers. Also joining Leonetti behind the scenes are director of photography James Kniest, production designer Bob Ziembicki, editor Tom Elkins, and costume designer Janet Ingram. Joseph Bishara composed the score.

New Line Cinema presents an Atomic Monster/Safran Company Production, Annabelle. Scheduled for release October 3, 2014, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Hector and the Search for Happiness Review: Simon Pegg Brilliantly Branches Out

$
0
0

Simon Pegg may have come to wide audience awareness with his comedic work with co-star Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End.

Simon Pegg Stars in Hector and the Search for Happiness

With his work in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek franchise and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the upcoming Mission Impossible 5, Pegg is seriously branching out. But, nothing can prepare you for the hurricane of talent that Pegg shows with his turn in Hector and the Search for Happiness.

As shown in the Hector and the Search for Happiness trailer, Pegg is Hector -- a psychiatrist who comes to a thunderous realization that he doesn’t know what it means to be happy. He feels like a fraud to his patients. Even though he has a fantastic girlfriend (Rosamund Pike), a successful practice and a wonderful home, Hector has no idea what it means to be happy.

So, he drops everything and flies around the world to discover other people’s definition of that elusive emotion.

From Shanghai to war-torn Africa and then to the beaches of Venice Beach, California, Hector gets a varied view of happiness from an eclectic group of souls and all the while, he’s keeping track of all of it in his own little book of notes, quotes and drawings that will come to define not only happiness, but also Hector himself.

Pegg is astounding and a complete and utter revelation. There are a lot of deep subjects explored here, but there is still plenty of room for his comic gifts and his magnanimous smile certainly gets its fair share of moments to shine.

Hector and the Search for Happiness Simon Pegg Rosamund Pike

What is also fascinating in Peter Chelsom’s film (he also co-wrote the screenplay with Maria von Heland) is that the lessons learned by Hector could also be applied to many who view this movie, regardless of where they are on the road of life. It is an insightful piece that keenly knows the human spirit. It is also forward thinking enough to touch on numerous cultures and how they define happiness (Tibetan monks, African war lords, international billionaires and even a Chinese prostitute -- to name a few), aiding in Hector’s search for the meaning of happiness.

As many people as there are, there could be that many meanings of the titular emotion, and that becomes painfully clear through the film. Chelsom has also managed to keep his pacing perfect as the ebb and flow of the story reflects the frailty of human emotion and how it can change on a dime due to circumstances, situations and even the minutest moments of time.

Our Hector and the Search for Happiness review finds the film simultaneously a spiritual and powerful cinematic story as well as a film that touches on all the feelings that make us human. Hector’s journey is a glorious adventure for the audience, and all the while you won’t realize that by the end credits, you too will be examining your life and in the most honest and true ways.

Simon Pegg is Hector
And Hector is not happy, so he journeys out into the world in Hector and the Search for Happiness.

Alien 3 is not the best Alien movie, but it is still a damn good David Fincher film. And it is a true treat to see the visionary director put his stamp on a film series that had given us the artistic vision of Ridley Scott with Alien and James Cameron with Aliens.

Weekend Movie Preview: September 26, 2014

The final Weekend Movie Preview for the month of September highlights four new films that are landing in the nation's movie houses.

Denzel Washington is back in action in The Equalizer, LAIKA returns with their third film -- The Boxtrolls -- and Jimi Hendrix gets the biopic treatment with Jimi: All Is By My Side. Oh, and we would be remiss to leave out the stunning journey that is Simon Pegg's announcement of dramatic talent in Hector and the Search for Happiness.

Let's break it down...

The Equalizer: Washington is astounding in this origins story that tells how a former black ops military man, who now toils at a Home Depot-type place, rises to the occasion of helping a young Russian girl break out of the mob-owned chains that bind her. The film is based on the '80s TV show, but really only uses the lead character's name and the title. Other than that, it is a completely different feel and message.

As we stated in our The Equalizer review, Washington and director Antoine Fuqua have done it again. The two made Oscar-winning greatness with Training Day and have done that kind of work again with this action flick.

The Boxtrolls: The people who gave us Coraline and ParaNorman have done it again with their latest stop-motion animation tale. The story of trolls that live beneath the city of Cheesebridge is told with such heart and humility that it is a true family film with everything that that means.

The Boxtrolls Official Movie Poster
The official movie poster for The Boxtrolls shows off its eccentric cast!

The voice cast is astounding, particularly an unrecognizable Ben Kingsley -- our The Boxtrolls review points out -- and Elle Fanning is also completely and utterly charming as the wise-cracking Winnie. When it comes to movies to see with the kids, you cannot lose with The Boxtrolls.

Jimi All Is By My Side: Hendrix is a rock icon, there is no doubt. But, what came before? That is the question posed with this biopic that follows Hendrix in his early days as an R&B band guitarist who is convinced by the girlfriend of Keith Richards to move to London to try to make it as a solo act.

Andre 3000 is Jimi Hendrix
This casting works for us, based solely on looks!

Our Jimi: All Is By My Side review points out that star Andre Benjamin is astounding as Hendrix, and Imogen Poots brilliant as the woman who inspires him. It's just that the film suffers from pacing issues, which is unfortunate for a film about a man that is so enigmatic.

Hector and the Search for Happiness: Pegg blows us away with a turn that is equally as dramatic and comedic. Pegg is Hector and he is a psychiatrist with a wildly successful practice, a lovely girlfriend (Rosamund Pike) and generally what should be a happy life. The one thing is though, he has no idea what makes people happy. That is a problem for a person charged with that duty!

Simon Pegg is Hector
And Hector is not happy, so he journeys out into the world in Hector and the Search for Happiness.

Hector heads out across on the world on a journey to determine what is happiness and along the way, our Hector and the Search for Happiness review reported, we find utter joy as well.

Feel like staying in this weekend? Several fantastic titles have arrived on digital download. Watch The Rover online and don't miss the comic gem that can be seen when you watch Neighbors online.

“We’re doing Magnificent Seven together,” Fuqua told us exclusively. “We start next year and Denzel starts riding horses next week!”
