Superhero Movies: Which Film is Best?

0
0

The Dark Knight Rises has almost landed. After following up The Dark Knight -- one of the best of the genre -- we wondered who else would reside on that list of the most super of superhero movies. Could it be Superman? Perhaps, it's Iron Man or The Avengers?

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in The Avengers
The Dark Knight has to be one of the toughest films for a director to follow up, much less close out his trilogy. Yet, as we describe in our The Dark Knight Rises review, Christopher Nolan achieves greatness in his final foray into Gotham. We’ll conduct a poll after the film lands to see what you all think of it and where it places in the superhero film landscape, but for now… riddle me this, Batman:

Which superhero movie is the best of all-time?

Guillermo Del Toro directs the film, which pays homage to Japanese monster movies. Pacific Rim premieres on July 12, 2013. Check out our interview with Guillermo Del Toro from Comic-Con for the inside scoop on the film.

The Dark Knight Rises Interview: Christopher Nolan Finds the End

Christopher Nolan is set for the whole Batman thing to be over. But, it is with a heavy heart that he releases The Dark Knight Rises. The filmmaker is fundamentally changed by the experience that began with Batman Begins and now closes with him and Christian Bale and their final foray into the world of the Caped Crusader.

Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight Rises Set Pic
Nolan sat down to talk about his Dark Knight swan song and provided an insight into the franchise that nobody can capture as much as the man who is behind it. As so effectively shown in The Dark Knight Rises MTV Movie Awards footage, he revolutionized the superhero movie and proved that it can be Oscar worthy.

Movie Fanatic: Is there one element of the Batman story that you keep throughout?

Christopher Nolan: When you look back on the films, you can see the world we’re living in reflected, but we don’t want to be specific about it. We just come at the stories from the point of view of what concerns us. What gives us fear? What gives us hope? What would require a hero of Batman’s stature to rise up in our world?

Movie Fanatic: Can you talk a bit about how the two films have fed into the third?

Christopher Nolan: Our story picks up eight years later, when it seems that Batman and Commissioner Gordon have succeeded in that the Dark Knight is no longer needed in Gotham. In that regard, Bruce Wayne has won the battle, but he is traumatized by what happened and doesn’t know how to move on from being the figure of Batman. The Dark Knight Rises very much deals with the consequences of his and other characters’ actions in the previous films.

Movie Fanatic: After the huge success of the last film, what was the weight on your shoulders about even trying to write the next film?

Christopher Nolan: I think you have to forget that pressure and just get on and try to make the best film that you can. We felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to fulfill expectations based on the first two movies while giving the audience something they hadn’t seen before. It was a tricky balance. Myself, Jonathan Nolan (screenwriter) and David Goyer, our other writing partner, at the early stage, we felt a lot of pressure.

Movie Fanatic: How do we find Bruce Wayne as The Dark Knight Rises as he has won the war on crime in Gotham?

Christopher Nolan: We come back to find a man who is no longer on a mission, even though that had always been the goal. The reason I have always gravitated to the character of Batman is that, as often noted, he is a superhero with no superpowers, apart from his wealth. His extraordinary nature has always come down to his extreme motivation and sheer dedication, which makes him a very credible individual. It’s been very rewarding to watch Christian Bale chart the progression of his role through the three films.

Movie Fanatic: By introducing The Dark Knight Rises' Bane as the villain, you have physically at least, introduced someone who could effectively destroy Batman…

Christopher Nolan: In deciding on who the next villain would be, it was imperative that it was someone completely different from the Joker -- that he be a brute force. Bane is raw strength with a fanatical devotion to duty, and that combination makes him unstoppable. When you’re creating a monstrous presence like Bane in a movie, you could concentrate just on the physical or you could focus on the more psychological aspects. With Tom Hardy, I knew I would get the whole package.

Christopher Nolan Directs The Dark Knight Rises
Movie Fanatic:
Where do you think that sentiment originated?

Christopher Nolan: There’s a very important scene between Michael Caine’s character, Alfred, and Christian’s character in Batman Begins. They’re on the plane and they talk about the symbolism of the bat. Alfred, as somebody who looks after him and cares for him, the only reason he goes along with it is that there’s a logic to it. The logic which we found as we worked on the character was it had to be about symbolism. That’s really always been at the heart of Bruce Wayne’s story.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think is at the heart of why your Batman trilogy has been so successful?

Christopher Nolan: Really, these films are about entertainment. They are about story and character. But what we do is we try and be very sincere in the things that frighten us or motivate us. We try to be very sincere about that, and I think resonances that people find or that happen to occur with what’s going on in the real world. To me, they come about really as a result of us just living in the same world that we all do and trying to construct scenarios that move us, or terrify us -- in the case of a villain like Bane and what he might do to the world.

The Irish actor and his film’s director, Rodrigo Cortes, visit with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview. The duo extol the virtues of working with the legend that is the film’s co-star Robert De Niro and what it is about this supernatural story that should resonate for all.

As we state in our Red Lights review, Murphy is a star to be reckoned with as his career skyrockets. He steals scenes left and right from the legend De Niro, and the Irish actor admits, it was a career highlight.

5 Things to Know About The Dark Knight Rises

0
0

The moment has finally arrived for Caped Crusader fans worldwide -- The Dark Knight Rises lands in theaters at midnight tonight. Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film promises great thrills and a satisfying conclusion, as we state in our The Dark Knight Rises review.

The Dark Knight Rises News
But, before you head into the theaters, Movie Fanatic presents a spoiler-free quintet of things you want to know before the lights go down and the epic conclusion begins.

1. Bane is Beautiful
Despite internet buzz earlier this year about trouble understanding The Dark Knight Rises Bane, the Tom Hardy performance is crystal clear. In fact, his voice is so awesome -- we’ve been walking around the house trying to imitate it for days now. Hardy crafts a performance that is powerful, brutish and yes, beautiful.

2. Catwoman isn’t Catwoman
Anne Hathaway is astounding as Selena Kyle, but one thing needs to be said: Never do they refer to her in Dark Knight Rises as Catwoman. Sure, she’s a cat burglar that serves as the catalyst to get a reclusive Bruce Wayne to don the batsuit once again. Yes, she wears cat ears to a masked ball. But the famous moniker is never used… and rightfully so.

3. Don’t Believe What You’ve Heard
David Letterman famously had Hathaway on his show the other night and shocked her, and audiences, by revealing the ending. A reporter at The Dark Knight Rises' press conference was scolded by Nolan for asking a question that appeared to give away the ending. Both of these instances have produced numerous reports in the media about how the film ends. Don’t believe it. Nothing that is said could ruin the spectacle that is Nolan’s conclusion.

4. Harvey Dent Looms Large
Although Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) perished in The Dark Knight, his persona is felt enormously in The Dark Knight Rises. Whether it’s the reason that Batman/Bruce Wayne went into hiding or serving as the motivation for Bane’s badness, Dent does exist in spirit in the final Dark Knight film.

5. Batman’s Bounty
We will never see a superhero franchise like this again. Savor your moments in theaters this weekend as we will likely never have the lightning-in-a-bottle moment again where a superhero franchise meets a star in Bale and a director in Nolan that craft a film series that is not only a stellar piece of superhero filmmaking, but a classic film series period.

Marriages can be tough. I mean, there's gonna be some fights. Case in point: the new Total Recall clip. Check it out:

Total Recall stars Colin Farrell as Doug Quaid, a factory worker who discovers that his memory has been erased and he is in fact a secret agent. The film, a remake of the 1990 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Expendables 2), takes place in a futuristic world where a company called Rekall can implant customers with fake memories.

Kate Beckinsale stars as Colin Farrell's "wife," with Jessica Biel as a Resistance member who joins up with Quaid. Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston and Star Trek's Jon Cho also star.

Renner has emerged as a bona fide action star after starring as Hawkeye in The Avengers (grab his Avengers wallpaper here). Now, he takes over a franchise that began with Matt Damon.

Rachel Weisz (Oz: the Great and Powerful), Edward Norton, and Stacy Keach also star. The film is directed by Tony Gilroy, who also co-wrote every film in the Bourne series.

The Bourne Legacy comes out August 10, having been pushed back a week to avoid competing directly with Total Recall. Until then, check out The Bourne Legacy trailer.

The Dark Knight Rises Interview: Christian Bale Says Goodbye

0

It’s easy to see how The Dark Knight Rises star Christian Bale can be nostalgic as his Batman series comes to a close. When the actor sat down to talk about his and Christopher Nolan’s final journey into Gotham, Bale recalled when he first donned the batsuit.

Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises
“I think the very first time I had the costume on was at the audition. I think it was Val Kilmer’s,” Bale said and laughed. “It didn’t fit very well.”

The truth is once he did get fully into the suit, Bale believed Nolan had made a mistake.

“The first time that I ever truly put on the actual one myself, I thought, ‘Oh, Chris has to recast.’ The claustrophobia was just unbelievable. I stood there and I thought, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t think. This is too tight. This is squeezing my head. I’m going to panic. I’m about to have a nervous breakdown. I’m about to have a panic attack,’” Bale recalled.

“I asked for 20 minutes by myself because people are around you asking, ‘What’s it feel like?’ They left and I just stood there and I thought, ‘I'd really like to make this movie. I'd really like to be able to get through this moment here.' Then I called them back in and said, ‘Okay, let's just talk very calmly and quietly and maybe I can get through this.’ And I learned to.”

As Bruce Wayne makes adjustments to his suit, do did Bale. “We improved the suit for ourselves and it became actually far more comfortable,” he said. “Primarily also that panic attack aspect was lost, because I was able to rip it off myself if I ever did start seeing stars and couldn't breathe.”

The next natural question is then for Bale to share what it was like the last time he put on the suit.

“It was a very similar thing. We were doing this scene as Batman. It was with Anne (Hathaway) as Catwoman on a roof in New York, in Manhattan. And I was wrapped and the whole movie was a wrap. I just went down and sat in a room and I realized… this is it. I'm never going to be taking this cowl off again. So again, I said, ‘Can you please leave me alone for 20 minutes?’ With that moment it was with the realization of everything we'd done and a real pride of having achieved what we had set out to do.”

Morgan Freeman and Christian Bale The Dark Knight Rises
The actor has much to be proud of in his stellar career, one that includes a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work on The Fighter. And Bale knows much of it has to do with the opportunity that playing Batman has brought him.

“It was a very important moment for me. It's been a very important character. It's the only time I've played a character three times. And the movies themselves have changed my life and changed my career, so I wanted to just appreciate that for a little while.”

Talking Batman with Bale, one cannot help but drift the conversation into the sea of brilliance that is Nolan -- as noted in our The Dark Knight Rises review. “I’ve always found it uncanny with Chris’ ability to make movies very topical,” Bale said.

“There was something that happened with Occupy Wall Street, which actually happened a couple of blocks away from where we were filming in New York. He had no way of knowing that was going to happen when he wrote the script and when we started. But by the time it was happening, I was looking at him going, ‘What the hell? How did you know?’”

In The Dark Knight Rises Bane is the villain, and as such Bale believes he is an impeccable choice given what the baddie does physically and emotionally to Bruce Wayne/Batman. “This is the first time it appears highly unlikely that Batman will come out on top in a physical altercation. He has been dormant for years, so he’s in a weakened condition to begin with,” Bale said.

“And Bane is not only incredibly strong, but ruthless in terms of his sheer militancy and the ideology that drives him.”

The Dark Knight Rises Stars Christian Bale
Given what happened to him in The Dark Knight, it is understandable that Nolan’s third film would involve such deep soul searching on the part of our hero. “Bruce feels absolutely isolated since the tragedy of losing the woman he loved, Rachel, and the terrible turn of events with what happened to Harvey Dent,” Bale said.

“He carries a certain amount of guilt that if he had not chosen the course of becoming Batman, none of that would have happened. His belief has been rocked and that has caught up with him, physically and emotionally.”

Bale believes that he and the franchise have come full circle with The Dark Knight Rises.

“In Batman Begins, you see the tragedy and the pain that motivates this angry young man, who feels useless and is searching for a path -- who wants to find out who he is and what he can become,” Bale said.

“Then, in The Dark Knight, he’s discovered that path. He is useful. He is doing what he imagines is the best thing for him to be doing in his life. Now, we are eight years on and he has lost the one thing that gave him a purpose… until he is forced to deal with a new threat to the city and to himself.”

Disney has released the complete voice cast for its upcoming 3D animated film Wreck-It Ralph. The film stars John C. Reilly as Wreck-It Ralph, an arcade game villain who abandons his game in search of a new life.

Jack McBrayer stars as Fix-It Felix, the hero of the arcade game, with Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman also lending their voices.

But we already knew all that. Here's the rest of the cast: Ed O'Neil, Mindy Kaling (The Five Year Engagement), Alan Tudyk, Adam Carolla, Rachael Harris (The Hangover), and Horatio Sanz.

The film takes a beloved element of childhood and transforms it to something new. Seth MacFarlane did something similar earlier this year with Ted (though to a much different end). Check out some Ted quotes for a look.

The Words is an upcoming thriller starring Bradley Cooper and a bunch of words. At least, that's what this new motion poster portends (mouse over the image to get the full motion poster-y experience):

Cooper plays Rory Jansen, an author coming off a huge success. Jansen makes a fatal mistake, however, when he steals another man's work. Now he must face the consequences.

Olivia Wilde, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, and Zoe Saldana (who is currently working on the Star Trek sequel) also star. The film was written and directed by Brian Klugman.

The Campaign Trailer: Ferrell v. Galifianakis

There's a new trailer for the upcoming comedy The Campaign. Have a look-see:

The film stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as Cam Brady and Marty Huggins, two dimwit Congressional candidates (That's redundant! #AMIRIGHT? #PoliticalHumor!). Dylan McDermott, Jason Sudeikis, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, and Dan Aykroyd also star.

Ferrell has carved a name for himself playing hilariously bullheaded comedic antiheroes, the most well-known of which is Ron Burgundy from Anchorman. He is now hard at work on an upcoming Anchorman sequel. Check out some of the best Anchorman quotes for a laugh.

Galifianakis, on the other hand, is best known for his uncomfortably weird characters. Case in point: Alan from The Hangover movies, whose peculiar demeanor is evidenced in these Hangover quotes.

The Campaign hits theaters August 10. For more, check out these Huggins and Brady Campaign posters.

12 Killed, 38 Wounded in Shooting During Colorado Midnight Screening of The Dark Knight Rises

A gunman released tear gas on a move theater audience in Aurora, Colorado during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises last night, before opening fire, killing 12 and wounding at least 38.

Police arrested James Holmes, 24, the man believed to be responsible for the horrific incident, in a parking lot behind the theater.

In response, Warner Bros. has cancelled a red carpet event scheduled this evening in Paris, and released the following statement:

"Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."

President Obama released a statement telling citizens of Aurora, “We will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.”

The following is a video of the 911 calls placed during the shooting. Warning: They are disturbing in nature.

Cities around the country are taking added precautions in response to the tragedy. The NYPD released the following statement:

"As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the The Dark Knight Rises is playing in the five boroughs."

We are truly disheartened by these events, and our thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. We will continue to update you on this story as it unfolds.

The Dark Knight Rises Earns $27 Million From Midnight Screenings: Results Tainted by Tragedy

0
0

It is difficult to care about ticket sales given the tragedy that occurred in Aurora, Colorado early this morning. But, it is precisely our job to report movie news, and here's a big piece of movie news: Warner Bros. reports that The Dark Knight Rises has earned $27 million in ticket sales from midnight screenings alone.

The number puts TDKR far ahead of The Avengers, which earned $18.4 million at its midnight opening.

The record for midnight take-ins belongs to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2, which grossed a whopping $43.5 million.

Can The Dark Knight Rises surpass the total gross of The Avengers? It's difficult to say, especially given how the Aurora shooting may taint moviegoers' experience over the weekend and beyond.

Selina Kyle, Bruce Wayne, Bane, and The Dark Knight Rises are certainly off to a good start, though.

The Master Theatrical Trailer: Above All I am a Man

Check out the new trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's new film The Master, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies:

The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd, an intellectual who begins a religious organization following World War II. Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell, a disturbed drifter who is taken in by Dodd. As Dodd's following grows, Quell begins to question the validity of his mentor's teachings.

Laura Dern also stars along with Amy Adams, who will play Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman film Man of Steel. Hoffman, meanwhile, has recently been added to the Catching Fire cast.

Anderson, who began his career with satirical, stylized, subtly humorous dramas like Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love, turned to darkly dramatic realism with his last film There Will Be Blood. From the looks of the trailer, The Master follows in the footsteps of that last film.

The Master hits theaters October 12. For a closer look at Phoenix's compelling performance, check out this earlier The Master trailer.
