Warm Bodies: Dave Franco on Unique Zombie Tale

Dave Franco plays a huge part in the plot of Warm Bodies. Although he may lose the girl (Teresa Palmer) to a zombie, it is through his characterization that our zombie named "R" is able to find common ground with Palmer's Julie. We met Franco for an exclusive video interview where the actor was just a tad on the excited side to join the legacy of zombie movies that continues with his that is so different, as eloquently teased in this Warm Bodies trailer.

"On paper, people are going to see it as another zombie movie. But, it's got a fresh tone. it's a zombie movie, but you're laughing with it. It's self aware. It's sweet too," Franco said. What are his favorites? "My top two are 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead."

Franco has been on quite a run of late, with his turns in films as different as 21 Jump Street, Greenberg and Fright Night. The actor, who is also quite an accomplished writer, believes that working across genres keeps him inspired. "I do want to do a little bit of everything," Franco said.

As a writer, Franco also tells us what he looks for in a script for him to want to be involved. "You take a movie like this, where zombies exist, even within that world, everything has to feel real and logical," Franco admitted. "I look for the logic in stories."

Phil: Hi, thanks for watching.
Ned: Hey now, don't you tell me you don't remember me 'cause I sure as heckfire remember you!
Phil: Not a chance.
Ned: Ned... Ryerson!

Phil: A gust of wind.
[a gust of wind blows]
Phil: A dog barks.
[a dog barks in the distance]
Phil: Cue the truck.
[an armored truck drives up]
Phil: Exit Herman; walk out into the bank.
[Herman gets out of armored truck and walks into the bank]

Hey Phil, if we wanted to hit mailboxes we could let Ralph drive.

Gus

Phil: What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?
Ralph: That about sums it up for me.

Just put that anywhere, pal! Yeah! Good save!

Super Bowl Trailers: Which Scored a Touchdown?

Super Bowl trailers were off a bit this year in terms of volume, but not quality. Last year saw a dozen different flicks hawking their potential during the big game. This year, we had seven... but what a set it was! We want to know which of the sizzling seven got you going by voting in the latest Movie Fanatic poll.

Chris Pine Star Trek Into Darkness

There was the Star Trek: Into Darkness Super Bowl trailer that did nothing but send the already high anticipation of fans everywhere through the roof. We can gather even more how Benedict Cumberbatch fits into the film... but much mystery still remains.

Then, the World War Z Super Bowl spot starring Brad Pitt wowed as audiences finally saw more into the world that first terrified us on the pages of Max Brooks' book.

Was your favorite the Oz: The Great and Powerful Super Bowl big game trailer that continued to give us great wonder as to what on earth this film could be? From every single sneak peek we've had, our fascination with this new world of Oz compels further.

One of the most surprising teasers to air during the big game that saw the Baltimore Ravens emerge champs was the Fast and Furious 6 Super Bowl trailer that showed why the franchise was so invigorated by the last installment: The addition of Dwayne Johnson. This time out, it appears our new franchise favorite is teaming up with the racing crew. Color us intrigued...

Honestly, the Iron Man 3 Super Bowl trailer had us vexed. It was not so much of a trailer as a clip that truly left us hanging. Sure, that was the point of the Marvel Studios spot. Of all the Super Sunday teasers, Movie Fanatic has to give it to the filmmakers behind Iron Man 3 for putting its movie out there, based solely on one scene. And what a scene it was... Iron Man rescuing people falling from a disabled Air Force One! Wow.

Iron Man 3 Extremis Still

Before the game even began, what could be described as the most thrilling trailer aired: The Lone Ranger Super Bowl trailer. Tell me that ending on the top of the train isn't enough to get you in the seats this summer?

Lastly, The Rock went two-for-two with his second spot to air in front of the biggest TV audience of the year. The Snitch Super Bowl spot set the stage for the based on a true story action flick that shows how far a father will go to protect his son.

Tina Fey Eyes Pitch Perfect Director's Next Film

Until last year, Jason Moore was a veteran director of stage Musicals, putting on everything from Les Miserables toAvenue Q. Then, last September, Moore made a seamless transition into film with the Musical Comedy Pitch Perfect (see how well he did at our Pitch Perfect quotes page).

Now, he's ditching the "musical" part, as Moore is set to direct the comedy The Nest, written by long-time SNL writer Paula Pell. And who is eyeing the starring role in the new film? None other than the Reigning Queen of Comedy, Tina Fey (who is also producing).

Funny Tina Fey

The film follows two sisters who spend one final weekend in their childhood home before it gets sold. So if Fey finalizes the roll, all eyes will be on how will play alongside her (Amy Poehler? Elizabeth Banks? Kristen Wiig? Melissa McCarthy? Rebel Wilson? Anyone else with hilarious Bridesmaids quotes?).

Fey is set to co-star in The Muppets...Again, which begins production shortly.

Side Effects: Cast Chats Soderbergh Swan Song

$

The cast of Side Effects sits down with Movie Fanatic to talk about the thriller from the mind of screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and director Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, The Informant). Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta Jones, Rooney Mara and Jude Law all star in the psychological drama that will have you guessing until the final moments of the film.

Rooney Mara Channing Tatum Side Effects

One has to start any chat with this cast with Tatum and the phenomenal 13 months he has had dating back to Haywire in January 2012 through Side Effects, which opens Friday, February 8. “I’ve been lucky,” Tatum said.

In between those Steven Soderbergh-directed bookends, Tatum starred in Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street, The Vow and 10 Years. “We worked so hard on every single one and you don’t know which ones are gonna work and which ones aren’t. I’ve gotten to work with some really amazingly talented people and that has helped the ones that worked work. You gotta keep doing the stories you love and the characters you love and are drawn to.”

There is much to be blissful about with this film, as teased in the Side Effects trailer. Zeta Jones found it difficult to talk about a film that has so many thrilling plot pivots. "This is probably the hardest movie to discuss to people because any given moment we could realize the wonder plot and the twists and turns that occur throughout the movie,” she admitted.

But she felt proud of one fact, she portrays a doctor -- a role that she felt would impress her parents.

“For me playing a doctor, let’s just put it that I try and be as professional on the outset as one would think all good doctors are -- but my character lies much deeper. The relationship that lies between Jude and myself and Rooney and myself runs much deeper than your first impression of me as a doctor would be," Jones said.

"I’m thrilled that Steven cast me as a doctor because I never went to college and I always wanted an MD after my name. I’m really quite flattered that you fulfilled my mother’s dream.”

Law, who plays a psychiatrist in the middle of the Mara mystery, emerged with a greater appreciation for what these individuals do. “Obviously a lot of the discussion around this film is around the abuse of medicine and perhaps using medicine, of relying on medicine for the wrong reasons,” Law said. “Of course, medicine is also used for an awful lot of good reasons too. I left this job feeling really respectful of psychiatry as a profession.”

Mara, the subject of many onscreen psychological evaluations and the one who reels from the Side Effects of the drugs she’s prescribed, shared her co-star's feelings. “I think I’ve always had a respect for psychiatry as a profession. Certainly this movie furthers that,” Mara said.

Although given the vast moral compass of the professionals in Side Effects, her opinion on docs would not be shaped by those in Soderbergh’s picture. "I don’t know if the characters in the film left me with more faith in psychiatry but I’m glad Jude feels that way,” she said, laughing.

Jude Law Catherine Zeta Jones Side Effects

Side Effects is also quite timely, the cast asserted. Whether American or British, each member of the film's ensemble found it relevant to our current discussion of mental health. Our Movie Fanatic Side Effects exclusive trailer highlights that fact.

“There was this British stiff upper lip where psychotherapy and depression and basically your emotions were quashed and it became that British stiff upper lip. Don’t put your dirty laundry out. Who cares about how you feel? You’re sad, buck up, you’ll be fine tomorrow,” Jones said.

“Now, it’s starting to come up much more in the open and people are starting to talk much more on television about issues. I think in America it has this much more public feel. Maybe it’s just easier speaking about it which I think is very good.”

Law also saw it tackling the broader issue of the over-prescribing of drugs in society as a whole. “I think also if you look at the theme of our general reliance on prescription pills, I think that’s quite universal actually,” Law said. “Whether it’s something that’s discussed or not discussed, I think it’s a definite common theme to the story in the modern age which most people would recognize.”

Jones believes regardless of what side of the pond you live on, we’re all victims to a quick fix. “Whether it’s texting or you want this quick or it’s a movie you press a button and it’s on, culturally, we’ve become everything instantaneously,” Jones added.

“I think with prescription medicine it’s kind of the same thing. If there’s one thing you can take that’s gonna make all this go away then I’ll try it. It’s become a cumulative that comes from a culture of quick-fixes.”

Much of the cast has worked with the astounding Side Effects director before, but not Mara. She felt like the new kid on the block. “My first day, I was definitely kind of nervous but they were all pretty nice so it made it pretty easy,” Mara said.

“I just keep coming back because Steven’s so pretty and beautiful and he gives great massages on set. That’s really it and I don’t really love anything else about him,” Tatum added as everyone laughed. In fact, it appears that Tatum has his own reasons why he hopes Soderbergh would not retire after Side Effects. “I wish he would just keep making movies so I can keep getting those massages.”

“He rubbed my feet when I was pregnant in Traffic and that’s the only reason why I keep coming back. He looked after a pregnant woman so well and I just knew I’d be in good hands,” Jones added.

Mara, wanting to turn serious for a moment, talked about what it meant to her to star in a Steven Soderbergh movie.

Rooney Mara Side Effects

“I really wanted to work with Steven for a while. I can’t remember why I wanted to now that I have," she said and laughed. "I read the script and I just loved it. I thought it was really smart and interesting and like Jude said that really doesn’t happen that often. The cast that he had attached to it, like they said, it was kind of a no-brainer."

Every film she makes alters and influences her, and Side Effects was no different. Simply looking at this Side Effects clip, one can see why.

“I think every job that you do changes or affects you in some way. I certainly went into it thinking I knew a lot about depression and when I started researching it, I realized I didn’t know a lot about depression. Certainly that part of it changed me. I feel like I have a lot more compassion now for depression," Mara said.

"There’s a lot of things that we were able to do that were really eye opening.”

Lastly, since Mara has appeared in mostly dark fare -- including most recently The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -- we wondered if there would be a lighter movie in her future. “I don’t see a rom-com in my future -- but never say never,” Mara admitted. “I’m just not funny. I think you’d be really mad or disappointed."

Identity Thief: Jason Bateman & Melissa McCarthy Trade Barbs

$

When Jason Bateman saw Melissa McCarthy dishing those priceless Bridesmaids quotes, he knew his latest flick -- Identity Thief -- had to change. The film was about a man (Bateman) who has his identity stolen and life practically ruined by a con artist -- a role originally written for a man.

Jason Bateman Melissa McCarthy in Identity Thief

"I went to the premiere of Bridesmaids and the following morning I called Universal and said, 'I’d really like to work with this woman. Can we please change the thief from a guy to a girl and make it Melissa?' They could not have liked the idea better," Bateman said as the duo sat down with Movie Fanatic.

McCarthy had yet to become America's newest sweetheart, so Bateman -- also a producer on the film -- felt confident they could cast her. "Fortunately this was the Bridesmaids premiere so it was not yet in America’s hands so we still had a chance for her. I took her out to a quick meal and had her sign something while she was passed out from the booze [laughs]."

We met the stars, who show off their high humor quotient in the Identity Thief trailer, for a chat about their priceless comic chemistry and much more.

Movie Fanatic: You two were so fabulous together...

Jason Bateman: I'm a little bit better, right? Thank you!

Movie Fanatic: [Laughs] Yeah, sure. You’ve both done some crazy things in the name of comedy. Anything that is too much?

Jason Bateman: She’ll shit in a sink for a laugh.

Melissa McCarthy: I was ill [laughs]! I don’t know, for me so long as it makes sense for the character on the worst day and the most extreme circumstance, I like to see how far you can push it. But it’s not funny anymore if it doesn’t make sense. I don’t like to do anything that’s mean spirited. I don’t find it funny. I’d rather be the jackass than make fun of somebody else. It feels too cheap and easy.

Jason Bateman: Well said, I second that.

Movie Fanatic: Jason, Identity Thief director Seth Gordon told us you’re the best straight man in the business…

Jason Bateman: Well they don’t have those takes in the movie and there were a lot of them where I broke up. There were only a few where I kept a straight face and you only need one. She makes it very difficult because she does it in a way that’s different on ever single take, so even if you know what’s coming -- it’s gonna be a little bit different.

Movie Fanatic: You two spent a lot of time together cramped in a car with cameras in there. Did it ever get too much?

Melissa McCarthy: The car scenes were really my favorite. You’re confined in this car and a lot of times you’re locked in on both sides because they have camera rigs so you literally can’t get out even if you wanted to. So you get cabin fever and you get punchy and sitting next to that (points to Jason) for so long of a time -- I had to do a lot of weird stuff like stare at his forehead instead of his eyes because I couldn’t keep it together. But, those are my favorite things because you start to go a little loopy.

Melissa McCarthy Jason Bateman Identity Thief

Movie Fanatic: Melissa, as famously shown off in the second Identity Thief movietrailer, you are pretty good at hitting a guy in the throat to knock him off his feet. If you had to defend yourself would you go for the punch to the neck?

Melissa McCarthy: I believe I would do a sharp kick to the balls and when they drop to a lower height then I’d also get the throat. I’d combine them [laughs]!

Movie Fanatic: How do you get in the mindset to do such physical comedy? Melissa, did you ever get hurt?

Melissa McCarthy: I got hurt a lot and I’m apparently an idiot. After the movie I was like, "I’m not very bright." There was that stunt woman there for so much of this. I think I just get really excited to do it and I don’t think about doing it 42 times. I think, "I’ll fall down the stairs!"

Jason Bateman: Especially you getting hit by that car. That would have been an easy one to give to the stunt woman for like an extra 20 bucks or something...

Melissa McCarthy: It's actually 26 dollars.

Movie Fanatic: Now Jason, how on earth do you ready to physically attack this beautiful lady?

Jason Bateman: She pisses you off and you go. This is what happens...

Melissa McCarthy: He had no problem, let’s start there.

Jason Bateman: It was not difficult. She starts running that thing. I saw the guitar there when we were rehearsing and we were trying to figure out a way to stop her from leaving because we didn’t want to do the tackling of her yet and I said, “What if I take her off her feet with this guitar?”

Melissa McCarthy: I think what he said was, “What if I hit her in the face with this guitar?” Kind of laughing and I was like, “We’re kidding right?” But Seth (Gordon, director) seemed to keep laughing and that made me nervous [laughs]. Then you started fiddling with the guitar and I thought, “Oh God, I’m gonna get hit in the face with the guitar.”

Jason Bateman: I was taking practice swings with it. We built a helmet that could fit underneath the stunt woman’s wig so she could have a good portion of her face protected and a little of her shoulder and we spent the night building that, well not we, I of course was sleeping comfortably in a bed.

Melissa McCarthy Identity Thief

Movie Fanatic: I heard that you actually throw a Panini maker at her.

Jason Bateman: That was a mistake -- regrettable.

Melissa McCarthy: I don’t know about that. There were about 14 fake Panini machines that way about a quarter of an ounce because they’re foam and one real one that weighs about 32 pounds...

Jason Bateman: It was a little bit shinier...like a fish.

Melissa McCarthy: He’s like a raccoon just goes for the shiny one. The first time we did that run to the door, he picked up the real one and let that thing fly towards my head...

Jason Bateman: Missed her...

Melissa McCarthy: And he was like, “I didn’t know that it wasn’t a fake one.” There was like a 32-pound difference!

Jason Bateman: Well I didn’t know that there were any light ones. I thought they were all real. I thought clearly someone’s checked with Melissa on this.

Melissa McCarthy: It was a dicey shoot.

Movie Fanatic: Melissa your character in this does some horrible things and probably ruins some lives but we’ll pulling for you all the way. How do you straddle that line and make us cheer for you when you’re kind of an unlikable character.

Melissa McCarthy: I think that’s a testament to the good script and Craig Mazin writing a fully developed person. I wanted to make sure she wasn’t just a one-dimensional, mustache-twirling villain. I love the thought of someone doing criminal acts but not doing them to be menacing. She does them because she’s lonely and doesn’t have anyone. She kind of steals identities so she can go out to a store and pretend to have these lives. Pretend to have a husband. Pretend to have a family. Pretend to be engaged. She’s not even stealing from people to be menacing. She’s just lonely.

Yesterday Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that they would be producing Star Wars stand-alone films to go along with the main series. Rumor had it that Yoda would be the first character to get a stand-alone.

But when we asked you who should get a Star-Wars stand-alone, your answer was clear: Han Solo and Boba Fett! Well, it looks like Disney knows their audience pretty well.

Harrison Ford in Star Wars

EW is reporting that writers Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are working on a script for a Han Solo origin story, and a bounty-hunting tale with Boba Fett as the main character.

Star Wars Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams and is expected to be released some time in 2015. There is no expected release date on the stand-alones, though they will likely come after Episode VII.

The Han Solo Movie would take place some time between episodes III and IV, and would require a new actor to play young Han. Who do you think could pull it off? Let us know in the comments section below!
