Tim Burton has released two more photos from his upcoming Dark Shadows. The two stills are of the film’s big stars, Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer. Of course, we’re going to start with one of Movie Fanatic’s favorite performers, Depp, in his role as Barnabas Collins.

Johnny Depp Stars in Dark Shadows
The film, based on the 1960s cult TV show, finds Collins as a man who is trying to rejoin his family after being buried for over 200 years. Note behind Depp in the above image is Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley, who portrays caretaker Willie Loomis.

The next photo is of Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard whom the actress describes as “the reclusive matriarch of the Collins family. The character has not left the mansion since the disappearance of her husband a decade earlier.”

Although it has English subtitles and the trailer itself is for Japanese audiences, we bring you the Disney Japan trailer for Pixar’s Brave because of all the spectacular new footage it shows. This is the first film in Pixar history to feature a female lead, and what a protagonist they have in Merida (Kelly Macdonald). The Scottish princess would be happier exploring the Highland forests of her home than with what she is saddled to do: Find a husband. As only Pixar can, as we see in this latest trailer, they have taken one of the world’s most beautiful places and brought it impeccably to life.

Brave hits theaters in 3D and 2D June 22 and also features a stellar cast: Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane and Grey's Anatomy star Kevin McKidd.

The film stars Andy Samberg as the son, Leighton Meester, James Caan, Susan Sarandon, Milo Ventimiglia and Will Forte. Look for it in theaters June 15.

The Lorax achieved an enormous feat this past weekend by banking over $70 million in its first week of release. The film was immediately anointed the highest-grossing film to open in 2012. Dr. Seuss would be so proud, and honestly, its success should not be a surprise given the universal adoration for his work.

The Lorax Star Danny DeVito
As it is based on the prophetic prose of Seuss, there are of course some great lines that we will forever remember from the latest page-to-screen Seussian effort. We present the best of The Lorax quotes.

Well, Muppets fans, it’s official: Jason Segel will not be back in any capacity in The Muppets sequel. Movie Fanatic was attending the press gathering for Segel’s latest film, Jeff Who Lives at Home and the actor talked for a moment about his official stance on his participation in The Muppets 2. “My goal was to bring back the Muppets and I’d say we did that,” Segel said when asked about returning. “It was five years of my life. I want to pursue more human centered projects.”

Kermit, Jason Segel and Amy Adams in The Muppets
Movie Fanatic reported last week that the sequel to the 2011 film starring Segel and Amy Adams was a go, but the co-writer and star of the first film’s involvement was questionable. Now, we know for sure. It looks as if Segel saw that his part in the Muppets universe was to bring the gang into the 21st century and leave the franchise in the good hands of his writing partner Nick Stoller and the first film’s director who will be back for the second, James Bobin.

John Carter Exclusive: Dominic West Video Interview

Dominic West arrived on the set of John Carter ready to have some fun playing the foil to the title character’s hero (Taylor Kitsch). The film also allowed him to work with his dear friend, Mark Strong (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). Movie Fanatic is in Arizona, and walking onto the interview set for our exclusive video with West, and it’s easy to see how this landscape could feel a bit like Mars. Fitting, since the film’s most dramatic scenes occur on the Red Planet where West’s character Sab Than is waging an all-out takeover of the world.

We’re huge fans of West from his work on The Wire, but also the stellar theatrical and film resume he’s built. He’s currently seen on the BBC’s The Hour and he said fans most recognize him for his work on 300 and Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace.

Last year Warner Bros. celebrated Earth Day by releasing the Morgan Freeman-narrated IMAX documentary Born to be Wild. How do you top that? For Earth Day 2012, the studio and IMAX Filmed Entertainment enlisted the help of recent Oscar winner Meryl Streep to narrate To the Arctic. The film’s first trailer has arrived and it has us eager to take the journey to the frozen landscapes for the story of these creatures who are gentle giants when it comes to raising their cubs.

The crux of the To the Arctic story follows a single polar bear as she manages a brutal winter trying to raise her two seven-month-old cubs. If they aren’t the cutest animals on film since… well, Born to be Wild. Look for the film April 20.

The Muppets are celebrating their March 20 release on Blu-Ray and DVD by releasing a parody trailer of The Hunger Games. The film, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, is no stranger to having fun with their trailers. Past teasers have included The Pig with the Froggy Tattoo and a Hangover spoof. Now, with the Suzanne Collins blockbuster book series coming to theaters March 23, the folks at Disney felt it a good time to dust off their own lampoon of Hunger Games mania.

Pirates Band of Misfits Exclusive: Inside Peter Lord's Wizardry

Peter Lord co-founded Aardman in 1972 and has since seen his passion project change the world of animation. He’s a twice Oscar-nominated director for animated shorts and has enjoyed box office success with Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and last winter’s Arthur Christmas. Lord is visiting with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to talk about his latest effort, the visual marvel The Pirates! Band of Misfits (landing in theaters April 27).

The Pirates! A Band of Misfits Still
Lord seeks inspiration for his Aardman work everywhere, but rarely is it from the page. Yet, the genesis of his Pirates movie came from a popular British book that followed the story of a gang of pirates who are less than equipped to succeed at their jobs. He, for one, was surprised that his latest project became a page-to-screen effort. “I’d never seen it before in a book. I’ve looked at lots of books and ideas for films and never been moved by them in quite this way,” Lord said.

“Sometimes you look at an idea, and you think, ‘That’s a good set-up, that’s a good world to investigate. There has to be a good movie in there.’ That’s quite the common feeling. But the feeling of ‘wow’ is not common at all.”

By default, he felt that his stop motion animated pirates would immediately draw the humor he seeks as one aspect of his tales. “Who doesn’t love pirates? Pirates are almost comic characters by definition -- you can’t quite take them seriously because all the associations of pirates are cartoony,” Lord said.

“Instantly, your mind goes to the spectacle, to the colors, the costumes, the ship, all that stuff which I loved. And then, there’s an extraordinarily funny style in the books. We’ve used the same writer for the screenplay as wrote the books so we’ve kept his style. He’s a comic genius, that boy. He can write funny dialogue, funny ideas. He has a great instinct for absurdity and surrealism. Although he doesn’t write visual scenes particularly, his thinking is so bold and brave that he leads me into all kinds of places that I would never otherwise go. So, pirates plus a very funny book and I was hooked."

Casting for The Pirates! A Band of Misfits scored a coup with one of the biggest actors in the British Empire, Hugh Grant. “He brings a wealth of professionalism, a skill, a talent to take words off the page and bring them to life -- but you expect that. Hugh engaged in quite a different way,” Lord said. “For example, Hugh would rehearse at home on his own, which I don’t think people normally do. Because he really cares, he rehearsed at home. He’d say to me, ‘This sounded fine in front of the bedroom mirror, but I can’t get it today.’ I appreciated the commitment of that. And his instinct to hone a joke was very good. Because comedy is what he does best! He’s a very good comic actor with his voice and his face. He knows what joke works and what doesn’t. If it works, he’s the first to laugh. He laughs a lot when he’s recording. And if it doesn’t, he worries and worries. He improvises quite a bit. Quite a lot of his charming little asides were improv.”

When Lord founded Aardman decades ago, he was building on a passion that began in his youth. “As a schoolboy, then as now, it’s a way to make a whole world. That’s the attractive thing -- even if that world is only a foot square and in the background there’s Legos. You can make your own world and be a god and dictate everything that happens,” Lord recalled. “You take your Transformer, your G.I. Joe, you play with them, and you tell the story through these toys and you make your own world. You’re the god and you call the shots. That’s what kids love to do and that’s what I loved to do and in a way still love to do.”

Peter Lord on the The Pirates! Band of Misfits Set
If one had told him that he would be sitting across from Movie Fanatic at Sony Studios in Los Angeles years later discussing a big budget picture, he would have thought it preposterous. “I don’t think it was imaginable then, except as a fairy story. We forget that Disney ruled the animation world. I remember someone from Disney saying to me a long time ago, ‘We’re the only game in town.’ They were for the longest time,” Lord said. “I wouldn’t have dreamt that you could take puppets and make a film out of puppets. In the past, people have said to me in a kindly way, ‘It’s a lovely technique, but you’ll never make a feature film this way.’ Also, back then, I didn’t know anyone who was doing it. It seemed like a very tiny world. And now, we’ve got 300 talented professionals working with us.”

DVD Previews: Immortals, Footloose & Jack and Jill

$

0

It’s a gangbuster week on the home video front as five new titles arrive on DVD and Blu-Ray. There’s action, comedy, music and dance, romance and a bit of horror-suspense that is sure to please every Movie Fanatic.

Immortals: The spectacle that Tarsem Singh created should be seen on the big screen, but with the proliferation of hi-def TVs, not much is lost with Immortals arriving on Blu-Ray and DVD. The film is a visual marvel and its action sequences are so well choreographed, we might want to call it action as ballet. The Greek gods story resonated with theatrical audiences, making it a surprise hit late in 2011 and those that missed the spectacle should enjoy it immensely on home video.

Footloose: Why remake a classic? Well, thank goodness director Craig Brewer did as his Footloose is a fantastic piece of cinematic joy. The story is similar, but updated effectively for the 21st century. Kenny Wormald steps into Kevin Bacon’s dancing shoes in the story of a big city kid who moves to a small town where dancing and loud music are banned. We all know what happens, but in the remake it feels remarkably fresh as its soundtrack combines new tracks with the classics we know and love. Extras abound on the Blu-Ray combo pack including the delightful doc that takes us inside the decision to remake a 1980s classic, deleted scenes, the Fake ID music video by Big & Rich and commentary by Brewer.

Jack and Jill: Adam Sandler mostly missed with this story of twins (he plays both brother and sister). What is most shocking about Jack and Jill is the presence of Al Pacino, who plays himself utterly infatuated with Sandler’s Jill. We could not make this stuff up.

Like Crazy: Romantics will adore this charming film that stars Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and The Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence. The story follows a couple of lovebirds (Yelchin and Jones); he’s American and she’s British. The duo fall in love and have to deal with the distance that separates them when her visa runs out. Not too much in terms of extras on the home video, but this film stands alone by itself as a must-own.

The Skin I Live In: Creepy, scary, thrilling and all brilliant is our way of describing The Skin I Live In. Antonio Banderas stars as a world-renowned plastic surgeon who is up to something slightly sinister behind the walls of his palatial mansion. The latest film collaboration between director Pedro Almodovar and Banderas produces another home run.

The red band trailer for 21 Jump Street is here and boy, oh boy, it is not safe for work. But, it does clock in at just about five minutes and truly captures the feel and tone of the film based on the 1980s TV series. Yes, fans of the show that put Johnny Depp on the map, the original was not a comedy, but with Jonah Hill not only starring, but also producing, the laughs go off the charts. Hill stars with Channing Tatum as a couple of new police academy grads who are sent into a high school undercover to bring down a drug ring.

The film lands in theaters March 16 and is an absolute gem. We’ll have more on the flick as the release date gets closer, but for now, enjoy the red band trailer above.

The Town Blu-Ray

There is much to treasure with this new release! The additional features, beyond the new ending, include an all-new 30-minute documentary The Town: A Director’s Journey, Affleck commentary on the regular theatrical version, the extended cut as well as the extended cut with an alternative ending.

Top 10 Ewan McGregor Movies

$

Ewan McGregor was Christopher Plummer’s acting partner for his Oscar-winning turn in Beginners in 2011 and now the Scottish actor is back on screen opposite Emily Blunt in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. In honor of the charming film, we have gone over the esteemed actor’s career and selected our Top 10 Ewan McGregor Movies.

10. Haywire
McGregor jumped at the chance to work with esteemed director Steven Soderbergh (what are his top 10 movies?) on the helmer’s first action picture. The actor had to learn to fight the film’s star Gina Carano, a professional MMA fighter, and lived to tell the tale. The film also allowed him to portray a different sort of character, someone who is not as affable as we’re used to seeing from McGregor.

Ewan McGregor in Haywire

9. Big Fish
Another movie and another huge director for McGregor to add to his resume arrived with Big Fish. Tim Burton directed the story that many called a modern day Wizard of Oz. The film showcased McGregor’s talents as he worked in tandem with a British legend in Albert Finney as both played the same character.

8. Black Hawk Down
Another great director called and McGregor answered when Ridley Scott cast him in the true story of an American helicopter team trapped behind enemy lines in Somalia. Showing another side of his talent spectrum, the actor was every bit the U.S. Marine living under the cloud of the possibility of death arriving at any moment.

7. The Ghost Writer
In The Ghost Writer, McGregor played the yin to Pierce Brosnan’s yang in a chilling tale that is one of the most underrated of his career. Watching those two actors go at it scene after scene, is one of the great joys of this film. The fact that it is also a truly compelling story is a plus as well.

6. Brassed Off
A film packed with such warmth, joy and heart, Brassed Off follows the exploits of a UK brass orchestra and its efforts to become national champions. McGregor’s charm is on full display and a great film is made even better because of the actor’s presence.

5. Trainspotting
Trainspotting is the film that put McGregor on the map in 1996. The debaucherous story of Edinburgh drug addicts and their lives is as disturbing as it is deliciously real. The toilet scene is still one of the actor’s most memorable of his career.

Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting

4. I Love You Phillip Morris
On paper, a love story between Jim Carrey and McGregor’s character may seem like a reach. But the duo are impeccable as two souls who find love while locked away in the darkness of prison.

3. Emma
The quintessential Jane Austen cinematic version of Emma, this 1996 romance starred Gwyneth Paltrow as the title character and featured McGregor as Frank Churchill. With this work, McGregor proved that he can do it all, period pieces, action films, dramas and comedy.

2. Beginners
McGregor played the son to Plummer’s coming-out-of-the-closet-at-75 father. Beginners was one of the actor’s greatest performances and his volley with Plummer easily set up the legend to earn his first Oscar. The younger performer's character was expertly played by McGregor and had layers of nuance that only he could have brought out of an individual nursing a broken heart over the loss of his mother as well as dealing with the reality that is his newly announced gay father.

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge
1. Moulin Rouge
McGregor can sing! Who knew? Opposite Nicole Kidman, McGregor took the challenge of making a movie musical and hit it out of the park. His version of Elton John’s Your Song is still one of our favorite music moments from the movies. His performance is a perfect example of the excellence that is the actor proving that he is truly just getting started.

In this spot, we see Kravitz’s Cinna meet Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss as they ready the District 12 representative in the annual Hunger Games’ big debut.

Ridley Scott is getting behind the power of viral marketing with the website that is connected to his latest film Prometheus. Weylandindustries.com allows fans to register and get updates on the upcoming film that debuts June 8. As Movie Fanatic reported last week, Weyland Industries is the company started by Guy Pearce’s Peter Weyland in the film. For those fans of Scott’s Alien movie, you know that company became Weyland-Yutani Corpoation -- the business that sent Ripley into space. The image released by the website is certainly a puzzler. Let us know in the comment section below what you think it means. We think it's some sort of map.
