DVD Previews: Underworld and a Not-So-Happy Mother's Day

This week's home video releases include some laughs, some love, some lethality, and some Lycans. There's even a film themed for next weekend's Mother's Day, though I would read the description before ordering it for Mom.

Underworld: Awakening: The fourth film in the Underworld series, Awakening saw Kate Beckinsale return to the fold as Selene after sitting out the third film (the prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans). For fans of action, adventure, vampires, and werewolves, the Underworld series is a beloved addition to the genre. Underworld: Awakening is available in Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray 3D.

The Vow: This love story based on the actual lives of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, is not a Nicholas Sparks film, but it sure looks like one. It even stars Nicholas Sparks veterans Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. The Vow is a tender romance about a woman who, after a car accident, loses all memory of her husband, forcing the husband to re-win the love of his own wife.

Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie: Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! bring fans this hilarious comedy. In it, Tim and Eric squander a billion dollars meant to be used toward a movie, and must restore an old mall in order to earn the money back.

Mother's Day: Despite the title, you may not want to get your mom this DVD for Mother's Day this year. Unless, of course, your mom is a giant horror fan. The creator of Saw II through IV presents this terrifying tale of a group of brothers who, after robbing a bank, seek solace in their childhood home. Once there, they discover that the home is no longer owned by their mother, and take the new occupants hostage. That is, until their mother shows up, and takes over the situation.

Nicole Kidman to Star in The Family Fang as an Odd Artist Mom

Nicole Kidman has signed on to play the mother in a feature-film adaptation of Kevin Wilson's novel, The Family Fang.

Nicole Kidman Pic

No, the story is not about a woodsman who kills a wolf and passes its fang down through the family for centuries.

The book instead centers around the Fang family, with two performance-artist parents who use their children as inspiration for their odd pieces. The odd circumstances of their childhood causes some problems for Buster and Annie Fang in adulthood, and when they are forced to return home, they discover that there may be one last art piece in the works.

The Family Fang will be adapted by David Lindsay-Abaire, who wrote the screenplay for the 2010 film Rabbit Hole, also starring Kidman.

Kidman can be seen later this year alongside Zac Efron and John Cusack in The Paperboy.

Movie Fanatic Round Table: Talking Summer Movies

Now that The Avengers has premiered, summer is officially here and we’ve convened a few of our esteemed colleagues for a Movie Fanatic Round Table to talk about summer movies and what we are thrilled to see, who we think will surprise us this hotter season and which of the non-sequel films landing in the next four months we believe are fit to be called a franchise.

Gerrad Hall of www.thesevensees.com and Jami Philbrick of www.iamrogue.com join your Movie Fanatic managing editor Joel D. Amos for a discussion of all things summer movies.

Movie Fanatic Round Table Pic
1. What is your personal most anticipated movie of the summer and why? Yes... you have to pick one!

Jami: There are three movies that I was excited for this summer, The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises. Since I've already seen The Avengers, I'll take that off my list (I know that seems like cheating). I'm much more excited for The Amazing Spider-Man now, after seeing the second trailer and think that they might actually pull off a great reboot, while I have doubts that anyone besides fanboys will care. That leaves The Dark Knight Rises. It's hard not to have high expectations and I'm worried that they might get let down. Hopefully Nolan pulls it off and this is a Toy Story 3 and not a Spider-Man 3 quality third installment.

Gerrad: As much as the trailers for Snow White and the Huntsman, The Amazing Spider-Man and Ted have all piqued my interest for their own reasons, I have to say my excitement for The Dark Knight Rises is reaching a boiling point. It's the finale in the trilogy, Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan are saying sayonara, Anne Hathaway is in a catsuit, and Tom Hardy gets to sink his teeth into a nice, meaty role (hopefully we can understand what he says). Check, check and check. I'm there!

Joel: Prometheus, period. Ridley Scott heading back to the genre he helped define? Count me in! With each successive trailer, still, poster and viral video, my anticipation for the film grows ever deeper. Is it a prequel to Alien? Do I care? No! Regardless of the story’s origins, this is a sci-fi epic... and the first we’ve truly seen in years.

2. Which film arriving this summer do you think will surprise us? Like last year's Midnight in Paris becoming Woody's highest-grossing film.

Jami: As for what movie this summer will surprise us, I think fans will be shocked at how good G.I. Joe: Retaliation is... compared to the first one. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has already revived two dying franchises that he had not previously been in (Fast Five and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), and I have two words for you... Bruce Willis! But as far as a film on par with Midnight in Paris and its success, I can only think of two possibilities this summer, Savages and Magic Mike. Both helmed by Oscar-winning directors Oliver Stone and Steven Soderbergh, respectively. Both films have great casts and deal with controversial subjects, namely pot and male strippers.

Gerrad: Could Woody Allen out-do himself with this summer's To Rome with Love? Great cast: Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Allen himself. It's foreign, but not -- and Allen just doesn't stop. June 29 will be an interesting weekend to watch as well... will Channing Tatum's Magic Mike or G.I. Joe: Retaliation perform better? Two different audiences, two very different movies. Maybe the surprise will be if neither does huge bank.

Joel: I think that the big surprise will be how many people turn out to see Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis go at it in The Candidate. Ferrell (and Galifianakis for that matter) is no stranger to blockbusters… but let’s be honest: It’s been a while for the SNL veteran. The hilarity we’ve seen thus far in the CinemaCon sizzle reel and first clips has us falling on the floor in laughter.

3. Which non-sequel arriving this summer do you think has the chance to become a franchise?

Jami: This is a tough one as there really are not that many original films coming out this summer. I want to say Prometheus but that is a prequel. The Amazing Spider-Man ... but wait that is a reboot. Okay, how about Total Recall ... no wait that's a remake. The Bourne Legacy... no that is a sequel/reboot. Wow this is tough. I guess in that case, the original film that has the best chance of becoming a franchise is probably Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I'd say Snow White and the Huntsman could too but that's not exactly an original idea either.

Gerrad: Battleship -- no question about it on this one. If Transformers can do what it's done, I don't see any reason why a movie with a trailer like Battleship's won't land some mega money. I would be shocked if this movie sunk. (Sorry, had to get in that pun.)

Joel: I agree with Gerrad, Battleship has already done blockbuster numbers overseas and regardless of what it does domestically, count on this one getting a sequel. Recent Hollywood history is littered with films that rock overseas and barely make a dent here and then get a sequel (Wrath of the Titans, anyone?).

4. Is it naive to think that this summer will eclipse summer 2011 in quality and quantity of quality?

Jami: I think every summer movie season is about that same and it’s been that way for the last fifteen years or so. There are tons of sequels, comic book movies, remakes, reboots, kid's movies, action and adaptations. Last year was a pretty good summer season but so was the one before that, and the one before that. I think this year should be good, between the final Batman film, a brand new Spider-Man, the long awaited Avengers team-up, an Alien prequel (sort of), a Bourne reboot, a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie (Dark Shadows) and high octane sequels to G.I. Joe and The Expendables -- I think this summer is shaping up to be as good as any we've seen in recent years.

Gerrad: I think it's safe to say the quality of this summer's movies will surpass those of 2011. It feels like there were a lot of movies last summer that just met expectations. Then again, it was still a huge summer thanks to movies including Fast Five, Bridesmaids, The Hangover Part II and the Potter finale. But Summer 2012 I think should cash in at the box office... The Avengers is already tracking huge, Battleship is doing serious business overseas in its opening weekend, Will Smith is back with Men in Black 3, everybody and their brother wants to see Snow White and the Huntsman, not to mention The Amazing Spider-Man, The Dark Knight Rises and The Bourne Legacy. Ice Age: Continental Drift and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted should appease the younger audiences. Hope folks are saving their hard-earned money for all those movie tickets they'll want to buy.

Joel: This summer will see both quality and quantity in terms of successful films. What we’ve seen so far from G.I. Retaliation, The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus has us believing in summer 2012. But, with original ideas such as a fighting fairy tale heroine (Snow White and the Huntsman), a vampire-hunting president (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and other films such as Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love and of course Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, summer 2012 has the potential to be the biggest and best in history.

5. What was your personal summer movie favorite of all-time? You can have a three-or-four-way tie if you need!

Jami: When I think of the great summer movies seasons of the past I automatically go to two seasons from my youth... 1988, and 1989. The former brought us two of my favorite films of all time, Die Hard and Midnight Run. Both films greatly impacted movie making for decades to follow. 1989 brought us the first superhero event film of my lifetime, Tim Burton's Batman. While Nolan and Bale have pretty much nailed that genre, I will never forget the dark and gritty world Burton created and the first time I heard Michael Keaton say, “I'm Batman.” The one last summer film I will throw in is Terminator 2: Judgment Day. My father took me to see the film in the summer of 1991 when I was a teenager and I'll never forget the actual fear I felt sitting in the balcony of a small theater in Maine watching Robert Patrick's T-1000 on foot chase Arnold, Linda Hamilton and Eddie Furlong in their car and almost catch them. I'd never been so afraid in all my life.

Gerrad: I think the movie that stands out for me, the movie that epitomizes what a summer movie is all about -- big action, a main character you're rooting for and want to be, a bit of comedy lending some memorable one-liners -- is Independence Day. Will Smith became an enormous movie star thanks to that movie, and he has dominated several July 4th weekends since then. I can't ignore The Dark Knight and Speed either ... two very different movies, two summer movie classics.

Joel: The summer of 1993 brought us Jurassic Park and although Spielberg had astounded in previous summers (E.T., Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark), there was something about technology meeting talent that saw those dinosaurs of Jurassic Park totally terrify and cause thrills beyond belief. That summer also gave us The Firm, The Fugitive and In the Line of Fire.

Dark Shadows: Johnny Depp Dishes Getting Vampy

Johnny Depp found it quite easy to slither into the character of vampire Barnabas Collins. He, and Dark Shadows director Tim Burton (what is your favorite movie of theirs?), were big fans of the cult TV show from when they were kids. “I’ve known Barnabas since I was wee big,” Depp said.

Johnny Depp Stars as Barnabas Collins
The star, who some could argue is the biggest in the world right now, sat down and spoke to Movie Fanatic this past weekend about the making of Dark Shadows, what it is we as a society adore about vampires and shares a funny story about those wicked nails he had to wear as he embodied a two-centuries-old vampire.

Movie Fanatic: How much did it mean to you to have Tim Burton bring the original show's cast to the set?

Johnny Depp: It was great! It was great of Tim to bring them into the fold. It was our way of saluting them, and Jonathan (Frid, original Barnabas Collins) was terrific. He had written me a letter, a couple of years before, and signed a photograph to me, passing the baton of Barnabas, which I thought was very sweet.

Movie Fanatic: Those nails you sport as part of your costume had me feeling sorry for you...

Johnny Depp: There are many more reasons to feel sorry for me [laughs]. We can go through them now, or we can just cuddle after. In every film that I’ve been lucky enough to do with Tim, there’s always some form of torture. The nails were Tim’s idea. They were the length of the fingers. But, it was okay because I had a group of people who would help me go to the bathroom. They had to have treatment afterwards, but they’re okay now.

Movie Fanatic: You’re also a producer on Dark Shadows. What did you want to bring to the film in that role?

Johnny Depp: It’s impossible to consider myself a producer. I can barely produce an English muffin in the morning [laughs]. Our initial conversation about the thing was during Sweeney Todd. I just blurted out, in mid-conversation, “God, we should do a vampire movie together, where you have a vampire that looks like a vampire.” Dark Shadows was looming on the periphery, and then Tim and I started talking about it. When we got together, Tim and I started figuring out how it should be shaped.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think is the secret to being Barnabas Collins?

Johnny Depp: The idea of this very elegant, upper-echelon, well-schooled gentleman, who was cursed in the 18th century and is brought back to the most surreal era of our time -- the 1970s! How he would react to things and how radically different things were -- not just with regard to technology and automobiles -- but actual items of enjoyment for people, like pet rocks, fake flowers, plastic fruit, troll dolls, lava lamps and macramé owls. Those were my favorite, the macramé owls!

Movie Fanatic: Why as a society are we obsessed with vampires?

Johnny Depp: There’s this darkness, this mystery, this intrigue. And then, as you get older, you recognize the erotic nature of the vampire and the idea of the undead. What was most interesting, in terms of Barnabas, was the combination. It was a real challenge to make that vampire, who is clearly a vampire, fit back into this odd society and this dysfunctional family. Tim did it rather seamlessly.

Movie Fanatic: As a vampire, you do quite a bit of biting. Is that a little awkward?

Johnny Depp: I felt as though I was biting one of the Village People. When I had the fangs in, I wanted to be a little bit careful that I didn’t actually pierce the jugular [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: We spoke about meeting Jonathan Frid, how much of his performance did you embody and what else informed your characterization of Barnabas?

Johnny Depp: Even in the early days of trying to explore the possibilities of the character, no matter where you went in your head, if you tried to veer away from the original Jonathan Frid character, it was apparent to both Tim and myself that it had to be rooted in Jonathan Frid’s character of Barnabas. It just had to be. It was so classic. When Jonathan was playing Barnabas, there was a rigidity to him, like he had a pole up the back and this elegance that was always there. Tim and I talked early on that a vampire should look like a vampire. It was a rebellion against vampires that look like underwear models.

Vince Vaughn in Negotiation to Star in Canadian Comedy Remake: Starbuck

Starbuck is a hit French Canadian comedy from Ken Scott, released in 2011. And now it's 2012, so it's about due for an American remake.

Scott will write and direct the English-language remake, and Vince Vaughn, whose upcoming comedy The Watch premiers July 27, is in talks to star as a man with the alias "Starbuck" whose enthusiastic sperm donations have led to hundreds of unknown children who now seek his identity. Vaughn's classic fast-talking comedic style is showcased in The Watch red band trailer.

Vince Vaughn at Be Cool Premiere

Is it obnoxious to talk about remaking a film less than a year after it opened? Perhaps under different circumstances it would be. But considering this film's success, and the fact that American audiences aren't particularly receptive to foreign-language comedies, DreamWorks' decision to fast-track this production seems justified.

Besides, most films these days are remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, or some other new take on an old idea (even my pointing that out is an old idea--where does it end!?). Of our list of the Top 10 Summer movies, only two are entirely original premises. Vaughn is no stranger to remakes, either. Does anybody remember that he played Norman Bates in the 1998 version of Psycho?

The Avengers 2 is a Go: What Other Superheroes Should Join?

Why on Earth would Disney's Bob Iger announce after just one weekend that The Avengers is getting a sequel? Oh, because it made so much money they had to invent a new number for it? That's right, the 700-avengillion-dollar box office smash, The Avengers, will be franchised. And perhaps they newest superhero to join the team will be Captain Obvious.

The Avengers in Action

The announcement isn't without its share of speculation, though. With new Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America films in the works, there is a fourth "unknown" Marvel film being planned for 2014. That most likely means a new hero will be joining the Avengers cast.

And with Edgar Wright's recent Ant-Man tweet, Dr. Henry Pym might be a safe bet.

We want to know, now that we will have a new Avengers movie...

Which Marvel superheroes should join the gang?

Universal To Open Another Can Of Kick-Ass? Superhero Comedy May Get a Sequel

Universal is talking Kick-Ass 2 with Matthew Vaughn, who wrote, directed, and produced the first film.

Kick-Ass, based on the comic book of the same name, follows a teenager, played by Aaron Johnson, who turns himself into a real-life superhero named "Kick-Ass." And while Vaughn won't be able to direct the new film to do his commitment to the X-Men: First Class sequel, he wrote the script, and is completely willing to hand over the directing chair.

Kick-Ass and Hit Girl Ready for Action!

Vaughn's new script apparently uses the Kick-Ass 2 comic book series as inspiration, in addition to the as-yet-unreleased Hit-Girl spin-off. The young vigilante, played by Chloe Moretz in the film, will apparently get a lot of screen time in the sequel.

Original cast members Johnson, Moretz (who can be seen starting this weekend as part of the Dark Shadows cast), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are onboard, and the studio hopes to get filming underway by September of this year.

New Prometheus TV Spot Focuses on the Humanity

$

So far, the ads for Prometheus have been intensely ominous, creepy, and suspenseful. The new ad focuses largely on the interaction between the characters in the Prometheus cast, as opposed to their findings in outer space.

We get the sense that Ridley Scott's new extra-terrestrial sci-fi opus might feature a complicated web of deception and coercion. There may, as is uttered in the trailer, be an agenda someone's not telling us about.

But of course, without all the super-awesome alien stuff, Prometheus would just be an low-budget indie drama about a bunch of people just trying to get through the day (I'm picturing Jeff Daniels as "Prometheus," a well-meaning but socially awkward vending machine stocker...). Still, it's nice to see that a gigantic production that takes us on a vast journey through space can still have some genuine humanity to it. I guess that's why it topped our list of the Top 10 Movies of the Summer.

Prometheus opens June 8 and stars Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron. Theron can also be seen in this summer's Snow White and the Huntsman.

God Bless America Exclusive: Bobcat Goldthwait's Movie Madness

Bobcat Goldthwait has more than made his mark as a stand-up comedian. But, he is having a second coming career-wise as a talented comic film director. Evidence of that biting funny flair is on display with his latest, God Bless America. The writer-director of that film sits with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive chat about where this insanely hysterical idea came from and even gives us a wild story about filming one of his first films, One Crazy Summer with John Cusack. That film is where he met his God Bless America star Joel Murray and also where it seems he stole Cusack’s credit card!

God Bless America is a dark comedy about a man (Murray) who learns he is terminally ill. Tired of his life (even before his diagnosis), he goes on a killing spree cleaning up the world, “one jerk at a time” as the tagline says. When he first gets going, a teenager takes a liking to his method (Tara Lynne Barr) and the two make the most unusually compelling pair since Natural Born Killers.

The first The Amazing Spider-Man TV spot leaves something to be desired, and it tells us exactly what that something is: a 4-minute "super-preview" to air during the season premier of NBC's America's Got Talent on May 14.

The ad is pretty short, featuring a bit of web-swinging from Spidey, and a few lines of dialogue. But the real point is to tease the upcoming 4-minute preview.

The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3, and if this short TV Spot wasn't enough for you, check out the latest Amazing Spider-Man trailer.

The newest preview from the upcoming Ridley Scott sci-fi thriller Prometheus, arriving directly on the heels of this morning's Prometheus TV spot, discusses the origins of the idea behind the film.

Scott posits in this featurette that most scientists agree life on other planets is extremely likely. From there, Prometheus asks another question: What if that alien life actually planted the seeds for life on Earth? And heck, as long as we're waxing hypothetical, maybe men and women were created by different alien races--am I right ladies?

The latest offer from one of sci-fi's most celebrated directors hits theaters June 8, and includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, and Guy Pearce amongst its stars (check out the rest of the Prometheus cast here).

Guy Pearce stars in two other films this year, including the Nick Cave-penned western Lawless alongside Shia LaBeouf. Hey, why not make a day of watching Guy Pearce trailers? You can start with Prometheus, then head over to the Lawless trailer.

The new comedy from Sacha Baron Cohen follows a North African dictator named General Aladeen as he comes to America, loses his identity, and has to adjust to life in New York City.

Aladeen is a pompous, idiotic character with absolutely zero self-awareness, and the photo of him mugging in front of his own portrait is the perfect representation of this. These additional Dictator portraits show Aladeen in some interesting sports poses that bring to mind stories we've heard about the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il allegedly scoring 5 holes-in-one during his first ever golf game.

Brave Exclusive: Producer Katherine Sarafian's Come Full Circle

Brave producer Katherine Sarafian is especially attached to her latest Pixar film as it hits truly close to home. The movie features the studio’s first female heroine and for the producer, it has produced a kinship to her younger self. “It feels like a full circle thing from my childhood to my professional life to fulfill my fantasies of what a really powerful woman can be,” she said. Sarafian is visiting with Movie Fanatic on the Pixar grounds in Northern California after she showed us 30 minutes of the film that arrives June 22.

Kelly MacDonald Stars in Brave
Her enthusiasm for the project is palpable, from when we first met her at D23 to sitting in her Pixar office. “On a personal level, I was that girl,” she said of Brave’s Merida. The Scottish princess is expected to marry a suitor from a nearby Highland kingdom. She would rather live a life of adventure. “Everybody wants to be seen for who they are. You want to speak your truth. It’s hard, when you’re not quite understood and people have expectations for what you should be.”

Not only is the film impeccably set to resonate with audiences across the board, but mirrors the producer’s professional journey as well.

“It’s relatable for a lot of people, but I found it incredibly relatable given my own teen years… pretty much my whole life until I landed at Pixar. This is the first place where I feel I actually fit. I think Merida spends all the happiest times of her life where she really fits, which is out in the woods. Her hair flows. She’s riding her horse shooting targets and really being free. That doesn’t involve a big society of people. Her best friend is her horse. That’s life to her. It’s not the most popular choice for someone who has expectations for her. I found that really relatable.”

Talking about presenting the esteemed studio’s first female protagonist to life in Brave brings her to tears as she describes how deeply personal the film is to her and how she feels it has the power to inspire millions of little girls seeking to find their own way. “I’m sorry, I’m having a bit of an emotional response to the question,” she said and paused.

Katherine Sarafian on Brave Set
“It comes back to, for me personally, I was a film nerd and grew up always obsessed with these really fantastic female protagonists -- but they all had some magical ability. Whether it was Samantha on Bewitched, Wonder Woman or the Bionic Woman… I was obsessed. But they had some exceptional abilities that were not really human. What felt so amazing for me working on Brave, is now I finally get to shepherd and champion a story that has someone at the center of it who can make that kind of impact on the world. She’s heroic, brave and strong… without any superhero powers at all. She’s just skilled, smart, resilient and flawed, of course. She’s real -- of course she’s an animated character [laughs]. But, that’s a role model that kids can actually see and say, ‘I can do that. I can be that.’”

You Just Don't Get It, Do You? Funny New Video Exposes Film Cliche

Oh man, how many times a week does this happened to you: you're expressing a misguided opinion about a major event in your life, only to expose the fact that you've conceived of the event all wrong! And then, in order to help you along in your major epiphany that will completely change your mindset forever and finally allow you to tackle your life's problems head-on, your best friend/girlfriend/boyfriend/parent/child/side-kick/co-worker/cell-mate/army buddy spells it out for you: "You just don't get it, do you?"

What? That's never happened to you? That's never happened to anyone?

A new Youtube video from Bottoms Up Productions exposes just how common the phrase "You just don't get it, do you?" is in movie writing.

Do you get it? Now you'll be hyper-aware of this phrase any time it pops up in a movie. Let us know if you catch the cliche in any of the Top 10 movies of the summer. And if you can think of any other phrases you hear in films again and again, comment about it below.

A new film about the life of female Southern Gothic writer Carson McCullers, Lonely Hunter, will feature fellow Southern writer Tennessee Williams as a character. Who will play the iconic playwright? Prometheus cast member Logan Marshall.

Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green in Prometheus

The film, whose title is derived from McCullers' most famous novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, will star Jenna Malone as the young writer who faces immense adversity in becoming one of the most influential authors of her time.

As McCullers' best friend, the character of Tennessee Williams should receive significant screen time.

Casting announcements for biopics are always fun for fans of the figure being portrayed, and this announcement comes just a few days after news hit the internet that Andre 3000 will play Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming film, All By My Side.

Roman Polanski announced today that he will direct a new political thriller, D, based on the Dreyfus Affair.

Wanted: Director Roman Polanski

The Dreyfus Affair was an unbelievable civil-rights scandal from late 19th-century France, in which Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus was falsely accused and wrongly sentenced to life imprisonment for leaking French military secrets to Germany.

Polanski says that he was drawn to D because the affair, one of history's most famous examples of systemic oppression of a minority, is still politically relevant. The film will apparently play out as almost a spy thriller, with the story focusing on the political and intelligence aspects of the story.

Another political drama, based on the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, just released its first trailer. Watch the Argo trailer here.

Depp says that he had a good relationship with the horse, named Scout, and that after being dragged 25 yards, he could have been trampled, but instead escaped relatively unharmed.

The Lone Ranger, premiering in 2013, stars Depp as Tonto alongside Armie Hammer, who plays the eponymous hero.

'LOL' More Like 'FML': Latest Miley Cyrus Film a Box Office Disaster

$

Let's embark on a little thought experiment together: Imagine you spent $11 million dollars on a film. Got it? Okay, now picture the film testing so horribly that you don't even promote it. Alright, next think of that film being released the exact same day as one of the most highly-anticipated movie events of the century. Then, on top of all of that, go ahead and envision the film making as much nationwide as that epic movie event made per theater.

Still with me? Good, okay, now imagine that the film is literally named the sound of everyone laughing at you.

That's LOL.

Yes, LOL, the story of a girl named...LOL (yes really). Lol is played by Miley Cyrus, and critics are already speculating that the epic failure may ruin her acting career. The film made an abysmal $46,500 in its opening weekend (to compare, The Avengers made $46,100 per theater). If you converted that money into dollar bills and dropped them from a blimp into Yankee stadium during a game, not everyone would get a dollar bill.

Ultimately, Lionsgate, seeming to understand the fate of this film but unable to release it straight-to-DVD due to an odd clause involving international rights, buried LOL under the immense success of their other recent film about high schoolers, The Hunger Games. And with the triumphant success of that film (especially among the teen demographic), it's hard to feel bad about a little flop like this one.

Madea's Witness Protection opens June 29.
