The Longest Daycare Trailer: Maggie Simpson's Short Adventure

$

0

Maggie Simpson is finally getting the screen time she deserves. Poor thing's been a baby for 25 years! The least they could do is give her a short.

Yes, The Simpsons are returning to the big screen. Only this time, it's in a 3-D short film with no dialogue and Maggie as the star. Check out the (extremely short) trailer below:

The Longest Daycare was conceived as a sort of "thank you" to the loyal Simpsons fans who have been with the show since its premiere season in 1989. It features Maggie returning to the Ayn Rand School for Tots. Deemed to have no future prospects, she is left in a "not so great" room.

The film runs 4 1/2 minutes and will be shown before screenings on Ice Age: Continental Drift beginning July 13.

Weekend Movie Preview: July 6, 2012

What’s new at the Multiplex this weekend? Oliver Stone returns to his criminal roots in Savages, Katy Perry gets the biopic/concert film treatment in Part of Me and Morgan Freeman and Rob Reiner re-team for The Magic of Belle Isle. But, look for the weekend box office winner to be the film that arrived on screens earlier this week, The Amazing Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield is Peter Parker and the guy could not have been better cast. The Marc Webb film is basically the same story we all know so well from the Sam Raimi trilogy, but told with a better cast, better action and 3D that will blow your mind. Also, as we state in our The Amazing Spider-Man review, having the villain be The Lizard gives the story a much more personal feel to our hero.

Savages: Oliver Stone has crafted a riveting and brutish thriller based on the bestselling book by Don Winslow. Taylor Kitsch breaks out of his sci-fi hold of late and rivets in every frame. John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson and Demian Bichir fill out this astounding cast that rocks, according to our Savages review.

Katy Perry: Part of Me: The pop songstress presents a surprisingly inspiring tale of sticking to your guns, following your dreams and success will follow. Perry does not shy away from showing the more difficult aspects of her life, particularly her divorce to Russell Brand. Toss in a cavalcade of her hits including Hot and Cold, I Kissed a Girl and Teenage Dream and as said in our Katy Perry: Part of Me review… this film is one heck of a Firework.

The Magic of Belle Isle: Reiner and Freeman join forces after their successful The Bucket List, but the result is a little less satisfying. Freeman is an alcoholic writer who finds new inspiration in life when he spends a summer at the titular locale. Our The Magic of Belle Isle review delves deeper, but overall… this is light entertainment.

Lawless Graphic Highlights the Handguns

You can't be lawless without a few pistols, right? According to this new Lawless graphic, the guns play an important role in the neo-Western (though the film takes place in Virginia, so maybe it should be called an Eastern).

The poster features the characters Forrest and Howard Bondurant, played by Tom Hardy (Bane in The Dark Knight Rises), and Jason Clarke (who will appear in the upcoming The Great Gatsby), as well as Guy Pearce as Deputy Charles Rakes. More importantly, it features a Colt Detective, a Smith & Wesson, and a Webley & Scott.

Lawless Guns Graphic

The graphic is part of a series that will be released via MTV once a week, featuring the guns of the other characters. Those characters are played by the likes of Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, and Jessica Chastain.

The bootlegging film based on the Matt Bondurant book The Wettest County in the World will premiere August 31. For more, check out the Lawless trailer.

The action sequel stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis (Moonrise Kingdom), and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I'm out of breath, and I was just typing.

The Amazing Spider-Man Interview: Rhys Ifans is The Lizard

Rhys Ifans has had quite the varied past 12 months. From appearing as Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 to portraying the Earl of Oxford in Anonymous and his role opposite Emily Blunt in The Five-Year Engagement, that alone would make some actors' careers. But Ifans is not done as he is the embodiment of evil as his character Dr. Curt Connors evolves into The Amazing Spider-Man's the Lizard.

The Amazing Spider-Man Rhys Ifans
Meeting with Movie Fanatic recently in New York City, the U.K. actor told how he culled his theater background to work with the imagination that filming alongside a green screen requires.

“Theatrical training really helps when it comes to green screen performance and stuff like that. In the theater you do have to apply your imagination a lot more than you would on a film set,” Ifans said.

“Generally, if you're looking at a New York landscape in a film they fly you to New York and you look at the landscape. In the theater, you have to conjure it all in your mind.”

The biggest challenge of Ifans' wasn’t the green screen, acting across Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker or finding Connors' motivation for turning into the Lizard.

“I would have to sit in a makeup chair for up to seven or eight hours with four makeup artists -- and I do emphasize the word artists -- working on various parts of my body, applying these silicon pieces and painting each scale individually. After seven hours in a chair with not nearly enough cigarettes, I was kind of in the right mental state to play a man who is about to transform into a nine-foot lizard.”

Rhys Ifans The Amazing Spider-Man
Ifans is quite a rock and roller in his own right, having recorded music on many an occasion. Knowing that, director Marc Webb played music while Connors was transforming into the Lizard to aid with his actor’s effort.

“When we were shooting the scene where Connors for the first time sees his new hand appear through this kind of reptilian cocoon, Marc played Velvet Underground's Heroin, on set. It's a beautiful song about addiction. So we let this whole song run and let this hand appear and it was really moving,” Ifans said.

“We didn't use it in the movie, of course. But that's the way Marc works -- we were kind of supplied with a soundtrack a lot of the time. That's the rock 'n' roll bit.”

Given Heroin’s message of addiction, Ifans saw it as a brilliant choice especially considering his opinion on what he thinks Dr. Connors goes through when he becomes the Lizard.

“The drug he takes gives him this sense of euphoria and the strength of 10 men, I guess something like crystal meth. And that feeling becomes addictive to Connors and that's why he keeps returning to the Lizard because when guys are on these drugs they feel so brilliant they want the rest of the world to feel as good as them, even though it's ultimately destructive to themselves and everyone around them,” Ifans said.

Hotel Transylvania Exclusive: Genndy Tartakovsky on Monster Family Film

When Genndy Tartakovsky came onboard to direct Hotel Transylvania, the TV animation veteran thought he’d have his hands full with slapstick animated humor given the fact that the film stars Adam Sandler as Dracula. The helmer told us exclusively on a recent visit to the Sony Pictures Animation campus that wound up not being the case.

Hotel Transylvania Adam Sandler Selena Gomez
“I realized it’s not going to be that crazy,” Tartakovsky said. The picture is funny, that much is for sure given the recent Hotel Transylvania trailer we have seen, but at its heart, this is a story about being an overprotective parent.

“I grew up in a different time where you could ride your bikes until dark. My son is ten, and we have a hard time letting him go out and ride his bike by himself. You feel those same things in Hotel Transylvania,” he said.

In the film, Dracula’s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) is celebrating her 118th birthday and, as promised, she is allowed to venture into the world. Given that that world does not like monsters, Sandler’s Dracula is having serious issues. Since something bad happened to his wife, Mavis’ mother, at the hands of humans, he built the Hotel Transylvania as a respite for monsters fleeing man’s wrath.

“Dracula doesn’t want to let go. The film is all about over-protectiveness, but at the same time, that’s all he’s got now. It’s about building trust that all families can identify with.”

As Gore Verbinski did in Rango, Tartakovsky wanted his actors performing together in the voice booth as much as possible. “Especially for the main relationships like Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, to watch them go at it together, was really great… you felt the energy right away,” he said.

Most animated films find their leads coming in at all different times to record their vocal tracks. With a cast that includes Sandler and Gomez, not to mention comedy heavyweights Kevin James, Samberg, David Spade and Jon Lovitz, Hotel Transylvania’s director wanted as much comic interaction as possible -- also, to bring the heart.

“I am a big supporter of feeling things… when you felt it… it was real. Coming from TV, we did that all the time. We always have the characters together. I don’t know if it’s frowned upon in features or it's because of people's schedules, but there’s a funny thing about it,” Tartakovsky said.

“Adam even asked me when we first met, ‘Will I be able to record with anybody?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if you want -- absolutely.’ It was worth it.”

Tartakovsky was worried about one performer, Gomez. As Gomez said in our interview, this is one of her first animated films and the director was not sure what he would get from her in such a crucial role. “One of the animators here provided the scratch track before Selena came in and we were really liking it. Then she came in and had great sincerity and started to nail it. You felt the character come out,” he said.

Genndy Tartakovsky Crafting Hotel Transylvania
Her chemistry with her onscreen dad even popped the first moment Sandler and Gomez got together. “There was a nice dynamic between them. Some of the comedic scenes she did with Adam worked out really well. She was so professional… she brought this heart to the character. Of all the characters, she needed to bring that in spades and she did.”

Coming from years of TV animation work, the helmer was a little nervous to tackle a big screen project, yet couldn’t wait to get in there and make his mark… even if he was one of the last people hired. “It was like parachuting into a combat zone,” Tartakovsky said and laughed.

But, it was his past on TV that allowed him to come in with a strong point of view.

“I had confidence. I worked in the industry for a long time and I’ve made a lot of mistakes and I’ve told a lot of jokes -- some worked, some fell flat. So I felt like I know how to communicate a joke in a specific way -- how to shoot it, how to perform it. That’s really what my job is, to communicate these ideas,” he said.

“I can’t imagine doing this project without doing the amount of work that I’ve done. It is a constant test. People are tugging at you 24/7 and [laughs] you have to stay strong because the movie will go left and right and never get anywhere.”

Fifty Shades of Grey Nabs Social Network Producers

Don't be fooled like I was. Fifty Shades of Grey is not a coloring book for color-bind children (yes, I already apologized to my niece).

Fifty Shades of Grey is in fact the unlikely erotic novel that has dominated the zeitgeist for the past several months. And now, unsurprisingly, the book is being turned into a film. With lots of producers vying to get their hands on the work, author E.L. James picked Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, the team behind The Social Network.

Fifty Shades of Grey

The novel began as a series of Twilight fan fiction pieces posted online. While those my be some pretty humble beginnings for a bestselling novel, you tell Hollywood "Twilight plus BDSM," the producers will flock.

The book follows the sexual relationship between billionaire Christian Grey and submissive college student Anastasia Steele (whose character names were changed at some point from Edward Cullen and Bella Swan).

The film will likely be fast-tracked, with the biggest question remaining being: who should play Christian and Anastasia? Names like Ian Somerhalder (Vampire Diaries), Ryan Gosling, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum have been floated as possible candidates for the lead role. Who do you think would make the best Christian Grey? Let us know in the comments section!

A new TV spot for The Dark Knight Rises features a surprising appearance from comedic actor/writer Thomas Lennon as a doctor. The actor injects a little light-heartedness into was has been a relentlessly dark ad campaign. Check it out:

Apparently Batman's doctor has advised against returning to crime fighting (or heli-skiing as he apparently uses as his cover). I'm gonna guess the advice won't sink in, as Bane is threatening Gotham City and Catwoman is wearing really tight pants.

The Dark Knight Rises is gearing up for its premier next Friday, and Comic-Con is getting underway, so expect a few more little surprises from the film in the coming days, and catch it in theaters July 20.

Scarlett Johansson Gets Set for a Big Payday: Black Widow to Earn $20 Million

So, some of us have probably thought about what Scarlett Johansson might do for $20 million. Now we know: appear in The Avengers 2.

According to The New York Post, the indie darling-turned action star is reportedly asking for a $20 million sum to reprise her role as Black Widow in The Avengers sequel. The amount would break a $19 million record for an actress set by Angelina Jolie for The Tourist.

If Marvel wants to avoid having to use The Avengers action figure for Black Widow's scenes, then they'll have to pay up. But with The Avengers having taken the box office by storm earlier this summer, that shouldn't be a problem.

Johansson's Avengers cohorts are busy at work on their own films, with Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, and Thor 2 all making appearances at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego. With one part of the large team of Earth's Mightiest Heroes bringing home $20 million, one can only wonder what the acting budget will be on the new film.

Here's a picture of ScarJo during the negotiation process:

American Reunion Exclusive: Thomas Ian Nicholas Talks Reuniting

$

American Reunion lands on Blu-Ray July 10 and star Thomas Ian Nicholas talks exclusively about how making this American Pie film was a much more enjoyable experience than any other. Don’t get us wrong, he adores every second appearing with the cast he first joined 12 years ago. But, since this film was shot on location, it truly felt like an environment to further enhance the casts’ already strong bond.

American Reunion Cast
“It was the most fun we’ve had making one of these films. Instead of doing our own thing on the weekends, we were hanging out with each other. It was more a reunion for us as people than it was for the characters,” Nicholas said and laughed.

“I really dig the idea of shooting on location. It gets you out of your own routine and responsibilities at home and puts you in a bubble with everyone. That’s one of the things I like most about film versus television is that you have this project that has a beginning, middle and end and it’s an entity that exists on its own. You delve into it and emerge on the other side and wonder what just happened.”

Nicholas cannot put a finger on why audiences have responded for years to the hijinx of this cast shown prominently on the American Reunion poster -- a group that also includes Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott and, of course, Jason Biggs.

“Part of it is a lightning in a bottle thing to be a part of that. It’s always easy to look at something that is or has some success and dissect what it was. The only thing I’ve ever noticed from the beginning -- and I noticed it the first time I read the script for American Pie -- was that the script had heart,” he said.

“To me it seems it’s the one thing that was maintained throughout the films that sets it apart from other teen gross-out sex comedies and why we get away with so much. We have that juxtaposition with crazy things happening and heartfelt characters.”

Working with the Weitz brothers on the first film mirrored their experience working with two directors -- Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg -- on the latest film, one that has given us so many cherished American Reunion quotes.

“Each director has had their own style. The first one was directed by Paul and Chris Weitz. Granted they were brothers but the way that they worked together was in a very similar nature to the way that Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg worked together,” Nicholas said. “Having two directors again was also a bit nostalgic.”

American Reunion Blu-Ray
What he enjoys most about portraying Kevin all these years is that it allows the actor to be the straight man, something cherished in comedy.

“There’s a lot of things I appreciate about him. I also appreciate the fact that he really doesn’t have to do a lot of the embarrassing stuff in the films,” he said and laughed.

“I guess also that he’s the straight guy of the comedy group, which in my mind is one of the most important aspects of a comedy group, but often one of the least appreciated. But I really value that about Kevin. It’s kind of like the straighter I play it and the more serious that I am, the more outlandish characters like Jim (Biggs) or Stifler (Scott) can be.”

Savages Exclusive: Don Winslow on Inspiration & Oliver Stone

$

0

For the bestselling author of Savages, witnessing characters he created live and breathe on the silver screen was an otherworldly experience. “It's wild. It's crazy,” Don Winslow told us exclusively from his San Diego home.

Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson in Savages
“You’re sitting a few years ago with these little ideas in your head and these characters. Then a couple of years down the line -- it’s been really fast -- you’re sitting in this movie theater with a bunch of people looking up at this big screen and now they’re doing things and saying things that you had thought about, or just interior thoughts,” Winslow said.

“It’s trippy. It’s crazy. I don’t think I’m doing a very good job of describing it, except to say it was at the same time kind of nervous making and exciting and strange."

There is none trippier than Oliver Stone. When asked about the legendary filmmaker, Winslow smiled. “Well, he’s Oliver Stone. It’s everything you’d expect,” he said and laughed.

“It was an intense experience. Oliver is Oliver. He’s made some of the most iconic movies of all time.”

What clearly rocked his world is how a screen icon in John Travolta was portraying one of those characters he created long ago.

“That’s John freaking Travolta,” Winslow said, laughing. But in all honesty, he was equally as impressed with that entire cast featured on the Savages poster.

“I felt that way kind of across the board, looking at Salma Hayek and Benicio Del Toro, and also the younger cast, Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch and Blake Lively. It was a lot of fun. But again, I live in this little town and live a quiet, contained life, so seeing that burst out on the screen and knowing that millions of people went to see it last weekend, it’s an experience.”

As job creation dominates the evening news, Winslow felt a certain level of patriotic fervor in bringing employment to several hundred people, all due to his prose.

“It’s a bit of a cliché, but it was also humbling. One of the nicest things for me about the book being made into a film because I also sat through the end of the credits and it made me feel so good that so many people got work,” Winslow admitted.

“With all of the stars and Oliver and all that, believe me that’s great and exciting and very gratifying, but one of the most gratifying things I thought about while I was watching it, especially when the credits were rolling in the end, was I’m just really glad that a bunch of people got to pay their bills, do stuff and pay tuition and all that kind of stuff -- that made me feel good.”

When it comes to where the Savages story came from, the author gets as real as possible.

“The hit clip that starts the film is very real -- not the one in the film. There was a video clip of seven decapitated bodies that was sent to me via email. That’s the origins story of that tale,” Winslow said and paused.

Don Winslow Picture
That’s all the specifics he’ll share about the haunting video he received. Yet, even with the horror that surrounds chronicling the work of the drug cartels and those ensnarled in its grasp, Winslow sought to tell a tale about family. It is one that resonates further in his literary prequel out now, Kings of Cool.

“I want to tell stories about people in generations and families and so I don’t think just seeing the film clip would have been motivation enough as grizzly and upsetting as it was. I’ve been wanting to write about that culture and that sub-culture for a while, the whole Laguna Beach/Orange County kind of thing, which I did in Savages in a very fast kind of way. I just had this book come out, The Kings of Cool, which is a prequel to Savages, which tells the story of really the origin of the drug trade in Southern California.”

That feeling of family and its varying of definitions is what led the hit movie’s book author to delve deeper… into the past for Kings of Cool.

Kings of Cool is a story about families. Really, Savages is in a way too. I always knew the origins story of those characters, of the culture, of the drug trade. When I was writing Savages, those origins stories informed those characters and I hoped it’s what helped make them real and immediate to people,” Winslow reflected. “They’re forced to choose between their blood families and the families that they’ve created among their friends. That’s the story I was really trying to tell with Kings of Cool.”

He knew then he had a prequel. “They were the bottom of the iceberg, if you will. This sounds presumptuous, but I wanted to tell a story about America, a little bit, about the trip the country has taken over those decades, as seen through the filter of the drug trade,” Winslow said. “That was a big motivation.”

Ghostbusters 3 Nabs Men In Black 3 Screenwriter: Still No 'Yes' From Bill Murray

$
0
0

Ghostbusters 3 is one of the most talked-about sequels-that-never-was. But now the sequel-that-never was is shaping up to 'was' (I'm a writer!).

With Bill Murray being very vocal about the fact that he wold not participate in a new Ghostbusters unless it was done really well (and the script he read, well, wasn't), Sony Pictures has hired Etan Cohen to rewrite the script.

Cohen, who wrote for Mike Judge's shows Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill, has also written some big films in recent years, including Men In Black 3 and Tropic Thunder. With so much comedy experience, as evidenced by all the hilarious Tropic Thunder quotes, and some comedy sci-fi experience, Cohen figures to be a great choice of writer.

The only question remaining is whether or not the script will be up to Murray's standards. While Murray would be sorely missed if he were to not participate, I have to say that I respect the man for not wanting to take part in ruining a beloved franchise. Hopefully, though, everything can be worked out, Murray will star, and the film will be great!
