Zach Braff, Bruce Campbell, Abigail Spencer, and Joey King (The Dark Knight Rises) also star.

Sam Raimi directs the film, which hits theaters March 8, 2013. Check out some awesome new Oz: The Great and Powerful stills to get another look at the scenery of Oz.

Top 10 James Bond Movies: Shaken and Stirred

$

Twenty-three films… think about that. That is the most in any franchise in movie history and James Bond has been doing it in style for fifty years. With 007’s latest, Skyfall, hitting theaters, it’s time to look back and choose the top films. Movie Fanatic’s 007 Days of Bond comes to a close after putting the series in context highlighted by our Top 10 Bond Girls and Top 10 Bond Themes. It is now time to announce the Top 10 James Bond movies!

10. Thunderball
Underwater sequences had never been captured on film as they were so thrillingly in Thunderball. The film starring Sean Connery is one of the more underappreciated movies in the first Bond’s run, and who could ever forget that jet pack that even drew sci-fi fans into the fandom? Movie Fanatic is not the only one who appreciates this classic, it is one of the series' highest grossing… capturing in inflation-adjusted dollars, one billion!

Sean Connery Thunderball

9. GoldenEye
Pierce Brosnan made his 007 debut several years after the Timothy Dalton era came to a close. Critics described Dalton’s time as lacking humor and perhaps to overcompensate, GoldenEye is dripping with self-effacing humor, but it works in spades with Brosnan dishing out the dialogue. Brosnan took to the action like a fish to water and looked impeccable in the requisite tuxedo. Director Martin Campbell knew what he was doing when he had the story center on a disgruntled ex “00” with 006’s Sean Bean. The Brosnan-Bean war took us from one action sequence to another in one of the franchise’s more thrilling movies.

8. The Spy Who Loved Me
The third film to star Roger Moore, although still based on an Ian Fleming book, kept almost nothing from the novel and as such, took a gamble that paid off with one heck of a thrill ride. The film was ahead of its time in 1977, coming out years before Mikhail Gorbachev's Glasnost. It found Bond teaming up with a Russian agent to protect the world from utter destruction at the hands of an international megalomaniac.

7. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
The only Australian to inhabit the lead role, George Lazenby was also the only actor to appear as the superspy only once in the series. It’s unfortunate as his film -- On Her Majesty’s Secret Service -- is one of the best. Unfortunately the film has on one hand one of the most compelling conclusions to a Bond film, but its closing James Bond quotes would also prove ironically false for Lazenby: “We have all the time in the world.”

6. Casino Royale
Daniel Craig took over the Bond role in Casino Royale and his magnificence is still being felt today. The film stands on its own as an incredible piece of work cinematically, but as a Bond film it excels by embracing the changing world politically while simultaneously giving audiences an origins story to a character they know all too well.

Casino Royale Daniel Craig

5. Dr. No
The first is still one of the best. Fifty years ago Connery took his Scottish swagger and gave the world a movie character that has become progressively more beloved. The way the classic Bond moments through its 23 movies are indelible speaks to the power they had when they were first introduced in 1962 with Dr. No. The Bond girl, the vicious villain, the theme song and our hero who has a certain license to kill… have stayed with us for five decades.

4. From Russia with Love
The second film in the Bond canon took what was introduced in Dr. No and showed the world that this is a storyline with a hero that we will be fascinated with for a long time to come. We meet Desmond Llewelyn’s Q and From Russia With Love instantly becomes possibly one of the smartest films of the entire run.

3. Live and Let Die
Live and Let Die is a personal favorite of Movie Fanatic and it showed how the James Bond character can be as suave as they come, but still be a fish out of water. By sending 007 into the swamps of Louisiana and giving him a tarot card reading love interest, this 1973 film showed how elastic the series could be. And that only further fueled the producing Broccoli family ammunition to have the creative wherewithal to send their hero anywhere… even into space!

2. Goldfinger
Goldfinger has so many things going for it -- it’s hard to know where to start. There are a multitude of iconic scenes throughout the film from Bond discovering the girl covered in gold to his coming within an inch of his life on Goldfinger’s table… this film is the one that sent the Bond character from film favorite to cultural icon.

Daniel Craig Judi Dench Skyfall
1. Skyfall
The latest Bond movie is the greatest. As stated in our Skyfall review, from thrilling beginning to its practically franchise rebooting finish… director Sam Mendes has crafted a stellar piece of filmmaking, regardless of its genre. A campaign has started that is compelling the Academy to consider the film for Best Picture. It is not only one of the best movies of the year, Skyfall is Bond’s best… period.

Skyfall: Visiting Bond Girls Naomie Harris & Berenice Marlohe

In 007’s latest adventure, the Skyfall Bond girls are an enormous part of the story as the stars take 50 years of the classic Bond archetype and bring it new life. The two visited with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview and talk about the brilliance of both Daniel Craig and his Skyfall villain Javier Bardem, as well as what it means to each of them to join the esteemed group of women who have scored the title “Bond girl." They're also quick, and rightfully so, to point out the importance of how that character has changed over the decades.

“For me, it is more than belonging to the Bond girl group, it’s being part of a James Bond movie that includes Bond girls, villains and James Bond... that is so mythical and magical,” Marlohe said. “They have a quality that makes you dream.”

It is a career moment, according to Harris, but it also speaks to women’s expanding role in the world. “It’s an incredible honor to be part of that roll call of amazing women. I’m really excited for how the role has evolved and how we now have women who are much more equal to Bond,” she said. “That’s really important.”

Lincoln Review: The Emancipator Epic

$

0

The first thing audiences need to know about the latest Steven Spielberg film is that Lincoln is more legislative drama than Great Emancipator biopic. Yet, through the performance of Daniel Day Lewis as the 16th president, by the closing credits the audience has a keen understanding of who this man was beyond the monument and the history books.

Lincoln Star Daniel Day Lewis
Lincoln is based on the astounding book A Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. But Emmy winner Tony Kushner (Angels in America) has written a script that only takes a slice of time from Goodwin’s Lincoln account to focus on the passage of the 13th Amendment.

With the Civil War raging and Lincoln recently reelected to a second term, the president decides to use his election-earned political capital. Lincoln wants to push his Republican party to launch an effort to ban slavery permanently in the House of Representatives where amendments are first approved.

The film follows what would prove to be the final months of Lincoln's life. But, beyond the expertly crafted political maneuvering, Spielberg and Kushner also remove the veil of history to illustrate the iconic man’s life as a husband and father. Extremely close with his youngest son Tad (an adorable and chaos-causing Gulliver McGrath), Lincoln also had a strained relationship with his adult son Robert (a too little seen Joseph Gordon Levitt).

And then there’s his marriage to Mary (Sally Field) -- often written about, but rarely captured as eloquently as Spielberg has in his film. One immediately gets the sense that the president’s most trusted ally and adviser was his wife. Yes, she was strained with loss as the couple had lost two children before our film even starts and that fact is emotionally illustrated by Field astoundingly in every scene she inhabits. Field’s verbal rant towards Thaddeus Stevens (a mesmerizing Tommy Lee Jones) during one stand-out moment in the film is the stuff that warrants Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

And Jones… well, don't get us started! Honestly, the entire extended cast excels as each player knows their part. Jones has never been so subtly explosive and manipulative. Oscar nominee John Hawkes joins James Spader as a group of political “agents” (who we would later call lobbyists) who work to help get Lincoln the votes he needs to pass the amendment. Besides the jaw-dropping work of Day Lewis, Spader steals the movie. It is an uncanny performance for the ages.

Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln
But the star of the film is Day Lewis and he has never been so astute in a performance that is powerful, present and persuasive. You see, through the film in some eloquent monologues, the actor presents Lincoln’s reasoning behind the immediacy of passing the amendment. The nation went to war over slavery, but if the war is resolved with the North winning, the South could go on allowing the practice to continue. While members of his party are calling for peace and the South’s surrender, Lincoln must continue to fight the war while simultaneously appearing to be conducting discussions about ending it and getting the slavery abolishment amendment through Congress. It’s a razor thin line the president walks and it is at the heart of the mastery of the Lincoln story.

Some may have hoped for more of a biopic of the legendary leader. But with Spielberg’s Lincoln, the months witnessed of this legendary life are more than enough to give the audience insight into a president the likes of which we will never see again. It is through those moments of passing the amendment, winning the war and then fighting for peace that the greatness of Abraham Lincoln was at its height. And that… is Lincoln.

Star Wars Episode 7 Director: 10 to Consider

$
0
0

Since George Lucas announced that he was selling Lucasfilm to Disney and that there would be a Star Wars Episode 7, Hollywood has been aflutter as to who should direct the next three films in the iconic series. Movie Fanatic managing editor Joel D. Amos and senior staff writer Micah J. Gordon present our top 5 picks each for who we think should next possess The Force.

Lucaslfilm Disney LogoJoel’s Picks:

Steven Spielberg: For a decade, it was thought in Star Wars circles that if anyone could pick up the baton from George Lucas, it had to be his good friend, Steven Spielberg. Lucas can trust the man and they share similar sensibilities. Plus, with the legend’s background in sci-fi, suspense and the work he’s done for decades with cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, imagine the palette they could create with the Star Wars world? Spielberg did say he was not interested, but then again…

Duncan Jones: The son of David Bowie’s work on Moon was nothing short of spectacular. Duncan Jones has the sci-fi mettle, passion for the series and the eye to give fans of Star Wars something truly unforgettable. That universe is so rich with emotional potential that can truly pull an audience beyond sci-fi to the heart of what is sensational cinema.

Brad Bird: What Brad Bird did, jumping from animation to Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, proves that he’s ready to take another giant step. And what better post-biggest blockbuster of Tom Cruise’s career for the director than to step into Lucas’ world and bring that nail-biting suspense meets sweeping story he’s been doing for years?

David Yates: The man best known for his work on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2possesses a unique eye. It would certainly be great to have a director that is classically trained and has brought stellar performances out of young actors for years. Imagine what he could do with a slightly older cast, hungry for pushing the Star Wars envelope? Plus, given his adeptness at the fantasy world of magic… could The Force not fit in nicely to his world?

Neill Blomkamp:District 9… that’s all you have to say. That and what we’ve seen from Elysium… Neill Blomkamp could do things with the last Star Wars trilogy that could seriously blow minds. All of the directors on Movie Fanatic’s list share one thing and Blomkamp embodies it completely: An eye for the mind-blowingly awesome meets emotional connection to character, something that has been sorely missed in the Star Wars world of late.

Guillermo del Toro Pic

Micah’s picks:

Guillermo Del Toro: Disney buying Lucasfilm presents a unique opportunity for the next Star Wars director to really define the style and tone of the new series. Del Toro could be the absolute perfect guy to shake things up a bit. There are plenty of competent directors who could "do Star Wars," but Del Toro could fix everything that was wrong with the melodramatic overly-polished awkwardness of the prequel series, by injecting some childlike wonderment and fantastical playfulness back into the mix. Del Toro was supposed to direct The Hobbit, but left because of timing issues. Perhaps this could be his next Hobbit.

Rian Johnson: The director of the endlessly entertaining, if slightly Wes Anderson-y, con film The Brothers Bloom proved he could do action with this year's Looper. Johnson may be one of those directors who would just "do Star Wars," though he is a performance director with a knack for magical realism who could serve to correct the acting issues from the last series.

Nicolas Winding Refn: Coming off the massive success of Drive, Refn has been connected to a remake ofLogan's Run (though that may not happen now that Ryan Gosling has dropped out). Refn is fairly untested in the American market, but a young and exciting director such as him might be perfect to take over for such an old hand. He has proven he can get mind-blowing performances from his actors (see: Bronson--seriously, see it), and he could give the series a kitschy 80's tinge that it sort of cries out for.

Jon Favreau: Favreau handled the first two Iron Man films marvelously. He's not the most exciting choice in the world, but he's a great director with plenty of action experience, a relationship with Disney, and a proven track record in handling beloved franchises.

Ang Lee: Perhaps the least groundbreaking choice, Ang Lee would definitely be able to nail all the fantasy, sci-fi, epic, and action elements of the Star Wars franchise. He reinvigorated the "Wuxia" genre of Chinese filmmaking with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, won Best Director for the romantic drama Brokeback Mountain, and his latest film Life of Pi --a fantasy epic -- already has people buzzing. The one knock on his record is his absolutely dreadful Hulk movie. Does that suggest Lee can't handle franchises? Probably not, and regardless, Star Wars seems right up his alley.

The clip stars James Spader, John Hawkes (American Gangster), and Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Republican operatives tasked with lobbying for the passing of the 13th Amendment.

Daniel Day-Lewis stars in the biopic as the 16th president, with Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper) as their son Robert. Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, and David Oyelowo also star.

Lincoln is directed by Steven Spielberg. It hits theaters in limited release today, and opens wide November 16.

Skyfall: Sam Mendes on Bringing Bond Back

Sam Mendes has achieved his share of dreams, what with that Best Directing Oscar for American Beauty. But it is his work directing Skyfall that may be his personal moment to remember as a lifelong fan of the James Bond series. When he got the gig, Mendes told Movie Fanatic in our exclusive video interview, emotions flowed.

“I was nervous and excited. I was a little bit scared because I thought this could go either way. I knew people would say, ‘Why him?’ But that’s why I did it. I needed a challenge,” Mendes said.

As an expert in all things Bond, Mendes also gave us his thoughts on why this spy has remained so relevant -- as so eloquently shown in Skyfall -- for fifty years despite the drastically changing socio-political world.

“There’s something astonishing about what’s happened to him. Michael Wilson, the producer, said something very important, the phrase 'if it ain’t broke don’t fix it…' I think what you have is fresher than ever -- amazing after 50 years.”

We have an update on Star Wars Episode VII.

Don't worry, it's still going down in 2015.

But StarWars.com has confirmed that Michael Arndt will pen the screenplay for this wildly anticipated blockbuster. The veteran writer won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Toy Story 3 a few years later.

He's also behind Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The ridiculously anticipated Star Wars Episode VII - which was made a reality two weeks after after George Lucas sold his studio to Disney - will hit theaters in 2015.

We already know that Harrison Ford is open to playing Han Solo again and that Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher had lunch with George Lucas in August to talk about Episodes VII, VIII, and IX.

But we're asking readers: who should be theStar Wars Episode VII director?

Breaking Dawn Part 2: Michael Sheen on His Twilight Journey

$

0

If Breaking Dawn Part 2 star Michael Sheen could go back in and give himself some advice before heading into the phenomenon that is the Twilight world, what would it be?

Michael Sheen Breaking Dawn Part 2
“I probably would have gone into therapy, just to prepare myself for what it’s like to be on set with some of the most attractive young people in the world today. There is nothing like being around Rob [Pattinson], Kristen Stewart, Ashley [Greene] and Nikki [Reed] to make you feel like an old, fat Welshman,” Sheen said and laughed.

He admitted that the getup he has for his evil Volturi leader Aro doesn’t help things either. “When you look at the white make-up -- you’re supposed to look pasty -- but it’s really not an attractive look for the slightly older generation. But, the younger ones look fantastic! They look pale and interesting, with their cheekbones. I have to wade through about 10 inches of subcutaneous fat, before I find the cheekbones!”

Sheen admitted that he appreciates joining that exclusive club of movie vampires (who’s your favorite movie vampire?). “With vampires, there is such a great tradition that you suddenly find yourself a part of. Each generation reinvents what that means to them. Fortunately, I didn’t have to do a huge amount of research on vampires because I really love those films. I recently had the chance to meet Willem Dafoe, who did the film Shadow of the Vampire. And I love Gary Oldman in Coppola’s Dracula.”

What Movie Fanatic adores so much about Sheen’s portrayal of the evil Aro -- especially in Breaking Dawn Part 2 -- is how his characterization utilized a killer sense of humor. “Stephenie [Meyer] hints in the book that he thinks of himself as being this sentimental old fool,” Sheen admitted.

“He’s been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. I would imagine the biggest problem is that you just get bored. I like the idea of someone who is constantly trying to amuse themselves. That brings more to it. Especially in this film, it allowed the moments where it really is horrible to be more chilling. I really creep myself out in this one.”

Because Sheen has not been in a position of celebrity that the series has forced on Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner -- where they cannot walk down the street without a screaming mob around them -- the actor has a unique perspective on the fandemonium. “Because I’ve got long black hair and white skin in the movies, people tend not to know that it’s me, until some parent goes, ‘That guy over there is in Twilight.’ Then, they go, ‘Aaah!’” Sheen admitted.

Sheen does admit he does have one memory of a tenacious Twilight fan. “My strangest encounter with a Twilight fan was in a changing room in a store, here in L.A. I was buying a new pair of jeans, and I came out of the changing room, just to look in the mirror, and there were two 13-year-old girls. I don’t know how they knew, but they found out that I played Aro and they just screamed at me. I thought, ‘I’ll take these jeans!’”

Through his daughter’s fascination with the Stephenie Meyer universe, he has a firsthand account of why audiences go batty for Twilight. “I feel like she’s really grown up with these books, as I’m sure a lot of young girls have. Now I sense the coming to the end of some kind of journey for the audience -- especially for a lot of the young girls who have grown up with Bella.”

We wondered how his daughter initially reacted to the news that he was joining the cast of her favorite movie and book series. “I thought she was going to be really excited when I said that I was going to be Aro, but in fact, she was really annoyed. It was her thing,” Sheen said and chuckled. “I slightly underestimated the effect on her. But, she eventually got very excited.”

Breaking Dawn Part 2 Michael Sheen
He thinks that fans will cherish how filmmakers have closed out the series on Breaking Dawn Part 2. “Bella’s journey allows other people to live vicariously through it with her, while they are also actually going through that journey, feeling things for the first time. I think the journey of Bella and Edward is like a little light, guiding them along that path,” Sheen said.

“I’ve seen the film twice now and each time I get to the end, I’m bawling. Goodness knows what a 14-year-old girl is going to be thinking. I find it a very moving end of the story.”

When it comes to the two roles he’s most famous for playing, Tony Blair and Aro, Sheen has a unique take on the parts. “One is a slightly self-delusional psychopath, and the other one is Aro,” he said and laughed.

“Funnily enough, there was one moment when I realized Aro is trying to convince all the other vampires about what they should do about this child, and he’s trying to persuade them while he’s being so disingenuous and laying it on quite thick. I noticed that I instinctively started using some of Blair’s hand gestures! They were both in positions of power. But, I think Aro has an insanity, the depth of which goes way beyond Tony Blair.”

Skyfall for Best Picture: For Your Consideration

The Academy needs to get over itself and its prejudices against genre films and exhibit “A” arrived this past Friday in the form of James Bond’s latest adventure, Skyfall. Audiences must agree... Skyfall scored at the box office.

Skyfall Set Photo: Daniel Craig
First, Skyfall is exactly the type of movie Oscar had in mind when it expanded the potential list of Best Picture nominees to ten. It’s a film that is both a critical and box office darling, with many critics not only saying it’s one of the best of the series, but one of the finest films this year. Movie Fanatic, in our Skyfall review, called on the Academy to nominate the latest Bond film and here are four more reasons why.

Second, the latest story of the Ian Fleming-born hero is an epic in every sense of the word. Oscar loves epics… so why not Skyfall? The film is put together with impeccable timing that gives its exotic locales plenty of breathing room to play their role as the ever tense plot boils towards its conclusion.

Third, Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes knows a thing or two about what it takes to craft a film that is worthy of the golden trophy. He utilizes that power with each frame of film as his contribution to the Bond canon is, in our opinion, the best Bond yet. His Oscar pedigree brings a legitimacy to our call for a Best Picture nod for Skyfall due to the helmer’s deliberate pacing, deftly crafted action sequences and how he produced the best performances of their careers from his cast including Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem -- all, by the way, also worthy of Oscar consideration for their performances.

Fourth, Oscar has a habit of being swept up in a film’s awards campaign that will undoubtedly lead to a coronation with a Best Picture. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Slumdog Millionaire, but I felt a bit of a hangover in Hollywood about awarding the highest honor to that film in the years since. Skyfall is not one of those films. It will age tremendously well and more importantly, show that the Academy has a sense of joy that is shared by the audience it is supposedly coveting to tune in to its annual fest.

Fifth, sure the Oscar for Best Picture went to a Lord of the Rings film. But, the win for Return of the King was more of a salute to Peter Jackson and his entire series than it was a victory for that final film in the trilogy. The Academy has failed to nominate a fantasy, action or franchise film since… not even The Dark Knight. By nominating Skyfall, the Academy can show that it is changing its tune and that it doesn’t have to only nominate British period pieces, but can appreciate a current British work that is reflective of the world we live in, and the audience who treasures the art form of film.
