12 Years a Slave Trailer: Brad Pitt Brings Attention to Triumphant True Story

$

0

Brad Pitt may be the “biggest” star in 12 Years a Slave, but as the film’s first trailer has arrived, he is merely a bit player in the true story you have to see to believe. We think Pitt saw the power in this story and knew that his name added to the cast list would bring attention to a film that should be required viewing for anyone who gets inspired by what real life people are capable of doing in the most extraordinary of circumstances.

12 Years a Slave tells the astounding true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man living in upstate New York who was abducted and sold into slavery. Michael Fassbender plays a malicious slave owner who makes Northrup’s titular time in bondage a living hell. But, as the film’s trailer shows, there are also moments of kindness that fuel Northrup’s fire to survive.

Things begin to change for our protagonist when he meets a Canadian abolitionist played by Pitt, who will alter his life forever.

12 Years a Slave has also released its first poster (below) and is directed by Steve McQueen (Shame) and also features stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness), Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Sara Paulson, Alfre Woodard, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Bullet to the Head DVD Review: Does Sylvester Stallone Age?

$
0
0

Bullet to the Head lands on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download and stars screen icon Sylvester Stallone in a role that has us wondering if he will ever slow down. After the success of The Expendables movies, Stallone seems to be on his fourth (or is it fifth) career resurgence. Not only is his professional mojo pumping in full, but so is his screen presence as the action scenes in Bullet to the Head are as intense as those in some of his earlier work, such as Rambo.

Bullet to the Head DVD

The story as teased in the Bullet to the Head trailer follows Stallone’s hit man who is seeking revenge for the death of his partner. Common enemies produce the most unlikely of allies, history has shown, and that mantra is no different in Stallone’s latest. He must team up with a Washington D.C. detective (Sung Kang) who wants to capture the same person who is responsible for the death of Stallone’s partner.

One key to whether the film works or not is the chemistry between Kang and Stallone and let’s just say it works more than it doesn’t, although we could do without the Asian stereotype jokes that seem a bit too present. What does work extremely well is the screen presence of Jason Momoa, who plays some sort of bad guy (we don’t want to give away too much). The man who was (is?) Conan the Barbarian explodes off the screen in a manic performance that totally fits for the movie he is in.

The film is directed by Walter Hill (Last Man Standing, 48 Hours) and that brings a certain level of credence to the film, even if the storyline is a bit soft, as we stated in our theatrical Bullet to the Head review.

The Bullet to the Head Blu-Ray and DVD extras are a bit on the short side. In fact, there is only one: Bullet to the Head: Mayhem Inc. It features Stallone taking audiences on the journey of him getting “ripped” as he trains for action fight scenes and weaponry training… oh, and that climatic axe fight with Momoa.

Twentieth Century Fox has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The sequel to Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief arrives August 7 and delves further into the demigod’s origins and where the son of Neptune appears to be headed in life, destiny-wise.

The feature has insight from stars Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith and Nathan Fillion.

The Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters trailer gave us a feel for the film that follows Jackson and his journey to fulfill his destiny. This time out, as the title suggests, they take to the sea and something tells us, that will bring him closer to his father.

Red 2 Exclusive: Byung-hun Lee on Breaking Big in America

Red 2 lands in theaters this Friday and Movie Fanatic got to talk exclusively with one of the biggest action stars in the planet, who is making his American debut in the sequel to Red. South Korean Byung-hun Lee has made movies banking hundreds of millions of dollars and now that American audiences have seen even a glimpse of him in the Red 2 trailer, he is poised to be the next Asian superstar to conquer the States.

Red 2 Bruce Willis Byung-hun Lee

Lee phoned us for our exclusive chat where he talked about how surreal it was to film an action sequence with his action movie hero, Bruce Willis. But, it was also a pinch-me moment for the young star sharing credits with actors and actresses who were his all-time favorites.

Movie Fanatic: What does it mean to you to be in a big American, Hollywood, movie… especially one that follows up the success of Red?

Byung-hun Lee: I was a huge fan of the first Red, so I was so excited when I heard I was cast in this project. Also, the legendary cast of that movie -- it is a very honorable experience for me to work with them.

Movie Fanatic: The idea of your name is on the credits that include Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Anthony Hopkins. Has it even sunk in yet?

Byung-hun Lee: Frankly, it feels unreal [laughs]. There is one more name on the title, at the end of the film, my father’s name is on it as a special thanks. My father’s picture is on the film, too! That was the highest of honors for me and my family.

Movie Fanatic: There are so many killer action sequences you are a part of in Red 2, which one was the most challenging and why

Byung-hun Lee: It’s beating up Bruce Willis that makes me so excited. But, also, I was kind of worried about what if I hit him really hard? That would not be good. That scene made me really nervous. Fortunately, we did not have any accidents or injuries!

Movie Fanatic: Speaking of Bruce, what was it like working with the guy who you idolized?

Byung-hun Lee: I was a huge fan of him -- I grew up with his action movies, like Die Hard. It was unreal for me to have an action sequence with him. He was amazing and so generous. On the set, he has so many great ideas. He creates a lot of things to add in every scene. I learned so much from him. We made a lot of great action, together, and that was the best part.

Red 2 Byung-hun Lee

Movie Fanatic: What other movie stars -- beyond Bruce -- inspired you to pursue this field?

Byung-hun Lee: All the actors in this film are actually who I admired growing up! But, I especially admired Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich. They’re legendary actors. It was unforgettable memories that were made with those two.

Movie Fanatic: The film is based on wildly successful graphic novel. Did that make you nervous at all, the expectations?

Byung-hun Lee: I just tried to focus on the script and not worry about how many people love the Red series.

Movie Fanatic: The director, Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest), is one of your first Western helmers to direct you. How was it different than those you have experienced before?

Byung-hun Lee: He likes to have a conversation with the actors, which is kind of unusual. I was really comfortable with that. I really like to share ideas with directors. We tried different versions of things.

Movie Fanatic: Your suits in the film were awesome, so sharp…

Byung-hun Lee: His world is most dangerous, and also at same time, he’s one of the richest assassins out there. So, he had to be the most fashionable and have luxury. It was cool... so cool!

Movie Fanatic: Did you get to keep any of those suits?

Byung-hun Lee: No! I wish [laughs].

The Wolverine International Trailer: Unseen Footage!

Since the first The Wolverine trailer emerged some months ago, 20th Century Fox has done a great job of slowly doling out the visuals on their next chapter for the X-Men hero and his solo journeys.

It seems hard to believe that there is anything left to tease without giving too much away, but in a new international trailer that just arrived, although it’s short at 30 seconds, there are a few images we have yet to see. And they’re… awesome.

Hugh Jackman is back as the reluctant hero, a role he originated over a decade ago and is it us, or does he just seem to get better at it with each successive movie?

The James Mangold directed The Wolverine slashes its way into theaters July 26 and Movie Fanatic was given a surprise little note just now… we were among a few press outlets invited to talk to Jackman down at Comic-Con

With the first 300: Rise of an Empire trailer garnering the buzz, look for filmmakers landing in San Diego to give fans either a new trailer or footage… or both!

The second film in the 300 series features a different director, Noam Murro, instead of Zack Snyder. But, Snyder is still all over this one, as he served as co-writer of the script and producer of the film.

At the heart of The Conjuring is a couple who make their living fighting off the supernatural. The fact that the horror story is based on a true story and it is merely just one of the dozens the Warrens have worked on... is truly frightening.

As seen in The Conjuring trailer, the Warrens (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are summoned to a home in the 1970s where a curse (or is it a demon?) has entrapped the young family in a world of sheer terror.

Turbo Review: Fast and Furious Family Fun

$

Turbo, initially, had us wondering how a story about a garden snail with dreams of racing in the Indianapolis 500 would really come together. In fact, we were surprised how much the DreamWorks Animation movie was delightful, inspiring and a wholly entertaining experience.

Turbo Cast Photo

Ryan Reynolds voices Turbo, a snail who is living life in the backyard of a Los Angeles suburban home, alongside his brother (Paul Giamatti). They wake up, go to work on the tomato plants, and go home -- every day, day in… day out. Turbo is convinced there is more to life and in fact, he spends his off time watching video tapes on an abandoned TV in the garage of his inspiration, Guy Gagne (Bill Hader), winning the Indy 500 over and over again.

After a period of time everyone in his snail group of friends, and especially his brother, keep on telling him to stop dreaming and start living the life he was destined to lead. Turbo is despondent, and as we see in the Turbo trailer, our little guy wanders away from his home and winds up getting sucked into a street racer’s car and gets amped up on Nitrous Oxide that turns him into a speed machine.

A madcap serious of events (fateful to say the least) leads Turbo and his brother to a taco stand run by Tito (Michael Pena) and his brother Angelo (Luis Guzman), where the former just happens to run a back alley snail racing racket, and guess who’s the new star?

It is also there that we are introduced to Turbo’s pals and fellow snail racing compatriots. And the vocal talents of the group are beyond stellar. Samuel L. Jackson is Whiplash, Snoop Dogg is Smoove Move, Maya Rudolph voices Burn and Ben Schwartz tackles Skidmark.

Ryan Reynolds is Turbo

Turbo is not only a priceless lesson in determination and a never giving up on one’s dreams story for kids, but it also works incredibly well as an overcoming the odds tale that will easily resonate with adults. The humor permeates across age groups, the thrills are intense -- but not too intense for small children -- and the heart pulsates with the performances of the cast and the strength of the story.

Our Turbo review believes that director David Soren achieves all those fantastic attributes and also manages to craft an animated movie that pops off the screen with a color that is as vibrant as his tale of the snail who may be small, but whose dreams are enormous.

The LEGO Movie Comic-Con Poster: Brick by Brick

One of the movies we’re surprisingly excited to cover at this year’s Comic-Con is The LEGO Movie. Hot on the heels of The LEGO Movie trailer, we’ve got the film’s poster, designed specifically for Comic-Con.

The LEGO Movie Comic-Con Poster

The movie doesn’t arrive until February 7, 2014, but the buzz is already beginning. Considering the toy company has full LEGO series for some of the biggest properties in Hollywood (The Lord of the Rings, Batman), having these icons of film in the same movie… is frankly thrilling.

The poster above still doesn’t tell us too much about the movie, but you have to admit: It’s pretty cool to see the toys we played with as kids (and perhaps some of us still do!) get the big screen treatment.

The cast is also astounding from Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Christ Pratt and Will Ferrell to Samuel Jackson and Elizabeth Banks.

Longtime LEGO fans Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) are behind the effort and like we said, it should prove for one interesting Comic-Con press conference!

Movie Fanatic Round Table: Comic-Con Preview

As Movie Fanatic heads down the highway from Los Angeles to San Diego for Comic-Con, we got the opinions of a few of our fellow journalists that are also attending the world’s biggest pop culture convention to chime in as to what their most anticipated moments of the upcoming Comic-Con are and why.

Movie Fanatic Round Table Pic

The Movie Fanatic Round Table has convened and some of the best and brightest covering film in Hollywood are giving us their two cents as to what gets us going during the convention that gets fans of all things popular arts excited just thinking about it.

Don Kaye, MSN Parallel Universe

I'm really looking forward to our first look at next year's Godzilla reboot, because I think director Gareth Edwards is the right man for the job on this. Also very interested in the Fox panel and the first looks there at Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and hopefully X-Men: Days of Future Past.

But I am most excited this year for the Marvel panel because I'm hoping we'll get some announcements on Phase 3 of their movie slate, and if so, I am looking forward to seeing the title Doctor Strange on there.

Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlend.com

Every year that I’ve gone to Comic-Con I’ve found myself surprised by some of the smaller presentations, be it because of fun panel lineups or cool footage, but it’s always Marvel Studios that puts on the biggest show and I’m most excited to see what they bring next Saturday.

Chris Evans Captain American The Winter Soldier

This year the schedule lists both Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier as being part of the show, two films that I’m highly anticipating, but what I’m most looking forward to are the special announcements.

Last year they debuted test footage from Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, revealed they were making Guardians of the Galaxy, announced titles for the aforementioned sequels. I can’t wait to see what they reveal next weekend.

Joel D. Amos, MovieFanatic.com

We recently polled our readership: What is their most anticipated Comic-Con movie and so far, it’s a pretty even split. That’s the thing about Comic-Con is it means so much to so many people because there is literally so much to talk about. But, if I had to choose one movie above all others that I’m excited to hear about… it’s the “surprise” press conference that we’ve been invited to by Fox.

James McAvoy X-Men: Days of Future Past

I noticed that The Wolverine press conference is a little shorter than normal, and right after that on the schedule is the “surprise press conference” reference. I’ve got a feeling that we might be seeing our first footage from X-Men: Days of Future Past. When I spoke to James McAvoy about X-Men: Days of Future Past the day before he was due to start shooting -- this film has come together quite nicely. On paper, it sounds like it could be the best of the bunch -- color me excited.

Silas Lesnick, ComingSoon.net

As much as I’m looking forward to the first footage from Mad Max: Fury Road and the (likely) reveal of the next films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, my favorite part of Comic-Con is always the viral marketing campaigns.

Since the whole convention is sort of a tribute to unreality, there’s nothing quite as much fun to me as seeing fans being able to exist in the fictional worlds that they love. It’s hard to say what will end up being the most memorable this year, but Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla encounter certainly has attention.

Ned Ehbar, Metro World News

Here's what I'm geeking out over the most this year at the annual pop culture smorgasbord. For film, I'm less excited to see what Marvel is trotting out -- unless there are some Guardians of the Galaxy surprises -- and more interested in Fox's big return with a "surprise" presentation, which we're all betting is Bryan Singer showing off something from X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Concept Art for Guardians of the Galaxy Image

I'll give Marvel some credit on the TV side, though, as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. certainly has my attention. And I'll be complaining about all the dust in my eyes during Matt Smith's last visit for Doctor Who. But who am I kidding? I'm mostly looking forward to taking my breaks at Wired Cafe once again. Did you know they have a Game of Thrones bar this time? I wonder if they'll serve a drink called the Red Wedding.

James Oster, JoBlo.com

Once again Comic Con is hitting us in full force as we descend upon another year of movies, comics, music and even a panel on food!?! This year one of my most anticipated films happens to be The World’s End. I love what Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have concocted in the past and from my estimation, this looks like a blast! And yes, I'm a Tom Cruise fan so I look forward to hearing more about Edge of Tomorrow and whether or not the actor will show up to represent (which would be all sorts of awesome).

All You Need is Kill Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

Of course, for the first time ever I'm thrilled to be representing Arrow in the Head (and JoBlo.com) on the Masters of the Web panel which is horror specific this year. The panel this year will be moderated by the director of the terrific looking new horror flick You’re Next, Adam Wingard, as well as the film's writer Simon Barrett. The panel will be held at 11:30 on Thursday so I've looking forward to all the horror enthusiast to check it out!
