When you have Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan as the leads and Tobey Maguire supporting with Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) directing, we get a little excited. The first photos from the film have arrived and we begin with DiCaprio and Mulligan getting comfortable.

It is hard to argue that for about two decades there, there was no bigger star in the world than Tom Cruise. Somewhere between jumping on Oprah’s couch and extolling the virtues of Scientology on the world, he may have lost a bit of his luster. But, Cruise is still one of the biggest of the A-list stars and has a body of work that would be the envy of any actor working today... or in yesteryear.

Tom Cruise at Mission Impossible 4 Premiere
Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt on December 16 in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Movie Fanatic thought it was a perfect time to ask our readers about their favorite Cruise moments on screen from the actor’s celebrated filmography.

The Dictator’s first trailer has premiered and gives us great insight into what to expect from Cohen’s latest comedy. Sure, he has charmed critics with his turn in Martin Scorsese’s latest (check out our review of Hugo) and we commend him for it, but comedies such as The Dictator is what we love most about Cohen and with his latest film’s trailer out, his brilliance is on full display. And thanks to Megan Fox for a delicious cameo… take that Kardashians!

Golden Globe Nominations: What Does it Mean?

$
0
0

The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning and there’s so much to discuss, where to start? First, we have to look at who got snubbed. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy had hoped for a nomination for Best Picture, and failed. Gary Oldman was considered a lock to get some nomination love and also didn’t secure one. Does this mean Tinker, Tailor’s Oscar chances are sunk? Perhaps, time will tell.

Ryan Gosling Stars in The Ides of March
The Muppets probably thought it had a good chance to secure a Best Movie, Comedy or Musical nod. But alas, it failed to happen. Also in the Comedy category, why wasn’t Bridesmaids stand-out Melissa McCarthy nominated? To us, that is the biggest snub of all.

And even though she was a long shot, the Golden Globes adore Angelina Jolie and she probably thought she stood a chance as a Best Director nominee for In the Land of Blood and Honey. Apparently, the Golden Globes disagreed. Also a surprise was the absence of Armie Hammer in the Supporting Actor category for J. Edgar. His co-star Leonardo DiCaprio got a nod for Best Actor. Who does the Golden Globes think he acts across… a wall? No, it was Hammer and he should be there as he met DiCaprio note for note.

But, enough of the “who didn’t get nominated.” Let’s focus on who did score a Golden Globe nod and what it means to the larger Oscar race.

Ryan Gosling had probably one of the best years of any actor out there. It was terrific to see him get two nominations, for The Ides of March and Crazy, Stupid, Love. Although Drive was the better movie over Ides, we’re just happy Gosling is there twice… he deserves it. Drive did score an acting nomination, for the astounding Albert Brooks.

After witnessing Rooney Mara in action the other night (check out our Girl with the Dragon Tattoo review), we could not be more thrilled that she was nominated for Best Actress from a Drama.

Also a joy was the love given to Moneyball. The film scored a Best Movie, Drama nomination as well as acting nods for Brad Pitt for Best Actor and Jonah Hill for Best Supporting Actor. (Don’t miss our exclusive video interview with Hill for Moneyball!).

All the Moneyball attention sure does one thing: Sets up the film to be considered heavily for Oscar gold. After Pitt scored the New York Film Critics’ award for Best Actor and Hill scored a SAG nomination for Supporting Actor, we would be surprised if Moneyball did not nail a Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting nomination come Oscar time.

Secret Meetings
The hottest race for Oscar this year is in the Best Actress category. Judging by how the Golden Globe nominations went, that picture may be a little clearer. With Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help), Meryl Streep (Iron Lady), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and the aforementioned Mara (Dragon Tattoo) nominated for Golden Globes, we stand by our Best Actress Oscar predictions! Note that Michelle Williams did receive a nomination for My Week with Marilyn. But, the Golden Globes thought of the film as a musical or comedy. If you say so.

Lastly, how does the Golden Globes set us up for Oscars overall? With The Artist and The Descendants leading the way, consider those two front-runners for leading the Oscar nomination pack. George Clooney continues to be the favorite for Best Actor for his work in The Descendants and Viola Davis still leads for Best Actress from The Help. What muddles things, only slightly, is all the affection the Golden Globes gave The Ides of March. That was a film that was lukewarmly received when it arrived on screens. It was nowhere in the Oscar prediction world. So, does that mean its Oscar chances have heated up? Movie Fanatic does not think so.

Noomi Rapace: From Dragon Tattoo to Sherlock Holmes' Gypsy

Noomi Rapace is enjoying her Hollywood moment. The star of the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is currently starring opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The actress is also currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and her excitement is palpable as she spoke with Movie Fanatic.

Noomi Rapace and Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
“I think I'm really spoiled now,” Rapace said with a laugh.

“This was the first American or English spoken movie I did. I am extremely happy with Sherlock. Then I went, amazingly enough, to prep Prometheus straight after. And I was in that movie for five, six months. So it was a really intense year. And now I'm here with you. I'm really grateful for all those people that they believed in me and gave me the chance and invited me on this journey."

In A Game of Shadows, Rapace plays Sim, a gypsy integral to Sherlock Holmes (Downey) and Dr. Watson (Law) stopping the evil Moriarty from starting a world war. After the action of Dragon Tattoo and now Sherlock Holmes, Rapace is extremely comfortable getting in on a good fight. “I like doing those more physical scenes. I always enjoy that and I try to do as much as they allow me to do of the stunt stuff and the more complicated things. I think that's always quite easy,” Rapace said.

“Of course, you're bruised and your body is aching and you hurt yourself a lot sometimes. But that's kind of a part of it. And I've done fight scenes and stuff like that before. I always find it quite amusing.”

Now culling her heartstrings for a powerful scene, as a new English speaker (she only learned the language three years ago), that is a different story. “The emotional scenes were quite complicated because you need to really get into that situation in your head. You’re filming in a room full of people with everybody watching! You feel like, in a way, you just want to hide and do it really private,” Rapace said.

So how did the actress find working with Downey and his wife Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows producer)? “I met Robert and Susan six weeks before we started to shoot. It was a good, quick meeting in LA. We didn't really talk about Sherlock Holmes, but we talked about movies and dreams. I remember Robert asking me, 'How do you want to work?' And, 'What movies do you want to make?' And it was really super intense.”

Rapace exited the meeting with the Downeys and could not have been more excited. “I called my manager and was like, 'Wow. Those two are amazing. I would love to work with them,’” she said. The Downeys felt the same way and then the phone rang. “Warner Brothers wanted to send me over to London to meet director Guy Ritchie. It was really also very intense. I came out of that meeting and felt the same way after meeting Robert and Susan. ‘I would love to work with those people.' I didn't expect anything.”

Perhaps there’s a lesson there in Rapace’s Hollywood journey? Expect little, work hard and embrace your good fortune. We, for one, cannot wait to see what this actress does next.
