James Bond vs. Blood and Ice Cream: Tournament of Movie Fanatic Franchises Bracket

With only three matchups left in the first round of the Tournament of Movie Fanatic Franchises Bracket, we turn our attention to perhaps one of the most unusual battles of the entire bracket.

Before we discuss today's films, however, remember that you can still vote in all of our previous matchups: Ghostbusters vs. Bourne, Harry Potter vs. Star Trek, Batman vs. Superman, Star Wars vs. Scream, and Toy Story vs. Back to the Future.

Today we pit one of the most iconic movie franchises in history against a modern cult favorite, as the three-seed James Bond series takes on the six-seed Blood and Ice Cream trilogy. James Bond Movies:

James Bond first landed in 1953 on the pages of the Ian Fleming book Casino Royale. Fleming’s novels would shape the character onscreen for years after his passing, and set the standard for the franchise that is still honored today with Daniel Craig in the role.

The first Bond film, Dr. No, arrived in 1962 with Scottish actor Sean Connery in the lead. Americans began their obsession with 007 when President John F. Kennedy was asked what movie he was looking forward to most. When he said, “Dr. No,” a phenomenon was born.

Fifty years and 23 films later, the British superspy has enthralled billions of fans and raked in billions of dollars. No franchise in the history of film has had that kind of run, much less that kind of success. Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy:

This is perhaps the least "franchisey" franchise in our bracket, but we think it absolutely deserves to be here. The loosely-connected "thematic franchise"includes the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the upcoming movie The World's End.

While the films feature different characters and plotlines, they all reuse the same key players, and all feature the same biting wit and ominous supernatural elements. Also referred to as the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, the series uses a new flavor of Cornetto ice cream in each film, to signify the different storylines.

Pegg and Wright have brilliantly merged elements of nerd culture, sci-fi, horror, and comedy in a way that has scarcely been seen before. The franchise stands out from other supernatural, horror, or sci-fi comedies like Zombieland, Men In Black, and even the Ghostbusters franchise, because of the uniquely crisp and modern visual style, the bizarre secondary characters, and the unparalleled humor that comes from placing a completely relatable protagonist in a completely outlandish situation.
