Deliver Us From Evil Featurette: Meet the Real Ralph Sarchie

$

The story of Ralph Sarchie comes to life in Deliver Us From Evil, out July 2. It stars Eric Bana as Sarchie, a man who was an NYPD cop for 18 years. He saw things that are otherworldly and supernatural.

In the film, Bana talks about battling secondary evil versus primary evil.

Screen Gems has released a featurette that introduces us to the real Ralph Sarchie, and one of the first things he does is explain the difference between secondary evil and primary evil. “The primary evil isn’t trying to steal your property,” Sarchie said. “It’s trying to steal your very essence, your soul.”

Sarchie was a cop in the 46th precinct in the Bronx, one of the toughest neighborhoods in all of New York and, for that matter, America.

He retired and now works solely as a demonologist with several priests. In the movie, they boiled those religious officials into one, played by Edgar Ramirez. Bana and Ramirez must get to the bottom of a series of unexplained crimes that are gripping the city.

Stay with Movie Fanatic as we delve deeper into this incredible true story with exclusive video interviews with the entire cast, as well as one incredibly informative interview with Sarchie himself.

Check out the Deliver Us From Evil trailer and prepare to meet evil head on.

The Fault in Our Stars Crosses $100 Million Mark: Most Profitable Film of 2014?

$

0

The Fault in Our Stars has just crossed the coveted $100 million mark domestically and it has us thinking: This might just be one of the most profitable films of the year. Upon closer inspection, why yes, yes it is!

The Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort romance cost a mere $12 million to make and its opening north of the $45 million mark caught many by surprise. But, if you look at the marketing, right from that first The Fault in Our Stars trailer, it was spot on.

And keep in mind, young adult audiences do not always turn out for movies based on beloved books, but this John Green penned book was different. It had heart and was devoid of any kind of supernatural element.

It was about two people falling in love in the most difficult of circumstances and audiences, whether on page or on screen, pulled for them.

Now, The Fault in Our Stars is not done. So far internationally, the film has made almost $65 million. That’s $165 million globally! That’s a whole lot of money for a film that only cost $12 million to make.

We knew from early pre-sales when it seemed like The Fault in Our Stars was breaking records that it would do well. But, this is an entirely different animal altogether.

Well done, indeed.

Mockingjay Part 1 has released a video right from the Capital! President Snow is addressing the nation and, my goodness, who is that by his side? That is none other than the Hunger Games co-champion Peeta!

As you know when you watch Catching Fire online, the revolution has kind of started when Katniss all but destroyed the all-star Hunger Games with an arrow to the roof.

When Mockingjay Part 1 arrives November 21, you can count on the revolt to continue, and you can also count on President Snow (as seen in the above clip) to increase the metal in his iron fist.

He will be met with opposing force by the addition of Julianne Moore as President Coin. It should all add up to one explosive first chapter in The Hunger Games finale.

Why not head back to the beginning and watch The Hunger Games online.

WarGames Remake Moves Forward: Shall We Play a Game?

MGM has long been trying to remake WarGames, its '80s classic starring Matthew Broderick as a computer hacker who takes us to the verge of World War III. Although this is a movie that feels like a moment in time, we could see how there could be a new one, circa 21st century.

WarGames Movie Poster

MGM is talking with Dean Israelite to helm the project and Grace of Monaco writer Arash Amel to pen the screenplay.

The first film was helmed by John Badham and featured Broderick as a young hacker in the early days of computers. Why the film worked so well in 1983 is that computers and technology like it were so new, and to see a teenager working his magic with these computer things was pure joy.

With the proliferation of computers and hackers today, there is something there -- although this may be a case where we feel that a studio should leave well enough alone.

Watch WarGames online and see what we mean.

And let us know in the poll below, should WarGames be remade? What if we told you that The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort was being sought for the Broderick role?

The nut-rolls who gave us those insane Dumb and Dumber quotes are back, and Universal has released a new international trailer that may start like the first domestic Dumb and Dumber To trailer, but gives us fresh footage throughout the last half.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back, and as you see in the beginning of the teaser, 20 years have passed and Carrey appears to still be longing for Ms. Samsonite. Or… is it a gag?!

Bobby and Peter Farrelly bring the boys back on November 14 and add Kathleen Turner and Rob Riggle to the mix as Harry and Lloyd hit the road again to find the daughter that Harry never knew he had.

Mad Max Fury Road: First Look at Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron

Mad Max Fury Road is (rightfully) the cover shot for the newly released Apocalypse issue (what are our favorite apocalyptic movies?) for Entertainment Weekly.

Since Mel Gibson first shocked us all those decades ago with his Australian outback version of life post-apocalypse, Mad Max has personified survival in a time period where that is all but impossible.

This is our first time we’ve seen Tom Hardy as Mad Max with his co-star Charlize Theron. Note: Theron’s only got one arm… we’re intrigued!

Mad Max: Fury Road lands May 15, 2015 as part of our best summer ever and also stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Nathan Jones.

The director of the film, George Miller -- who has helmed every Mad Max movie -- tells EW that "I wanted to tell a linear story -- a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes. In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed."

Mad Max: Fury Road will premiere in 2D and 3D.

Although 2015 may be appearing to be the best year of movies we've seen in decades on paper, 2014 is already off to a fantastic start.

As we are here at the halfway point, we are ready to name our Top 13 movies of 2014 so far and there are plenty of surprises on our list!

Usually the first third of a calendar year is where studios dump their movies that they do not know what to do with. Yet, in February, we got one of the best of the year in only the second month. Watch The LEGO Movie online and it becomes clear that this is one fantastic flick.

The same filmmakers who gave us that gem -- Phil Lord and Chris Miller -- make another appearance on our Top 13 of 2014 with the film that gave us those memorable 22 Jump Street quotes!

And we have another that you can see right now that arrived back in January that still is stuck in our bones because it is so powerful. Watch Lone Survivor online and prepare to be inspired by the astounding true story of four Navy SEALs caught behind enemy lines in Afghanistan and their effort to stay alive.

The Giver Poster: Search For Truth, Find Freedom

The official poster for the highly anticipated page to screen effort The Giver is here. And judging by that amazing The Giver trailer, fans of the book are in for the rare treat when a Hollywood film gets it right!

The poster features its youngest stars front and center -- Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush -- with its superstars lingering in the background, Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges.

The Giver lands August 15 and if it's half as good as another YA novel that recently hit the screen, The Fault in Our Stars, it should make a whole lot of box office dough too!

The story follows Thwaites' character, who discovers (thanks to Bridges) that all the emotionless living that exists in society is due to the morning injection that everyone gets. When he stops doing it, he notices colors and life in a whole new light. And that is dangerous to leaders such as Streep's character.

Is a revolution brewing?

Winter’s Tale DVD Review: Colin Farrell's Frozen Love Story

Winter’s Tale arrived on Valentine’s Day in cinemas starring Colin Farrell as a lovestruck bloke and Russell Crowe as the villain who will stop at nothing to get him.

Winter's Tale DVD

Why, you ask? For fans of the bestselling novel by Mark Helprin, they know the reason. For those of you who missed the theatrical release, you can find out now because Winter’s Tale is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

The film is the directorial debut of Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman (who is reuniting with Crowe after penning A Beautiful Mind) and follows Farrell’s Peter Lake. He’s a thief who breaks into Beverly Penn’s (Jessica Brown Findlay of Downton Abbey fame) home entirely unaware that she is there.

Immediately they have an attraction, as seen in the Winter’s Tale trailer. But, their love is one that is star-crossed as she is dying of consumption.

There’s also the fact that Lake has an unusually long life span, which makes his heartache all the more powerful. And then there’s the fact that Crowe’s demonic Pearly Soames is in hot pursuit of him, seeking to end his time on this planet.

In our theatrical Winter’s Tale review, we stated that the film mostly misses the mark, but for fans of romance and the book, they would find the screen version satisfactory. It is unfortunately a bit all over the place and many scenes are just simply stretches on so many levels.

But, when it comes to the Winter’s Tale DVD and Blu-Ray, there are a slew of bonus features that make the entire package a nice gift for fans of the romance genre.

Winter's Tale Colin Farrell Jessica Brown Findlay

Winter’s Tale: A Timeless Love takes a deeper look, and an even better one than the film itself, into the love story of Lake and Penn. Perhaps we needed the description and heartfelt feel that this bonus feature brings to have us pull for these two lovebirds to make it.

And then there’s the element of good versus evil that is ever-present in the film. And there’s even a cameo that seems like it’s right out of left field. There again, the bonus feature Characters of Good & Evil does a better job than the film itself in exploring the notions of the light and dark sides of the worldly coin that is represented by Farrell and Crowe.

Lastly, there are some additional scenes that were cut from the film featured on the home video release that honestly, might have been inserted into the film to help it flow better. But, having them on the Winter’s Tale DVD and Blu-Ray is a priceless addition to make the entire Winter’s Tale experience feel more whole.

Watch Winter's Tale online and get the whole experience, including those bonus features that bring the entire movie to life!

Snowpiercer Exclusive: Ed Harris on What Movie Fans Ask Him About Most

Ed Harris stars in Snowpiercer and it’s one of those roles that the Oscar nominee really cannot talk about. See, Harris’ character and his role is kind of a spoiler. So, when we caught up with Harris, we began with his first reaction to the idea of the story of Snowpiercer.

As shown in the Snowpiercer trailer, humanity has been all but wiped out by a new Ice Age. Those (about 1,000) who have survived are on a train that is circling the globe with a “miracle” engine that never quits. So, what did Harris first think when he heard the concept?

“I thought it was pretty wild. I didn’t know how they were going to pull it off,” Harris admitted. But after seeing wildly inventive director Joon-ho Bong’s other works, he was sold. “He sure knows how to make a film.”

We also asked Harris, who has starred in dozens and dozens of movies, of all of his filmography, which flicks does he get most recognized for? Could one be the film that gave us these The Rock quotes?

Turns out, the answer depends on where he is! Check out the exclusive video interview above and see what he says. And check out Snowpiercer in theaters June 27.

The classic revenge tale gets a shot in the arm, as you can see by the arrival of the trailer for The Prince.

Bruce Willis stars as a man who lives for finding the elusive Jason Patric. See, Patric had something to do with Willis’ family getting wiped out. Well, Patric kind of is a mob enforcer, so it was really his job. So, there’s that.

Patric is suddenly back from hiding and Willis has ammo and that is Patric’s college-aged daughter whom he is holding captive until he gets his revenge, or at least a face-to-face.

The Prince lands in theaters August 22. And the title? That’s Patric’s character’s nickname!

Good to see Willis back in action again, so why not watch Die Hard online and see how Mr. Action Hero truly got his start!

Into the Storm Trailer: Hold On!

What was teased in that first Into the Storm trailer was that this Steven Quale flick was going to give us some of the most amazing storm footage ever created for a film. Well, that was nothing. The full Into the Storm trailer has arrived and all we can say is hold on tight.

The film imagines what happens when the small town of Silverton is inundated by a series of tornados, the likes of which humans have never seen.

Of all the impressive shots in the teaser, we think the most astounding is one of the last. The storm lifts airplanes off the ground and whisks them off into the air!

We get the action from several angles in Into the Storm as we get the locals who are trying to survive and we have a group of storm chasers who are on the ride of their lives.

Into the Storm stars Richard Armitage (check him out when you watch The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug online), Sarah Wayne Callies, Matt Walsh, Max Deacon, Nathan Kress and Scott Lawrence.

Look for Into the Storm to, well, storm into theaters August 8.

It was hardly a shocker that we’re getting a Ride Along sequel. The film did boffo business (over $150 million) and kept that success train moving that is Kevin Hart. As you know from the first Ride Along, Hart and Ice Cube star as the most unlikely of partners in the Tim Story-directed flick.

News arrives today that Benjamin Bratt has joined the cast of Ride Along 2. Variety is reporting that Bratt has joined the cast and that filmmakers are seeking to further expand the multicultural aspect of the flick. Word is, the action will shift from Atlanta to Miami.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Clip: Do Not Come Back!

The latest clip from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes paints a pretty interesting picture.

Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his band of apes have the human stronghold completely surrounded. They are certainly there to make a point, and their massive presence does that and then some.

But, there’s more to this moment than a sheer show of force. Caesar speaks! And as we know from that previously released Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip, Caesar and Jason Clarke’s character have forged a relationship hoping to avert a war between simians and humans.

But, Gary Oldman doesn’t see it that way, and Caesar seeks to make the point that if humans come near them, it will not end well.

What is striking to the humans who are in awe of the sheer magnitude of the apes at their front door is not only just their numbers, but that they speak. And that, more than anything, is utterly terrifying!

Caesar says, “Apes do not want war. Do not come back!”

I’d be like, “OK, consider it done.” But, as we know from that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer, Oldman will do just that.

There are different levels of fear in a horror movie. There’s the type where you actually enjoy the terror and seek to revisit it again and again.

Then, there are those that hit a little too close to home, or strike a nerve of some sort, and we cannot witness them repeatedly -- much less a second time.

For example, watch The Shining online and there is one that Movie Fanatic saw once which still haunts our nightmares. Now, we love a good scare in a horror movie, but there is something truly terrifying about the haunts in that hotel that we never want to check in again. Call us scaredy cats all you want, we won’t go back.

Also, watch Insidious online and there’s another that terrifies us to our core.

Deliver Us From Evil Exclusive: Olivia Munn Salutes Cops' Families

In Deliver Us From Evil, Olivia Munn portrays the wife of Eric Bana, an NYPD officer working the toughest streets in the city.

As seen in the Deliver Us From Evil trailer, Bana’s Sarchie is on the case of an evil that may not be human. The film is based on a true story and as such, Munn sought to bring a reality to it -- one she would have insisted on even if it was fiction.

We caught up with Munn for an exclusive video interview where she let us in on the fact that she even had the script changed to reflect the real life men and women who are the life partners for those who lay their lives on the line every day of the week. She simply didn’t think a woman in her position would say a particular line.

“When I went in to Scott (Derrickson, the director), I said, ‘I don’t want her to be nagging him,'" Munn said. “When you’re the wife of a police officer, you have to understand. There was a point where he came home and she was going to say, ‘Where were you?’ I asked them to take that out. She has to know!”

Munn also admitted that she took inspiration from friends whose husbands are firefighters, cops and in the military -- and sought to bring a tribute to them in her portrayal of Jen.

You can get an insight into the real life inspiration from the film when you see this Deliver Us From Evil clip. And be sure to check out the true-story-inspired horror flick when it lands July 2.

When it comes to what movies will be at Comic-Con, even though it is only a month away, schedules are still pretty wide open. We know there will be biggies there, but there are no confirmations -- until today!

Mark Ruffalo (who recently admitted The Hulk movie is coming) says that the entire Avengers: Age of Ultron cast will take a break from filming in London and head to the California seaside village to the delight of all the fans who will pack the legendary Hall H.

The Avengers in Action

“Yeah, we’re gonna go out there,” Ruffalo admitted to Collider

“We’re all flying. We’re flying from London. We’re working. We’re shooting. We’re gonna stop and get on a plane and go to Comic-Con together. It’s gonna be amazing.”

It will be amazing, that is for sure. And we will finally get to hear more on James Spader as Ultron, from the man playing him!

Plus, it is always a delight to hear from the brilliant man behind the camera, Joss Whedon.

Stay with Movie Fanatic, as always, as we will be front and center in San Diego for Comic-Con.

Now, if we could just get the Star Wars: Episode VII cast to share that London-San Diego flight with the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron... If that happens, we might just explode.

Hercules TV Spot: Discover the Legend

The latest Hercules TV spot is called Discover and we can see why. In a mere 30 seconds filmmaker Brett Ratner does a good job of distinguishing this Hercules story from others that have come before – and we’re not just talking about the one that arrived earlier this year called The Legend of Hercules starring Kellan Lutz.

It was evident from that first Hercules trailer that this is a role that star Dwayne Johnson was born to play. In Hercules, he has been a demi-god and a hero, and decided to “retire” to the life of a family man.

The gods above do not approve and have rained down a horror on the planet that only Hercules can save us from. Johnson’s hero must rise up and find his voice once again and lead his army to victory – with the fate of all humans in the balance.

Hercules also stars Joseph Fiennes, Rufus Sewell, Ian McShane and John Hurt (soon to be seen in Snowpiercer).

Look for Hercules July 25.

Snowpiercer Exclusive: Tilda Swinton on Turning a "Mouse" Into a “Monster”

$

Oscar winner Tilda Swinton was drawn to director Joon-ho Bong’s world of Snowpiercer because of the wildly inventive landscape he created. We were blown away by Snowpiercer (amongst many, many things) by the performance of Swinton.

We caught up with Swinton for an exclusive video interview where we explore the absolutely fantastical and diabolical character she plays, Mason. It was a part that was originally written for a man, but when Swinton’s name started swirling, Bong immediately changed it, and what the helmer and the star did is create movie magic that rivets.

“It’s a masterpiece and I’m so proud to have anything to do with it,” Swinton said.

Swinton seems to have channeled a bit of Margaret Thatcher in the role of a woman who is essentially in charge of keeping the titular train in order.

As can be seen in the Snowpiercer trailer, Swinton works for leader Ed Harris, and his character built a train than can circle the globe on a miracle engine that never needs to be refueled. The world has suffered another Ice Age and the 1,000 or so that have survived have been stuck on this train for the last ten years.

What’s worse, is where their place was on Earth before they entered the train is where they are stuck living through eternity. If you were poor and despondent, that is where you will remain – in the back of the train. And it is Swinton’s job to keep you there!

And for Swinton’s family, seeing their reaction to the film will be the best part. “When my brothers see this film, they are going to laugh so hard,” she said. “It’s an in-joke between me and my three brothers!”
