Trance Review: Mind-Blowing Mayhem

$

0

Trance director Danny Boyle is fond of films that truly get inside the heads of his characters. Whether it Dev Patel’s Slumdog Millionaire -- where the audience learns his journey to game show titan through his memories -- or in 127 Hours where James Franco is stuck with his arm under a boulder, dozens of miles from civilization and much of the story is told through his thoughts.

James McAvoy Trance

What better challenge for the cerebral director than to tell a story of a person who cannot remember a thing about a pivotal point in the plot?

As previewed in the Trance trailer, the story follows James McAvoy’s London auctioneer, Simon. He is a mild-mannered chap who is quite good at his job and by all appearances, living the life he dreams of. During the auction of a $25 million painting, robbers strike and Simon gets hit in the head. He awakes in a hospital with no memory of what happened.

Vincent Cassel is Franck, the leader of the heist crew. When Simon returns home from the hospital, we learn that Franck is none too pleased with him. Seems that Simon stashed the painting during the robbery away from the crooks and Franck wants to know where it is. The only problem, Simon’s amnesia is preventing him from remembering anything.

When beat-downs don’t work, they turn to a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) in hopes of unlocking the mystery that is lost inside Simon’s brain.

Boyle masterfully weaves suspense and psychological drama, all within the firm confines of a heist film. Yet, it is still classic Boyle brilliance as the filmmaker manages to keep his story firmly inside the head of his lead… even if he doesn’t remember the details.

McAvoy could not be a better choice as he masterfully weaves between clueless and cunning. See, when his memories start coming back… he sees a way to benefit from the situation. How does Franck know what he remembers… and when?!

Rosario Dawson Trance

Dawson is subtle, yet powerful in the role of the hypnotist who may have her own agenda in this heist. And Cassel (Black Swan) yet again proves that the French actor has something special to bring to any film as the frustrated, brutal and bodacious ring leader.

Our Trance review states that the film is, at its heart, a true triumph of collaboration between Boyle and his lead, McAvoy. Much as he achieved with Patel in Slumdog Millionaire and Franco in 127 Hours, the pairing of director and star is always an important one. With Boyle and his leads, proved true yet again in the terrific Trance, there are few that do it better.

Jurassic Park 3D Review: Better Than Ever

Jurassic Park 3D is honestly how the movie should be seen. It’s stunning how brilliant the conversion of the masterpiece to three dimensions is for an audience who has placed the film among the Top 10 Steven Spielberg movies. It’s as if the filmmaker shot the movie, knowing that someday the technology would exist to bring his dino terror ride to the format custom made for his movie.

Jurassic Park 3D Still

By now, we all know the story of Jurassic Park. Millions of you have seen it, but never like it is being presented. And might Movie Fanatic recommend witnessing the 3D conversion of an American classic in the IMAX format? We witnessed it that way and it was among the most thrilling and enjoyable cinematic experiences at the movies in a long, long time.

The other thing that stands out with the Jurassic Park 3D upgrade, is how astoundingly well the story and the film itself holds up to the test of time. There is nothing in the subject matter or what is seen on screen that feels dated. If anything, the film is timelier than ever. As science fiction becomes science reality, Spielberg expertly gives us a cinematic warning sign of what to avoid.

The performances by leads Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough ground the fantastical film in real human emotions. Spielberg magically strikes a balance between the horrors of dinosaurs gone crazy while incorporating his favorite themes of family and legacy.

Sam Neill Jurassic Park 3D

With this particular 3D re-release, we might see something truly special. Whereas the three-dimensional returns of Top Gun and others were met with a collective sigh by the audience, Jurassic Park could easily become a blockbuster (again).

The film is a benchmark for many movie fans. And there is something truly special about witnessing it on the big screen. Our Jurassic Park 3D review reports this is a perfect storm of audience nostalgia, cinematic technological advances and a story that is as compelling as it was decades ago.

Hercules 3D Has Its Lead: Kellan Lutz to Star

A lot of well-known actors have taken on the role of the Greek God Hurcules. Arnold SChwarzenegger and Lou Ferigno have portrayed him in film, and Ryan Gosling (Only God Forgives) even played him in the late-90's Fox Kids TV show, Young Hercules.

Now, two competing Hercules movies are in the works. The first, to be directed by Brett Ratner, will have Dwayne Johnson (Pain and Gain) as the Son of Zeus. But today, Hercules 3D cast its lead by signing Kellan Lutz.

Emmett Breaking Dawn Part 2

Lutz is no stranger to Greek Gods, having portrayed Poseidon in the 2011 fantasy film, Immortals, along with Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Luke Evans, and Frida Pinto.

Renny Harlin will direct the film, with a script by Sean Hood and Hanna Weg. Hercules 3D is being targeted for a March 2014 release.

Iron Man 3 Clip: Holiday Greeting for Mandarin

Up until this point, it has only been the Iron Man 3 trailer that has clued us into the world of Tony Stark and what's in store for him in the third film in the Iron Man series. Now, Disney and Marvel have released the film's first clip and with the film's May 3 release date fast approaching, it could not have arrived sooner!

Fresh off our reveal this morning of the Iron Man 3 international trailer, this clip gives a truly solid look into a scene in its entirety.

Judging by what we know from the film thus far, the clip features Stark addressing reporters as he essentially is delivering a message to the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) and calls him a coward. Heck, he even gives his home address and invites the evildoer to come and confront him like a "man."

We all know what happens next... Stark's house is blown to bits!

The Company You Keep Review: Arrested Development

$

Robert Redford is not only back behind the camera, but in front of it too in The Company You Keep. For his story of modern justice finding a group of violent anti-war radicals from the 1960s, Redford has assembled a Robert Altman-type cast that runs the gamut from young and talented (Shia LaBeouf) to gruff veteran (Nick Nolte).

Robert Redford Stars in The Company You Keep

As shown in The Company You Keep trailer, the film begins with Susan Sarandon leaving her home to go get some gasoline. As soon as she turns off the car, FBI agents surround her and take her into custody. That moment sets off a chain reaction that will ensnare all of our film’s characters in ways that their lives will never be the same.

Redford is a small upstate New York attorney who is approached by a friend of Sarandon’s to represent her. He refuses, saying she would be better served by someone more qualified. We soon find out why he doesn’t want to represent her. He too has been in hiding for a bank robbery committed during the 1960s… all in the name of stopping the Vietnam War.

Meanwhile, LaBeouf plays an Albany newspaper reporter who believes there is something a little off by the arrest of this housewife beyond what the police are saying. When he digs further, he stumbles on the truth and his expose will make it impossible for anyone involved in that fateful robbery from back in the day to stay hidden.

As brilliantly paired in The Company You Keep poster, Redford and LaBeouf are terrific in their tit-for-tat performance that slowly builds towards a boil throughout the film. It is because of LaBeouf’s reporting that Redford must head out on the run and leave his daughter with his brother (Chris Cooper), who never supported his brother’s actions… but cannot turn his back on family.

Across the country, we meet Sam Elliott and Julie Christie. The couple are connected, but we’re not sure how until it is revealed in an explosive finale.

You see, that’s why our The Company You Keep review can recommend the film. There are so many terrific performances turned in by some of the greatest actors working today and yesterday. Not to be left out, Stanley Tucci rivets as LaBeouf’s boss. Richard Jenkins has a small role as a former comrade of Redford’s and Brit Marling continues to dazzle in her young career as a love interest for LaBeouf.

The Company You Keep Shia LaBeouf

Oh, and then there are three small roles that remind us of that iconic phrase about the fact that there are no small roles, only small actors. Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard and Brendan Gleeson round out this superstar cast. That is, first and foremost, the reason to see The Company You Keep.

The plot is fascinating, albeit a bit bumpy, in its shining a spotlight on an era of U.S. history that should not be forgotten. Radicalism in America is nothing new, but with the aversion to the Vietnam War, some took it too far, and how we handle that is the crux of the debate at the center of Redford's story.

The Great Gatsby Poster: Leonardo DiCaprio & Toby Maguire Go Riding

Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby promises to be completely unlike the 1974 film starring Robert Redford. The F. Scott Fitzgerald book looks to get its cinematic due from the visionary filmmaker behind Moulin Rouge. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character, as well as Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Carey Mulligan.

Warner Bros. has released a new poster for the flick, featuring DiCaprio and Maguire in Gatsby's classic car... out for a ride.

The Great Gatsby Movie Poster

Much was made of the film's delay from last year's Oscar season to a 2013 summer movie. But, given the incredible visuals shown off in The Great Gatsby trailer... the wait is worth it.

The story takes place in the roaring 1920's as America's morals are starting to loosen. Of course, we all know that the Great Depression will curtail those changes until the 1960's... but for one shining decade, people were living loose and free.

Luhrmann has always been known for the look and the power of his films. Judging by these The Great Gatsby character posters... he has done it again. Look for the film when it lands May 10.

The Brass Teapot Review: Money for Nothing

In The Brass Teapot, Juno Temple and Michael Angarano star as a young rural Indiana married couple grappling with crippling finances as they start their life together. Temple is Alice, a highly educated woman who cannot find a job worthy of her training, and Angarano is John, who has a job as a telemarketer, but feels it is beneath him… especially when his boss rides him constantly.

Juno Temple The Brass Teapot

The two are doing their best to get by, but as many married people know… money is a huge source of strife. They think they have found the answers to their prayers when a car accident plants them in front of an antique shop where Alice finds a brass teapot that for some reason that she cannot explain, she must have.

As Alice discovers innocently when she burns herself with a curling iron, when either of the two of them hurt themselves in the presence of the titular object… tons of money appears in the teapot -- the harder the injury, the more money. As teased in our The Brass Teapot exclusive clip, they soon learn that the pain of others produces even more money!

So, what on earth could be the problem?

Well, there are issues on two fronts. There are a pair of Hasidic Jews who keep raiding their home and stealing the money, claiming that it is theirs as their mother (who Alice stole the teapot from in that antique shop) smuggled it out of a concentration camp in World War II.

Also, there is a Chinese man who claims to be an expert on the teapot. He is sure that no good can come of it, and that there is a millennia of examples in history where gifts of money eventually turned evil.

Michael Angarano Juno Temple The Brass Teapot

Previewed in The Brass Teapot trailer, this is a black comedy of the highest order. There is something hilarious about these two hurting themselves for profit. When they learn that emotional scarring leads to even more cash, that is when the comic nature turns dark. After all, physical scars may heal… emotional ones do not.

The Brass Teapot is not necessarily a film that is a must-see. If dark comic tones are your cup of tea, the film is entertaining and enlightening. Above all else, our The Brass Teapot review states that the film shows off why Temple is one of our great up-and-coming actresses.

Weekend Movie Preview: April 5, 2013

This first weekend movie preview of April finds one of the better remakes we've seen in some time (Evil Dead), the return of movie icon Robert Redford (The Company You Keep), the 3D upgrade of a classic (Jurassic Park) and Slumdog Millionaire's director exploring hypnosis for thrills in the heist drama Trance. Oh, and there's a little black comedy that finds that pain equals monetary gain (The Brass Teapot).

Evil Dead: Director Fede Alvarez could be called crazy for trying to remake a classic. But, who's looking brilliant now? As we stated in our Evil Dead review, the latest film in the franchise is astoundingly terrifying and worthy of carrying on the film's moniker. Jane Levy stars as Mia, a woman who is grappling with drug addiction. She heads out to her family's cabin with her brother and friends to try to kick the habit. Only thing is when weird things begin to happen it is at first believed to be side effects of withdrawal. In fact, they are revealed to be a demonic force that threatens the soul of everyone involved.

Trance: Danny Boyle has done it again. His psychological thriller stars James McAvoy as a London art auction expert who may or may not be involved in the heist of a $25 million painting. There is one problem for both the crooks and the cops... during the robbery he hit his head and now has amnesia. Since he can't remember anything... he visits a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) and tries to unlock the secrets to our mystery. As reported in our Trance review, the film is riveting, intense and a must-see.

Jurassic Park 3D: Steven Spielberg has achieved one of the best 3D conversions ever with bringing his classic to life in three dimensions. The crux of our Jurassic Park 3D review extols the virtues of this masterpiece and how it was miraculously shot by Spielberg back in the day, almost knowing he would convert it to 3D one day. That day has arrived, and the beneficiary is the audience. This is one film not to be missed on the big screen. And might we suggest... you see it in IMAX.

The Company You Keep: Redford returns to the directing chair for the first time since 2010 and also stars in the story of 1960's radicals who are being tracked down as the modern FBI has zeroed in on their locations. Redford and his co-stars Susan Sarandon, Sam Elliott and Julie Christie were part of a violent anti-war group that killed a security guard during a bank robbery. Also dazzling in the film, as we state in our The Company You Keep review, is upstart Shia LaBeouf as an investigative journalist. The film stalls at times, but fans of the older actors will be thrilled to see them at their best.

The Brass Teapot: Juno Temple stars in the black comedy that shows that sometimes where there's pain, there's monetary gain. The small film will be released in limited theaters, but as we report in our The Brass Teapot review, it is good fun... even if those in the film are routinely getting hurt for profit.

Bryan Singer took to Twitter today to tease the new look for The Beast. Well, he didn't explicitly state that's what he was doing, but it's a reasonable guess.

The X-Men: Days of Future Past director tweeted the following image, along with the caption "Many a monster wears the form of a man; it is better of the two to have the heart of a man & the form of a monster."

X-Men: Days of Future Past Beast

Nicholas Hoult (Jack the Giant Slayer) portrayed the character in X-Men: First Class, and will return to the role for Days of Future Past. Some fans were not thrilled with the way Beast looked in the first film, which may have caused Singer to go for an updated look.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, and Halle Berry also star.

Days of Future Past will premiere July 18.

Evil Dead: Jessica Lucas & Lou Taylor Pucci on Making "History"

Evil Dead stars Jessica Lucas and Lou Taylor Pucci met Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview where it was clear from the get-go that these two actors were beyond thrilled to now be part of the Evil Dead universe. The cult following has reached epic proportions, resulting in the demand for a 2013 film, based on the original, that completely re-imagines the world in the most scariest of ways. Evidence of that is seen all over the Evil Dead trailer.

"It’s amazing to be a part of history. This film has the most die hard fans anywhere. I literally have people walking up to me to show me their Evil Dead tattoos," Pucci said. "That’s pretty special. It’s insane. But, it’s awesome."

Lucas knew she was onto something at the film's South By Southwest debut. "At the premiere, seeing 1,200 people respond the way they did was really satisfying," Lucas recalled. "I’m totally honored to be a part of it. There was a lot of pressure to get this right and not disappoint the fans. Hopefully we didn’t."

Given our Evil Dead review, she should feel safe in terms of fans' reactions.

Pucci admitted he doesn't normally go for horror films. But, not Lucas. When asked her favorite, she didn't flinch. “The Ring, I still say The Ring,” she admitted. “I like ones that are more psychological in nature. That one really got me.”

Trance: Vincent Cassel Says Working Globally Means "Freedom"

Vincent Cassel is a man of the world. The French actor visited with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview where he talked about his latest, the Danny Boyle-directed Trance.

Cassel grew up watching international cinema so it's only fitting that he star in films made all over the world. His recent work is evidence of that, from Hollywood (Black Swan) to Britain (Trance) and that is just the beginning. We asked the actor why that is so important.

"I’ve been traveling from one place to the next all my life. And now, this is my professional situation reflects my youth. Yeah, I love it. It gives me a sense of freedom," Cassel said. "The other day I did interviews with the international press and I feel like I, more and more, have a connection to each and every country."

Cassel also talks about the varying challenges of working with two helmers, Black Swan's Darren Aronofsky and Trance's Boyle, and how the two directors working at the top of their game challenged him in the most wonderful of ways.

"When you work with directors with such strong personalities and strong visions, they have to be different," Cassel said. "But, that’s what makes it so interesting. But, both of them really love their actors."

42: Harrison Ford Says Jackie Robinson "Had a Rich History"

$

0

Harrison Ford is a guy's guy if there ever was one. You can imagine our surprise at how emotional he got when the Star Wars legend sat down to talk about his new film 42, and proceeded to break down in tears.

42 Harrison Ford

It started when Ford was asked about how 42 was clearly star Chadwick Boseman’s first big break as the legendary Jackie Robinson. The superstar was asked to recall how he felt when he got his first big role. “Well, I was an overnight success. It was just a real long night,” Ford said and laughed.

He then turned quite serious. “The only ambition I ever had… committing to wanting to be an actor to live my life…”

Ford proceeded to get teary-eyed and couldn’t continue to answer that question.

So, we went back even further and asked about Ford’s connection to baseball and if growing up in Chicago, the future Indiana Jones and Han Solo was much of a baseball player.

“I didn’t play much ball. I wasn’t much of a ball fan. I went to Wrigley Field with my family. I remember, actually, Wrigley Field more than I remember the game or anybody in it. It was such a vivid visual image in my mind, still, of that square of improbable grass in the middle of the city,” Ford admitted.

“As a kid, I never followed sports. I played a little Little League. We moved to the suburbs when I was about twelve years old and I played maybe one and a half games of Little League.”

There was something about the environment of youth baseball that perhaps put off Ford, a part of the experience that anyone who has participated in Little League can easily recall. “The whole atmosphere of anxious parents and more anxious children, and it was just too much for me, and we as a family never went back,” Ford said and laughed.

The sport at the heart of the 42 trailer was all new to him. “I came to this script with very little knowledge of the history of baseball or current baseball, so it was a study for me when I became involved.”

42 Harrison Ford Chadwick Boseman

Ford was intrigued to portray a baseball and cultural icon in Branch Rickey, the General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers -- the man who brought Jackie Robinson to his team and made history by breaking the color barrier.

“The thing that attracted me to this project was the quality of the script that I read, and the understanding, and the sheer capacity to know where success lives in the business of making movies. And I don’t mean box-office success. I mean, in terms of the quality of the writing and the ambition of the writing,” Ford said.

“This was such an ambitious and well-qualified recipe for the opportunity to be part of something great. Without Brian’s (Helgeland, director) and all of the actors’ commitment to the ideas that Brian illuminated, we wouldn’t have this piece of work.”

As can be seen in the second 42 movietrailer, Rickey possessed a voice that was just one of the challenges presented to Ford in finding the character.

“There was actually more audio tape available of him than there was visual material. I studied all the photographs and early on, I had the idea that the film would be much better served by a Branch Rickey look-alike than a Harrison Ford look-alike. And I didn’t want the audience to go into the film thinking that they knew me from some previous experience in the movies,” Ford said.

Ford clearly is in great shape, and it was a movie magic trick that aided him in honing the man. “What helped more than anything else was the fat suit, because it really did give me a sense of what it meant to maneuver at that size.”

There was another bonus for tackling the role in 42, a chance to play a “younger” man. “You know that he was 65 years of age at the time and it gave me the opportunity to play a younger man, which is not gonna happen a lot any more in my career,” he said and laughed.

“You know what’s interesting to me is that I remember my father in that period of time and other men of that age at that period in time, and we’re lucky now. We eat better. We live better. But 65 in those days was an older man, so I wanted to acknowledge that part of it.”

Ford is also quick to point out that Robinson was a great man, athlete and force for change, long before Rickey brought him to the big leagues. “He was distinguished before his discovery by Rickey. This guy had a rich history,” Ford added.

42 Chadwick Boseman Harrison Ford

Robinson was a star athlete at UCLA, playing many sports. But, Ford cautions that without Rickey, it might have been decades before someone broke the color barrier. “I think it would have been another ten or twenty years before the civil rights movement happened in its span of time after what happened in baseball. That’s what shouldn’t be forgotten either.”

In the end, Ford cautions that as a whole… movies should be color blind, and that holds true for 42. “I think that the best movies are made not from a point of view that depends on your personal history, whether it’s the color of your skin or the politics that you’ve had or the place that you come from,” Ford said.

“The best movies are made from a point of view of understanding human nature, an understanding of history, an understanding of what motivates people, of what makes a good movie, from an emotional place, and I think this movie serves all of those requirements.”
