Top 10 Remakes: Who's Number One?

$
0
0

As another Hollywood remake, Total Recall, hits theaters -- and a good one at that -- Movie Fanatic takes a look at the top 10 remakes of all time.

Although the film that features Colin Farrell stepping into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s shoes is not on our top 10 list that spans Hollywood history, the following films are pure examples of when Hollywood’s heart is in the right place as they update an older film. Who will be number one?

10. Cape Fear
Martin Scorsese’s 1991 update of the 1962 thriller had several things going for it: Robert De Niro as the felon vowing to get revenge on the public defender (Nick Nolte) who failed him, and Juliette Lewis stealing scenes left and right as Nolte’s teenage daughter. The film is creepy, thrilling and pure Scorsese.

Robert De Niro in Cape Fear
9. 3:10 to Yuma
Two of our favorite actors, The Dark Knight Rises star Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, joined forces to bring the classic 1957 Western to life in 2007 and crafted an admirable remake that also upped the ante. Witnessing two actors in Bale and Crowe go tete-a-tete is worth the price of admission alone.

8. The Fly
David Cronenberg took 1958’s The Fly and turned it on its head. By utilizing the advanced special effects and make-up techniques of modern times, his turning Jeff Goldblum into an insect was far scarier and much more emotionally powerful than the first film.

7. Ocean’s Eleven
Steven Soderbergh did something that is almost impossible in Tinseltown. He improved on a classic. The 1960 heist film starring the Rat Pack, led by Frank Sinatra, is pure bliss. Yet, Soderbergh’s Ocean's 11, starring George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, has an even more compelling plot and its slickness sends the cool factor of the Vegas casino heist flick to a whole new level.

6. The Magnificent Seven
Akira Kurosawa set the standard for epics with his 1954 film The Seven Samurai. Transporting the action to the Old West of the United States, filmmaker John Sturges managed to capture the spirit of the Japanese classic, but also gave it new life and made it a companion classic to the original.

5. True Grit
What the Coen brothers did so right with their film -- about a young girl who hires a gunslinger to hunt down her parents’ killers -- is they went to the source material. The original film, starring John Wayne in the role that would earn him a Best Actor Oscar, played loosely with the bestselling book. Joel and Ethan Coen did fans of the book justice by bringing Charles Portis’ world to the screen as it should be seen.

Aiming Cogburn
4. The Thing
We’re talking John Carpenter’s 1982 remake of the 1951 film The Thing from Another World and not the flimsy 2011 remake of Carpenter’s The Thing. The 1982 flick starred Kurt Russell and was riddled with terror. It still shocks us with horror to this day.

3. Scarface
Two films that share DNA could actually not be more different than 1932’s Scarface and 1983’s Scarface. Where the focus on the original was gangsters, the latter film shined the spotlight on Miami, the cocaine epidemic and the influx of Cubans escaping Castro’s wrath, plus one Tony Montana, who extolled violence and trouble around every corner. Oliver Stone’s script is one of his best works, and director Brian De Palma was so stellar, he has been chasing Scarface’s success ever since.

2. The Ring
Based on the classic Ringu from Hideo Nakata, The Ring landed in English merely four years after the Japanese film that it is based upon. Naomi Watts is chilling and those who see either film can attest -- they’re both beyond solid and stellar in their ability to scare the living daylights out of audiences.

Quasi Father and Son
1. The Departed
Martin Scorsese scores again with another remake. Where his Cape Fear was stellar in its own right, his 2006 The Departed -- based on Alan Mak’s Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs -- was so incredible it had a date with destiny, winning Best Picture at the 2006 Oscars. With its powerful cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson) and killer soundtrack and direction, The Departed is simply the best remake… period. Want proof, check out these The Departed quotes for a reminder of what greatness reads like!

Prometheus Sequel Being Planned for 2014 or 2015: Will it Answer Our Questions?

$

Personally, I thought that a Prometheus sequel was planned, and executed, 33 years ago with a little film called Alien. But the ending to Prometheus clearly paved the way for a second film, and 20th Century Fox is now moving forward on its plans.

Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are already contracted for the Prometheus 2, though the film is seeking a new writer, as Damon Lindelof may not be available.

With some fans expressing disappointment in the myriad of unanswered questions posed by Prometheus (check out our Prometheus quotes page for some examples), plans of a sequel may either delight or enrage. Will all (or at least one of) the loose ends be tied up? Or will there simply be more unexplained developments piled onto an already convoluted storyline?

Prometheus certainly looked beautiful and presented some fascinating ideas. And the two best performances were given by Rapace and Fassbender, so the sequel has some great potential. The film is being planned for release some time in 2014 or 2015. Check back with Movie Fanatic for more updates as they happen.

Andy Samberg has left the Saturday Night Live building permanently and one of his first roles is starring opposite his good friend in Celeste and Jesse Forever. As the film’s co-writer and Samberg’s co-star told us in our Rashida Jones exclusive interview, “I got to watch him in real time be incredible and a total natural at something that he’s never been given the opportunity to do before.”

That is exactly why Samberg chose to star in the film -- a chance to spread his wings as an actor and play more to the dramatic, while still employing comedy.

“I didn’t know what to expect going in from myself ‘cause I hadn’t really done it before,” Samberg admitted. His chemistry with Jones is evident, even from the Celeste and Jesse Forever poster. “It was good circumstances for it. I’m good friends with Rashida who guided me through the process.”

Check out our exclusive video with Samberg above, where we even discuss the finer points of the hell that is putting together Ikea furniture.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days Exclusive: Author Jeff Kinney Talks Screen Success

Even though author Jeff Kinney is about to witness the third release of a film based on his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, he admitted to us in our exclusive interview that this one is different.

Zachary Gordon in Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days
“We think we’ve created a good piece of entertainment here and we hope people will come see the movie during the summer. That’s new for us because the last two years we’ve been in the early spring or March. This is the first time we’re staking a claim to a weekend in the summer and we’re really excited to see whether or not families will go see a Wimpy Kid movie during the dog days,” Kinney said of Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.

The title is apt and it could not be more of a perfect time to release the film, especially considering the Dog Days subtitle of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid moniker.

“I think it worked really well. I think it’s very apropos to have this movie which is the summer doldrums in a way coming out right in the middle of them. I think that it’s nice,” Kinney said.

“A lot of people who I’ve talked to that have seen early trailers of the movie say it reminds them of what it was like to be a kid and to experience that -- the town pool, the boardwalk and things like that. So I think that people are going to see a little bit of their own childhoods in this movie.”

He clearly doesn’t get as nervous for a film’s release as he did the first time. “I think when the first movie came out everybody was so nervous because we didn’t know. We felt like it was a simple pass/fail. We didn’t know how it would do, if people had an appetite for this kind of an experience,” he reported. “Now, we have a better sense of how things will play out.”

Kinney recalled for us what it was like the first time he saw his literary and artistic incarnations come to life with real live actors for the silver screen in 2010.

“I think that for me it was kind of a progressive experience because I had been on set for about half of the filming, so I got to see some dailies and I got to see the actors actually being filmed in the moment,” the author said.

Jeff Kinney Photo
“It’s really neat to see the characters really and truly on the big screen. It really brought it to life in a different way than anything I could have imagined.”

One of the keys to the cinematic success of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Kinney believes, is the impeccable casting.

“I think that the casting is the best part of the movies. I really can’t believe how… I would call it luck except that I’ve come to appreciate how much skill is involved in picking a cast of characters like this. It’s such a giant ensemble cast and you don’t see that in many movies, so I think it’s a privilege to have my characters portrayed by these actors,” he said.

When he first created the Wimpy Kid character, he felt he had crafted someone kids of all ages could relate to. “Most of the time in children’s literature, the main character is a kid who really acts like a miniature adult,” he said.

“I wanted to create a character who is a little bit less hero-like and who didn’t always do the right thing, because I think that kids will be able to see themselves in the characters in these books if I did that.”

The original inspiration for the Wimpy Kid series arose out of what Kinney first saw as a career swing and miss. “My writing these books was a result of my failure to become a newspaper cartoonist,” Kinney said.

Zachary Gordon and Steve Zahn in Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days
“That had been the dream for me -- to break into the comics in the newspaper. And after a few years of getting rejection letters and no real hope of getting syndicated, I decided to take a different tack and try to create a book that had comics as a sort of Trojan horse. I’ve had some twists and turns along the way but now I feel like I’m a real cartoonist.”

As he continues the series, Kinney does not let the success of films such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days influence future installments of his literary series.

“My process really is the same. I don’t let the movies influence my writing,” he said. “But I do sometimes allow myself to imagine what it would be like to film a particular scene, especially when I’m writing about set pieces.”

Total Recall star Jessica Biel is talking exclusively in our video interview about her best day on the set, why director Len Wiseman is simply the best and admits that "funnest" is one of her favorite words!

Biel is truly showing her range of late and keeping it fresh is clearly imperative for the starlet. In the last few years, Biel has been seen in the period piece Easy Virtue, the action film The A-Team and the ensemble comedy New Year’s Eve.

"Now that I feel like I’m a little bit older and I know what I want to do with my career, I want it to be diverse,” Biel admitted. “I don’t want to be stuck somewhere where I’m seen as unable to play someone who lived in another era or not do an action movie. I want to do everything.”

She’s back to action with the Colin Farrell-starring remake of Total Recall before she will be seen as Psycho star Vera Miles in the upcoming Anthony Hopkins-starring biopic, Hitchcock. Variety is indeed the spice of life for an actress.

Total Recall Review: Riveting Remake

$
0
0

Remakes can be a difficult endeavor. Total Recall circa 1990 -- although not a film of the Oscar award-winning variety -- has a passionate fan base that has only swelled over the years. Filmmaker Len Wiseman showed his smartness by doing two things with his 2012 Total Recall.

Colin Farrell Total Recall
Wiseman removed Mars from the equation, except for a throw-away quip by Colin Farrell, our newest incarnation of Douglas Quaid and his recently discovered rebel leader Hauser alter-ego. Also, Wiseman rid the story of its campy sci-fi element that Paul Verhoeven put in overdrive in the first film. Even in the Total Recall poster... we can tell this is a stripped down version. Our new Total Recall is a pure sci-fi action, suspense fest that spends much of the movie in fifth gear going 90 miles per hour.

Farrell is magnificent. Having the audience with the actor as he learns his own backstory is a thrilling study in the Irish actor’s talent. Effortlessly balancing the razor thin line between action hero and simple man, in Wiseman’s Total Recall, the hero’s journey could easily be our own.

Although the 1990 film was a joyride beyond belief, one never could identify with Schwarzenegger as an everyman. It’s not a strike against his stellar performance. That sentiment merely stems from the fact that at that time, no matter what he did, it was completely believable that that “guy” could kill on a moment's notice.

Total Recall, circa 2012, allows an identification factor with its hero that is priceless. One minute he is fending off bad guys in ways that would make James Bond weak in the knees and the next… he is clueless as to why he is even in this situation. It could not be more identifiable.

Farrell’s Quaid is not satisfied with his life. There’s got to be more. Tirelessly working in a factory for the betterment of a society that is radically split by rich and poor, spurns him to visit a facility that gives you memories of your wildest fantasy -- Rekall.

The supporting cast does not disappoint. Kate Beckinsale owns the Sharon Stone role from the original. When Farrell’s character goes to Rekall and his old life is triggered, she effortlessly switches on a dime from doting wife to wicked villainess.

Jessica Biel Total Recall
Jessica Biel surprises in the role as the rebel fighter with an obvious previous romantic relationship with Hauser. She is equally stoic, emotive and kick-ass. Bryan Cranston is the head baddie, a ruler of the futuristic world that is left after a chemical weapon war. He not only rules with an iron fist, but with ideological indifference to what’s right and wrong. For him, survival simply means remaining in control.

Farrell’s Hauser and Cranston’s Cohaagen are clearly on a collision course. In Wiseman’s mind-blowing futuristic world, that journey lies at the heart of why our Total Recall review puts the film just off the top movie remakes of all-time, firmly at number eleven on our Top 10 Remakes.

Ghostbusters 3 is happening. But it will be happening sans Bill Murray.

In an interview with Metro, Dan Aykroyd confirmed that Murray will not be returning for the long-awaited Ghostbusters threequel. He did say, however, that he is very excited about the direction of the new script, and that the movie will see them "passing the torch to the next generation."

You know what that means: Wild speculation about who could be the new Ghostbusters! Maybe Jonah Hill? Jason Schwartzman? Aziz Ansari? Seth Rogen? I'm just tossing some names out there. Let us know who you'd like to see the ghost-fighting torch passed to in the comments section below!

While the news about Murray, who recently appeared in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, is disappointing, it sounds like Ghostbusters 3 does have potential. Aykroyd, meanwhile, will appear in the upcoming comedy The Campaign.

Wreck-It Ralph Exclusive: Zach Parrish Takes Us Inside Disney Animation

$

Zach Parrish, Supervising Animator on Wreck-It Ralph, admits that his job on this film was something he was born to do. As a lifelong video game fan and an individual obsessed with Disney animation, his work on a film with a video game villain named Ralph (John C. Reilly) as its main character... is clearly a match made in heaven.

Wreck-It Ralph Picture
“It was something that I always had an interest in. I’ve always had an interest in animation, specifically Disney animation. And, I was a video game nut,” Parrish said in our exclusive interview.

When asked what his ten-year-old self would think of what he has been doing for the last 18 months on Wreck-It Ralph, he wavers. “The logical ten-year-old me would say that makes sense,” he said and laughed. “The other half of me would say, ‘Get out of town.’”

Movie Fanatic is in Burbank at Walt Disney Animation Studios and we’ve been shown almost 25 minutes of the upcoming animated film that explores what would happen to an 8-bit video game villain, who after thirty years wondered if there was more to life.

As shown in the recently debuted Wreck-It Ralph trailer, the adventure takes him out of his Fix-It Felix, Jr. game where he is the bad guy and shows his journey to become the hero. He ventures into two very different worlds at the arcade where he’s existed for decades: Hero’s Duty, a first-person shooter war game, and a Mario Cart meets Candy Land game called Sugar Rush.

Parrish admitted that having three such varied animation styles was a welcome challenge for the animation supervisor. “I liked that it kept me on my toes. I had to develop different bags of tricks,” he said. “To be able to be so versatile and keep yourself fresh is great in my line of work.”

The Disney animation department spent tens of thousands of hours (and are still at it!) trying to nail down the intricacies of the different video game worlds and making them feel cohesive, yet still 100-percent different from one another.

“There are a lot of rules we had to break from our traditional sense in order to make this film. There was some dipping into really old school Disney and pulling in a lot of different references,” Parrish said.

“It was difficult to flip your mind constantly from shot to shot. It was very specific on this, whereas other films have one style for the whole film.”

When asked which of the three worlds was the most enjoyable to work on, Parrish said it feels like choosing a favorite child.

Sugar Rush from Wreck-It Ralph
“I worked a lot on King Candy, I was the lead on that character in the Sugar Rush game, which is super fun because he’s a really broad character and comes from a lot of different angles. He has a lot of that old school 2D mentality to his design and animation,” Parrish said.

But, if he had to choose one aspect of the Wreck-It Ralph world, it wasn’t a locale so much as a relationship.

“I really enjoyed the emotional stuff between Ralph and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman, whom Ralph meets in Sugar Rush) because of how much heart and strength it had to it -- and how pivotal it was to the show. This movie has a lot of comedy, but for me it’s that emotional core that carries it.”

Working on the same scenes over and over could be tiresome, but hearing his lead actors perform their parts was a continual joy and inspiration.

“It’s relieving in that the actors do so much of the work for you in a sense. You know exactly how to draw them by their performance,” Parrish said.

In the scenes we saw, Silverman blew us away with her uncanny range. “Watching her as an actress is such a joy. It was amazing -- the variety that she has, from ridiculous comedy to that deep sentimental area to really sweet moments. She’s all over the place and never misses. All of the voices in Wreck-It Ralph have just nailed it. You get invigorated every time you do a scene with that kind of casting.”

While touring the Disney Animation Studio offices, one thing struck Movie Fanatic: A framed poster with the multitude of incarnations that the character drawing of Ralph went through (photo below).

Wreck-It Ralph Evolution
“Because of the many different directions this story could go, the ever-evolving story, we went through a lot of designs. Ralph had more of an opportunity to change completely in form and shape and color because he could be anything. We’re creating an original character from an original game,” Parrish said.

“Whereas Rapunzel, she’s going to be a girl, she’s going to have long, blond hair, Ralph could be absolutely anything. It was an organic path and once they started getting close… you just felt it.”

Above all else, Parrish and his team are tickled pink at finally being able to show off part of their labor of love to Movie Fanatic. “It’s even more rewarding when it is something we’re so proud of as well,” he said. “It’s awesome to have other people sharing the excitement that I’ve had for such a long time.”

Look for Wreck-It Ralph when it lands in theaters in November and more from Movie Fanatic and our trip to Disney Animation coming soon.

Bryan Cranston dives into his roles, regardless of whether he’s playing a meth creator in his Emmy-winning Breaking Bad or Cohaagen, the leader of what’s left of the world in director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall.

Cranston tells Movie Fanatic, in our exclusive video interview, what it was about Cohaagen that he most wanted to tackle this guy and why he wanted to be a part of the remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger 1990 classic. “The best part of playing him was the position that he was exulted to,” Cranston said.

“That sense of the emperor and everyone kowtowing to my whim… and holding court. In the scenes, I run the show. I scold some people and I kill others! It’s nice to have the power.”

As we state in our Total Recall review, this is one remake that gets it right and much of the props deserve to be laid at Cranston’s feet.

The Internship is set to be released some time in 2013.

Celeste and Jesse Forever Review: Rom-Com Revolution?

$
0
0

Romantic comedy fans… Celeste and Jesse Forever is a revelation. The film, from writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, is unlike any rom-com seen of late. For a genre in desperate need of a shot in the creative arm, their film is a welcome arrival.

Andy Samberg and Rashida Jones in Celeste and Jesse Forever
Jones stars as Celeste while Andy Samberg is Jesse, and the two make movie magic together as a couple who met in high school, married after college and have come to believe that they are better off as friends than as a romantic duo.

How exactly does that work? And thus we have the modus operandi, hinted at so effectively in the Celeste and Jesse Forever movie poster. The film is a romantic comedy where the romance happened before the first scenes are shown.

Celeste and Jesse’s friends think it’s weird that the former couple are such best friends. And as an audience member, initially, it appears they are right. But, as the film unfolds, you see that there is a level of caring between these two people that transcends romantic love. Soon though, there are challenges that threaten Jesse and Celeste’s friendly staying power.

Jones and Samberg are a perfect pair. Not only do they effectively navigate the relationship landmines set up by the film’s premise with precision, but they possess a priceless chemistry.

Samberg shows, in one of his first post-Saturday Night Live roles, how truly talented he is as an actor. Sure, he’s funny in Celeste and Jesse Forever, but his dramatic chops are what are truly on display here. The actor runs the gamut through a myriad of emotions that fill his Jesse with color and nuance.

Proving she’s a multi-talented force, Jones delivers her usual pitch-perfect performance, but her co-screenwriting skills are what truly impress.

Our review would not be complete without highlighting that McCormack and the Parks and Recreation star have weaved a web that is rare in romantic comedies of late. They manage to craft a story that keeps audiences wondering: Where is this going? How will the story conclude? With great joy, we can report that it remains a mystery until the film’s final moments. Can you imagine a rom-com where the ending wasn’t advertised? Kudos to the screenwriters for having a trait that is sorely lacking in Hollywood lately: Originality.
