Warm Bodies DVD Review: Zombies Need Love Too

As we stated when the undead love story hit theaters in our Warm Bodies review, zombies are sexy! Yes, you read that correctly. The love story that is unlike anything you have ever seen is an absolute delight and now that it is arriving on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, the entire world can share in the love story between Nicholas Hoult’s zombie and Teresa Palmer’s human who has survived the apocalypse.

Warm Bodies DVD

In one of the more original film premises we’ve seen in some time, Warm Bodies tells the tale of Hoult’s R. He narrates the film from its opening moments and immediately captures its spirit. This is a comedy, while the horror is still real in that although he may be of the kinder, gentler version… zombies still are possessed by one thing: Eating brains!

Palmer lives in a walled city that is the last stand of humans against the invading zombies. Her father (played expertly by the always awesome John Malkovich) is the military leader who has ensured the safety and continuation of civilization. When she heads out on a supply securing mission outside the border, she encounters R and a “gang” of zombies who themselves have gone out looking for food. After devouring her boyfriend, R rescues Palmer’s Julie and takes her back to his abandoned airport home.

Immediately it is easy to see that this film is chock full of charm, first teased in the Warm Bodies trailer. Palmer and Hoult’s chemistry is electric and palpable and is largely why the movie triumphs. Writer-director Jonathan Levine (the story is based on a novel by Isaac Marion) has a firm command over his story and there are no letdowns throughout the entire viewing experience.

After Levine’s stellar work making kicking cancer’s butt funny, romantic and touching in 50/50 -- the filmmaker has done it again by tackling a scary subject and making it… well, human.

A film like this should be owned on home video as it is one that you can easily witness again and again. Audiences will also want to share the most original of concepts with friends. It is one of the movies you will just want to have on hand so when a “you’ve haven’t seen Warm Bodies” comment comes up, it’s fresh and ready to fire in the DVD or Blu-Ray players.

The extras abound and each is more entertaining than the last. And that is not surprising given the thought and careful touch filmmakers had putting together the Warm Bodies movie itself.

Nicholas Hoult Teresa Palmer Warm Bodies

The Boy Meets, ER, Doesn’t Eat Girl featurette captures the tone of the film and takes you inside the movie magic that made it happen. The R&J Featurette shows how the creative team behind the film was inspired by Romeo and Juliet and their iconic star-crossed lovers' story that was astoundingly brought to life using zombies and humans!

And one of our absolute favorite features on the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack is Whimsical Sweetness: Teresa Palmer’s Warm Bodies Home Movies. It is rare on a home video package that the star gives such a personal and insightful look at the journey from script page to silver screen, and now home video.

Rob Corddry also stars in the film and shows off some serious acting chops. But, most of us know him as the comedian who is at the top of his game right now. His Zombie Acting Tips with Rob Corddry featurette proves that you can get a comic to do drama, but at its heart… he will always be “killer” with comedy. And even the film’s gag reel is as original as they come. Heck the title alone is priceless: Shrug and Groan Gag Reel. Enough said!

Finding Joy Exclusive Clip: When Kyle Meets Joy

Finding Joy has the most adorable of premises as it lands in theaters and on-demand June 7. In our exclusive clip from the romantic comedy, Josh Cooke stars as Kyle and Liane Balaban is Joy and we get to the heart of the title. Our spot shows when Kyle first met Joy!

As teased in the Finding Joy trailer, Kyle is a rather self-centered writer, who doesn’t seem like he is in any kind of position to meet the woman of his dreams, although it is clear he wants to be in that position. Throughout the film, he discovers his inner self and reconnects with his slightly off kilter family and by the end, may just have success Finding Joy.

As you see in our exclusive clip, Kyle is a little nervous throughout the encounter and Joy is a bit on the spacey side. It’s a wonder to see if these two manage to get together.

The film also stars Barry Bostwick and Lainie Kazan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding)

The Lone Ranger Featurette: Performing a Dangerous Stunt

While I would not be a fan of climbing a giant platform on the edge of a cliff, it seems like the bulk of this stunt is just Armie Hammer standing there while a helicopter circles him.

Nonetheless, it doesn't look fun. See what I mean in the new featurette for The Lone Ranger:

Hammer plays John Reid, a Texas Ranger who is found on the brink of death by a Native American named Tonto, played by Johnny Depp. Together, the unlikely duo adopt a life of vigilante justice.

William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson, Barry Pepper, Mason Cook, Ruth Wilson, Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables), and James Badge Dale (Iron Man 3) also star.

Gore Verbinski directs the film, which comes out July 3.

The Purge: Ethan Hawke on Our "History of Violence"

The Purge lands in theaters and finds Ethan Hawke as the patriarch of a family living in a quite different U.S.A. As our story picks up, the crime rates are down and it is all attributed to a little thing called The Purge. Teased in The Purge trailer, for one night a year, for 12 hours, everything is legal when it comes to violence.

Ethan Hawke The Purge

Government leaders believe this lets human beings, who they believe are inherently violent, get it “out of their system.” For Hawke, the film provided an opportunity to say a lot of things… as genre movies often do. “There’s certain things you have to do to fulfill the audience's expectations,” Hawke said of genre films.

“But inside that you have complete freedom to talk about whatever you want. And in a way it’s wonderful ‘cause you get to make a movie that deals with all these socio-political issues. I mean, who wants to see a movie about gun violence in America and class? But if you set it in this terrifying, fun roller coaster ride of a movie, you could talk about whatever you want.”

After Sinister, this is Hawke’s second family in peril film in consecutive years -- although it could not be more different. This is a family whose home is being invaded by people whose sole desire is to see them dead.

“I think it plays into an age old human fear. Whenever any of us see glimpses of revolution or riots on television or absolute anarchy, it could be really terrifying,” Hawke said.

“There’s a moment in the movie where you see the husband and wife loading guns and teaching her how to take the safety off and it’s kind of every parent’s worst nightmare. Your worst fear is sometimes something you enjoy thinking about for some strange reason. I don’t know why that is. I’m petrified by such a thing. I don’t enjoy thinking about it.”

The Purge Photo

Whether The Purge is commenting on society is up to the audience. But, Hawke thinks that there could easily be a discussion spawned by the issues raised throughout.

“I know it’s trying to put its finger on touching something. It’s an extremely violent film with an anti-violent message. It’s almost an oxymoron,” Hawke said.

“The whole scene of culture with all these people with guns and sharpening their knives, our country is obsessed with violence and our right to protect our violence. They call you unpatriotic if you’re not violent. It heightens it. It’s just taking a certain thing and exaggerating it. And that’s what the best Philip K. Dick stuff does and that’s what this is trying to do.”

Sinister was the esteemed actor’s first venture into the world of horror/suspense. When the producer of that film, Jason Blum, handed Hawke the script for The Purge, Hawke was ready to head back down the rabbit hole of horror.

“I had so much fun on Sinister and when I was younger I had loved genre movies and one of my first directors was this guy Joe Dante who had directed The Howling, Piranha and Gremlins. He had taught me a real love of what was possible with a genre movie and namely that a good genre movie is a really scary, really fun thing to go see on Friday night, but also has some subterranean political message,” Hawke said.

“And The Purge is perfect. Sinister in a way does too and I’ve always wanted to flirt with genre movies because I also did Daybreakers. In a lot of ways Training Day is a genre movie too. I could do a little series of them ‘cause it’s just a cop genre."

The esteemed actor also spoke to Movie Fanatic about his fascination with how both The Purge and his other movie that’s out now in limited release, Before Midnight, are both rated R. “It’s amazing. It’s almost like something out of The Purge that Before Midnight would be rated R because of a breast. I go see PG-13 movies with my son that have a death count in the thousands. I never know how they come up with it,” Hawke said.

The Purge Lena Headey Ethan Hawke

Our country’s relationship with sex and violence is a fascinating conundrum to Hawke. “We’re both puritanical on one level and libertarian on the next. I don’t even know what to say about it. Sex is a lot scarier to us than violence. We could write essays about it. On Sinister, Scott Derrickson (director) worked so hard not to get an R. He wanted no cursing. There’s no blood in the movie. But, it was so damn scary, they gave it an R. I don’t know how we decide what children should and shouldn’t see. My mother would let me see anything.”

When asked if he thought that the concept of The Purge would work in real life, Hawke said we simply need to look back at our collective history.

“If you study the history of mankind, it seems to be a history of violence. It’s kind of terrifying. Certainly, if you look at paintings, movies or plays, or whatever, it is a litany of murder and death,” he said. Yet, he is optimistic and scenes like the recent bombings in Boston further enhance that view.

“For every crazed kid in Boston who wants to blow something up, there’s a 100 people running to stop it -- thousands of people crying tears that it did happen. Violence doesn’t define us.”

Escape from Planet Earth DVD Review: Animated Sci-Fi Fun for Kids

Escape from Planet Earth arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray and as the kids across America start their summer vacation, the Weinstein Company has unveiled their first home video must. The animated film features an all-star cast including Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch, Rob Corddry, Ricky Gervais, Craig Robinson, George Lopez and William Shatner.

Escape from Planet Earth DVD

In fact, it was our exclusive interview with the last star on that list where William Shatner called J.J. Abrams a pig! But, don’t hold that against him, even if he is the villain in this film that turns the alien invasion genre completely on its head. It seems in Escape from Planet Earth, the humans are the evil-doers and it is the aliens who are trying their best to get home.

As we stated in our theatrical Escape from Planet Earth review, this is a film that is clearly for children. Parents might find it a bit mundane, but the animation is gorgeous and the voice-over performances are top notch.

The Escape from Planet Earth trailer hints at the plot that chronicles the adventures of the people of Planet Baab, who are quite blue, but in color only! They adore their space exploration hero Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser), even if his Mission Control head brother Gary (Corddry) is the key to his success.

BASA’s chief (Alba) gets a distress signal from the “Dark Planet,” and she sends Scorch on a mission to rescue those who sent it. Turns out, that evil planet… is Earth! Scorch heads out, despite the objections of Gary and… well, that’s all we’re going to tell!

Escape From Planet Earth Still

The DVD and Blu-Ray bonus features include the director commentary track by Cal Brunker, which is especially interesting on an animated movie. Hearing about the choices he made artistically and plot-wise adds a little something more to the experience for adults, and kids will also be intrigued by the behind-the-scenes access.

If the little ones are intrigued by the “how-to” aspect of making an animated movie, the bonus feature How to Make An Animated Feature with Director Cal Brunker is a gift from heaven.

The “Making-Of” doc is a nice addition, especially for those youthful aspiring to be animators. And a terrific addition for an animated movie that we don’t get too much on home video releases is the alternative takes feature and for kids who can’t get enough of their Escape from Planet Earth, the deleted scenes will compel.

Unlike May, that was blockbuster heavy (Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness), June arrives with a bit more variety in its tent pole worthy slate of films.

For one, there are a few comedies in the mix (The Internship, This Is The End, The Heat) as summer heats up, Pixar returns to form with Monsters University, and some superstars battle like never before including Brat Pitt (World War Z) and Channing Tatum (White House Down).

Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

Also, for those who enjoy their drama as real as it gets, check out The Bling Ring trailer, Sofia Coppola’s Emma Watson-starring true story about a group of Los Angeles teenagers who are obsessed with celebrity who proceed to rob those rich and famous… simply for kicks.

Horror-suspense is well represented with the Ethan Hawke-starring The Purge, which imagines what a world would be like where for one night a year, all laws went out the window!

And how could we forget the film that is most likely going to rule the month… Superman’s back as seen in the Man of Steel trailer. Henry Cavill is the titular character and the casting could not have been better.

So tell us esteemed readers…

Insidious Chapter 2 Trailer Debuts: James Wan Talks Terror

Movie Fanatic was thrilled to descend on an abandoned hospital (the haunted Linda Vista!) in Los Angeles last night for a special event where we were among the first to catch the first trailer that just premiered (below) for Insidious Chapter 2!  Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are back from the first smash hit and it appears that that demon force they were battling in the first movie is not done with them or their family.

Director James Wan (who just signed to helm Fast and Furious 7) met us and a select group of fans afterwards and answered a few questions about the trailer and the Insidious world in general. First up… that highly anticipated trailer!

The most astonishing reveal from the Wan chat was that Insidious Chapter 2 will flirt with time travel. Yeah… that! It seems we’re getting to see a little of the backstory of young Josh, Lorraine and Elise in 1986.

Wan also admitted that where the first film tributed a classic of the horror vein, his second chapter in the Insidious world will salute another.

“Whereas the first movie has a twist on the classic haunted house genre, the second one is a slightly different movie, and so it has a twist on a different sub-genre,” Wan said. “It’s more in the vein of like a domestic thriller, but with a pervasive supernatural undertone, which is kind of what The Shining is in some ways.”

The emerging horror master also let us know how he comes up with his scares… seems that the man likes to push his own limits.

“When I was designing some of the scares for Insidious and my previous scary movie that I shot, one of the things I would do is literally walk through my house late at night with all the lights out and think up these really trippy, creepy scenarios and if I get really creeped out then I know it’s working,” Wan said.

Audiences will have to wait until September 13 for Insidious Chapter 2, but fans of Wan’s only have to wait until July 19 for his latest scary movie, The Conjuring.

The Internship: Shawn Levy Says Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson "Make Each Other Laugh"

With The Internship, director Shawn Levy saw the film as a chance to further show the world the magic that is the comic chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Levy phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview and told us the two were waiting for the right project that would be as different from their 2005 smash as possible.

Vince Vaugn Owen Wilson The Internship

“My feeling was on one hand, obviously we’re re-teaming a very famous duo from Wedding Crashers and with this premise -- it was a different kind of tone. It’s Google. I thought it was silly for it to be racy for its own sake. There’s something hopeful and heartwarming about this movie,” Levy said.

Most things in comedy are hard to quantify, but we got Levy to try to put a finger on what it is about the Vaughn and Wilson tandem that works so well.

“It certainly has to do with the contrast. All great comedy duos have a tonal contrast. Vince and Owen, right down to the way that they look, the way that they talk, the rhythms of their speech, the tones of their voices, are so different. Somehow they combine in a funny way,” Levy said.

The pair also cherishes each other on many levels and that clearly shows on every frame of film, even in the little shown in The Internship trailer.

“They love to make each other laugh. It’s a beautiful thing to watch. In real life and in a scene, they love to make each other laugh. There’s genuine affection between these guys. We’ll do the script, but they are both talented writers and both go off road and try different material in the interest of finding the best possible joke, scene and ultimately… making the other dude laugh.”

As the father of three, he knew The Internship should come in less crass than Wedding Crashers, but still mature enough that it would go over young kids’ heads.

Shawn Levy Owen Wilson Vince Vaughn The Internship

“I am the family man. I know what it means to make movies that the whole family can see and I would not put it in that category. Certainly, my six-year-old will not be coming to this movie. But, my eleven and thirteen-year-old daughters have seen it and they love it. They love that it combines an aspirational comedic tone with a glimpse of a world that they’ve heard about and is a part of their lives. But, few of us get to go and get a glimpse from the inside.”

The Internship follows the story of Vaughn’s Billy and Wilson’s Nick, who in the opening moments of the film we learn are some seriously talented salesmen. But, they are also dinosaurs and soon after that opening scene, the duo are fired as their business is closing. Wondering what to do next, the duo throw caution into the wind and try to get a job at Google -- teased in this The Internship clip.

Levy tells us that the tech giant was not only integral to getting the film made, but respectful when it comes to the creative process of making movies.

“Google was really helpful, but I have to tell you, what was more impressive than their helpfulness was the fact that they really honored their word. I told them up front that it was going to be funny. I didn’t know if it would be rated R or PG-13, but it was going to be irreverent. It was going to poke fun at a lot of aspects of Google culture, as well as the characters. And it would not be mean-spirited. Once those promises were made, I needed real creative autonomy,” Levy said.

“I was impressed that they helped me when I asked for help getting the details right, but they made good on their promise to let the filmmakers make the film. Very frankly, they were very trusting. The movie isn’t a documentary about Google. There are a lot of things about it that are not quite accurate. But, they seemed pleased in the end that I captured something of the ethos of this company that rings true for them.”

Levy believes that The Internship is equally hilarious, heartfelt and at the same time inspirational and timely.

“I have friends who are in their early forties, who suddenly have no sense of security that everything they’ve worked for is going to hold out. They don’t think their retirement or jobs will be there for the long term. So, it felt like a timeliness to some part of the premise,” Levy admitted.

Vince Vaughn Owen Wilson The Internship

At the same time, as the father of two pre-teen daughters who know that they can go to the great schools and they can get good grades, and they can come out of school with no certainty about getting jobs – the film also plays to their feelings about the future.

“It’s why we wrote that scene in the movie where there is a generation of twenty-somethings talking to these guys who are forty, and both generations are intercepting in a moment of insecurity,” Levy said.

“It’s a movie ultimately, what we’ve gotten from people consistently, is that it is feel good and inspirational, and I think it has something to do with this group of interns -- these two generations (the younger led by Teen Wolf star Dylan O'Brien) -- who start off with a lot of mutual mistrust and skepticism, and they end up intersecting and collaborating between the generations that makes the movie resonate to a wide range of people. It’s hard to capture in a movie trailer or movie commercial. But, everyone who sees the movie is real clear on what the movie is.”

Levy himself is an impressive study in a directing career. His cinematic inspiration is as good as it gets. “The role models for me are guys like Ron Howard, who really over the course of a career have genuine genre variety and diversity. Yet, a Ron Howard movie is always going to be humanist, it’s always going to be uncynical and warm-hearted and have great performances. Sometimes he paints on a big canvas, sometimes it’s a small one, like Frost/Nixon,” Levy said.

Levy has gone from making the Night at the Museum movies to Real Steel and now The Internship and is clearly on his way to a Howard-like career of diversity.

“To go from Real Steel to The Internship to this movie I’m making now, This Is Where I Leave You -- which is a family comedy -- I feel really privileged that I’m getting to have the career that I dreamed of, which is a career that is varied and eclectic."

The first trailer for the new action thriller Getaway has arrived.

The film seems like a dramatic version of the 2011 comedy 30 Minutes Or Less, but it feels odd to see a movie about a skilled driver carrying out crimes in order to protect someone he loves that doesn't star Ryan Gosling.

The trailer also features Ethan Hawke doing his best "angry Tom Cruise" at the end. Take a look:

Hawke (The Purge) stars as Bret Magna, a former race car driver whose wife is kidnapped. The mysterious kidnapper forces Magna to get behind the wheel and do exactly as he says in order to retrieve his wife.

Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers) co-stars as a young hacker who gets herself involved in the situation. Jon Voight, James Manslow, Bruce Payne, Paul Freeman, and Rebecca Budig also star.

Courtney Solomon and Yaron Levy co-direct the film. Catch it in theaters August 30.
