Best of Warner Bros. DVD Review: 20 Riveting Romances

0
0

Warner Bros. continues to mark its 90 years of making movie magic with a new DVD box set that celebrates 20 of its best romances, out today. After the Best of Warner Bros. Best Pictures Collection and Best Musicals Collection, the studio is ready to set hearts aflutter with nine decades of romance.

Warner Bros. 20 Best Romance DVD

The set begins with 1938’s Jezebel and concludes with 2008’s Nights in Rodanthe. If there is one thing that is congruent with all the titles in this set it's that the casting of the two leads that fall in love could not have been more perfect.

Can you imagine Casablanca without Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman? How about You’ve Got Mail without Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan? Can’t be done!

The Warner Bros. 20 best romance movies collection is broken into three sections on 22 discs: Timeless Love (1938-1942), Unforgettable Affairs (1950-1965) and Modern Romance (1973-2008).

In between Jezebel and Nights in Rodanthe are some of the most timeless and heartwarming romantic films of all time, not simply ones in the Warner Bros. library.

Included in this set are instant classics that wowed audiences the moment they arrived including Gone with the Wind, The Philadelphia Story and Casablanca, all on our Movie Fanatic Top 100 Movies of All Time. You like romantic sweeping epics? Then how about Dr. Zhivago!

There are also plenty of not just legendary romantic moments, but iconic cinematic scenes that are forever ingrained in movie fans’ minds such as Marlon Brando’s powerhouse performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, James Dean’s timeless Rebel Without a Cause, and who could ever forget the power that was Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman heating up the screen in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?

The modern romance that adds a comedic tone, obviously now known as the romantic comedy, is also in full effect in this Warner Bros. 20 best set from 1977’s The Goodbye Girl to 2002’s Two Weeks Notice.

Spanning this set, there are a few titles we would be remiss by not mentioning. They have all stood the test of time: A Star is Born (1976), Splendor in the Grass (1961), Annie Get Your Gun (1950), The Bodyguard (1992) and The Lake House (2006).

The cast of the Ninja Turtles reboot is filling up, with all four Ninja Turtles cast. Today, Will Arnett joins the fray.

Will Arnett Picture

Arnett's role is undisclosed, though the major roles yet to be cast are the mentor Splinter and the villain Shredder. Our guess is on Shredder, but until there's an official word, we won't know for sure.

The Arrested Development star joins Megan Fox, who will play April O'Neil, and Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, and Noel Fisher who will play Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo.

Michael Bay (Pain and Gain) will produce the film, with Jonathan Liebesman. Ninja Turtles is set to be released next summer.

The Conjuring: James Wan Dishes True Terror Tale

Director James Wan has crafted some of the most memorable horror movies of recent memory. He wrote and directed Saw, Insidious and now is back with the highly buzzed-about, based-on-a-true-story horror flick, The Conjuring.

Fresh off the premiere of The Conjuring trailer, Movie Fanatic caught up with Wan at WonderCon and asked what it was about the film that he hoped to set it apart from his other instant horror classics. First and foremost, the horror in The Conjuring really happened.

"I wanted to make a really scary film that is based on a true story, not just one that uses the true story as a marketing point. I wanted to make a movie based on characters that are still alive who can actually vouch for the film,” Wan said and laughed. “It’s very important. The based-on-a-true-story banner has been watered down lately.”

Wan also dished about reuniting with Patrick Wilson after the two made Insidious. "In Insidious, he played the victim," Wan said. "In The Conjuring he’s now on the other side. He’s the guy trying to get rid of the ghost. He’s the demonologist!"

Trance: Rosario Dawson Talks Crazy Hypnosis Experience

0

Rosario Dawson plays a hypnotherapist in Trance and her character's vocation is the key to the entire mystery that surrounds James McAvoy. Movie Fanatic met Dawson for an exclusive video interview where we asked her if she had ever been hypnotized and what the experience was like.

“Yes, I was hypnotized. It felt really interesting. My temperature dropped, my foot started twitching apparently when she was suggesting certain things that I wasn’t really correlating. Later, afterward, she read me, and she was quite accurate!”

As revealed in the Trance trailer, McAvoy is a high end art auctioneer. When his auction house is hit and a $25 million painting is stolen, he gets hit in the head by one of the robbers and cannot remember a thing. He visits Dawson’s practice, all in an effort to untangle the mystery that is lost inside his mind.

Dawson admitted that filming a movie that dishes out its clues in increments was a challenge.

“We would play with different scenes because you don’t know when it’s all cut together what’s going to feel like way too much of a reveal or actually something that is skipped over,” Dawson said. “You notice it when you see it a second time as you see things that were huge clues, that didn’t even register.”

Just how we like our mystery-thrillers!

And don't miss what Dawson told us exclusively about what to expect from her upcoming film, the highly anticipated Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

"42" Synopsis:
Academy Award winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) wrote and directed the drama "42", starring Chadwick Boseman (The Express) and Oscar nominee Harrison Ford (Witness).

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. "42" tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball.

In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking—ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.

In 1997, Major League Baseball retired the number 42 for all teams, making it the first number in sports to be universally retired. The only exception is April 15th—Jackie Robinson Day—commemorating the date of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger. On that day alone, players from every team proudly wear Number 42 to honor the man who altered the course of history.

42 Still Jackie Robinson

Rounding out the main cast of "42" are: Nicole Beharie (Shame) as Rachel Isum, who would become Robinson’s wife; Christopher Meloni as Leo Durocher; Andre Holland as Wendell Smith; Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese; Hamish Linklater as Ralph Branca; Ryan Merriman as Dixie Walker; and T.R. Knight as Harold Parrott.

The film is produced by Thomas Tull, with Dick Cook, Jon Jashni, and Jason Clark serving as executives producers, and Darryl Pryor and Jillian Zaks co-producing.

Helgeland’s behind-the-scenes collaborators included Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (Forrest Gump), production designer Richard Hoover, costume designer Caroline Harris, and editors Kevin Stitt and Peter McNulty. The music is composed by Oscar nominee Mark Isham (A River Runs Through It).

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present, a Legendary Pictures Production, a Brian Helgeland film, "42". Slated for release April 12, 2013, the film will open in time to commemorate the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day—April 15, the date of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger.

This film has been rated PG-13 for thematic elements including language.

Cinderalla Looks to Bella Heathcote, Lily James, or Margot Robbie to Star

There's something too ironic to even deal with about the idea of a bunch of actresses screen testing to play the role of Cinderella. I mean, do they just have them try on a slipper?

Regardless of how Disney picks its Cinderella, three actresses will be testing for the role this week: Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Margot Robbie, and Lily James.

  • Bella Heathcote Picture
  • Margot Robbie Picture
  • Lily James Downton Abbey

The project changed directorial hands at the beginning of the year, from Mark Romanek to Kenneth Branagh. Emma Watson (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) was originally set to star in the film, but dropped out only a week after her name was mentioned.

Cate Blanchett is set to star as the Evil Godmother, with Richard Madden being talked about to play Prince Charming. Disney hopes to get Cinderella set for a Fall 2014 release.

Evil Dead: Jane Levy Admits "I Had Nightmares"

0
0

Days before we followed up with Evil Dead stars Jane Levy and Jessica Lucas at WonderCon, Movie Fanatic sat down with the film's director Fede Alvarez and Levy, his lead, for an exclusive video interview. In our chat the director. who is a lifelong Evil Dead fan, lets us in on why he thinks the film series is so wildly popular and has been for 40 years.

“It’s different from most horror movies. In most horror movies, the characters are just victims. In Evil Dead movies, as they are getting possessed one by one, there’s always a moment at the end of an Evil Dead movie where the character goes, 'You know what, I’ve had enough.' And they turn around and they face these bad guys. This is very unique," Alvarez said. "The hero story always come out of an Evil Dead movie.”

Levy admitted that beyond the actual challenge of the making of the film, the shoot was difficult to let go of, long after she heard each day’s “cut.”

“It was a good learning experience for the future to never do that again,” Levy said and laughed. “I didn’t sleep very much. I had nightmares. But it was a lesson in tolerance, and next time, I’m going to have a lot more fun with it.”

Check out the Evil Dead trailer and try to not be scared. Our review will be live April 5, but we can tell you this much: It's the scariest movie you will see this year. Guaranteed.

Oblivion Director Calls Tom Cruise "Biggest Movie Star in the World"

0
0

Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski literally just finished working on his Tom Cruise/Morgan Freeman-starring sci-fi epic before heading to Anaheim for WonderCon. “I just finished it two nights ago,” Kosinski said. As shown in the Oblivion trailer, the story follows Cruise on a post-alien-attack Earth and beyond that... the plot is a mystery!

Tom Cruise Stars in Oblivion

We caught up with the helmer (who made his directorial debut with Tron: Legacy -- see what he said about a Tron: Legacy sequel!) to talk about what inspired this story he created, how having Cruise in your movie changes everything and also what it is about the sci-fi genre that he loves so much for telling far-reaching stories.

Movie Fanatic: What does having Tom Cruise in your movie mean? Is it a guarantee that it will get made?

Joseph Kosinski: I don’t know that anything is a guarantee, but your odds go way up for sure. For me, it is above all else… having a fantastic actor. There are few people out there that can carry a movie on their shoulders. Tom is the biggest movie star in the world, but he is also an amazing actor. What I’m most excited about people seeing in this movie is his performance. It’s really just incredible.

Movie Fanatic: You’ve got a strong actor in Tom Cruise, but having Morgan Freeman too, that’s like icing on the cake…

Joseph Kosinski: You know Tom and I from the very beginning talked about how amazing it would be to get someone like Morgan Freeman in that role. Then to be able to get him was not only a huge thrill for me but for Tom as well. And I think for Morgan. Morgan told me that he and Tom had always wanted to work together but they were waiting for the right project and that Oblivion was the right one. So for it to be in my film was a real honor. I think the scenes between Tom and Morgan are some of the best in the movie just because you’re seeing two incredible actors with so much experience playing off each other in a really fascinating way.

Movie Fanatic: What is it about the genre of science fiction that you like as a mode of story telling?

Joseph Kosinski: Well, I feel like it has no limits. You can tell familiar stories in ways that are completely different. The way Avatar told a love story in a way that we had never seen before. 2001 opened people’s minds to the world of space exploration in a way that had never been done before. So for me in a way it’s kind of like the new Western, you know? We live in a science fiction film. The world we live in is surrounded by elements of science fiction so I think it is something that people are very comfortable with but at the same time you can bend the rules in ways that are very exciting.

Joseph Kosinski Photo

Movie Fanatic: What do you personally enjoy about it so much?

Joseph Kosinski: I love the idea of taking people to the cinema and disappearing and going somewhere else for a few hours. Science fiction allows that. They are very hard movies to make. From a story point of view there is a lot of world building that you have to do. It’s not like a cop drama where you can just drop people in New York City and you know the rules of the world and you can go right into story. You have to set the table correctly. There is an arc to that and a challenge. But I think that when you do it right the payoff to that is huge.

Movie Fanatic: What was the actual first inspiration for the story?

Joseph Kosinski: Who knows where it comes from [laughs]? I will tell you that I had just moved to Los Angeles, I was having a lot of trouble breaking into the commercial business. I was trying to get into the commercial/music video business as a steppingstone into feature films and mimic the path of Ridley Scott and David Fincher, the guys I kind of looked up to. So Oblivion became a way for me to keep my creative juices flowing because I wasn’t able to get any work at the time. It was kind of a side project.

Movie Fanatic: Was there anything that inspired it from your past?

Joseph Kosinski: As a kid growing up, I loved the Twilight Zone television series. The half hour episodes had a small cast of characters, very limited budget -- sometimes just a couple of sets -- but somehow the stories had such big ideas. So I was trying to create a character-driven mystery thriller, set in the future that I thought might be my first film. Obviously eight years later… it’s become much bigger than that.

Oblivion Star Tom Cruise

Movie Fanatic: Has the story framework remained the same as you envisioned it years ago?

Joseph Kosinski: I’m really proud of that, that it survived being turned into a big tent pole film with that story intact.

Movie Fanatic: Considering this is a story that you’ve had in your head for so long, what are your emotions as the world is getting to see it? And are you ready to let your baby go out into the world?

Joseph Kosinski: I just finished the IMAX version! It’s interesting. It’s like you give birth to a baby and you get to hold it for like five seconds and they take it. With a post schedule and release schedule like we have on this film, I literally got to watch the movie once complete before it was shipped. It’s a surreal thing to see how fast the process works, especially with digital distribution. But the truth is -- I’m pretty relaxed now. Nothing I can do right now will affect the movie anymore. It’s an oddly calm time.

Grown Ups 2 Trailer: You Guys are Losers!

Grown Ups landed in 2010 and was a surprise hit, even for someone used to making blockbuster comedies, Adam Sandler. So, why not do a sequel? Sandler has gotten his comic buddies back, including Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade and the proof is in the pudding that is the debut of the trailer for Grown Ups 2.

In our exclusive Kevin James interview, the actor could not contain his excitement at heading back to make another comedy with some of his personal best friends.

The story follows Sandler and his onscreen wife Salma Hayek, as they head back to Sandler's hometown to build a better life for their kids. As teased in the trailer above, there are a few new cast members, highlighted by frat guy Taylor Lautner. Perhaps the Twilight Saga hunk is good at comedy? Time will tell...

Look for Grown Ups 2 when it premieres in theaters July 12.

Remembering Roger Ebert: Living Life with Two Thumbs Up

0
0

The news that Roger Ebert dies at age 70 was not necessarily out of left field. His battle with cancer is long documented. It's just sad, given the fact that just yesterday the legendary critic had said that he was stepping away for a break to battle the cancer that had returned. Less than 24 hours later... he was gone.

Roger Ebert Two Thumbs Up

Above all else, Ebert was the people's critic. Before he and Gene Siskel did their At the Movies show, most critics seemed to only appreciate art house films or movies that were the type that earned Academy Award nominations. Ebert could find something that someone would enjoy in most movies, and the movie-going public adored him for it. In fact, in his autobiography Life Itself, Ebert wrote that he considered himself "beneath everyone else as a fan."

That pretty much sums up Ebert -- ever gracious, always keeping in mind the taste of the entirety of the movie-going public.

What's more is by having At the Movies airing weekly, movie reviews entered the nation's living rooms and brought the art of film to the masses as it had never been prior. We were in a television age after all, and Ebert and Siskel were way ahead of their time. It was a world long before internet websites such as Movie Fanatic that brought you movie reviews and news on a daily basis.

When it came to getting inside the movies we loved, there was At the Movies and nothing else.

Plus, he and Siskel coined a phrase that would not only become a standard in their reviewing of films, but would permeate popular culture as well. Giving something "Two Thumbs Up" transcended the film community to life as we know it.

Ebert began his career as a screenwriter and thus perhaps provided his greatest asset to evaluating movies. His script for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was the only one of his that saw the light of day and became a film. But, the experience led him to be well-versed in all the aspects of movie-making that he would study and critique for decades to come.

What Ebert meant to this movie journalist and film reviewer is that it made the art of movie criticism accessible. He made you feel that there could be a career out there for someone who lived for talking about film. Without Ebert... I would not be here writing for a savvy movie readership that also owes the man a great debt. He will be missed.

Here's to a life led with both thumbs firmly up.

Danny Boyle Talks Making Trance & Simultaneously Orchestrating Olympics

0
0

When we caught up with Trance director Danny Boyle for an exclusive video interview, Movie Fanatic had the most fascinating take-away. The helmer behind Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours found it cathartic to simultaneously create the opening ceremonies for the 2012 London Summer Olympics and film Trance.

Orchestrating his country's opening ceremonies would have been anyone else's full-time job. Not Boyle, and in fact he found the experience of filming the psychological thriller Trance therapeutic. "The truth is -- and it’s funny to say this about this movie as it is a dark and disturbing movie at times and it’s about insanity -- this kept us sane because it was the Olympic games that was driving us insane," Boyle said. "To be able to go to a night shift where you were shooting this dark, disturbing film was delicious."

As teased in the Trance trailer, the film deals with hypnosis and how it can hold the key to unlocking the mystery of an art heist. James McAvoy is an art auctioneer who, due to amnesia, does not remember a thing after a $25 million painting at his auction house is stolen. He visits Rosario Dawnson's hypnotherapist in an effort to try to unlock the memories that are eluding him.

Boyle treasured his moments filming at night due to the immense pressure of an entire nation and their collective expectations for him to stage an opening ceremony worthy of a country of Britain's historical power.

"To make a movie that is a series of hypnotic trances that delved deeper and deeper into this character and that all the characters get lured into them, was fantastic when your day job was building a lovely portrait of the nation," Boyle said and chuckled.

And don't miss what the director said about his effort to make Trainspotting 2!

Carrie Trailer: The Devil Never Dies

0
0

The first full trailer for Carrie has landed and all those Carrie stills we've seen so far that led us to believe this was going to be one terrifying remake... let's just say those feelings are spot-on.

Chloe Moretz is the title character while Julianne Moore portrays her slightly unhinged mother. Fans of the original, starring Sissy Spacek, may have wondered why a remake was necessary. Try witnessing this two-minute-plus teaser and not admit this film goes right to the top of your fall must-sees!

With the Evil Dead remake arriving April 5, perhaps 2013 is the year of remaking horror classics. The film is based on the first film, yes, but it looks to be a whole lot more faithful to the Stephen King novel. Look for Carrie when it lands in theaters October 18, just in time for Halloween!

Evil Dead Review: Deliciously Deadite!

0
0

Many would wonder why anyone would attempt to remake a cult classic such as Evil Dead. The truth is Evil Dead 2013 should serve as a cinematic lesson in how to revisit a story that has become iconic.

Evil Dead Star Jane Levy

In 1981, The Evil Dead arrived from mastermind Sam Raimi. The Oz: The Great and Powerful director made his mark by writing and directing the horror film that set a standard of excellence for the genre. The flick starred Bruce Campbell in the role of Ash, a part that would come to define him. The Evil Dead would spawn two sequels -- the most famous is Army of Darkness. Ash and Campbell became connected as Ash and that chainsaw.

There are several pieces to this puzzle that had to come together and allow this horrific swath of creative genius to bloom anew. Having Campbell and Raimi as executive producers is certainly one. The second puzzle piece, and most important, is writer-director Fede Alvarez.

The Uruguayan filmmaker impressed Campbell and Raimi with his work on the short film Panic Attack and the promise that was shown on that thrill ride has come to fruition on every frame of this film -- proof is teased in the Evil Dead trailer.

Evil Dead doesn’t try to be something it’s not. The story is simple. This time out a group of friends has traveled to a cabin to support Mia (Jane Levy) as she tries to kick drugs once and for all. Mia has gathered her best of the best mates and even gotten her estranged brother (Shiloh Fernandez) to come along for familial support.

When she starts “feeling” things aren’t right at the cabin, the audience knows what is going on, but her support group dismisses it as a withdrawal symptom. Meanwhile, Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) has discovered a basement and a book that could not appear more evil.

Imaginations… start your engines.

How marvelous the film is lies also with the cast. Leading the charge is the actress who plays Mia. As she told us in our Jane Levy interview, the thespian had to inhabit three distinct roles. Her character’s arc is far reaching and terrifying. She is miles away from Suburgatory!

Evil Dead Shiloh Fernandez Jessica Lucas

Joining her in this triumphant evil excellence is Fernandez, Pucci and Jessica Lucas, who portrays Mia’s friend Olivia. Even the selecting of Olivia’s vocation is a perfect example of the care and thought that went into the writing of this screenplay by Alvarez. The fact that Olivia is a nurse, further fans the fire of terror for the audience.

Even though we know that Mia is coming under the influence of some demonic force -- between the drug withdrawal and the medical explanation given by Olivia -- the audience can be simultaneously confident in the calm-ish nature of Mia's friends while waiting for the other scary shoe to drop.

As for details beyond what Movie Fanatic has already stated, we will provide none. This film must be seen on the big screen and if horror movies are your thing, our Evil Dead review can firmly state that the film is the scariest movie you will see this year. Guaranteed.

Iron Man 3 TV Spot: Watch This!

0

It's interesting, the Mandarin-heavy promos for Iron Man 3 all seem so dark and dramatic. The Stark-heavy promos seem so fun and lively. This new international TV spot falls into the latter category:

The third film in the superhero series will kick off Marvel Phase 2 in the comic book company's cinematic universe. This time, Iron Man's personal world is attacked, leaving him to question what is important to him.
